Editors’ Letter Welcome to Princes Risborough View magazine. We had a small taster of summer and then it disappeared again for a bit but perhaps it’s waiting for all the fetes and community events that are coming up? Certainly, people have started to get out in their gardens more now and Askett Nurseries have been busy. They have some great advice (page 46/47) about what to plant in any free space you may have left. There are some excellent shows in the next month or so, at Waterside Theatre (p42) in Aylesbury. We will be emailing the next lucky winner of

the competition any minute and we really hope that last month’s winner enjoys their 4 free tickets to Birds of a Feather. The St. Dunstan’s Church Flower Festival is definitely an event not to miss on June 29th (details page 40) and Bucks Open Studios are holding another Art Show on June 8th – 23rd at Tiggywinkles (page 29). Our ‘Great Local Days Out’ page this month is West Wycombe Park (p30) and although so close, we bet a lot of you have not been and explored all that they have to offer there, plus the West Wycombe shops to wander along to. Go and explore for a fun day out.

Recipe of the Month

Guacamole

Allow 1/2 an avocado per person and adjust the other ingredients accordingly. The simple avocado is receiving lots of attention from researchers examining inflammatory health problems such as arthritis. Packed full of anti-inflammatories, anti-oxidants and monounsaturated fats, Omega 3, carotenoids and an array of other nutrients, it also ticks the box for promoting a healthy cardiovascular system. Healthy, quick, simple to prepare and delicious! Try this recipe of Mexican origin - guacamole. Making your own gives this dish a new dimension much superior to the supermarket’s version. INGREDIENTS:

EQUIPMENT:

• 2 avocados

Pestle and mortar or wand blender.

• 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh tomatoes (2 golf ball sized)

Method:

• 2 mild chillies chopped (sweet bell or cherry peppers are mild) • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander • 1 onion finely chopped

2. Mash in the avocados. Choose how smooth or chunky you prefer the consistency to be.

• 1 tablespoon lime juice

3. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

• 10 ml (2 teaspoons) water • Salt and pepper to season to taste 8

1. Use a pestle and mortar if you have one and make a paste from the tomatoes, chillies, coriander, onion and lime juice. Add a little salt and the water.

4. Serve with tacos, savoury biscuits, bread sticks and/or a selection of prepared raw vegetables such as carrots, cucumber and celery.

Risborough Annual Town Festival and RizFesT Final Details Announced

If your musical tastes include The Rolling Stones, The Police, Oasis and the Beatles then Rizfest 2013 is just the place to be over the weekend 12/13/14th July 2013. RizFesT 2013 is the climax to this year’s Annual Town Festival which commences on Saturday 6th July with the Street Fair, followed by a week packed with concerts, exhibitions and displays. The increasingly popular children’s parade and street fair will be held in the High St on Saturday 6th July from 1pm with an array of local stallholders supported by musical performances from local schools in the Market Square. The 10K run and Children’s Chocolate Hunt on the 7th will be followed by a week long programme of events organised by local businesses, clubs and societies ranging from tours, talks, and walks to concerts by local schools. Risborough’s own Skasouls UK kick starts RizFesT on the evening of Friday 12th in the Community Centre from 7pm. Skasouls will be supported by the fabulous Dung Beatles, the premier Beatles tribute act in the South East. Saturday 13th sees RizfesT move to the Princes Risborough School playing field where a day of music culminates with the Rollin Stoned providing a show that is an affectionate and skilfully observed homage to their idols, albeit with an undercurrent of gentle parody never too far from the surface. The line-up also includes The Mighty Redox half punk/half hippy staples of

Oxford music; playing upbeat psychedelic blues workouts of pure energy. Annirythmics will transport you back to the heady days of the Eighties, when Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were the king and queen of the British music industry. Local “not just another Rock Band” Black Rose, Splash the Cash playing a collection of Johnny Cash songs and local girls 2 Non Blondes and Popular Jake complete the days line up. The music continues on Sunday 14th with The Secret Police performing some of the greatest Police songs with an uncanny accuracy. Supported by Noasis the definitive tribute to Manchester’s supergroup Oasis, plus Icecoldplay the Sunblaze Steel Band and local singer songwriter Ross Stevenson complete the line-up.

Tickets for Rizfest are now on sale for full details visit www.rizfest.com The Information Centre Princes Risborough. 10

Your Health Degenerative Disc Disease Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a condition with a misleading name in that it is not actually a disease but part of the natural aging process of the spine. When the discs in the spine (the pillow-like pads between the bones) lose their cushioning it can cause pain in the lower back, legs, neck or arms. DDD is one of the leading sources of back and neck pain. The discs are made up of a fibrous capsule which contains a jelly-like centre. This makes for a very strong structure able to bear weight and absorb shock. As we age the centre loses fluid and becomes more fibrous, and the disc reduces in height as a result. This means that the disc is less able to bear weight and absorb shock and more strain is put onto the joints of our spine. Other consequences include a narrowing of the spaces through which the spinal nerves travel, and an increased curve in the thoracic spine (upper back) causing a stooped posture. Symptoms Often described as ‘wear and tear’ and a condition that ‘you will have to live with’ most patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease will experience only low-grade continuous but tolerable pain that will occasionally intensify. 12

For others, however, lumbar degenerative disc disease can cause severe pain. Treatment for pain caused by degenerative disc disease can include medication, spinal injections and physical therapy such as osteopathy. In a very small percentage of patients back surgery may be required if the pain is severe and causes an inability to participate in everyday activities. Most of the symptoms experienced in DDD are from the structures surrounding the disc rather than the disc itself. The increased pressure on the spinal joints may be felt as anything from a mild nagging ache to sharp severe pains. It is common to feel stiffness in the back as the altered mechanics impede the vertebra’s ability to move freely. The decreased space for the spinal nerve may lead to pain or pins & needles or numbness in the arms or legs. One common condition associated with this decreased space is Stenosis. The symptoms of stenosis are characterised by pains in the legs when walking which relieve when the patient sits down and leans forward. Muscles will also be tight as they pull on the spine like guy ropes on a tent pole to try and stabilise the upright posture as the discs become less efficient at bearing load.

Treatment Stay active to slow the disc degeneration. Exercise not only preserves what functionality exists, it is one of the best ways of healing the back. Exercise increases the flow of blood and oxygen and other nutrients to the back and discs, thereby keeping them hydrated and as pliable as possible. Exercise can also improve one’s sense of well-being by promoting the release of endorphins, a natural pain-reliever and stress reducer. Osteopathy at The Luxton Clinic with Ian and Victoria is beneficial in helping to improve and maintain mobility by improving the range of motion in joints and relaxing tight muscles which will in turn help to reduce pain. Keeping the joints mobile will help to take pressure off sensitive nerves and tissues, maintain a healthy blood flow and reduce muscle tension.

International Picnic Day There seems to be a special day for everything nowadays and whilst this is no exception it was one that seemed a shame to ignore. Whilst there’s little information that points to a definitive origin for this special day what could be better than spending time outdoors with friends and family? It falls on 18th June this year so why not find a local park or field, kick off your shoes and enjoy an al fresco meal together? Make sure you go somewhere that isn’t restricted for what you want to take (pets / alcohol etc.) and ensure that there’s sufficient shade for those of your party who need it. Bring cups and plates that will withstand a grassy field/ slopes or sand and always, always remember a bag for the rubbish. There’s nothing worse than people who leave their mess behind for others. 14

Games are fab too and they don’t have to be athletic. A peaceful game of Scrabble in the sun is just as fun as leaping around with a Frisbee (and less disruptive on people around you). And finally don’t forget your blanket. Make sure you can wash it or wipe it clean and ensure it’s big enough for everyone and the food!

Great Local Days Out, West Wycombe Park

Elegant and quirky, this is a place to make you smile If awards were given for Best Location, West Wycombe Park would be a frequent winner. Its glorious grounds and spectacular interiors have featured in many period films and TV costume dramas such as the Importance of Being Earnest, Cranford, Little Dorrit and Downton Abbey. First recorded in the Domesday Book, the manor of West Wycombe belonged to the Bishops of Winchester. The estate came into the Dashwood family in 1698 as part of a family settlement, and was transferred to the two brothers, Samuel and Francis Dashwood. In 1706 Francis bought his brother’s share of the estate for £15,000. He became Sir Francis Dashwood in 1707. The original mansion was sited lower down on the estate and was demolished by Sir Francis the 1st Baronet around 1710. A new one was built on higher ground where the house is today. The 2nd Baronet, Sir Francis, inspired by his travels to Italy on the Grand Tour, spent his life converting his modest Queen Anne home into a Palladian style villa. He also redesigned the formal garden moving to a more naturalistic landscape much favoured in this period; and throughout the park he built a number of follies in the form of classical temples creating a serene and graceful garden. 30

In 1943 Sir John Dashwood gifted the property to the nation and the National Trust in partnership with his son, the late Sir Francis, embarked on a programme of restoration to reveal much glorious original decorative detail. West Wycombe Park is still home to the Dashwood family. Sir Edward, the 12th Baronet, his wife Lucinda and their three children are in residence.

There is plenty more in the surrounding historic landscape to entertain you for the day – a wander through the centuries old village of West Wycombe with its shops and inns. You can’t miss the Hill with its strange mausoleum and iconic golden ball above the Church of St. Lawrence. A walk through the wild flower meadows will take you to the top and far ranging views.

Entry to the property is on the unique and beautiful South Colonnade. Eight ground floor State Rooms are open to the public and are an explosion of excess and extravagance with lavishly painted ceilings and classical frescoes reflecting the 2nd Baronet’s love of Italy, antiquity and the erotic. Overlooking a glistening lake, streams and leafy walks, West Wycombe Park continues to fascinate with its irresistible italianate charm.

West Wycombe Park’s Grounds opened in April and the House will open on Sunday June 2nd. Entry is by Guided Tour, Monday to Thursday with a free flow system in place on Sunday. Gates open at 2.00pm with last entries at 5.15pm. We will be hosting a Vintage, Veteran and Classic Car day on Father’s Day June 16th and a wonderful Outdoor Theatre “Alice – an extraordinary adventure” on Saturday August 24th.

Book Review Making a Song and Dance of It The West End will soon be heaving again as tourists flock to see the hottest musicals. Many of them started life as novels, plays and poetry, and the authors’ words were adapted into catchy show-tunes and moving ballads. Here’s our pick of the best-loved tales to get the toe-tapping treatment. Pygmalion George Bernard Shaw Long before Julie Andrews was beaten to the film role by Audrey Hepburn, My Fair Lady began life as Bernard Shaw’s triumphant comic play Pygmalion. The deliciously arrogant Professor Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can turn ‘guttersnipe’ Eliza Doolittle into a lady but she is far from being the downtrodden flower girl he believes her to be. It’s one of Shaw’s greatest critiques of the English class system and it’s abso-bloomin’-lutely hilarious to boot. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats T.S. Eliot When Cats were merely kittens in Lloyd Webber’s eyes, readers were curling up in a sunny corner with T.S. Eliot’s Practical Cats. Writing under the name ‘Old Possum’ in letters to his godchildren, Eliot’s poems included tales of Macavity, Mr. Mistoffelees and Bustopher Jones. The charming collection is much-loved the world over for its unique take on cat psychology. Les Miserables Victor Hugo Jean Valjean is a man who’s desperate to escape his past, but with a policeman like Javert on his tail, this escaped convict is going to have a battle on his hands. Les Mis has everything: mistaken identity, injustice and love, all set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. It’s the world’s longest running musical, and most recently gave us the cinematic opportunity to see Hugh Jackman without a shirt on. 34

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Ian Fleming Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Musical Car was written by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame, who penned the original three-part series for his son. The idea has to be every child’s dream: a flying car. Inventor Caratacus Potts restores a second-hand vehicle and he and his children name it after the sound of a backfiring engine. It soon becomes clear that Chitty isn’t your average automobile and the family embarks on an adventure that involves kidnap and gangsters, cross-channel flying and some bizarre characters. When Chitty made it to the West End, audiences poured in to see the flying car in all its glory. Oliver Twist Charles Dickens Fagin told his boys they ‘gotta pick a pocket or two’ and composer Lionel Bart picked more than an idea or two from Dickens, transposing the Victorian London of Oliver Twist to the stage, along with the wonderful characters of Twist himself, lovable rogue The Artful Dodger and simply terrifying thug, Bill Sykes. Dickens’ novel opens with Twist enduring life in the workhouse before being taken on by an undertaker. He escapes, only to fall in with Fagin’s gang of pickpockets. The book’s a lot darker than the musical with the brutality of the streets along with the poverty and drudgery of many of London’s lower classes portrayed vividly. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Gregory Maguire Written in 1995, Maguire’s novel is set in the land of Oz, way before Dorothy and Toto follow the yellow brick road. Elphaba is a girl who was born green, with sharp teeth and a disagreeable temperament. In Maguire’s vision, Oz is imaginatively recreated, with all its Technicolor splendour practically seeping from the page. But there are sinister goings on, adult themes and a not-so-happy-ending .The young Elphaba soon learns that it’s really not easy being green.

Garden Herbs

With the gardening season now in full swing, by now most of us will have filled every bed, basket and pot available with either bedding or container plants, and hopefully they’re all doing well. But if you still find you have an area still waiting to be planted up, why not think about herbs? These aromatic plants are an ideal choice for a sunny, well drained patch. The great thing about herbs is that in most cases, they will fend for themselves, only requiring the minimum of maintenance, whilst rewarding you with great colour, fragrance and culinary delights. There really are herbs for all occasions and situations, from the huge majestic arching Angelica to the tight, ground hugging Thymes. But before you do go ahead with a herb bed, do spend a bit of time checking out the dimensions an growth patterns of the plants. It makes sense to plant the big, tall varieties at the rear of the bed, so go for the aforementioned Angelica, which can shoot up to 5 ft and more, or the graceful Lovage, again this plants will tower up to the 6 ft mark by the end of the Summer. The Fennels are another big, chunky plant, the bronze variety is the one I grow - but the green is equally spectacular. Horseradish, with its big leathery leaves is another whopper. This plant forms clumps and if not kept under close supervision can in time begin to dominate your bed. No herb bed is complete without Rosemary and Sage. These two are in fact sub-shrubs, and are a good bet for the middle area of the bed. The Miss Jessops variety of Rosemary is a reliable choice, providing superb bright blue flowers that encourage butterflies and bees into your garden, whilst the Sage family offer you purple, tricolour, golden or plain green specimens, all of which will flourish and provide you with striking colour and form. For the front of 46

the bed, go for plants such as Oregano, Thyme and Marjoram. These smaller varieties will bush out and give you a neat, aromatic border. You will have noticed I have missed out a few must-have herbs. Mint and Parsley, for instance. Parsley prefers a bit of shade, so I always grow it in a bed on its own. The direct sun causes Parsley to go yellow and fade away, growing it in dappled shade with plenty of water under a tree with plenty of water keeps it green, lush and tasty. As for the mints, they are a very invasive family, and within a couple of seasons they can completely take over a herb bed. With that in mind I grow our mints in big terracotta pots. Applemint is the one to grow for the perfect apple sauce. All the above herbs are perennial or biannual - meaning they come back every year, but there are a number of annual varieties that any self-respecting herb grower must have in their collection. The tall spindly Dill is a delight to grow in a sunny spot, Coriander is another excellent choice, but perhaps the favourite is Basil. Happy gardening, see you soon,

Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.
