Editors Letter Welcome to the January issue of Princes Risborough View magazine. We do hope you like our front cover this month, a beautiful, snowy picture taken on the hills overlooking Risborough. It was taken by Ian Rycroft and we would like to thank him very much. Please have a look at more of his work at www.rycroftphotography.com or www.ianrycroft.co.uk. This is the first time we have published a January issue so we do hope it will prove to be a great success. It’s often a popular time to start new plans and make decisions for the year ahead and we are no exception. We have lots of ideas for our magazines this year and it all begins in March with a brand new magazine, Thame View. We are very excited about this new adventure

and hope it will be as successful and well thought of as we are told Risborough View is. If you know anyone who would like to promote their business in the Thame area why not suggest thst they get in touch with us to discuss our fabulous introductory offers (Coralie 07500 048230). We always encourage feedback from our readers and we have taken on board your comments this year. We would like to include more local articles, so if you or someone you know is a budding writer and feel you have an idea for an interesting, regular local piece, please get in touch. It is always good to have a variety of editorial to keep people interested and we always try and change things on a regular basis. Please also let us know if you have any exciting events coming up that we could help promote either in the community pages or with some space in the magazine. We do hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are looking forward to 2013.

Recipe of the Month

Chocolate Pecan Pie Serves 8, Ready in 1½ hours (plus chilling)

If you have a bowlful of nuts left over from Christmas then why not make this classic American favourite with a British twist – simply replace half the pecan nuts with walnuts, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts. Serve with a dollop of thick Greek yoghurt or whipped cream.

8

Ingredients: For the pastry: • 225g plain flour • 100g butter, diced • 1 medium egg, beaten with 2 tbsp cold water

2.

Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 25cm round deep metal pie tin (or a loose-based fluted flan tin). Crimp the pastry edge with your fingers and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill for 30 minutes.

For the filling: • 100g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 50g butter, diced • 75g golden syrup • 4 tbsp maple syrup • 75g caster sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 175g pecan nuts (or a mixture of pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts)

3.

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6 and place a baking sheet in the oven to heat. To make the filling, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat and stir in the golden syrup, maple syrup and sugar then whisk in the beaten eggs. Chop half the nuts and stir into the mixture.

Method: 1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the egg and water and mix to a crumbly dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Wrap and chill the pastry for 20 minutes.

4.

Gently pour the mixture into the pastry case and sprinkle over the rest of the nuts (roughly chopping the hazelnuts and Brazil nuts, if using). Slide the pie tin onto the preheated baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and bake for a further 25-30 minutes until the filling has set and the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold.

Thame Dollshouse & Miniatures Fair 2013

now 1/12th, 1/24th or 1/48th scale. Metric measurements are not generally used, and even in Europe imperial measurements are used and one inch represents one foot for 1/12th.

Once the clocks go back and the days become cooler, miniaturists move indoors from their gardens to their other passion - dolls houses and everything in miniature. Many miniaturists have previously been involved in a wide range of crafts and other hobbies over the years and have brought these skills and crafts together, to make, furnish and people their dolls houses and room boxes. These come in many shapes and sizes and range from large mansions, Victorian and Edwardian houses, farmhouses with stables, to single room boxes, shops and pubs, and everything in-between. Old dolls houses were 1/16 scale, but most are 16

Locally, members of Princes Risborough Miniaturists’ Group meet at 7.30 every third Thursday in the month at the Community Centre in Princes Risborough, and welcome anyone who wants to become involved. At their monthly meetings they share their knowledge and expertise, discuss ideas through workshops and projects. The main emphasis is on enjoyment, and developing skills that can be used in the hobby. Between the members there is a wide range of expertise and all enjoy the challenge of developing a new or forgotten skill. The limits are only the skills or techniques not yet learnt and your imagination, and ever thing is possible once you put your mind to it. For details please ring 01844 344711. The Thame Dollshouse & Miniatures Fair is an annual one day fair. This year it is on Saturday 23rd February 2013 10.00am – 4.00pm at the Thame Leisure Centre. The fair supports Breast Cancer Campaign and last year raised

over £3,200 for the charity. This event is recognised amongst miniaturists to be one of the ‘must visit’ events of the year. It showcases some of the finest miniatures artisans in the UK, and people come from all around the country to look and buy their miniatures here. The fair also features a raffle of miniatures made and donated by stand holders and other professional miniaturists, a miniatures tombola, a second hand miniatures stall, that adults and children love, and other related events. All money raised from these tables goes to Breast Cancer Campaign. More details about the fair, the Artisans who are attending and much more, is on the website www.thamedollshousefair.co.uk or phone 07738 009795. We look forward to seeing you at the fair. Remember a dolls house is for life not just for childhood.

Your Seed Potatoes

thicker skins. These are the ones to grow for baking. Desiree is a delicious red potato, King Edward is an old favourite with a superb flavour, Majestic is a reliable variety from Lincolnshire, they will give you large tubers that are just right for baking. For salads, go for Charlotte, International Kidney or the very popular Pink Fir Apple.

Now Christmas and the New Year celebrations are over, the new gardening season begins. Gardeners are naturally optimistic, and like me you’re probably noticing how the days are getting a little bit longer and Spring is getting nearer. In reality, there is still a way to go before the real gardening can begin. One of the first tasks of the new season is the selection and preparation of your seed potatoes. Seed Potatoes are available in four main categories, First Earlies, Second Earlies, Maincrop and Salad. Firsts are what most people think of as a traditional new potato with thin skins and are best eaten immediately after harvesting. They mature quickly and 20

are ready around ten weeks after planting. Recommended varieties are Pentland Javelin, Arran Pilot and Swift. These three examples are tried and trusted, will thrive in any soil and are ideal for the first time grower. Second Earlies stay in the ground a tad longer, and are therefore a bigger potato. They will be ready to harvest from the middle of July, and as opposed to the Firsts, they generally store well. Maris Peer is an excellent boiler, Estima is highly versatile, equally good to boil, make chips or roasting, Saxon is a lovely creamy variety that makes superb mash. The maincroppers are grown to store and use throughout the winter months. They produce big yields, large potatoes and have much

Seed Potatoes should be planted once the threat of hard frosts has passed - ideally early May. Before you plant them out, try ‘Chitting’ them. This is the traditional practice of placing the seed potatoes in something like an egg box, and leave them in a cool, bright room for a couple of weeks. After a fortnight you will see your seed potatoes have produced dark green sprouts around 2cm long. They are now ready to be planted. We will have our Seed Potatoes in stock from the middle of January, so if you need any more advice do pop in and have a chat with one of us. Happy New Year and Happy Gardening. See you soon,

Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Your Health Joint Hypermobility Some of the greatest sports men and women in the world are Hypermobile… How did he bend that ball? How did she reach that shot? What is joint Hypermobility? Being hypermobile means that you can move your joints more than most people can. It’s often referred to as being double jointed or as hyperlaxity. There are some advantages to having hypermobile joints. For example, they can help in certain sports such as gymnastics or swimming, and athletic coaches will often aim to increase flexibility, as well as strength and endurance. Dancers also need a wide range of movement in their joints and hypermobile fingers can help musicians, particularly keyboard and string players. There are several causes for hypermobility, the shape of the bones, for example shallow shoulder or hip sockets; weak or stretched ligaments; muscle tone. About 75% of people inherit hypermobility from a parent and there is often a family history of it. Joint hypermobility is not uncommon and in most cases, people won’t have any symptoms. However, for those who do, symptoms may include: • Muscle strain or pain. This is the most common problem with having hypermobile joints. The muscles have to work harder if the joint is very supple and this can lead to muscle strain. 24

• Joint stiffness. Sometimes the joint feels tense or stiff which may be caused by fluid collecting inside the joint. This happens as the body tries to repair the damage caused if a muscle is over stretched. • Foot pain. You may have a flat arch to your foot which can lead to foot pain and you may have an overall unstable foot which may cause ligament strains. • Backache. This can be due to the vertebra in your spine being too supple and can lead to one of the bones slipping on another. This is known as spondylolisthesis. • Injured joints. Hypermobile joints are more likely to become injured if they are overstretched. How is hypermobility diagnosed? Diagnosis is based on an examination and a scoring system known as the Beighton score which measures flexibility using a standard set of movements. At The Luxton Clinic, our Osteopaths and our Podiatrist are trained to use this system. Exercise and fitness. Regular exercise is important as part of a healthy lifestyle and if you are hypermobile strong muscles will help to protect the joints they surround. This will provide more stability and reduce joint wear and tear. It is important not to over-stretch

but rather to strengthen. Prioritize strengthening the muscles surrounding the most susceptible joints: your shoulders, elbows, knees and ankles. Also focus on strengthening your core muscles in your lower back, abdomen, pelvis and hips, because they protect your spine. By stabilizing your entire body, a strong core also lessens the load on the most susceptible joints, reducing the chance for injury there as well. At The Luxton Clinic we frequently treat the consequences of hypermobility whether it is correcting foot function or realigning the spine and balancing the pelvis. Correct footwear and appropriate exercise is very important for the hypermobile person and it is important that you receive good advice and treatment if required. Editorial written by The Luxton Clinic

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi there, my name is Swift and I’m a 2 year old Collie Cross. I am an intelligent dog and once I know you I am very loving and loyal. I will need lots of exercise and mental stimulation so that I don’t get bored. I would like to live with experienced owners who know about my breed and can bring out the best in me. I may be able to live with other

26

dogs depending on how we get along and I can live with cats. I would like a home where any children are aged 16 and over. If you are interested in offering me, or any other dog, a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695. It would be great to see you!

Book Review - Dear Diary

Imagine 365 blank pages: a brand new year of opportunity stretching before you. 2013 will be full of ‘dear diary’ moments and to kick-start your new year’s resolutions of self-improvement and examination (until February at least) here are some of the best, and most amusing slants on, and windows into other characters’ lives. Secret Diary of a Call Girl by Belle De Jour Publisher: Grand Central Publishing

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith Publisher: Vintage Classics.

It’s a growing problem: graduate unemployment. What do you do when university loans and soaring rent become too much and you need to find a way to make ends meet? Belle hits on a new and rather unorthodox get-rich-quick-scheme that fits perfectly in with her London lifestyle. It’s not for the fainthearted but if it’s titillation you’re after then there are observations and shock events that will have you laughing your fishnets off. The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 and by Sue Townsend The teenage Adrian Mole is unfailingly satirical, tremendously funny and completely loveable. This is one of the most memorable diaries ever and it’s oozing, like a giant zit, with teenage angst. Will he ever discover the delights that lie hidden under Pandora’s Janet Reager slip? Children will read this and both look forward to and dread adolescence in equal measures, whilst adults will be able to reminisce over first having a 46

girl in their bedroom. I’d insist the door’s propped open if I were you.

Cassandra Mortmain’s family is poor. They live in a castle that’s crumbling around them and this is her story, written while she’s sat ‘at the kitchen sink’. So begins the endearing and warming tale of the children, living under the burden of their novelist father’s writer’s block. Cassandra’s journal charts the change and disruption that breaks out when heirs to the family home come to claim it. Dream-like and highly memorable, it’s a diary to be treasured. Diary of a Nobody by George Grossmith, Weedon Grossmith. Publisher: Wordsworth Editions Limited Don’t let the fact that this book was first published in 1892 put you off. It may be a year and a half in the life of a lower-middle class Victorian clerk but there are so many parallels with modern life that you can’t fail to be touched by its humour. Fundamentally flawed by his own over-inflated sense of worth and his desire to climb the social ladder, Charles Pooter’s observations, wit and snobbery

will have you laughing out loud. Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding Publisher: Picador. With her constant calorie-counting, lusting after her bounder of a boss and remorse over bingedrinking sessions and social faux pas, how can we not love Bridget Jones? She’s become cemented as one of the great literary (or at least chick-literary) anti-heroes. Enjoyed by singletons and ‘Smug Marrieds’ alike, we love Bridget Jones…just as she is. Diary by Chuck Palahniuk Publisher: Vintage Told in diary form and mainly through the eyes of hotel maid and self-confessed ‘white trash’ woman, Misty Mary Wilmot, this is a thought-provoking novel from the author of Fight Club. Misty was once a bohemian art student who met the wealthy and enigmatic Peter, so unlike the other students that she thought all her prayers had been answered. Now she lives in a world she doesn’t recognise and her husband lies comatose after a suicide attempt. This is for those of us in a period of self-reflection and examination. If it tells us anything it’s to be true to ourselves.

Risborough Countryside Group News January 2013 Brush Hill & Winsdor Hill NR work parties

on Saturday January 19th 2013, starting at 7.30pm and including a ploughman’s supper. For details contact Anne Maltby on 01844344318

Want to get involved in local wildlife projects? For details of conservation work parties at our local nature reserves contact Roger Newman from the Risborough Countryside Group on 01844 274101. Thanks to some very productive work parties (and some very hungry sheep), Windsor Hill Nature Reserve is looking like an excellent stretch of chalk downland now. In the coming weeks we will be mapping out the areas of scrub with some high tech thingy, and planning for long term rotational scrub clearance to get a diversity of age/structure in the scrub across the grassland. There was no work party in December but, weather permitting, we will coppice an initial scrub plot and brushcut any un-nibbled areas of emerging dogwood on Monday 21st January.

We are under the Market House, Market Square every Thursday morning 9.00-12.30p.m. We can supply all your freshly baked goods for Christmas, together with preserves, fresh flower baskets, and local crafts. We wish all our customers a very happy Christmas and New Year. Please note we are closed in January re-open on 7th February 2013. However, if you buy in December you can freeze our cakes, quiches, etc. as they are freshly baked. For further information please look at our website at www.buckscountrymarkets.co.uk or ring Lorraine on 01844 347230 who will be pleased to hear from you.

1st Princes Risborough Scout Group We are seeking a new leader for our Cub group which meets weekly from 6.30 - 8pm on Monday evenings during term-time and caters for boys and girls from 8 to 10½ years. We are also seeking to fill the role of Group Scout Leader (GSL). The Group Scout Leader is the volunteer manager of the Group, providing leadership and support to the other adult volunteers. They ensure that the adults are well managed and have the resources needed to run their sections. The time commitment for the GSL position is flexible. Whilst some knowledge or experience of Scouting would be advantageous for both roles, just having a keen interest and a ‘can-do’ attitude is much more important! Either way, we’ll make sure you’re properly trained and supported. Both roles require a CRB check, which is provided free by the Scout Association. If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please call our Chairman, Dave Walker on 01844 274718 or email prscouts@hotmail.co.uk for further details. Contacts: Beavers (6-8 years) - Tina Brown (01844) 345393, Cubs (8-10½ years) - Mick Beckingham (01844) 343710, Scouts (10½ 14½ years) - Alan Burniston 07711 606947, Explorer Scouts (14½-18 years) - Graham Heald 07545 784816, prscouts@hotmail.co.uk

Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway January, although the railway is closed to the public, is a very busy time for our volunteers, for there is a lot of maintenance work to be done to bring the track up to scratch for another season in 2013. While trains are not running regularly, this is the time to take up track, sort out drainage and other problems, relay any bits that have needed attention or levelling, not to mention trimming hedgerows, and the like. The locomotives and carriages, too, need attention after a season’s use, meaning not all work is outside !! If you are at a loss for what to do after Christmas, we are always on the look out for volunteers, so please call Dave Maxey on 07718 003132, if you would like to know how we could use your expertise without our volunteers (and we are all volunteers) there would be no railway for the public to enjoy.

Princes Risborough Afternoon W.I. The meeting is at St Mary’s Parish Hall at 2pm on the first Wednesday of the 52

month. Visitors are always welcome & true to tradition a good cup of tea is provided.

Princes Risborough Morning W.I. 9th Jan - Tales of the T.V. Centre - a talk by Gerard Melling.

Reactivate Bucks Find yourself juggling 101 things at the same time? With family, work and other commitments all competing for time, being a Mum often means that ‘Me Time’ doesn’t get a look in. It’s so easy to forget to set aside a little time just for you, but this January there’s a way for you to get a bit of time to yourself, and keep that New Year’s Resolution at the same time. Back to Netball sessions and Beginners Running courses are taking place across Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes at times and venues to suit you; like straight after the school run, so it’s easy to fit into your routine. With a weekly session to attend where you know you’ll see friendly faces and have lots of fun, there’s no reason not to dedicate an hour a week to yourself. Hundreds of women have already joined their local session and love the way it makes them feel, Alison, 32 who lives locally says, “Last New Year I swapped my fad diet and found my way Back to Netball instead. It’s me time and it’s far more fun than when we were at school!” And for anyone who would like to do a charity race but thinks that they can’t run, there are lots of women who can prove you wrong. Beginners Running courses will ease you in gradually, starting at walking pace, so you’ll soon be hooked and feeling energised, just like Karen, 41, “Completing the 10 week beginners running course has shown me that running can be safe and fun. The group keep me motivated to come back each week and that means my occasional slice of cake is guilt free!” So whether you go on your own, or drag along some friends, attend one of these beginners sessions this New Year, and make this resolution one you’ll keep.
