Editors Letter Welcome to the June issue of Princes Risborough View magazine. We mentioned last month that this was a very busy time for Princes Risborough and this is certainly true. This issue may just arrive in time to remind you all of the brand new family music event. Rizfest is on June 2nd and we do hope it is a great success. This month we are helping to promote the Horticultural Show which is taking place during Festival week. A schedule of events has been distributed separately and our recipe page has all the details you need to make the finest Victoria Sponge or Crusty-Top Lemon Cakes. The society work extremely hard to put this event together and it would be lovely to have many more people get involved this year.

Are you proud of your home grown fruit and vegetables that you would like to show off or perhaps you are a fabulous baker and are fed up hiding your talents? Then why not have a go and enter one of the classes, its great fun and there is something for everyone and for any age. This is the month of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and we thought we would show a couple of previous town celebrations for Royal occasions, on our front cover. The maypole dance was for the 1937 Coronation of King George VI and the other picture shows celebrations of 25 years of King George V’s reign. Both events took place in the market square. This June 4th, sees the Teddy Bears Jubilee Street party with lots of fun and celebrations in the High Street. (Please see details in the community pages). Many thanks to The Princes Risborough Heritage Society Archives for supplying the pictures.

Crunchy Top Lemon Cake INGREDIENTS:

Class 65

Victoria Sandwich INGREDIENTS: 170g (6oz) Caster Sugar 170g (6oz) Margarine 170g (6oz) Self raising flour 3 Eggs Raspberry Jam Castor sugar to dredge 1.

Pre-heat oven to 180°C, 350°F or gas mark 4. Grease two 175mm (7”) sandwich tins.

2.

Cream fat and sugar until pale & fluffy, add the eggs, then the flour. Place half the mixture in each tin and level with a knife. Bake both cakes on the same shelf, just above oven centre, for about 20mins or until they are well risen, golden and firm to the touch.

3.

8

Turn onto a wire rack. When cool, sandwich with jam and sprinkle top with castor sugar.

For the cake: 110g (4oz) soft margarine 170g (6oz) caster sugar 170g (6oz) self-raising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 extra large eggs 4 tablespoons milk Finely-grated rind of one lemon. For the crunchy topping: Juice of one lemon and 110g (4oz) of granulated sugar. 1.

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. Lightly grease a deep, 175mm (7in) round cake tin and line the base with greased greaseproof paper. Measure all the cake ingredients into a large bowl and beat well until smooth and well blended (about 2 minutes). Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for about 35-40 minutes or until the cake has shrunk slightly from the sides of the tin and springs back when lightly pressed with a finger.

2.

While the cake is baking, make the crunchy topping. Put the lemon juice and sugar into a bowl and stir until blended. When the cake is taken from the oven, spread the lemon-sugar paste over the cake while still hot. Leave in the tin until cold then turn out and remove the paper.

What a lovely treat I had when I visited Janey to learn and experience more about

The Alexander Technique.

Alexander Technique Come along and learn to help yourself improve your posture & performance Recognising unnecessary tension reduces pain, improves balance and improves your postural balance. (A skill for Life.) Its gentle hands on guidance in learning to move in a freer way, and it’s good for everyone.

Here is what pupils say: “It has changed my life for the better, if only we were taught this in schools” “Gentle encouragement and clear explanations have given me the key to retaining those good habits so nearly lost, I am very grateful”

Having had back and neck problems for more years than I care to remember, I really wasn’t sure what to expect or even if there could be anything that could help me but I was very happy to give it a try. I had heard about the Alexander Technique and thought that it was a way to re-train your body to stand and move in a better way and so generally improve your posture. I think a lot of us could benefit from this and I know that my posture is particularly bad especially being tall, so I felt this might prove very difficult. However, after a lovely welcome into Janey’s home and a short introduction, I soon realised there was much more to this technique than I had previously thought. I will definitely have more sessions with Janey. She put me at ease and was extremely professional, passionate and knowledgeable about her business. Why not give her a ring and ask about the benefits to you, perhaps it’s time to start taking proper care of your body?

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi there, I’m Oscar, a 2 year old Jack Russell. I’m a bit of a complicated young man who is looking for an understanding, adult only, new home. I sometimes get a bit worried by new people and will need to have my confidence built up by an experienced owner. However once I have obtained that confidence I just love having a good cuddle from someone I know, and I’m really very affectionate. I would benefit

20

from a quiet new home where I can settle down and just enjoy life. I get on with some dogs, but not all, but I definitely don’t get on with cats. If you are interested in offering me, or any other

dog, a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695. It would be great to see you!

Osteopathy and Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative arthritis where the cartilage which covers the ends of the bones becomes damaged. This leads to bony overgrowths at the joint called osteophytes. These bony overgrowths, together with the damaged and thinning cartilage, cause the joint to become deformed and painful. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is caused by “wear and tear” on joints as a result of strains put on an area through

poor posture, manual work and previous injuries. Rheumatoid or Inflammatory Arthritis is an auto-immune disease. That is, the immune system which normally fight infection starts to attack the cells that line the joints. This thin synovial membrane then becomes inflamed causing stiff and swollen joints, pain and lack of mobility.

improving stiffness and restoring some joint mobility. As a result of this there is often less reliance on medication and consequently less problems with the inevitable side effects of the drugs, such as gastritis. Sometimes it is not the arthritic joint that causes the pain but rather muscle spasm as the body tries to naturally protect the joint.

Osteopathic treatment can do much to ease the pain of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis by reducing swelling,

Osteopathic treatment can reduce this excessive muscle tension, ease the pain and improve movement.

For more information or to make an appointment for Osteopathic treatment, please phone The Luxton Clinic on 01844 352200.

It’s Feeding Time in the Garden…

To get the best from your plants, now they are planted in the garden or in containers, it really does pay to feed them regularly throughout the season. Vegetables are particularly hungry, and to ensure you are harvesting a bumper crop later in the year, make sure they get the right food at the right time. Many gardeners grow all sorts of vegetables in growbags or relatively small containers. Once your plants really start to grow and increase in size, the nutrients are soon exhausted, so it is vital to maintain the nourishment available. Tomatoes for instance require a fertiliser high in Potash - so once your plants start to produce flowers, go ahead and feed once a week with Tomorite or the equivalent. Tomato food is also suitable to use for hanging baskets and tubs. The flowering plants in these containers also need Potash to continue producing blooms throughout the summer, so while you’re feeding your tomato plants, treat your baskets to a feed too. An ideal slow release fertiliser is Osmocote - a granular product that is mixed into your compost at the planting up stage.Adding this makes sure your plants receive a regular feed throughout the growing season, although to get the best blooms it is advisable to use a liquid feed too. As I am sure you know, the soil in our area is very alkaline. Full of chalk, and most unsuitable to grow acid loving plants such as Azaleas, Pieris, 24

Rhododendron, Camellia and some heathers. To get round this problem, it is quite alright to grow these varieties in containers using the correct Ericaceous (acidic) compost. However, after a few months the acidity in these containers is reduced by watering - and so the compost begins to revert to a neutral balance. Your plants will reflect this by losing their rich green look. The foliage will become yellowy telling you you must increase the acidity. This is easily done by feeding with an Ericaceous fertiliser which is available in either liquid or soluble form. Laurels and Box, although not acid loving plants, will also benefit from this kind of feed. Some acid loving plants hate chalk so much that it is advisable to only use rain water as our tap water will affect the PH balance in the container. Many gardeners choose to only use organic products, and this is not a problem when feeding your plants. Bonemeal is an excellent way to promote root growth and is normally used when planting hedges and trees. Fish, Blood & Bone is a more all round source of food and will encourage foliage and flowering as well as roots. If you wish to be organic and make your own fertiliser, have a go at making a Comfrey style tea. Comfrey is an easy to grow large foliaged herb that produces a mass of leaves. Simply harvest these

leaves and place them in a large container, fill it with water, then cover and leave it to it’s own devices for a month or so. The leaves will break down in the water to produce a rich organic fertiliser that will do wonders for any plant in your garden. A word of warning however. The end product is indeed rich in nutrients and an ideal organic feed - but it stinks to high heaven! So store the container well away from the house. You will soon see the improvement in any plants you feed regularly, apart from encouraging flowering and leaf growth, you will strengthen them making them far more likely to shake off any disease or insect problems. Happy Gardening. See you soon,

A View of Risborough Circa 1643 By Mike Payne

I thought I would give you all a history lesson in today’s article. One of the talks I give to various groups in the area is about the Battle of Chalgrove, which of course took place during the English Civil War. It happened on June 18th 1643, 369 years ago, and one thing that fascinates me about that period in our history is to try and imagine how different the area would have looked at that time. It has certainly led to me thinking a lot more about how Princes Risborough would have looked in the mid-17th century? Which buildings still survive and how many people lived here? I now have a good mental picture of how the town looked. The 12th century Church of St Mary’s was there, although it wouldn’t have had the tall steeple it has today, that was added later. The house called Monks Staithe (or the Old Vicarage) in Church Lane, best known as the house that Amy Johnson once lived in, was there, as was the Manor House, as that dates from 1630-1650. Opposite the Church ‘Corner Cottage’, ‘Vine House’ and the Old Garden Centre were there. Moving towards the centre of town, Cromwell House, The Gables, and of course the Old Library building, now an Indian Restaurant, would all have been built by that time. The Market House is thought to date from around the same time as the Manor, so that was almost certainly there in some form. Beyond the Church, going towards what is now Stratton Road, it would have been fields, streams and farmland in that era. I was surprised to learn that the two cottages that house Domestic 38

Appliances and the Crystal shop were also 17th century. I had no idea they were that old. Duke Street was there, although in what form I am not sure, but it is known that the building that was Adcock and Percival is also 17th century. Moving up the High Street, there was almost certainly something on the site of the George and Dragon, and the Cross Keys buildings too. There are obviously other very old foundations hidden behind many of the 19th century rebuilds, the opticians in the High Street is a classic example where the apparently modern building hides a 15th century timber frame. The cottages in Queen’s Square, the recess opposite Costa Coffee, were definitely there, as were the thatched cottages along Bell Street. The other building that would also have had a significant presence in the Civil War days is Horsenden Manor. In fact it was very much a Cavalier stronghold at the time, which is strange when you think that John Hampden (a Roundhead) had much influence all around our

town. As for population, there are not too many accurate figures available, although one historian wrote in 1715, not that long after the Civil War, that ‘Princes Risborough had more than 100 families!’ Longwick meanwhile had ‘nigh on 40!’ To give you a further idea, the population of the Parish, which probably included Longwick, Lacey Green and Loosley Row was 1,554 in 1801, whilst Monks Risborough had 768 inhabitants that year. So there you have it, a brief glimpse at what Risborough looked like all those years ago, and the next time you walk down the street have another look at all the buildings I’ve mentioned. The funny thing is that many of the people who lived here at the time wouldn’t have even known that there was a war on! And they almost certainly wouldn’t have known anything about Chalgrove, until the news spread that John Hampden had died from wounds received at the battle there.

Email Mike at mpayne233@btopenworld.com or ring 01844 347511 if you have any information or photos you would like to share, or if you would like to find out more about the Heritage Society.

Princes Risborough Sunday Food & Craft Markets You may have noticed that green and white striped gazebos have been springing up in Princes Risborough High Street on certain Sundays in recent months. If you haven’t yet come along to see what they’re all about, make a note in your diaries now! Although Risborough already has a thriving weekly market on Thursdays, the Princes Risborough Market Group - which is made up of a team of local volunteers - felt that it would be a fantastic addition to what’s already on offer in the town to introduce a monthly food and craft market on Sundays. The market seeks to bring a variety of products to you, many from local producers - recent markets have included bread and 42

cakes, cheese, handmade crafts and cards, plants, meat, olive oil and lots more. The market runs from 10am to 2pm and will be held on the following dates for the rest of the year: June 17th, July 15th, August 19th, September 16th, October 21st, November 18th So please support this local initiative and come along to the High Street on the 3rd Sunday of the month; enjoy browsing the stalls, sampling the products, chatting to the producers and see for yourself the great selection that’s on offer, you won’t be disappointed! There are plenty of places in the town to stop for refreshments, plus remember public car parks in the town are free on Sundays. If you would like further information about the market, please contact: info@risboroughmarkets.co.uk. Find us on FACEBOOK – Princes Risborough Sunday Market

Book Review Wait ‘Til Your Father Gets Home! Mother’s Day is always a doddle to sort out: flowers, some chocs and smother her with cuddles. With June comes Father’s Day and suddenly we’re all stumped. We’ve put together a selection of books where fathers figure. Some will make you laugh, whilst others will have you crying with pity or frustration. Why not pop one in the post and start up a conversation with the old man? Harry Silver, Man and Boy, Tony Parsons Harry Silver’s life is turned upside down when the boy in him has a one night stand. Suddenly his marriage is over, he’s lost his job and he’s bringing up his son on his own. Mirroring Parson’s own life, this is the story of a 30 year old TV executive who’s forced to grow-up. This hilarious comic novel is wonderfully written and portrays the highs and lows of the touching and often tender relationship between a father and son. Will Harry ever reach maturity? Only time will tell. King Lear, William Shakespeare Talk about the original ‘daddy’s girls’. King Lear decides to divide 46

his estate between his three daughters based on how they flatter him, this apparently proving who loves him best. It’s a bit of a recipe for disaster, and Lear quickly descends into madness. Cordelia is the only daughter not to play along and is promptly disinherited. It’s a tragic story of misplaced fatherly love. Our advice to dads: read the cards from your children carefully! Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird Harper LeeScout and Jem Finch have been raised by their lawyer father Atticus in the southern town of Maycomb during the Great Depression. Atticus has the respect of both his children and the local community until he decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Incensed by injustice and racial inequality, Atticus takes on the whole town’s prejudices and finally wins a place in everyone’s hearts. Willy Loman, Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller Arthur Miller’s ultimate tragic hero Willy Loman is a salesman at the end of his career. Miller wanted to capture the struggles of the ‘everyman’ by creating this ‘low-man’. It raises questions as to what makes a man great. Willy is a truly flawed character,

constantly dispensing terrible advice to his two sons, Biff and Happy. He fails to see the love his family feels for him and this is the real tragedy. To the last, he strives to leave something for his boys so that they at least, can live out the American Dream. Allie Fox, The Mosquito Coast, Paul Theroux The young Charlie Fox documents the time spent in the Honduras jungles after his father Allie uproots the family and turns his back on American capitalism and consumerism. The book charts the unravelling of Allie as he strives to find a better life for his ‘tribe’. There’s no doubt that Allie’s behaviour is erratic and maniacal but his sense of adventure and inventiveness means you can’t write him off as a bad father. Dante, Boys Don’t Cry, Malorie Blackman What happens when fatherhood is thrust upon you? Dante’s waiting for his A-level results but instead, finds his baby daughter on the doorstep. Her mother can’t cope and Dante’s forced to face up to his responsibilities. Battling with social preconceptions and the realisation that his plans have to change, this is a rare book that tells the story of teenage pregnancy from the father’s point of view.

A Queen By Any Other Name By Daniel Hicks could participate in this game; some of the fathers had not returned home eight years previously. In the evening we sat round our wireless sets to listen to our new Queen’s speech: “… Throughout all my life I shall strive to be worthy of your trust…” In this speech the Queen also paid tribute to the support of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the speech is as valid and as relevant today as it was sixty years ago.

There won’t be many republicans in evidence in London this summer. Even non-royalists will be caught up in the pageantry of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations; an event guaranteed, even more so than the Olympics, to lift the nation’s spirits at a time of general despondency. As part of the celebrations The Queen has granted city status to four UK towns: Perth in Scotland; St Asaph in Wales; Chelmsford in England and Armagh in Northern Ireland. There was another time in history when the country’s collective spirits needed lifting – sixty years ago. Residential streets were closed to traffic so that local communities could hold street parties. Bunting and Union flags hung from lines strung from upstairs windows on either side of the streets. Makeshift tables sagged under the weight of sandwiches, jelly and custard and bottles of Tizer. Games were organised, one of which consisted of the father of a family threading a needle and cotton which he then handed to his impatiently waiting offspring who would sprint down the road to the mother. The mother would sew a button onto a square of material which the offspring would then rush to the referee. Not all the families 52

Times changed. Britain changed; in some cases beyond recognition. But there has been one constant: a tower of strength whose influence will not be fully appreciated until she is no longer with us. In a much earlier speech, made in Cape Town on her twenty-first birthday, 21 April 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth declared “… my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service…” Well, we all know now that it was to be long. We also know that she meant every word she said. How differently history would have read had her wouldbe assassin, Marcus Sarjeant, succeeded in acquiring a real gun and live ammunition. The mentally disturbed teenager fired six blank shots at the Queen as she rode in the Trooping the Colour ceremony on 13 June 1981. He was quickly overpowered by Police Sergeant John Woodcock and St John Ambulance man John Heaseman. He told them “I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a somebody.” And he had written a diary entry: ‘I am going to stun and mystify the world. I will become the most famous teenager in the world.’ Fortunate not to have been shot on the spot he escaped with five years imprisonment. But

most notable was Elizabeth II’s majestic reaction to the incident. As her horse, nineteen-year-old Burmese, panicked and reared she calmly brought him under control and continued with the scheduled ride to Horseguards Parade, comforting him with a few pats on the neck while turning to smile at the cheering crowd. This was, allegedly, the second attempt on the Monarch’s life. According to a retired senior police officer in Australia he was in charge of an investigation in 1981 after a train carrying the Queen and Prince Philip collided with a large log which had been placed on the track after police and a pilot train had passed along the route. The retired officer, Mr McHardy, who claims to have interviewed suspects including IRA sympathisers says the Australian government issued a suppression order to avoid embarrassment. There has so far been no comment from Buckingham Palace on the validity of these claims. True or false I doubt that the Queen loses much sleep over these stories. She has, over the past eight decades, proved herself indomitable. It was the Queen’s consort, HRH Prince Philip, who pointed out that sometimes a position is more important than the person who occupies that position. With typical clarity he had put the concept in a nutshell: if a nation chooses to have a figurehead then there must be a human to give that position substance, but the human is secondary to the position, not vice versa. For the past sixty years we have been fortunate in having a person worthy of that position; a person of supreme dignity and dedication the like of which this country may never see again. God Save the Queen.

Shoestring Productions – Play Readings After the success of our recent production of Peter Coke’s ‘Breath of Spring’, we have begun working hard to find a new play for next year! Choosing a play is great fun but it isn’t as easy as it sounds. Of course the main consideration is a great script but as we are just a small group we also have to think about the cast we have available, the staging requirements and the budget too. To do this we hold a number of informal play reading evenings throughout the Spring and Summer, where we discuss ideas and read through scenes of possible pieces, to get a feel of whether they would be suitable for us. If you are interested in acting in a Shoestring production, then a play reading evening would be a great place to start. Shoestring Productions are a small friendly group who welcome new adult members both on-stage and back-stage. If you would like to join us please contact either Lynda Maynard on 01844 273630 or Fiona Gammon on 01844 275216 for more information.

Lacey Green Windmill The windmill will be open until Sunday 30th September on Sundays and Bank Holidays from 2pm - 5pm. For the Diamond Jubilee weekend, we will be open on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday 3rd to 5th June. Depending on the weather we will ‘dress’ the sails with their bunting. This is a traditional way of decorating a windmill on important occasions. Admission is £2 per adult and £1 per child aged 5-15.

11th to 17th June. There are hundreds of sports and physical activities to choose from with many being free or light on your pocket. Or if you want to make sport happen where you work or live why not become a Sport Maker – we’ll provide you with all the training and support you need. There’s also the opportunity to be part of a Community Games and to celebrate London 2012 with friends and neighbours. Don’t miss out on your 2012 moment.
