Editors’ Letter Welcome to the July/August issue of Chiltern View Risborough magazine. We are very proud to have been able to produce the Festival programme again this year and would like to thank all the local businesses who have supported the Festival, by taking out an advert. Everyone who receives a magazine should get the programme as well and they will also be handed out in the town during the week preceding the festival. With the Town Council organising this event for the first time, we do hope it will be a great success and with so many exciting events happening, that plenty of people go along. We have our usual Aylesbury Theatre competition, this time for the kids (page 30) and there is also some very exciting news and the chance to win some cash every week with
the Thursday Market (details page 18). If you are a keen dancer and new to the area or just want to get involved again, then Lucy Clark Scottish Country Dance Club would love to hear from you (page 34). Also looking for new members are the Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir so give them a call if you have a voice that deserves to be heard in public and not just in the shower! (page 40). By the time you read this, Euro ‘16 will be heading for the final and Wimbledon will have started but the Olympics are also something to get excited about and we would like to wish our local athletes every success (page 42). School will be over for the summer soon so we wish everyone a lovely break with sunny weather and, for those who have taken exams, the best of luck with your results.
Until the next time...

Health Matters
Children’s Physical Health
Children who are physically active early in life and stay active throughout childhood enjoy many positive benefits to their physical health, building strength, flexibility, endurance and developing and maintaining healthy bones. Like adults, children can suffer from pain as a result of a variety of lifestyle activities. And like adults, there are number of things that parents and carers can do to prevent issues arising. If your child does complain of back pain, it is important to seek advice from
qualified professional, such as an osteopath. Children are often required to carry bags full of books, PE kits, musical instruments and other equipment to and from school. Investing in a good quality back pack that the child should wear across both shoulders, ideally with a strap across the chest to keep the load close to their body. Looking down to use smart phones, tablets and laptops for an extended period can pull the back and neck into an unnatural posture, resulting in pain.
OSTEOPATH DAVID GRAY
Placing limits on the time spent using devices and encouraging regular breaks may help to avoid problems. If your child has to use a laptop, consider purchasing a support that elevates the screen to a height that allows him or her to sit up straight to look at it. Your child’s back pain may benefit from osteopathic treatment. Using gentle manual therapy, an osteopath will help to resolve any stresses and strains that are affecting their body and relieve their pain. They can also provide lifestyle advice that may help to prevent problems returning, or to help avoid them.
Children & Babies: Cranial Osteopathy is a gentle & non-invasive treatment.

The Crown Pub
Off the beaten track a mile from Stokenchurch, nestled in the picturesque village of Radnage sits the charming pub, The Crown, which celebrates its 25th birthday this year. A local’s favourite, also popular with walkers and campers – often escaping the English weather for a cheeky pick me up. Summers are spent lounging in the beer garden sipping on the landlords’ cider or the local vineyards English Sparkling Wine. Winters, warming in front of the fire, enjoying something hearty off
the locally sourced classic pub menu. July 2nd and 3rd sees the much anticipated 6th annual Beer Festival to their impressive back lawn. Celebrating a selection of over 30 Real Ales, Craft beers and ciders. The all day line up of 20+ acts, showcase a variety of talents and eclectic artists. The evening shenanigans often create enough gossip to keep the villagers entertained for the rest of the summer.
If like many visitors you find the mix of country life, great beer and idyllic setting hard to leave, you can always book into one of the charming double rooms and immerse yourself a little longer in village life. Tel: 01494 482301 www.crownradnage.co.uk

All About Children
The Wonder Stuff
Four chart-toppers are among the line-up for this year’s Towersey Festival – the perfect end to a perfect summer. Returning to Thame Showground over August Bank Holiday, the four-day festival features appearances from Billy Bragg, The Wonder Stuff, Midge Ure and Nizlopi – all of whom have scored number one singles. They’re joined by folk doyenne Kate Rusby, the highly entertaining (and much imitated) Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain, musicians/ broadcasters Tom Robinson (BBC Radio 6 Music) and Nell Bryden (BBC Radio 2), The ONE Show’s Andy Kershaw, Welsh stars 9Bach, and The Young’uns – who recently picked up the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Group for the second year running. With a career that’s rooted in punk, folk, blues, country and soul, Billy Bragg hit number one in ‘88 with a cover of The Beatles She’s Leaving Home. His forthcoming new album, Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad, sees the troubadour perform a series of railway themed tunes recorded at rail stops across the US. 24
ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain
The Wonder Stuff visit Towersey as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations. Twenty-five years after Dizzy (with Vic Reeves) went to number 1, their new album, 30 Goes Round The Sun, has seen the Midlanders back in the charts for the first time this millennium! Midge Ure’s career is littered with huge hits, from Ultravox and Visage, to Thin Lizzy and Band Aid, via his own solo career – so expect some real surprises at Towersey from a master musician and songwriter. The festival’s fourth charttopper is duo Nizlopi. Cited as a major inspiration by Ed Sheeren, their 2005 No.1, JCB Song, oozes charm.
Nell Bryden
Away from the main stages, the enduring festival boasts a rolling programme of entertainment, from some of the best street theatre artists currently performing in the UK, to daily film screenings, spoken word events, jam sessions and more. Towersey’s new programme for younger festival-goers, All About Children, promises a range of activities for ages 5-11, with stories, Zumba Kids, music workshops, a special family concert and dance. There’s also plenty to do for ages 11+ too, with DJ workshops and space to just chill with friends. The fest’ also features a range of inspiring adult workshops and activities including firewalking and balloon rides, plus a well-stocked Real Ale Bar, and gourmet food stalls serving international flavours, glastro nosh, and quick bites. Adult Weekend tickets, for the full four-days, are just £126/£110, youth £88, child £57, under 5s free, with discounts for Towersey and Thame residents. Day Tickets are from £30 (adult), £21 (youth), £14 (child) with under 5s free. Camping available and car parking is free. For full information, including tickets, see: www.towerseyfestival.com

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Michonne. I’m a 3 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Type
26
I am a very sweet, loving and affectionate girl and I enjoy having fuss and attention made of me. I was left outside and abandoned which has made me stressed and anxious if I’m left outside on my own. I am looking for owners who have experience with my breed and who will continue to work on my issues.
stimulating environments. If you can give me the time and commitment, I have the potential to be a wonderful companion to someone who is willing to invest a little time and ensure I have lots of exercise and stimulation.
I am already much happier since I have been at Stokenchurch Dog Rescue and they are giving me plenty of mental stimulation through interactive feeding toys and taking me to calm, but
If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

Romeo update
He lives with volunteers Dianne and Lee in Selby, in Yorkshire, and is visited every day by his trainer, Helen. Dianne and Lee love Romeo! “Romeo is our first dog as volunteers”, says Dianne. “He has such a sweet but cheeky nature and is an absolute joy to be with.”
Romeo is nearly 18 months old now and has started his advanced training.
As you can see, he already recognises sounds. Helen says his quick nature helps him learn. “He masters new sounds very quickly. When he hears the alarm clock, he jumps on the bed and has cuddles.” Our deaf recipients say this is a lovely way to be woken up!
Romeo is also learning his ‘alert’. This is how he tells people about sounds. He goes to Helen and gives her a little nose-nudge. She gives the sign for ‘What is it?’, and Romeo leads her to the door. Romeo thinks this is all a fun game. However, one day his training will help him change a deaf person’s life. Romeo’s next step is matching him with a deaf recipient. We put a lot of time and thought into this. We take many factors into account, such as the dog’s character, the recipient’s lifestyle, the size of the house and so on. It’s all about doing the best thing for dog and recipient alike. We’re really pleased with Romeo’s progress. Like his Shakespearean namesake, everyone falls for him! From all of us at Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, thank you for supporting him.

Used to dance?
Why not take it up again?
Scottish Country Dancing is really good fun, very sociable and keeps you fit! You’ll get a warm welcome at the Lucy Clark Scottish Country Dance Club, which meets in the Oldham Hall, Great Missenden HP16 OAZ on Thursday evenings. This year our club is celebrating its 50th anniversary, so we must be doing something right! The club was named after Lucy 34
Clark, an enthusiastic teacher of Scottish country dancing, as well as an accomplished accordion player. We think Lucy would be thrilled to see that the club is still thriving today; we routinely have around 30 dancers enjoying themselves each week. If you want to join us, you can practice basic steps and formations with our instructors at the beginning of the evening. Then, you can enjoy dancing to the irresistible rhythms of the jigs, reels and strathspeys.
We dance to recorded music at these sessions and to live bands at our Christmas and Charity Dances. Each term we have an informal social dance for members’ enjoyment. You don’t need to bring a partner or wear special clothes or shoes - and your first evening is free! To get in touch please visit www.lucyclark.org.uk or ring our club Secretary, Liz Mitchell on 07947 000368.

Many perennials are at their best in early Summer, full of flower and colour during May and June, but then fading as the season continues. Some gardens are then bereft of bright interest for the months running up to Autumn, but with some careful planting it is quite possible to keep your plot bursting with all manner of colourful shades right into November and the first frosts of Winter . Japanese Anemones are a particularly good choice for late Summer colour providing you with waves of pink and white flowers. Look for the varieties Honorine Jobert, Prinz Heinrich or Queen Charlotte . The Penstemon is a large family of hardy perennials that will also pick up the baton of the early birds and carry on with their flowering late on. Smaller varieties such as Pink Bedder and Wisley Flame only grow to 20cm, so are ideal for the front of a bed, whilst their taller siblings like Just Jayne and Ameila Jayne shoot up to around a metre. Another benefit of Penstemons is that they are much loved by wildlife, particularly bees . 38
Crocosmia Twilight Fairy Crimson One of my favourite choices for this time of year is Crocosmia. Also known as Montbretia, this plant belongs to the Iris family and is initially grown from a corm. Crocosmia produce large spiked flowers in orange, red and yellow and once established will increase in clumps as the years go by. Growing to 60-75cm in height, Lucifer is one of the best to choose, giving you a mass of rich red flowers and bright green sword like foliage - a real winner. Perhaps the best known plant that is at its best in late Summer is the Dahlia. Grown from a tuber, they must be lifted from the ground after the first frost and kept in a
cool dry environment during Winter. This can put some gardeners off, but it really is worth the trouble as Dahlias are the star of the garden during September. Perhaps the most striking variety is the Bishop of Llandaff, a spectacular example that will delight you with stunning scarlet flowers against dark, almost black foliage. We will have all these plants ready in August, so do drop in to have a browse and if you need some help and advice - just ask! Happy Gardening, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Olympics London 2012, who can forget the pride and passion shown by so many people all over the county. Great Britain hosted a wonderful Olympic Games, which showcased the country wonderfully. The strength, determination and pride that the Team GB and Paralympics GB athletes displayed was inspirational to many. 4 years on, and we are Rio Ready! From 5th August until 21st August the Olympics will be taking part in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, followed by the Paralympics from 7th -18th September. 42
Behind the scenes, the athletes and their support teams are working hard to ensure that they are in prime condition to do themselves and their country proud. Did you know that one of the bases for the Olympic and Paralympic athletes is in the Chilterns? Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre is home to the Great Britain Women’s and Men’s Hockey Squad, GB Canoeing, GB Women’s Rugby 7s, and is also a training centre for GB Rowing and GB Para Rowing, along with other ad hoc Paralympic and Olympic athletes. Local athlete, Clare Griffiths (nee Strange) has been named in the GB Wheelchair Basketball Squad. This
will be Clare’s 5th Paralympics which is quite a feat. With final teams still in the process of being named, we would like to wish every athlete the very best success this summer. If you’re inspired by Rio 2016, keep an eye on our Facebook (www.facebook. com/chilternview) and Twitter (@chilterndirect) where you can find out how to try different sports and activities!

Summer Reads
There are few things better than relaxing on a sun lounger in the garden with a good book. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your summer reads, we have plenty to tempt you with this month. Flawed Cecelia Ahern
A book which examines the idea of perfection, Flawed focuses on Celestine, who lives in a world where nothing less than perfection will be tolerated. Infractions come with a high penalty – offenders are branded as ‘flawed’ and become second class citizens, for life. Celestine knows how to play the game, but a moment of compassion towards one of the flawed has dire consequences. Celestine could now be branded herself. Bestselling author Cecelia Ahern has delivered another cracker. This one’s aimed at a young adult market, but definitely has crossover appeal.
Best British Short Stories 2016 edited by Nicholas Royle
Now in its sixth year, this annual anthology brings together some of the best fiction from British writers published over the last 12 months. Editor Nicholas Royle has scoured the market, including other anthologies, magazines, newspapers and websites, to find this year’s selection. With a wide range of genres and voices, and a satisfying mix of authors, Best British Short 46
Stories may well introduce you to a new favourite writer.
The Hanging Club Tony Parsons
down and the tears have left tracks down your cheeks.
The Museum of You
There’s a band of vigilantes on the loose in London. With victims including a paedophile and a hate preacher, the killers are seen by many as heroes – delivering justice where the law has failed. But it’s DC Max Wolfe’s job to stop them. This is the third of Parsons’ books to feature DC Max Wolfe, and could well be his best yet. Ideal for fans of Lee Child and Patricia Cornwall, along with anyone else who loves a good crime novel, The Hanging Club will leave you questioning your own moral code. Gripping.
Carys Bray
My Name is Leon
Claire North
Kit de Waal
When nine year old Leon gets taken away from his mum, he thinks that’s as bad as it can get. But Leon’s little brother, Jake, is young enough to be adopted. Battling with grief for the loss of his brother, Leon finds an unlikely group of friends at his local allotments. However, this is the early eighties, racial tension is high and Leon is determined to find Jake, whatever the cost. This is one of those ‘just one more chapter’ books you’ll keep reading until the sun has gone
Single dad Darren Quinn’s priority is his daughter’s happiness. But what twelve year old Clover wants most is the one thing that causes Darren the most pain – the story of her mother. So Clover has decided that this summer she’ll find her own answers. Rich in description and dialogue, with endearing, believable characters, this is a very enjoyable book to while away those summer evenings.
The Sudden Appearance of Hope No one remembers Hope Ardern. Not her best friends, her parents, or the people she’s running from. Within a few seconds of encountering her, their memory is wiped clean. It’s as if she doesn’t exist. But they leave their impression on her. Now she’s on a personal mission to destroy a new computer program that’s turning people into ‘perfect’ versions of themselves, wiping their personalities in the process. A great book, which raises some serious questions about how far people will go in their quest for perfection.

Vet’s Corner
At this time of year many rabbits are spending all or most of their time outside, often enjoying a bit more freedom than over winter! Even if all seems well, it is very important to check bunnies at least once a day (ideally more often) for signs of fly strike - a serious condition where green- or bluebottle flies lay eggs on the rabbit which hatch into maggots. Some species can only affect already
damaged skin but others can attack normal healthy tissues. Large amounts of damage can quickly occur, even to internal organs, and shock quickly sets in. Flies are mostly attracted to old, ill or dirty animals, so it is important to keep rabbits clean and dry. Any eggs seen should be removed as they can hatch within a day. Besides regularly checking all animals, and ensuring that they live in clean, dry conditions, there are products that can be used to repel flies/kill maggots – please ask your vet for more information. Rabbits seem most at risk but any animal can be affected.
If concerned about your animals, please call Sprinz & Nash. Vets are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dr Aurelia Verdin BVetMed MRCVS

Risborough Area Community Bus 07941 963097 www.racb.co.uk
Drop-off for passengers is in the High Street. Most journeys cost only £1.50 or 50p for children and most concessionary passes are accepted. Anyone can use our bus, young and old, and a recent passenger survey gave us a 100% satisfaction rating.
Over 20,000 passengers a year now use our “little green bus” that runs daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services around Princes Risborough and to outlying villages.
Our trained volunteer drivers are well thought of: “these drivers are the most helpful I have been served by for 44 years” said a passenger recently. We make the bus available for use by non-profit making organisations and groups when not on scheduled service and we run outings each month to places of interest.
