Editors Letter Welcome to the November Issue of Princes Risborough View.
who would like the space get the chance. We have made sure though that the layout is similar and that the cover pictures that we take pride in, will remain the focal point.
We do hope you all get that nice warm and cosy feeling from our front cover picture this month. The clocks will have changed and the winter will be settling in but lots of us do enjoy those evenings by the fire, all warm and snugly. Lots of people will also be gathering round a bonfire at a fireworks event in the next week or so and we do hope you have a great time but please take care and do remember to check those fires for hedgehogs.
We are delighted to say that our request for deliverers was answered and we are happy to welcome a couple of new members to the team, on board. We are looking into the possibility of increasing our delivery area in the next couple of months, so if there is anyone who lives in the surrounding villages such as Speen, Lacey Green, The Kimbles, Horsenden or Saunderton for example, and would like to deliver some magazines for us, we would love to hear from you. We have had a lot of interest from areas where they don’t currently get a monthly magazine delivered and we would be delighted to share Princes Risborough View with many more people.
We have had a slight re-design to our cover so that we can include some space for advertisers. There has been much demand for this and we will be alternating the adverts so that those

Recipe of the Month
Venison Casserole Serves 6, Ready in 2.5 hours (plus marinating)
Venison is a lean and flavoursome red meat which is in season from October through to February. For the best quality, buy from a trusted butcher or farmers’ market. This warming casserole is perfect for a weekend supper served with creamy mashed potato and a glass of full-bodied red wine. Ingredients: • 1.3 kg diced venison • 425ml red wine • 1 tsp juniper berries • 2 fresh bay leaves • 2 tbsp olive oil • 25g butter • 350g shallots or button onions, peeled • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 2 tbsp seasoned flour • 300ml hot beef or vegetable stock • 2 large parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks • 4 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks • few sprigs fresh thyme • salt and freshly ground black pepper • creamy mashed potato, to serve Method: 1. Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole. 2.
8
Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/ Gas Mark 2. Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine).
Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside. 3.
Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7 minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole.
4.
Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender.
5.
Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.

cathycavenderswimming@hotmail.com www.cathycavenderswimming.co.uk
Being at one with water By Cathy Cavender Swimming Tuition Swimming can be excellent for your health. It exercises the full body with no impact and is non-weight bearing. It can be used as a rehabilitative exercise, as part of a fitness program or simply for recreation. However, many people struggle to access the benefits and pleasures of swimming due to a lack of confidence in the water or a poor stroke technique. It’s wonderful to watch swimmers glide through the water with effortless grace. But why do many fit and healthy people struggle to swim a length without gasping for breath or experiencing neck / back pain? Why do some people battle with experiencing buoyancy? Swimming efficiently is about working with water and not against it. Less is more. The less you fight the water, the more it helps you. The more you learn to ‘let go’ and release tension 22
in your body, the easier and more natural swimming becomes. So it’s that easy?… There are core principles that enable movement through water with ease. These include head position, breathing and body orientation. These are fundamental to confident engagement with the water and to swimming efficiently. The mechanics of arm and leg movement can then be fine-tuned to achieve streamlined and progressive stroke techniques. So, if you would like to partake in swimming as regular exercise or recreation then why not invest some time improving your water confidence or stroke technique? By learning to be at one with water you can unlock the health benefits that water has to offer.

Tiptoe Through The Tulips
Now is the time to plant your Tulip bulbs. As they are susceptible to disease, Tulips like to be planted a little later than the other Spring flowering bulbs, so as long as we’re not hit by some very heavy frosts, you have right up until Christmas to plant them. Tulips flower a little later than Daffodils etc, not appearing until April or May, and they can carry on until June, so this is something to bear in mind when you plant them. There really is a huge range of Tulips to choose from. Size ways you can go from the short stemmed dwarf varieties such as ‘Buddy’ red and white , and ‘Calgary’ in ivory cream - these smaller choices only grow to 6-8”, so they are ideal for hanging
baskets and containers, or the front of beds. At the other end of the scale are the tall, majestic varieties like ‘Barbados’, red and ‘Carnival de Rio’, peach bicolour. To get the best from your Tulips, give the bulbs some extra protection against rotting by planting them on a layer of coarse horticultural grit. This helps with drainage and prevents the bulbs from rotting away. To plant the bulbs out, dig a hole in the soil about 20cm deep, then add around 2cm of the grit. You want the Tulips to look natural, so don’t line them up and plant individually. Plant them in groups of odd numbers (5/7/9 etc) in a circle, around 5cm apart. You may want to add a handful of fertiliser, then backfill the hole with the soil, and gently firm down.
The shorter varieties are excellent for containers, tubs and even hanging baskets. They really look great popping up through pansies and violas in the Spring. In your borders, plant them in between shrubs or clumps of perennial plants, maybe adding some young forgetme-not plants or wallflowers which will always complement the majestic taller blooms. When you’ve done your planting this is a really good time to add some mulch. Mulching plants in your borders will protect slightly tender plants from the worst of the winter weather, it also will prevent weeds coming through in the spring and retains any moisture in the soil. Mulching with bark, small chips, or chunkier grade on larger shrub borders makes the garden look neat and sets off plants a treat. As you are doing this also check your larger evergreen shrubs and small trees. Stake them to prevent wind rock, thus dislodging and damaging the roots, make sure that any tree ties are secure and not likely to cause rubbing on the bark. Happy Gardening. See you soon,

Your Health Headaches This is the first of two articles where we will be looking at headaches and neck pain. In this first article we talk about headaches which, according to statistics, affect more than 10 million people in the UK. Fortunately for the sufferers, most are easily treated. Most headaches aren’t serious and can be treated with simple lifestyle changes such as rest, reducing stress, keeping hydrated and eating correctly. Osteopathic treatment can also be very beneficial for some types of headache.
What are headaches? There are two classifications of headaches, primary, as in a tension headache, and secondary, which can be due to another underlying health problem. When patients attend The Luxton Clinic with a headache they are thoroughly screened to ensure their suitability for treatment by taking a detailed medical history and conducting a few simple tests. Tension headaches Tension headaches are probably the most common form of headache and are caused by muscular tension over the scalp and around the eyes. Common sites include the back of the skull where the muscles of the neck attach, the temple where muscles that move the jaw are located,
and the forehead. It is thought that pain is caused when chronic tightness in these muscles causes them to tire, obscure blood flow, or irritate nerves. These headaches can be linked to poor vision or incorrect prescription glasses, dehydration, stress and fatigue. Tension headaches may last anywhere from 15 minutes to a period of weeks or months. The pain is often described as a band-like tightness or pressure. It may be felt at the back of the head, upper neck, temples and around the eyes. Gentle stretching of the muscles, traction and articulation of the neck during osteopathic treatment often helps to calm the symptoms. Migraines People describe migraines as an intense pounding or throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. They often occur with visual disturbances such as blurring, floaters and double or tunnel vision. In some cases they even cause temporary blindness. Tinnitus, facial pins and needles and muscular weakness can also be experienced. Figures suggest that around 15% women and 6 % men are affected. Migraines are categorised as vascular headaches, which means that they are caused by disturbances in blood flow. Many patients notice strong smells and sounds trigger their migraines as well as certain foods and drinks,
commonly red wine, coffee, chocolate and cheese. Most people treat their migraines successfully with over-the-counter medication and avoiding sounds, smells and foods that aggravate them. If they are severe, however, you may need stronger migrainespecific medication that is only available on prescription from your GP. Many patients find that migraine headaches are relieved by Osteopathic treatment directed at the upper back and neck. Cluster headaches Cluster headaches are less common than migraines and the exact cause is unknown. It is suspected to be of similar origin to migraine in that a dysfunction in the regulation of blood flow leads to symptoms. Pain is located around the eyes and temples and is usually one sided. In the next issue of PR View we look at Cerviogenic headaches and neck pain.

called Robert Catesby, a plot was hatched to blow up the Houses of Parliament, to kill the King and many Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics. 36 barrels of gunpowder were stored in a cellar, just under the House of Lords. A man known as Guy Fawkes, who has since become synonymous with November 5th, waited in the cellar ready to light the barrels but was foiled when authorities stormed in and caught him. He was later tortured and executed.
Guy Fawkes Following the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, English Catholics turned to the reign of James I hopeful for a greater tolerance of their religion. It seemed that their hope was in vain and 13 young men decided that violent action was the answer. Under the leadership of a man 38
It appears the conspirators had been betrayed, possibly by one of their own over concerns that innocent people would be killed. Indeed, even if the plan had not been intercepted some have suggested that the explosion may never have happened since the gunpowder was so old it was likely to be useless. That night a bonfire was lit to celebrate the safety of the King and this tradition continues now every year on the 5th November complete with fireworks and Guy Fawkes effigies.

First Day Nerves By Mike Payne
Do you remember your first day at work? I certainly do, at the Corner Shop in the Market Square, working as a trainee under Martin Brunet, a Canadian who owned the shop at the time. It was quite daunting and there was so much to learn, although by the end of the first week I had pretty much ‘sorted’ everything that I had to do. Oh, and by the way, there was no gap year for me, I left school on the Friday and started work on the Monday! Like many of you I’m sure, and also like a young lady named Susan, whose memoirs of her first 12 weeks in a job was given to me recently.
High Street. I would like to show you a few extracts of this wonderful descriptive piece. It starts like this:
that shot out, to show the riches of Granny’s.” (Sounds a bit like Arkwright’s till in Open All Hours!).
“9.30 on the first Monday morning, was perhaps the most terrifying moment, and day of my life, and if it had not been for patient Jay, I would certainly have been off down the High Street full pelt! But she assured me that I would soon get used to it.”
Susan had several horrible jobs to do and she felt the full ‘wrath’ of Peg and Ivy as she remembers, “Several times I nearly got the sack when I had one too many chats with one too many friends who popped in wanting to know how I was getting on. Perhaps that spoke for itself, by the fact that several cups, saucers, jugs and other things met their doom at my hands. The boss just smiled sweetly and wished me the other end of the world.”
Jay, by the way was my Mum Joan, known as Jay because two Joans worked there at the time. Anyway Susan continues, “All went well –ish until I had to serve my first customer, when it took three journeys to get a Susan managed to find herself cup of coffee across the room a job at Granny’s Pantry tea successfully, without first spilling rooms in the mid-1960’s 99½% in the saucer! And then and she wrote down her came that forbidding thing, ‘THE experiences of working TILL’! My first connections with it proved very interesting. Thinking there, when it was in the I was playing the Wedding March on my organ, I flipped all the buttons I could find and numbers and letters flashed into life before my eyes, and I nearly got winded by Granny’s Staff Back L to R: Jay, The Boss (Molly), Joan Front L to R: Peg, Ivy and Jean the drawer
But there were some perks too, “A little reward, when a customer left half a crown on the table and it took all my control to stop myself from taking it almost before the customer had left!” It would appear from the article that Susan only lasted 12 weeks because she ends by saying, “It was not until I gave in my notice, that I realised how much I was going to miss, gentle hand slaps from Ivy, quiet telling offs from Peg, paper swiping from the Boss, and allowing of teasing and rudeness from patient, long-suffering Jay. It was an experience that I wouldn’t have missed for the world and the others would probably just like to forget, like a bad dream.”

Kop Hill Climb 2012
Kop Hill Climb promised it was gearing up for the best revival yet, and it delivered that promise last weekend, when over 400 cars and motorcycles took on the historic hill in Princes Risborough enthralling 14,000 spectators. The Kop Hill Climb has quickly established itself as a ‘must attend’ revival of an iconic motorsport event from the last century. The attendance of so many spectators to once again witness exceptional machinery take to the hill was a fitting tribute to exploits of those early pioneering racers. Saturday’s perfect weather added the final ingredient to a heady cocktail of activities and attractions, ensuring the day will be remembered for years to come by an incredible 10,000 spectators. On the hill Lord Howe declared the event opened at 10am, waving the Countess Howe off in the splendid 1914 Sunbeam TT racer quickly followed by an exciting collection of historic motorcycles and cars. By 13:15 the announcers, bands, and crowds fell silent as all eyes turned skyward for a show stopping BBMF Spitfire flypast. In the paddock there were a further 200 vintage, veteran and classic vehicles on display, a superb trade village featuring
both motor and non-motoring related goods and services. There were also many new additions to the paddock activities in 2012 including a very competitive Soapbox Challenge, the hugely popular Chevrolet sponsored Racing Bug, a sensational band line-up, a beer tent featuring the events very own Kop Hill Climb Ale and for those keen for an Earls Court Motor show experience Principal event Sponsor Chevrolet along with Stratstone Aston Martin, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Citroen, and Alfa Romeo brought along an array of modern automotive eye-candy. Sunday started overcast but dry providing both the motorcycles and many of the open topped Edwardian motorcars one more opportunity to take to a dry hill. By 11am the rain had settled in but 4,000 petrol heads braved the elements to see the hill runs and paddock activities and were rewarded with a memorable day. This year saw a record number of entrants including many vehicles not previously seen at Kop Hill. It meant numbers had to be capped so be sure to book early for 2013. Some vehicle highlights included the 1911 SCAT Type C Racer, 1920 Hispano Suiza H6B, 1921 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, 1925 Bugatti Type 30, 1933 Aston Martin Le Mans,1935 Maserati 4CS and 1935 Brough Superior 8 cylinder.
The Soapbox Challenge, held in the paddock, sponsored by Chevrolet, designed and run by Modena of High Wycombe proved a huge success. The Challenge was open to teams of 10 to17 year olds to design, build and race a soapbox cart. With 16 teams battling it out over the weekend to be the overall winner the title went to The Snails from Stewkley Scouts, who also scooped second place with The SAPs. Third place went to Prestwood Scouts’ Lean Mean Green Machine. The enthusiasm was such that many youngsters were clamouring to sign up for 2013. The winners will enjoy a visit to the RML race team headquarters, talking to the engineers about development and design courtesy of Chevrolet UK. The organisers are hoping to match, if not exceed, the £41,000 figure raised for local charities in 2011. In all, the 2012 Kop Hill Climb Revival was a phenomenal success, with Climb-goers and entrants alike excitedly talking about next year’s event.
Provisional dates for the 2013 Kop Hill Climb Revival are the 21st/22nd of September. Kop Hill Climb official website www.kophillclimb.info, the 2012 DVD is available from www.buckstv.co.uk 48

Martin Lewis - Credit Rates It’s enough to make you growl. You apply for a credit card or loan, get accepted but they inform you the rate’s far higher than advertised. Worse still, the application hits your credit score, making other cheap credit harder to obtain. This is the vicious circle of credit application, yet a few new techniques may help you square it. Here are my top ten must-knows. 1. Only 51% must get the advertised rate. Almost every card and loan’s now ‘representative APR’, meaning only 51% of accepted applicants must get the advertised rate. The rest get costlier deals. How do you find out? By applying, but each one hits your credit score. 2. No-fingerprints ‘can I get credit?’ tests. A few lenders have launched ‘soft’ searches that indicate likely acceptance without marking your file. I applaud this – more lenders should follow suit. Here are some of the top ones. 3. No-fingerprints 15mths 0% debt shift. The Fluid credit card lets accepted customers shift existing card debts to it at 15mths 0% for a low 1.5% fee. Clear the debt before the 0% ends or the rate jumps to 18.9% representative APR. However, its killer feature is it lets you pre-apply,so you’ll know your chances of getting the 0% - without leaving tell-tale marking your credit file. And not a bad way to work out if other cards are likely to accept you too. However, it’s worth noting while this is a good shorter term 0% deal, as there’s a low fee, much longer is possible - you can shift debts for up to 23 months 0%. Full info and best buys at www.moneysavingexpert.com/balance transfers 4. Lock-in debts at 5.9% for life if you’re accepted Here, applications will go on your file, but if you’re accepted for MBNA Rate for Life, all debts shifted to it within 60 days are at a guaranteed 5.9% APR (1.5% fee) until repaid, in other words, it’s NOT a representative rate. Don’t miss your monthly minimum repayments though, or you’ll lose the deal, and beware spending as it’s at a much higher rate. 5. No fingerprints cheap loan check For loans over £7,500, Nationwide is 6.8% representative APR or 6.3% for existing customers. It gets costlier for very large amounts but it does a soft search, so you’ll get a strong indication of the rate without it hitting your credit file.
6. Compare cards and find which will accept you I’m not a fan of credit card comparisons as it’s just as much about how you use cards as the rate. Yet Money Supermarket’s Smartsearch can predict likely acceptance from the 30 providers it compares – and it does this without any fingerprints on your credit file. Though do be very careful to ensure you know exactly what you’re doing and the best way to work a card once you get it. 7. What lenders really know about you There are lots of myths about what information credit files actually contain. What’s on your credit file: Your addresses, County Court Judgement and Bankruptcy record, 6 years’ credit history of credit applications and loose repayment history, and some utility history. What’s not on it? Criminal records, parking or speeding fines, your race/religion, savings, salary, CSA info, student loans, credit rejections, PPI or bank charge reclaims. 8. Earn £100 cashback and (re)build your credit score A key to (re)building credit worthiness is proving you can behave well, by getting a credit card and never missing a repayment. Of course, the difficulty is getting the card. The Aqua Reward is aimed at poor credit scorers, even some with CCJs/defaults over a year old pass its credit score. Applications will go on your file, but, uniquely, it pays a big 3% cashback on all spending up to a maximum of £100 a year. However, it’s a horrid 34.9% representative APR, so do your normal spending on it, which will help build your file. But ALWAYS fully repay each month to avoid interest and never withdraw cash – so there’s only gain, no cost to you. 9. Checking your credit files doesn’t go on your credit file It’s important to regularly check to spot any errors. When you do, you’ll often see how many times you’ve checked in the past. Many worry this hurts them, but only you see this information, lenders don’t. There are three credit agencies: Equifax, Experian and CallCredit. You can check them all online for £2 each – for what to check and a loophole to get them free, see www.moneysavingexpert.com/creditrating. 10. Don’t worry, insurance comparisons are no fingerprints Many people worry that when they’re using comparison site to find cheap insurance deals these involve getting quotes for credit (if you want to pay monthly). Yet credit reference agency Experian confirms comparisons only use soft searches, so while they may appear on your file, lenders won’t see them.

Princes Risborough View Magazine We thought we would use this small space to express how pleased we are to be in the position to promote all these great organisations and events. The Town Show looks as if it was a great success and with significantly more entries than in previous years. It would seem that with our involvement, that included the printing and delivery of flyers and the promotion of the event on these pages and in the magazine, has helped to aid this success. Please let us know if we can help do the same for your community group. We would like to hear from any new organisations and remind everyone that you will be promoted on our website as well. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk.
