Although we do not have the heavy industry, we are proud of our woodlands and chair making industry. I am sure many of you will have enjoyed all the local celebrations this summer and we understand that Risborough Festival was a great success - well done to all those involved.

I am sure many of you will have spent some time watching the Olympics and even the cynics amongst you (and I must confess I was one of those) may have felt a touch of pride and admiration for our tenacious athletes and the amazing team which (as I write this) have pulled off a magnificent British event. The opening ceremony represented much of

We really need to watch out for these lovely animals as they are struggling to survive and becoming harder to find. Tiggywinkles have provided an article on page 14 and the centre in Haddenham is well worth a visit.

Recipe of the Month

Home-Made Burgers All You Need To Know! It’s the barbecue season and nothing tastes better than delicious home-made char-grilled burgers. Follow these top tips for the best burgers around… 1.

2.

3.

8

Always choose good quality premium minced steak for the best flavour but pick one that has some fat in it – don’t buy extra lean mince as the burgers will dry out too much during cooking. Try asking your local butcher to mince some rump or chuck steak with about 20% fat content. For four quarter pounder burgers you’ll need 500g mince. Mince is fairly bland so you’ll need to add plenty of flavouring. Grated or very finely chopped onion and minced garlic form the basic flavouring but you add whatever dried or fresh herb, spice or seasoning you like. You’ll need to add 5-10ml (1-2tsp) salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper too. A handful of fresh breadcrumbs and a little beaten egg will also help to bind the mince together and prevent the burgers from breaking up during cooking. Whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together or use clean hands to mix as thoroughly as possible.

4.

Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wetted hands. To get perfectly round shapes press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over handle the burgers or they will be tough and dry when cooked.

5.

Ensure that burgers are cooked all the way through and there is no pinkness in the middle. To check this press the burger down with a fish slice – if there are pink juices oozing out then cook for a few more minutes.

6.

If you want a change from the classic sesame seed bun why not serve the cooked burgers on top of wedges of toasted ciabatta bread spread with a little mustard mayo or pack into warmed and split pitta breads with salad or coleslaw.

7.

Try a fresh tomato relish instead of ketchup – just peel and finely dice a couple of ripe plum tomatoes and mix with a little olive oil, fresh chopped basil, a pinch of sugar and salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Book Review - Saved by the Bell

September signals the end of the summer holidays and the start of the new academic year. While you’re replenishing supplies of notepads and pens, why not pick up a novel that’s based in a school? Fail to find our book selection highly entertaining and… see me afterwards. Never Let Me Go Kazuo Ishiguro On the face of it, Hailsham boarding school in the heart of the English countryside seems idyllic. The students are nurtured, encouraged to stay healthy and are protected from the outside world. The story centres round the love triangle of Kathy, Ruth and Tommy. As a now thirty-one year old, Kathy begins to reflect on their time at Hailsham and what it means to have been a student there. Without wanting to give the plot away, Hailsham has a dark secret and only a special type of person may attend. Ultimately, it’s a story about love, friendship and hope. Skippy Dies Paul Murray Opening with a dramatic doughnut-eating contest in which Skippy does indeed kick the bucket, this is a wildly funny and equally gross insight into the minds of teenage boys. Overweight genius Ruprecht Van Doren and his roommate Daniel ‘Skippy’ Juster attend Seabrook College for Boys in Dublin. Beginning at the end, it then goes back in time to follow Ruprecht in his pursuit of Lori from the neighbouring 30

girls’ school. If you thought teenage boys were obsessed with flatulence and other bodily functions, you’re right. They’re also children struggling to find their identity and for that, the book is incredibly endearing. The Catcher in the Rye J.D. Salinger From the opening paragraph we’re in the mindset of the rebel with a cause, the ‘catcher in the rye’ himself, 16 year old Holden Caulfield. He’s been expelled from prep school and through his biting narration, edgy cynicism and general teenage angst, we’re all reminded what it’s like to be adolescent. With its profanity and sexual content it remains on many banned book lists and thus has become an anthem for youth. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone J.K. Rowling From the moment Harry, Ron and Hermione board the Hogwart’s Express at platform 9¾ we know that school will never be the same again. Who wouldn’t want to dine in the Great Hall, be tutored in muggle studies and represent your house at Quidditch? Featuring every aspect of boarding school life wizardstyle, it’s an absolute must-read.

Goodbye, Mr Chips James Hilton This time it’s the teachers’ turn to have a voice. ‘Goodbye, Mr Chips’ is the sentimental tale of Mr Chipping, a much-loved staff member at a fictional boys’ public boarding school. Failing to connect with the pupils at first he eventually finds his confidence and a new love. Ok, it’s a bit mushy and sentimental but there’s something about these warm recollections of the retired schoolmaster that will melt your heart. Beautifullywritten and wonderfully nostalgic it’ll have even the former bad boys remembering school through misty eyes. The Blackboard Jungle Evan Hunter Set in New York, this is a gritty and realistic portrayal of a new teacher’s struggle to maintain discipline in an inner-city school. It may have been set in the 1950s but the subject matter is timeless, dealing with violence in a way that rings as clear as the school bell within today’s society. It has a brilliant climax that’s worth the wait and will make your old comprehensive feel like something from Enid Blyton.

We are pleased to be an accredited FA Charter Standard club and strive to be able to provide football for all our local young people in a safe and enjoyable environment. We are committed to continually improving the level of coaching across all the age groups, and getting the right balance between having fun

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Beetle and I’m a two year old Jack Russell Terrier. I’m a bit on the small side, but don’t be fooled – I’m full or character, an energetic little dog who loves human company and interaction. As a result I will need active owners who enjoy long walks. I’m OK with other dogs, possibly cats, and would suit any home with children aged 6 and over. If you are interested in offering me, or any other dog, a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695. Your Health: Diabetes

What is diabetes Diabetes is a condition where the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. This is because your pancreas does not produce any insulin, or not enough, to help glucose enter your body’s cells. Or it could be that the insulin produced does not work properly (known as insulin resistance). Insulin is the hormone produced by the pancreas that allows glucose to enter the body’s cells, where it is used as fuel for energy so we can work, play and generally live our lives. It is vital for life. What is Type 1 diabetes? Type 1 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing

cells in the body have been destroyed and the body is unable to produce any insulin. Insulin is the key that unlocks the door to the body’s cells. Once the door is unlocked glucose can enter the cells where it is used as fuel. In Type 1 diabetes the body is unable to produce any insulin so there is no key to unlock the door and the glucose builds up in the blood. What is Type 2 diabetes? Type 2 diabetes develops when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly (known as insulin resistance). Insulin acts as a key unlocking the cells, so if there is not enough insulin, or it is not working properly, the cells are only partially unlocked (or not at all) and glucose builds up in the blood. If you are diagnosed with Diabetes a healthy lifestyle is very important. Eat well You should still be able to enjoy a wide variety of foods but your eating habits are important and will help you manage your diabetes better. Avoid skipping meals and eat 3 meals a day. Try to eat a low fat diet, eg skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, low fat yoghurts, lean meat, less cheese, and eat more fruit,

vegetables, beans and lentils. Also try to avoid too many sugary foods and drinks. Stay active Being active is good for all of us but particularly so if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. Every form of physical activity counts. We are all recommended to achieve at least 10,000 steps a day – why not consider buying a pedometer to log how many steps you take? Emotional wellbeing Being diagnosed with diabetes can be a very difficult time. It is often the time when a lot of information is given and this can leave people feeling overwhelmed, confused and sometimes depressed. These responses are common and natural. Take it one step at a time and remember there is a lot of help available for you from your GP, diabetic nurse, podiatrist and many other diabetes specialists. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes it is important to care for your feet.

Plants For Shady Places…

Well, what a gardening season that was. With all the rain and cold weather, it was the worst in living memory - but we gardeners are a hardy optimistic bunch - our rain gauge is always half full, not half empty - so we’ll just dust ourselves down, dry ourselves out and look forward to the Autumn season. By now, most of the tender bedding and container plants will be showing signs of wear and tear - and it’s now you must think about putting some colour into your garden for the forthcoming Winter. The most popular plant for low maintenance colour is of course the Winter Pansy. These tough little plants can take anything the weather throws at them, whether that be freezing snow and ice or arctic winds. They come in a huge array of colours - from bright and brassy reds and yellow right through the spectrum to the cooler and paler light blues and white. The Winter Pansy is a highly versatile plant and will flower and flower either in beds or hanging baskets and containers. A similar plant is the Viola. Again, hardy to cope with the sharpest 42

of frosts , the Viola has a smaller flower head than the Pansy - and many gardeners prefer their more delicate appearance. As with the Pansy, Violas are available in many colours. This is also the time to plant Primroses and Polyanthus. There are two flowering times on offer - the early flowerers will bloom before Christmas, the later ones will show in early Spring. I prefer the Primrose as they have a shorter stem, whilst the Polys have a taller more showy appearance. Both are fully hardy and will give you great blooms. Wallflowers go in now too - we have them barerooted - available in bunches of ten. I must admit to the novice gardener, they don’t look particularly attractive at first sight - but get them in as soon

as you get them home, give them a good soak, then leave them to it. They will reward you with lots of scented flowers in early Spring. Wallflowers are one of the first signs that the Winter is on it’s way out and the warmer weather is around the corner. Sweet William with it’s rich red flowers, Myosotis ( Forget Me Not) in pink or the more traditional blue are two more bedding plants that should be planted in the Autumn. And don’t forget your baskets and containers - there is a huge range of hardy plants that will liven up tour tubs and pots in Winter. Ivy, Thymes, Santolina, Sedums, Euonymous and Rosemarys are just a selection of what is on offer. Plant them all now confident of success. This is also the time to plant Spring Flowering bulbs - Daffodils, Tulips, Crocus etc - we’ll have a look at those next month. And finally I’d like to tell you about our new teashop and farmshop that will open next Easter. We will be using local produce in both shops and offering our customers old and new some fantastic cream teas, cakes, sandwiches etc. When you come in next you’ll notice the building work going on. Happy Gardening. See you soon,

Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Martin Lewis - Energy Energy prices are likely on the rise. Don’t take my word for it – British Gas has warned customers the price it pays will go up by 15%, and this could push up folks’ bills by £50 come Christmas. While we may be hitting summer, many can cut £100s off their bills and prevent hikes by acting now. Here are ten things you need to know. 1. Take two minutes to check what you can save – often more than £250 Millions of people are overpaying. A typical home on a standard tariff pays £1,320, the same home on the cheapest pays £1,030. Not checking’s like chucking a wad of tenners on the fire to keep warm. 2. Compare, switch, get cashback, save £100s Your cheapest deal depends on the tariff, region and usage. The easy way to find what you can save is plugging your details into a www.consumerfocus.org. uk approved comparison site. Do this via the links on www.moneysavingexpert.com/gaselec and if they switch you, after three months you get cashback or freebies. Energyhelpline pays £15 per gas, electricity or dual switch. For dual fuel deals, MoneySupermarket pays £30 cash and uSwitch a crate of wine – you don’t get these going direct. Those not online can these to compare: Energy Lynx 0800 849 7077 and Uswitch 0800 051 5493. 3. How to guarantee no price hikes A clever tariff launched last month. EDF’s Blue is nearly, but not quite, the cheapest, so most customers save large amounts, but it’s easy to miss in comparison results. I’m highlighting it as it has three big advantages. The rate’s fixed until Sept 2013, so it guarantees no hikes. Thereare slightly cheaper fixes, but the key’s there’s no exit penalty for leaving before the fix ends. Finally, it promises to email you if anyone launches a tariff that saves the average user over £1 a week (£52 a year). 4. Fix NOW if you can’t afford rises With price hikes predicted, locking in to a cheap fixed tariff insures you against rises. So if a rise would be unaffordable, you should do it. Better still, EDF’s fix above and Sainsbury’s Online Price Freeze have no exit penalties. If other prices fall, you can ditch them. 5. If possible, pay by direct debit to save an additional 5% to 10%. Paying by direct debt gives a further discount. Although dual fuel deals (gas and electricity from

one supplier) are usually cheapest, it’s not always the case. So, when doing comparisons, check the cheapest separate suppliers too. 6. FREE insulation - energy efficiency can seriously cut bills. Installing loft and cavity wall insulation can cut £300 a year from bills. Each normally costs around £175, but currently EDF and Tesco Energy are giving and installing it free to anyone with a suitable home, not just their own customers. Other suppliers will even pay you £200 to get insulation if you’re on certain benefits, including pension credit. 7. Got electricity only? If you don’t have gas, don’t think the rules are any different – you can still save. Use the comparisons above. 8. What if you’re on a prepay meter? Over three million UK homes use prepayment meters that allow you to pay for your gas or electricity on a pay-as-you-go basis. You top up your energy via a key or card, which you can credit at newsagents, post offices and garages or, sometimes, online. They can help to budget, but you usually pay more for energy, so if you want to ditch them, follow these steps. Step 1: A credit meter (where you get bills) is cheaper, so see if you can convert. Some allow it for free. See www.moneysavingexpert.com/ prepayenergy for a list and more help Step 2: If it’s unaffordable, compare and switch. Energyhelpline,uSwitch and Moneysupermarket all let you do comparisons for prepayment tariffs. Step 3: When switching, favour companies that may convert you to bills for free. 9. Fight unfair energy direct debits Direct debits are the cheapest way to pay, but they’re based on estimated usage. Providers can get them wrong, or hike them unnecessarily. If that happens, you’ve a right to know why your direct debit is set at the level it is, and if inappropriate, get it changed. If the company won’t play ball, you can take it to the energy ombudsman. 10. Eon has promised not to hike prices this year. Eon promises it will keep its tariffs where they are now until the end of the year (though if others do hike prices, I suspect it’ll follow suit in early Jan). Don’t assume that means you should stick with it. If you’re already paying over the odds, why lock yourself in? It’s worth doing a comparison to see where the land lies. If you really want fixed prices, switch to a cheap fixed deal instead, as the guarantee will be longer.

An Unlikely Event By Mike Payne

The Risborough Heritage Society meetings are very useful to us, as members and non-members who attend can swap photographs, memorabilia and memories. Quite often those meetings can produce a surprising item or two and a long forgotten occasion. One such memory was reawakened recently when a lady brought in some photos of an event held one summer in Risborough, which you may, or may not remember. I must confess that I have no recollection of it at all. It was a Soap Box Derby, and it was held on the fields adjacent to Pyrtle Springs. We are trying to date the event and if you remember it then we would love to hear from you, especially if you entered a homemade Soap Box yourself. It obviously attracted a huge crowd of spectators and judging by the photos it took place during a very hot and dry summer. Part of the fun of entering such an event was in building your own cart. I’m sure there are many of you out there who, as children, built a trolley using wooden boxes and some

old pram wheels, and I know that quite a few of you went to great lengths to ‘customise’ your ‘vehicle’, lots of flags, wing mirrors and chrome. Again, judging by the photos, there must have been a few dents in the ‘cars’ and more than a few in the drivers too! It was good to know that the everreliable Risborough branch of the St John’s Ambulance brigade was on duty, as always at such events. We think that it was held around 1971, which might explain why I don’t remember it, as I had a new baby daughter at the time! And one other clue is that somebody remembers that the Risborough Carnival Queen that year was present, sat in a posh sports car, watching over the races, and her name was Sandra Howard. Perhaps Sandra could give us a call. And maybe it is something that the town could do again, after all there must be plenty of pram wheels available ‘up the dump’. Perhaps we could do a Soap Box Derby speed trial down Kop Hill and call it the ‘Kop Hill Kamikaze

Day’! The St John’s Ambulance would have to be out in force for that one, that’s for sure! What am I saying? Health and Safety, Health and Safety! And whilst on the subject of requests and Risborough Carnivals, we are on the lookout for photos from the processions that were held through the town, over a number of years. If you were a Carnival Queen, or you appeared on a float, then we want to hear your story and see any pictures you may have. Another request for the readers of this column is to ask if you have any photos of a Walls Coach, from the coach firm that was based in Kingsey? Walls was a company that did many a day trip out of Risborough, as well as ferrying many of the Molins and other factory staff members from home to work and back again. If you do have a photo of a Walls Coach, or indeed photos from a day trip on one, then again I would love to hear from you.
