Editors’ Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View Risborough magazine. This issue has been particularly busy with both advertisers, and editorial promoting local events. We have struggled for space but think we have just about managed to squeeze everyone in. It’s brilliant to be so busy. Risborough Festival is being planned by the Town Council this year and they would like to ask everyone to save the dates (details on page 26). We are looking forward to working with them to produce and deliver the programme again. We also have Railex, which is the Risborough and District Model Railway Club’s annual exhibition (page 34). We have two competitions this issue, one for Aylesbury Theatre (page 38) and one for the Beacon Festival (page 40). There will be a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) plus

2 adult tickets awarded to the lucky person who answers this question ‘Who are the headlining band on the Saturday?’ Answers please to Coralie at salesprv@live.co.uk by Friday 3rd June. You will be pleased to hear that we have made the crossword a little less challenging, as we had reports that it was a bit too tricky for some of you. We are also very excited to have a new, regular recipe kindly supplied by What’s Cooking in Thame. Finally, we really hope you like the cover this issue. It’s actually a picture of the Forgetme-nots in my garden and our lovely dog, Raffa, who many of you locally will have heard of as he is a real character! This picture was taken by my very talented daughter Niamh, as he flattened the plants!

Until the next time...

Climbers For Shade

Most plants need, if not full sun, then most of the day in a bright situation to really thrive but some don’t! Nearly all of us will have a shady spot in our garden, where despite our best efforts, nothing seems to succeed. Before you go ahead with your planting, make sure your area is ready. Dig in compost and fertiliser (pelleted chicken manure or fish, blood & bone are ideal slow release organic feeds ). If you are looking to brighten up a shady wall or fence there are a number of options that will do the job. The ‘Ornamental Quince’ or Chaenomeles bursts into colour in early Spring and then rewards you with decorative fruits in the Autumn. A great choice is Garrya Elliptica, a tough evergreen shrub that produces long catkins during the Winter months. The Garrya is a big plant that can reach over 5 metres, so do bare this in mind. Another evergreen wall shrub that will give you Winter interest is the Pyracantha. White flowers in Summer, but it is the red, orange or yellow berries from November to March that are the attraction. 18

If you are looking for a climber to cling to your wall or fence, do take a look at the Hydrangea Petiolaris. Again, this is a big plant - it will reach 15 metres in time. The climbing Hydrangea gives you a mass of white ‘Lace Cap’ flowers. Parthenocissus or ‘Virginia Creeper’ will set off and cover a huge area 20 metres plus and it is the Autumn when it all happens. The foliage turns into a riot of rea and orange hues, really beautiful in September sunshine. The Clematis Montana family is a winner in the shade too. A fantastic display of pink flowers early in the season, and then a vigorous bronze tinted foliage that left to its own devices with easily cover fence panels, sheds or evens trees in just a couple of seasons. A good standby for a situation like this is Hedera - the good old Ivy. Not perhaps the most exciting of plants, but Hedera will produce yellow and gold foilage and is as tough as old boots. A good, reliable selection.

If it’s lower, groundcover plants that are required in your shady area, the Euonymous, Cotoneaster and Berberis varieties are very good bets. Low maintenance, interesting colours and textures throughout the year, these plants can be easily pruned back if they get too tall. An excellent choice are Hostas. There is a huge diverse number to choose from, but do remember that they will completely disappear in the Winter once the frosts have hit their foliage. But fear not, they will pop up again the following March. If you need any more information or assistance do pop in. Happy gardening, see you soon,

What’s Cooking in spring? Don’t let anyone tell you that risotto is difficult to cook. The reality in fact, is quite different, risotto is one dish where the results you can achieve at home are often far superior to those achieved in restaurants. (Unless a restaurant warns you that it will take 20 minutes to cook, leave well alone!). The secret is to follow the tried and tested method, without trying to cut corners. It will take you 30 minutes, standing in front of

your stove, but with the radio on and a glass of wine by your side, who can complain? At this time of year, British asparagus is at it’s peak (late April to mid June) and it just so happens that asparagus makes the very finest of risottos. Before you start, wash your asparagus, trim off the woody part of the stem and slice on the diagonal into 5mm slices, leaving the tip whole. Bring your stock to a gentle simmer and you are ready to begin!

Risotto d’Asparagi (Asparagus Risotto)

Serves 2 Ingredients: 50gr butter A small onion, finely chopped 200gr Arborio rice A small glass of white wine 400gr asparagus 1 litre vegetable stock 1 lemon, zest and juice 3 tbs grated parmesan Salt and pepper

Method: 1. Melt half the butter in a saucepan over a low heat. Add the chopped onion and let it soften. Stir from time to time, you do not want browned onions. Once softened, add the rice 20

and stir so that the rice is coated in the butter (use a wooden spoon or spatula). Now add the wine and let it reduce to almost nothing. Add a ladleful of hot stock and again let it reduce, stirring all the time until the liquid is absorbed. Now add the asparagus and another ladleful of stock and repeat the process. This is the rhythm of risotto making. Keep adding the

stock a ladle at a time and reducing down, until the rice is “al dente”, i.e. firm to the bite but not “chalky”. Season with salt and pepper, lemon zest & juice. 2. Add the remainder of the butter and the parmesan and stir through. Leave it to rest for a couple of minutes. Ideally, serve in a wide rimmed soup plate with more parmesan offered separately.

Health Matters Persistent Pain or Chronic Pain

We all feel pain from time to time. When someone injures themselves, specific nerves recognise this as pain, which in turn triggers the body’s repair mechanism. As the tissues repair, the pain tends to improve and usually disappears. This type of pain could be argued to be

beneficial: if it hurts, you are likely to try and adapt doing whatever it is that has caused the pain, in the future, so you are less likely to injure yourself in that way again. Occasionally the pain continues even after tissue healing has finished. When pain continues after this point, it becomes known as persistent or chronic pain. This type of pain is not beneficial and in the illustration of walking; what happens is that the person will get better at using their compensatory pattern. Walking slowly, differently, shorter steps, rather than truly improving their control of balance, leading to further injury.

Persistent pain is very common and effects over 14 million people in the UK alone. It often does not respond to conventional medical interventions and needs a different kind of approach, but there are many things that you can do to manage your pain yourself with the support of your osteopath, your family and loved-ones. Keeping active, performing exercises and stretches can help, learning to pace your activities as well as treatment, are all very important and can help you to maintain a fulfilling lifestyle. For more information on how to manage your persistent pain, speak to your osteopath.

Vet’s Corner

Ticks are a bloodsucking parasite that can spread various diseases, including Lyme disease. You may have heard of them recently in connection with Babesiosis, a disease which is normally only found in dogs that have been abroad but has recently been found in some dogs which have not travelled. The most common ticks in the UK are Ixodes spp. but Dermacentor reticulatus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (which can both spread Babesia) are also uncommonly

30

found. Symptoms of tickborne diseases are normally vague and can include lethargy, inappetance and fever. As diagnosis and treatment can be challenging, trying to reduce the risk of exposure to these diseases is preferred – by avoiding tick-heavy areas in the summer months, and checking your pet daily for ticks (and removing any found using a tick-remover). There are also several parasite treatments that are designed to repel and/or kill ticks, please contact us if you would like to discuss these. Tick numbers rise during the

warmer months, but this area of the UK has a lower risk of ticks than some areas. If concerned about your animals, please call Sprinz & Nash. Vets are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dr Aurelia Verdin BVetMed MRCVS

For nearly 6 years and over 150,000 miles the “Little Green Bus” run by Risborough Area Community Bus has done sterling work in carrying over 120,000 passengers. But it’s time for a new bus to make sure we can continue to provide our vital service to the community in and around Princes Risborough.

drivers love driving it and our passengers will enjoy a great experience with more comfort and better views. It’s important to know that the bus is for everyone, young and old. Our fares are low, only £1.50 for our daily Risborough town and Longwick routes,

Enclosed in this edition of Chiltern View is the timetable for our daily scheduled service and also our Coordinator’s ‘phone number and e-mail address for you to book our outings or to arrange for private use of the bus. Last year we bid for funds from the Government and the result is our brand new Mercedes low-floor Community Bus. It can seat 15 passengers, one more than the old bus, and it’s a more modern and better equipped vehicle. Our volunteer 32

Drop-off for passengers is in the High Street. Most journeys cost only £1.50 or 50p for children and most concessionary passes are accepted. Anyone can use our bus, young and old, and a recent passenger survey gave us a 100% satisfaction rating.

Over 20,000 passengers a year now use our “little green bus” that runs daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services around Princes Risborough and to outlying villages.

Our trained volunteer drivers are well thought of: “these drivers are the most helpful I have been served by for 44 years” said a passenger recently. We make the bus available for use by non-profit making organisations and groups when not on scheduled service and we run outings each month to places of interest.

Aylesbury LNWR at RAILEX 2016

The Risborough & District Model Railway Club is proud to present the first ever full public showing of Geoff Williams’s iconic 1:76 scale Aylesbury LNWR layout. This fifty-five year old model of the former Aylesbury High Street station (once situated where Vale Park is today) represents faithfully the whole station complex - including engine shed, goods yard and adjoining gas works - as it would have looked in the year 1911. Built to a very high standard of realism the model achieves a convincing sense of scenic depth through the decreasing perspective of the background building, and provides a rare opportunity to view a pre First World War scene of Aylesbury.

Being originally built into Geoff’s loft the layout has since been adapted for public viewing, with an up-to-date digital wiring system, for its appearance at RAILEX, which it is anticipated will attract considerable interest both from local residents and from the wider exhibition-going public - particularly as this opportunity is un-likely to be repeated by the Club. Photography by Paul Wright. RAILEX is the Club’s annual Model Railway Exhibition which this year takes place on May 28th/29th at Stoke Mandeville Stadium - full details may be found on our website at www.railex.org.uk.

Mindfulness is everywhere! (but what exactly is it?)

From looking at the local newsagents supply of magazines you would be forgiven for thinking that mindfulness is all about colouring in or perhaps the nice relaxing bit that is included at the end of a yoga class. Other people recoil, horrified at the idea of ‘meditation’ associating it with sitting for hours cross legged doing nothing. Not that there is anything wrong with the above, but it isn’t mindfulness. So, to put the record straight, this is a little list of what mindfulness isn’t, and is….

It’s NOT: • Buddhism by the back door. Although it has its roots in Buddhist practice, it is not, in any way, a religious practice (although many people of different religions find that it complements their faith). • Clearing your mind. Good luck with this one! In mindfulness we practice noticing the habitual patterns of distractions and worries that our mind is constantly engaged in. And then, as best we can, we gently persuade it to come back to where we would like our attention to be. • Just meditating. Although mindfulness does include meditation it is more than this and includes a greater understanding of how our body reacts to stress and ways to help recognise our triggers to this before it becomes a problem.

It IS: • Based on research: type ‘mindfulness’ into Google scholar and you’ll find 213,000 academic papers on the benefits. • A set of simple tools to help with stress, anxiety, low mood and pain. 36

• Great for increasing focus, improving sleep, enjoying the moment, being kinder to yourself • Done by people just like you. Normal, ordinary people whose lives are full of work, children, studying, emails, to-do lists, who just want to find easy, simple techniques to turn all that off and re-discover some peace and calm. Mindfulness Chilterns has been teaching the skills of mindfulness for 4 years. See advert for more details of our Taster sessions in April and July and the next courses starting in May and September.

Books for Mother’s Day

Neal’s Yard Beauty Book

Susan Curtis, Fran Johnson and Pat Thomas

A fantastic resource for anyone who’s interested in skincare and make-up, the Beauty Book provides a wealth of advice on everything from treating dry skin to make-up application. The benefits of a huge range of ingredients are listed, from almond oil to black pepper, and there are step-by-step recipes for making a wide range of beauty products, including bath soaks, massage oils, cleansers and moisturisers.

The Happiness Project One-Sentence Journal for Mothers Gretchen Rubin

While it can seem that the days of sleep deprivation and explosive nappies will never end, children grow up pretty quickly. This lovely journal asks mums to just write one or two sentences each day, about their children, work, or life in general. It’s set out for one date per page, but with room for five years’ of memories, so the diarist can then look back to see what thought was top of their mind that day a few years ago. Each page also has a reflective quote from Rubin, which are well worth a read in themselves.

Dear Mum, From You To Me Journals of a Lifetime

We’ll admit, this is as much of a gift to you as it is to her. Unlike a normal journal, 42

Dear Mum, From You To Me uses prompts to help your mum record her memories. The idea is that she’ll pass the book back to you when she’s finished writing in it, so that you can get to know her better and have a record of her life to treasure. Some of the prompts are great conversation starters; not only will you learn more about your mum, but you’ll have an awful lot to talk about.

According to Yes Dawn French

Rosie Kitto is one of those characters it’s pretty much impossible not to like. Ever optimistic, slightly eccentric and warm-hearted to boot, primary teacher Rosie sets off from England to work as a nanny for the rigidly upper-class Wilder-Binghams in Manhattan. While there, she helps them to learn to stop living by their social conventions, and start saying yes to new possibilities. At times funny, at times poignant, and with a fair few sex scenes to liven things up, According to Yes is an easy, light-hearted read that just may leave you questioning some of your own conventions.

The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy Fiona Neill

As a Newsnight Producer, Lucy Sweeney had it all under control, but her life as a stayat-home mum is anything but orderly. From trying to dodge the yummy mummies and alpha mums at the school gates, to fantasising about Sexy Domesticated Dad, Lucy bounces from one hilarious mishap to the next. A great gift for mums of young children who sometimes wonder if everyone else’s life is quite as chaotic as their own.

Eating Well Made Easy Lorraine Pascale

If mum’s harking after a new cookery book this Mother’s Day, Lorraine Pascal’s latest endeavour should be top of your shopping list. While it focuses on healthy eating, these recipes are far from bland. They’re also (as the name implies) straightforward to follow and use ingredients you can pick up from your local shop. Most can be prepared pretty quickly, although there are some more time-consuming recipes for when the mood suits. Recipes include Sichuan Bang Bang Chicken, Mushroom and Chestnut Lancashire Hotpot, and No-Cook Chocolate Espresso Cheesecake Squares.

New Community Pavilion for Chinnor

There was much excitement in evidence as the new Community Pavilion building in Chinnor was officially opened on Saturday 19th March by none other than Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet and ‘I’m a Celebrity’ jungle fame! Tony cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the new community facility, which has bright function rooms and large changing facilities for the nearby playing pitches. A local resident had made a most impressive celebratory cake model of the building which attracted a lot of attention from those in attendance. The opening event continued all day and into the evening, making full use of the new bar and kitchen facilities. The brand new state-of-the-art single storey building off Station Road has been the result of fundraising activities by the Parish Council, coupled with grants from Sport England, the Football Foundation and South Oxfordshire District Council. There’s a suite of four team and two officials changing rooms and the facility will also be a community hub as it includes a function room, club room,

46

bar and kitchen. Chinnor Parish Council has relocated its office into the building. The Pavilion’s sports facilities and party suites will be available for hire, and a regular range of activities will be on offer from fitness classes to clubs. PCMS Design from Haddenham near Thame has project managed the whole build on behalf of Chinnor Parish Council, having previously carried out the design and specification. PCMS Design staff made site visits each week to support the building contractor as construction progressed. Care was taken at an early stage to design a building which has eco-friendly, sustainable features; there are solar PV cells on the roof which will generate electricity for the Pavilion and link into the national grid. A water harvesting tank has been installed and the grey water will be used for all WCs. A large patio area extends across the back of the Pavilion with views across the playing pitches, and the landscaping includes several new trees. The building design, with its asymmetric zinc roof, smartly integrates

the external materials of buff brick and cedar cladding which wrap into the entrance lobby. The new Pavilion building, which is on Station Road, can be found next to the playing field and St Andrew’s Primary School, and opposite the Wellington House Doctor’s Surgery and Chinnor Library. Councillor Steve Bird of Chinnor Parish Council, said during his official opening speech: “One of the most important decisions we made was the appointment of a professional design and project management company. Alex Bond and his team from PCMS Design has led us through the labyrinthine maze of building construction with great skill.” For further information about the PCMS Design service, please call 01844 202932 or email info@pcmsdesign.co.uk For details of availability of the Function Room and how to book please call 01844 350049 or email chinnorpavilion@gmail.com

The Beauty Room

My name is Fran, some of you may remember me from Body Blitz in Princes Risborough. I have been working in the beauty business for the last 20 years so I have lots of knowledge and experience behind me. I have created a small but perfectly formed salon with a quiet and relaxing environment that lends itself to providing the ideal experience just for you. I can offer a calm,

comfortable and professional place where you will see the same person every time, me! I would like to welcome all existing and new clients to come to the salon. Please come and talk to me about the Beauty treatment you would like to try and treat yourself.

Genesis Facial Waves generated by the ultrasonic penetrate deeply through the epidermis and into the dermis, increasing blood flow, plumping up the skin, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles...

It’s easy to make an appointment or even to just ask some advice, so pick up the phone and give me a call as I would love to hear from you. Take care and see you soon.
