Editors’ Letter Welcome to the November/ December issue of Chiltern View magazine. We are pleased to say that the magazine has been really well received in the new areas. Our distribution managers and deliverers have done an excellent job as it hasn’t been easy organising all these new rounds. Thank you all for your hard work. We welcome additional community information from these areas – spread the word about all the fantastic things happening near you, email us at prview@live.co.uk (the next magazine will be the Jan/Feb 2014 issue and the copy deadline is Dec 1st). It was, on the whole, lovely weather this summer and even into the autumn it has
been unusually warm. It is however, starting to get chilly now and the trees are starting to change. It’s a busy time of year with Halloween, Fireworks and then Christmas all just around the corner. We have lots of advertisers promoting seasonal events and our community pages give a wide range of information about what’s going on in the local area. Something to suit everyone. We would like to wish all our readers a very Happy Christmas and New Year. Rather than send out Christmas Cards, we prefer to donate the money instead to a local charity. If you know of a local charity that would benefit from a Christmas donation, please let us know and we will consider it for this years charitable giving.
Until the next time

Recipe of the Month
The Perfect Christmas Pud Makes 4 x 1 pint (450ml) or 2 x 2 pint (1 litre)
Preparation time 30 minutes plus 5-6 hours steaming time, plus 2 hours re-steaming on the day of eating. Ingredients:
• 225g/8oz golden caster sugar • 225g/8oz vegetarian suet • 340g/12oz sultanas • 340g/12oz raisins • 225g/8oz currants • 120g/4oz chopped candied peel • 120g/4oz plain flour • 120g/4oz fresh white breadcrumbs • 60g/2oz flaked almonds • Zest of 1 lemon • 5 eggs, beaten • 1level tsp ground cinnamon • 1level tsp mixed spice • 1 level tsp freshly grated nutmeg • Pinch of salt • 150ml/5fl oz brandy or rum Method:
1. Mix together all the dry ingredients. 2. Stir in the eggs and brandy and mix together thoroughly. 3. Scrape the mixture into 4 x 1 pint (450ml) or 2 x 2 pint (1 litre) lightly-greased pudding basins. 8
4. Put a circle of baking parchment and foil over the top of each basin and tie securely round the rim with string. 5. Make a string handle by tying both round and over the basin, to make it easier to pick out of the pan after cooking. 6. Put the basins in a large steamer of boiling water and cover with a lid. 7. Boil for 5-6 hours, topping the boiling water up from time to time if necessary so that it doesn’t boil dry. If you don’t have a steamer, you can use a large pan and stand the basins on inverted saucers placed in the base. Pour in boiling water to come a third of the way up the sides of the pudding bowls. Cover and steam as before. Cool. 8. Change the baking parchment and foil covers for fresh ones and tie up as before. Store in a cool cupboard until Christmas Day. 9. To serve the pudding on Christmas Day, steam for 2 hours and serve with brandy butter, rum sauce, cream or home-made custard.

It’s Garlic time!
The Autumn is just the time to plant Garlic. Our chalky, alkaline soil does preclude us from growing a number of acid loving plants such as Azaleas, Rhododendron and Camellias, but Garlic loves it and will thrive in a free draining spot in your vegetable patch. To get the best crop prepare your site. Choose a sunny, open position , clear any weeds from the area, and if necessary add some grit to help with drainage. To add extra nutrients and goodness, dig in some farmyard manure or compost. Garlic needs rich well fed soil to give you the best results. Garlic comes in a bulb, so you need to gently pull it apart to give you cloves. Each bulb will give you around six cloves. Plant the cloves around six inches apart, around 2 inches beneath the surface of the soil and make sure you plant with the root end down (the thicker part of the clove). Give them a good watering in, and scatter some chicken manure pellets around the area. That is basically that! If we do enjoy a warm dry spell, make sure the Garlic get some water. In the early Spring give the now newly shooting plants a dressing of potash to add that extra push before harvesting. It will be obvious when the Garlic is ready to lift. As with Onions the foliage will begin to change to a straw like colour, and start to fall 20
away. Harvest the now fat bulbs and , if the weather is forecast warm and sunny, leave them to dry out on the soil If wet weather is due place them on a clean flat surface in your greenhouse. In a few weeks, the Garlic will be ready for use , and if stored in a dry, cool environment will keep for many months. We grow lots of Garlic on our allotment and these are the varieties we have found to be the most successful. Lautrec: A very versatile variety, hailed by many chefs as having the best flavour. Carcassonne: An exceptional pink cloved variety that grows vigorously. Early Purple: Large purple bulbs, the earliest to harvest. And don’t forget, it’s also the time to plant Onions and Shallots. Happy gardening,
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

What kind of Christmas Shopper are you? by Kate McLelland
By the 1st December all your presents will be immaculately wrapped, labelled and stored in boxes under the bed. Organised Shopper, you are the envy of all your chaotically disorganised peers. But watch out - are you ready to face the bitter resentment of friends who shopped too late to get that ‘must-have’ gadget?
It’s that time of year again, when you start to make lists of the Christmas presents you need to buy for your nearest and dearest. We all approach our Christmas shopping in different ways, so see if you can spot the shopping technique that most resembles yours in the list below: 1 The Very, Very Early Bird You are the shopper who can be found cramming your basket full of cut-price wrapping paper, Christmas cards and toiletry gift sets in the January sales. Well done, Very Early Bird. You might save yourself a good deal of money, but will you remember where you’ve hidden all those cut-price goodies by next December? 2 The Last Minute Man You just can’t find the motivation to buy presents until three hours before the shops are due to close on Christmas Eve. Then you dash round the streets with a look of sheer panic on your face, desperately hoping that the items on your list are not out of stock. Come on, Last Minute Shopper – you know you can do better, but deep inside you crave the adrenaline rush that comes from holding back till the very last moment. 3 The Smugly Organised Shopper It’s mid September and not only have you already compiled your gift list, you’ve probably placed your first online order, for that ‘must-have’ new gadget that will be all the rage this Christmas. 24
4 The Wishlister Do you remember the “Good Old Days” when Christmas presents were a surprise? When the mystery surrounding Christmas gifts led to a well-intentioned, communal impulse to pretend everything was lovely on the day (“Oooh, a hot water bottle cover just what I needed!”)? Nowadays all recipients seem to do is mentally tick off gifts that they previously entered on their Amazon wishlist. Now there’s no need to spend time thinking about what your nearest and dearest would like, when all you need to do is follow an onscreen link and click a button. Dear Wishlister, while we understand your desire to buy something your friend or relative really wants, we’d like to see you use a little more imagination and effort this Christmas. 5 The Crafty Maker You’ve been watching too many Kirstie Allsopp shows on TV and you now believe that the way to show real love at Christmas is to give friends and family a gift that you have made yourself. I know, Crafty Maker: you can’t wait for the look of surprise on your family’s faces when they open their presents to find something that you have carefully crafted out of papier mache and driftwood, but please don’t be disappointed if their wan smiles of appreciation suggest that they would have preferred the latest video game. Do you recognise yourself in any of these descriptions? If so, don’t panic. Christmas a unique time of the year when the effort we make for family and friends is all-important. However you approach your Christmas shopping, it’s always the thought that counts.

I am a dear little girl who loves human company and I am good with other dogs. I don’t like to be handled too much and I prefer to be treated as a dog. I will need an active home with owners who will ensure I have doggy friends once home. I will make a wonderful addition to your home.

I could live with another dog (subject to us meeting), possibly cats and I would prefer a home where any children are aged 8 years and over. If you are interested in offering me, or any other dog, a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695. Drop-off for passengers is in the High Street. Most journeys cost only £1.50 or 50p for children and most concessionary passes are accepted. Anyone can use our bus, young and old, and a recent passenger survey gave us a 100% satisfaction rating.
Over 20,000 passengers a year now use our “little green bus” that runs daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services around Princes Risborough and to outlying villages.
Our trained volunteer drivers are well thought of: “these drivers are the most helpful I have been served by for 44 years” said a passenger recently. We make the bus available for use by non-profit making organisations and groups when not on scheduled service and we run outings each month to places of interest.

‘Booted Up’ And Ready For Business
The Boot at Bledlow Ridge has had a rocky road in the past few years but thanks to a huge amount of hard work and a brand new refurbishment, new managers Emma and Andy Goddard look like they have found winning formulae. The aim of the new look is to appeal to locals and customers wanting a drink, as well as diners wishing to enjoy delicious food from a varied and creative menu, prepared by head chef Andrew Hipgrave. With years of experience, having previously been head chef at a restaurant in Cookham, he has devised a menu with something to suit everyone. Emma and Andy have exciting plans for the pub, including quiz and themed nights, with the occasional live band as well. The atmosphere is cosy and
relaxed whilst mixing both a traditional and modern look which attracts couples, families and dog walkers. They can even cater for larger parties and functions as the lovely, large garden can easily accommodate a marquee. During the winter months there is a semipermanent marquee for extra drinking or dining space. Emma in particular, having
grown up in Bledlow Ridge, knows of the importance of keeping this pub, as it is such an important part of this village, a meeting point and it is a place to link the community. This is a lovely pub and wonderful that it has been re-energised both for the villagers of Bledlow Ridge and the surrounding areas. The future’s looking extremely bright for the Boot and with both the bar and restaurant already very busy, it is advisable to book if you want a table. The Boot also offers coffees and pastries from 10am Tues-Fri. Make this your choice for your next evening out and enjoy a drink or a meal in the comfortable yet stylish surroundings of the Boot and don’t forget to tell your friends.

The Boot boasts a huge garden for when the weather is warm enough, but if not a cosy log fire welcomes you inside. Summer and winter marquees can cater for larger events or simply as extra room for drinks or a meal. We are also able to cater for various functions so give us a call.

Duke of Edinburgh Award by Emily Hyde
My Experience I completed my Bronze D of E award earlier this year. For my Physical section, I did three months of swimming with my mum, my best friend and her mum at Risborough Springs. It was really rewarding, as I was able to exercise as well as spending more time with my friend. For my Volunteering, I helped at the Tuesday Brownies unit, which my younger sister regularly attends. I had already been volunteering for a few months, as I love working with younger children and taking part in activities that are no longer available to people my age, for example going on a brownie holiday and holding a “secret” midnight feast for all of the girls. I spent three months on this although I plan to continue helping long after my sister has left. I continued to learn piano for my skill section. I have already been learning the instrument for 9 years and had completed my grade 1 last year. I completed this over 6 months, finishing with my grade 2 exam. The expedition itself is split into two parts, the practise and qualifying expedition. For the Bronze award, you have to walk for a minimum of 6 hours each day for two days around the Chiltern Hills, camping overnight. This included planning a route before, carrying all of our equipment, food and sleeping gear in a rucksack. The practise walk was a complete disaster for our team as we managed to plan our route over several paths that did not exist, meaning we had to wade through knee-high stinging nettles to reach a proper path. The qualifying expedition was much more successful and we planned our route to reach all of the pubs between Great Missenden and Northchurch – our topic for the expedition project. We setout early and arrived late after at least 3 hours of unplanned stops simply because we could. We camped overnight with no trauma and played Frisbee with the other DofE expeditionees at 38
The Facts • Duke of Edinburgh Award is open to anyone between 14 and 25 years of age • There is the Bronze, Silver and Gold award to complete in this time • It is comprised of four parts; Skill, Volunteering, Physical and Expedition with a project to be completed during the expedition • It is a great way to discover new hobbies and make new friends • Outside of Buckinghamshire, not many people complete the award so it can be used when applying for university and jobs as extra credit
the campsite. The second day was almost as successful although a fail in navigation meant we accidentally crossed through a waterlogged sand quarry! Other than that, the weekend was a success and we arrived at our end meeting point with our heads held high. The Duke of Edinburgh award is a great achievement and you come away from the experience with new skills. Although I know many people who complained during and after the expedition was over, nearly all of us are continuing on with our Silver award next year. I would highly recommend the award to anyone within the age limit who has not yet started.
