Editors Letter Welcome to the April issue of Princes Risborough View magazine. February and March have proved to be extremely busy for us here at Chiltern Directories and we are really enjoying the challenge. We are planning the year ahead and getting ourselves organised, but that’s no bad thing and keeps us on our toes. We would like to take time to mention our excellent distribution manager, Lindy and her wonderful team of deliverers. They work extremely hard each month to get the magazines out to you, whatever the weather, and we are very grateful for their commitment. However, do please let us know if you don’t receive a magazine through your door and we will look into it.
We were very kindly invited to go along and watch the latest production ‘Breath of Spring’ by Shoestring Productions. We had a great evening and congratulations to all those involved. We felt the play was extremely well acted and the plot was witty and clever. It was easy to warm to the characters and the whole performance kept us entertained throughout. Thanks to Fiona Gammon for organising this for us. Thanks also to Photrain for this gorgeous front cover. These little lambs really do mark the start of Spring. A very Happy Easter to all our readers and do check out our community pages for lots of events taking place, including a link to all the Risborough Church’s services and the lovely, local countryside walks.

Recipe and photograph courtesy of Chef Beverley Glock www.splatcooking.net
Simnel cakes are a light fruit cake with layer or ball of marzipan through the centre, larger cakes are decorated with marzipan balls, the cake is traditionally eaten during the Easter period.
METHOD: 1.
Place the mixed fruit into a bowl, add the zest and juice of the orange and leave to soak for an hour.
2.
Preheat oven to 170oc/Gas Mark 4 and put a shelf onto the centre runner. (Aga Roasting oven - shelf on oven floor).
3.
Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, beat in the eggs then fold in the flour, mixed spice and nutmeg. Fold in mixed fruit.
4.
Divide marzipan into 12 and roll into little balls and flatten slightly.

Ever Present Danger By C. S. Peters
Author releases second novel in his World War II saga, exploring the human impact of the conflict on the Graham family and revealing how civilians often paid the ultimate price. Expertly crafted, thoroughly researched and engaging throughout, Ever Present Danger is a compelling blend of historical events and creative fiction, bringing the Second World War, and the emotional and psychological toll it took on the members of one family, vividly to light. In doing so, it brings the human experience of this great and appalling conflict sharply into focus. C. S. Peters has woven a rich tapestry of pulsating action, excitement, romance and tragedy, which is sure to appeal to a broad church of readers.
SUSPENSE SHOCK THRILLING “In Ever Present Danger, the compelling juxtaposition of narrative of the action, trepidation and comradeship within the aircrew and that of those below in occupied France is both poignant and gripping.”
Come and meet Chiltern’s author C. S. Peters who will be signing copies of his two novels: ‘ON A WING AND A PRAYER’ & ‘EVER PRESENT DANGER’ in the Dining Room of the Chiltern Brewery, Terrick, Bucks on Wednesday 18th April from 11.00am. To speak to the author for more details of On a Wing and a Prayer & Ever Present Danger, please contact: kcartref@aol.com To advertise please call 07500 048230 or email prview@live.co.uk

My name is Victor, I am a handsome 19 month old cross Rotweiler / Mastiff, which sounds a little scary, but is not. I am a real gentle giant and desperately need a new loving home. I am well trained and very obedient but I am big and strong. I’ve lived with three cats and haven’t eaten any of them, in fact we got on well. I’ve met some lovely small children with no problems so far, but because of my size I guess I’d be better with older ones. I am still young and would make a lovely family pet. Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Major, and I’m a 4 year old German Shepherd Cross. Whilst I like it here at the Dog Rescue, I really would like to go to a new home where I can settle down and have a lovely life with a new family. I’m a very affectionate chap who enjoys going for walks and chasing after tennis balls. I would make a great addition to any family as I get on with children of all ages, although I would need to be an only pet, as I’m not too keen on other dogs or cats. If you are interested in offering a dog a loving home please visit the Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm. 20

Number Please? By Mike Payne
Maureen is second from the left
Every so often the Princes Risborough Heritage Society holds an event that encourages people to come and talk to us about their lives in the town. And occasionally a rare story and brilliant picture turns up as a result. This was the case a few weeks ago when we were present at a coffee morning at the library. One lady who joined us had a unique story to tell, and one that is very topical at the moment. She remembers the days when, as Maureen Dore, she was employed as a telephonist on Risborough’s first telephone exchange switchboard. Now Mrs Maureen Woodruff, she reminded us just what an important role the now threatened Post Office building in Bell Lane played in the growth of Risborough during the 1950’s. Upstairs in that building there was a flat, and also a room that housed the switchboard. As you can see from our picture, taken around 1953, there were
five girls on five different boards, although it wasn’t always like that. In the early days there were very few phones in the town, about a dozen to be exact, so being a switchboard operator was then a fairly easy task. But by the time Maureen was employed there the telephones were springing up all over the town and it became a very busy occupation.
to refer to it as the Legion for the foreseeable future!). “Nobody had told us what to do in this situation as we had never had two fires burning at the same time before, and what made it worse I could see the flames out of our window!” said Maureen. In the end, some crews had to be called out from High Wycombe to deal with fire number two.
One of the things she remembered was that if somebody rang in reporting a fire, she had to call out the fire brigade. To do this she would ring the number that set off a siren to call in all the part-time firemen who lived in the town. In those early days of course the fire station was at the old library in Church Street, now an Indian restaurant. The siren was like the old air-raid sirens from the war and that system carried on like that for a number of years, even after the fire brigade moved to their present station. Nowadays of course the radio pagers make it easier for everyone.
Maureen has really fond memories of that job, “The team we had were a great bunch of girls, and the supervisor, Gladys Morris, was lovely to us. There was another lady who lived in the flat, and manned the switchboard on the nightshift. That was a thankless task although luckily she didn’t receive too many calls in those early years. Some of the numbers had a red ring drawn around them on the switchboard, and if any of those lit up then they had to be given priority as they were the V.I.P.’s who lived locally.”
There was one occasion when Maureen had already raised the alarm for a fire that had been reported, but then got another call to say that another separate fire had been spotted, right next door to the Post Office building on what is now the British Legion site (I’m sorry, but I will continue
I’m so pleased that Maureen came to see us with these memories as it gives an insight into a world most of us were completely unaware of. Those operators were more than just a voice on the end of a line. And the Post Office building has been far more than just a sorting office that the Royal Mail doesn’t appear to want anymore.

Roses Grow On You!
One of the best loved garden plants has always been the Rose - from modern Hybrid Teas and Floribundas to old fashioned Shrub types, Climbers and vigorous Ramblers - everyone can find a place in their garden for at least one delightful hardy example, and even if space is at a premium and you only have a balcony or small terrace, there are lots of prolific, long flowering fragrant Patio Roses that will thrive in a container.
make a great gift for any special event. Silver, Golden and Ruby weddings are all celebrated as are birthdays and other special days.
It is important to choose the right Rose for the right situation - and if you are in any doubt our staff at Askett Nurseries will be more than happy to advise you on the variety to suit you. All of our Roses are container grown, meaning they are good strong specimens and can be planted more or less at any time during the year, although the Spring months are the traditional time as the Rose will grow away quickly and reward you with lots of flowers in the first year. 34
Most Roses prefer an open sunny site, although it is possible to get excellent results in slight shade. The perfect soil is a medium loamy mix, and this can be easily achieved by adding some good rose and tree compost and adding some rose fertiliser. Roses dislike waterlogged soil, so if you garden is prone to wet conditions, break up the ground and add sharp sand or grit before planting. Our biggest selling Roses are the ‘Special Moment’ range - they
Hybrid Teas & Floribundas are good reliable plants bred for their disease resistance, long flowering time and rich fragrance. Climbers do just that, and will grow to around 4 metres high, whilst Ramblers such as ‘Albertine’ ‘Alberic Barbier’ and ‘Rambling Rector’ will set off like nobody’s business and grow to over 8 metres - massive plants that can be used to grow through old dead trees, disguising the bare wood yet utilising the established frame to produce a spectacular show. The old fashioned Shrub roses are a real favourite of mine. These are what I call ‘proper’ roses. Big showy flowers bursting with rich fragrance - some of the specimens can grow to well over 2 metres high, so choose wisely! We are now fully stocked with our Rose selection - and if they is a particular variety we don’t currently have, I’m sure we can track it down for you. Happy Gardening. See you soon,
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

The Play’s The Thing
Bennett enjoyed further acclaim with his play The History Boys. Set in a fictitious boys’ grammar school it follows a group of students preparing for the Oxbridge exams. It won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2005 and scooped Best Play at the Tonys the following year.
April sees us celebrating Shakespeare’s birthday. He’s our most celebrated playwright but who else believed ‘all the world’s a stage’? Alan Bennett Fame came knocking overnight for Bennett after the Oxford university lecturer teamed up with Dudley Moore, Jonathan Miller and Peter Cook to write and perform in the satirical revue Beyond the Fringe. One of his most-loved series is Talking Heads which was originally written as a series of hilarious character monologues for the BBC.

Harold Pinter The best thing about seeing a Pinter play is hearing everyone in the interval trying to work out what it all means. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature so you know it’s good stuff, you just may not know whether you actually like it or not. Although Pinter didn’t win critical acclaim until The Caretaker, it’s worth reading his earlier work, The Room, which he wrote in three days. The Dumb Waiter produces a lot of laughs with an excellent twist at the end and A Slight Ache might leave you examining your own relationships. Alan Ayckbourn Playwrights don’t come more prolific than Alan Ayckbourn who’s written more than seventy plays. In Absurd Person Singular, three married couples take it in turns to host a dinner party on three consecutive Christmas Eves. It was adapted into a television drama with Geoffrey Palmer, Maureen Lipman, Michael Gambon and Prunella Scales among the cast. Sisterly Feelings is a challenging Ayckbourn play following the lives of siblings Abigail and Dorcas. The first and last scenes always remain the same, whilst the decision to go with either Dorcas’s story or Abigail’s is made on a coin toss at the end of the first. Some companies rehearse just one version but others learn both.
Sir Tom Stoppard Stoppard began his career as a journalist before becoming a drama critic and then a playwright. His works often centre on themes of human rights, politics and freedom of expression. His first great success, Enter a Free Man follows the story of George who has unrealistic dreams about a reusable envelope empire he’s planning on building. In his Tony awardwinning play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead his two main protagonists are the actors playing the parts of the messengers in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Most of the action takes place in the wings during Hamlet and great confusion and ambiguity ensues. Sir Noel Coward There’s still time to catch Noel Coward’s Hay Fever which is currently enjoying a successful run in the West End. Hay Fever is a lesson in the importance of paying attention to your house guests. Set in the 1920s it deals with the four eccentric members of the Bliss family and the farce that ensues when they all invite a guest to stay for the weekend. Coward’s Blithe Spirit is also a theatrical mainstay. This time the socialite Charles Condomine is tormented by the ghost of his first wife who is hell-bent on ruining his second marriage.

Princes Risborough Tennis Club Calling all girls aged 12-18 FREE coaching course at PRLTC. A six week coaching course is being organised at Princes Risborough Tennis Club to encourage more girls to take up the sport. Funded by Bucks County Council, the sessions start on Saturday 14th April for an hour each week, and are open to members and non-members alike. Club Chairperson, Martha Blackwell, said: “We have a very active and enthusiastic junior coaching programme, but like most clubs, we find that the boys far out-number the girls. With the London Olympics this year, there is a lot of focus on sport and exercise, and this is a great opportunity for girls in this area to try the sport for free.” For more information, or to book your place, contact Club Coach Mel Ebbles on 07949 128195, email: melebbles@hotmail.com

Princes Risborough Charter Market
Was established in 1936, and this year has been our 75th Anniversary. From humble beginnings, which saw local businessmen set up a rink in a meadow just off what was then Back Lane, we now have a bowling green and clubhouse ranking amongst the best in the County. Each year we have members who succeed in county competitions and as a result play in the annual Championships at Worthing. The club is wholly owned by the membership and presently we have about 110 men and lady playing members and 50 social members. However we continually welcome new members.
