Editors’ Letter Welcome to the March/ April issue of Chiltern View (Risborough Area) magazine. This Winter has been described as one of, if not ‘the’ wettest on record. We have been relatively lucky compared to the awful flood damage in some parts of the country but all the same, there has still been some serious damage to property locally. Flooded roads have affected journeys and damaged roads and high winds have destroyed garden fences and walls etc. If you have been unlucky enough to have been personally affected by our adverse weather, then we have a large number of trades people in Chiltern View who may be able to help.

We are looking forward though and there are some signs of Spring, with new bulbs just shooting through the wet ground. We will start thinking about our gardens again so why not cheer yourselves up with a visit to Waterperry Gardens (pages 6 & 7) or our very local Askett Nurseries (pages 32 & 33), where you can buy your plants and enjoy a nice cup of tea and a cake in their excellent café. Please remember that not only do we have the printed magazines but you can also see us online at www.chilterndirectories.co.uk or, now that we have embraced social media, why not follow us on Twitter or like our Facebook page.

Until the next time

Waterperry Gardens

Waterperry Gardens is more than just beautiful gardens, it is home to a Gallery and Gift Barn, a Garden Shop and Plant Centre, a fantastic Teashop and a Museum of Rural Life. There are a whole host of events held throughout the year and a full programme of arts, crafts and gardening courses run on site. It truly is a hidden gem amongst Oxfordshire’s rolling countryside just a few miles from Thame and the M40. The stunning 8 acre ornamental gardens are bursting back to life as spring is in the air, with Scillas, crocus (spring bulbs) and Brunneran blooming in March. April brings the county flower of Oxfordshire to the gardens as Fritillaries fill the wild flower meadows and May leads the gardens into full bloom as the herbaceous border flourishes until late September. There really is something special to see every month of the year. The Plant Centre and Garden Shop are a gardens lovers paradise, customers can take a piece of Waterperry home with them as most of the plants on sale are propagated from the gardens and grown on site in the nursery. The Garden Shop has a great range of garden sundries, tools, bulbs and seeds, including Waterperry apple juice. The delicious juice is made from Waterperry grown apples and juiced on site in the Orchards. The Gallery and Gift Barn are a shoppers delight with unique ideas for the home and garden along with some great gift ideas for family and friends. It truly is a paradise for tranquil shopping trips 6

with a wide variety of products to choose from and free parking. Miss H’s Teashop prides itself on producing freshly prepared home cooked food using local ingredients. With delicious hot and cold lunches and a fantastic selection of cakes, it really is worth a visit. Waterperry holds a huge range of events throughout the year ranging from family fun activities like The Easter Bunny Hunt (5th – 21st April), Gnometastic (24th May – 1st June) and summer theatre (21st Aug) to specialist horticultural weekends such as Saxifrage Day (23rd March), Fritillary weekend (19th & 20th April) and the Rare Plant Fair (29th June). To keep up to date with what is going on at Waterperry visit the events page at www.waterperrygardens.co.uk – you don’t know what you could be missing! Waterperry is more than just a beautiful place to come and explore, it’s a place to learn. With a full programme of arts, crafts and gardening courses, it’s an opportunity to try something new or even training for a career change. Some of the courses on offer include RHS Levels 2 and 3, What to do in your Garden month by month, Garden History and Keeping Bees. With a tempting selection of arts and crafts from Willow Structures, Collagraph printing, Watercolours and Stained Glass. Recipe of the Month

Apricot and Apple Strudel Serves 4 - 6 Layers of light and crispy filo pastry wrapped around a sweet fruit filling makes a delicious pud that tastes just as good warm as cold. Serve with tangy crème fraiche, thick Greek yogurt or vanilla custard Ingredients:

• 2 large cooking apples • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • 85g no-need-to-soak dried apricots, chopped • 50g fresh white breadcrumbs • 1 tsp ground mixed spice • 7 tbsp Demerara sugar • 6 large sheets filo pastry (approx 200g) • 50g unsalted butter, melted • Icing sugar, for dusting Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/ Gas Mark 5. Peel, core and finely chop the apples and place in a bowl with the lemon zest, apricots, breadcrumbs, mixed spice and 3 tbsp of the Demerara sugar. Mix well. 2. Place 2 sheets of the filo pastry, slightly overlapping, on a large greased baking tray. Brush them liberally with 8

some of the melted butter then arrange 2 more sheets on top. Brush with more butter and top with the last 2 sheets. 3. Spoon the apple mixture along one long pastry edge, leaving a 3cm border. Sprinkle over another 3 tbsp of Demerara sugar. Fold in the two short ends of the pastry then roll up loosely from one long side to enclose the filling, making sure the seal is underneath. Brush the pastry all over with any remaining melted butter and sprinkle over the rest of the Demerara sugar. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Check after 25 minutes and cover loosely with foil if the pastry begins to go too brown. Serve warm or cold dusted with icing sugar. TIP:

Adding breadcrumbs to the fruit mixture helps to soak up any juices and stop the pastry from becoming soggy. You can replace them with ground almonds, if liked.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog(s) of the Month Hi, we are Dipsy & Tanza, we are 3 & 4 year old Lurchers and we are looking for a home together as we get on so well, we wouldn’t cope being separated.

If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

We are sweet boys who LOVE to run! It is important that we have owners who will spend time training a re-call so we can get off lead for a good run! In the right home we will make a wonderful addition. We must live together but cannot live with cats and are looking for a home where any children are aged 10 years and over.

Put a Spring in your Step at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre

Put a spring in your step and bounce along to Aylesbury Waterside Theatre this March and April. There are plenty of shows to see through the Spring evenings as the countdown to Summer begins! Highlights include Denise Van Outen starring in her very own onewoman show Some Girl I Used To Know featuring a mix tape of hits from the 80s and 90s, Alfred Hitchcock’s gripping thriller Dial M For Murder and an inspirational war time production, Private Peaceful, written by Michael Morpurgo (the author of War Horse).

Spring-time Competition!

Bursting with dynamic dance routines and unforgettable songs, this is a must-see show to energise your way through Spring. More musical dynamite explodes on to the stage with Tonight’s The Night – The Rod Stewart Musical. Written by Ben Elton, the show celebrates the career of one of the best-selling recording artists of all time with spectacular staging, a world-class band and dazzling choreography. Don’t miss new major UK Tour (starting in Aylesbury), The Two Worlds of Charlie F. It’s Spring Time

Finally, that long wet Winter is history - and we gardeners can at last get on the soil. And now the Spring is here, why not plant some herbaceous perennials? The beauty of perennials is they are just that - perennial. Despite what the weather throws at them, they are tough enough to resist, even if during the winter months it seems they have died off. Indeed, all visible signs of the plants may have disappeared, but under the earth, life continues! Once the weather improves and the soil warms up - your plants will peek back up and prepare to thrive. Perennials are the staple of every garden border, and with a bit of planning and imagination it’s fairly straightforward to create colour and interest throughout the year. Early flowering plants such as Doronicum, Aquilegia and Pulsatilla will burst into colour in March, whilst Asters, Japanese Anenomes and Penstemon can go on and on right into November. Taller varieties such as Hollyhock, Foxglove and Delphiniums can grow up to six feet high, so do make sure these traditional cottage garden favourites go at the 32

back of the bed. Hardy Geraniums are always worth a place in a border - they thrive in almost any position and will reward you with colour throughout the summer. A few of my personal favourites are Verbena Bonariensis, a tall elegant plant with stunning violet flowers, Campanula Telham Beauty, grows to around five feet high and produces beautiful light blue bell shaped flowers and Geranium Rozanne, rightly voted Plant of the centenary by the RHS in 2013, this really is a winner, lots of superb violet blue flowers from early June right through to October. The great thing with perennials is you don’t have to spend a fortune to stock your garden. We have a huge range in small one litre pots, and although they are not the biggest specimens, plant them in Spring and just wait a few weeks, you’ll soon see how quickly they grow. There is absolutely no need

to spend up to £10 on a large 3 or 4 litre plant. Instead of paying that for just one plant, buy 4 smaller varieties and watch them thrive. If you are planting a new bed for the first time, do spend a bit of time preparing the soil. Give the bed a good digging over, and add some substance to it - something like organic Farmyard Manure is perfect. Give the bed a dressing of fish, blood and bone or chicken pellets, then plant away. If you’d like some advice on what to plant and where, do pop in and ask. We’re all enthusiastic perennial growers here, and more than happy to steer you towards the right plants for your garden. See you soon, Happy Gardening, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell

and all at Askett Nurseries.

Healthy Heart - Healthy You

You are never too young - or too old - to take care of your heart. Lack of exercise, poor diet, smoking… these lifestyle choices can all take their toll on your heart over the years. Making good choices now will give you benefits for the rest of your life. The food you eat can decrease your risk of heart disease. It will also help to reduce weight and the possibility of developing high blood pressure or diabetes. Try to eat a variety of foods with plenty of fruit and vegetables and include whole grains, seeds and nuts. Legumes and pulses are a great source of protein

and they are also low in fat. Beans and lentils are also a useful source of iron for vegetarians. The heart is a muscle that pumps blood around the body and, like all muscles, it needs exercise and activity. Exercise improves the circulation and helps the heart work more efficiently. This in turn, helps to protect against heart disease. Walking is an effective exercise for a healthy heart. It should be fast enough to make you a little breathless but not so fast you can’t hold a conversation. Build up slowly if you have not exercised for a while and do something you enjoy.

Go Wild With Rowlandscapes’ Instant Meadows

Rolls of turf similar to those used in conventional lawns come ready-seeded with a variety of native wildflowers for instant meadow spaces - large or small. Once laid, growth only needs to be cut back once a year.

Rowlandscapes, landscape gardeners based in Chinnor, has launched an exciting new service: the installation of instant meadows using Wildflower Turf™

The product was used in the opening ceremony and Olympic park for London 2012 and is rapidly gaining public recognition for its stunning aesthetic and ecological impact. Rowlandscapes became an accredited installer of the turf after using it in a number of

gardens locally to great effect last year. “I’m really pleased to be able to offer something to my customers that is low maintenance and yet has high visual impact in a variety of spaces,” says Rowland Lacey company owner. “It supports bees and butterflies and turns any area into a wildlife haven; helping with natural pest control and carbon absorption.” Wildflower meadows can be incorporated into garden schemes using the Rowlandscapes landscaping service.

Famous People of the Chilterns: JOHN HAMPDEN 1594 - 1643

John Hampden is one of this area’s most famous historical figures, a rebel who stood up for his beliefs and played a key role on the Parliamentary side in the Civil War.

- Tina Supplied by Natural England

Stallard

Statues of John Hampden in Aylesbury’s Market Square, and the central lobby of the House of Commons, commemorate this controversial man whom his contemporaries called ‘The Patriot’. First cousin to Oliver Cromwell, John Hampden was descended from an ancient Buckinghamshire family who owned Hampden House, in Great Hampden in Buckinghamshire. He went to Lord Williams’s School in Thame and served as MP for various seats including Wendover and Buckinghamshire. His first wife was Elizabeth Symeon of Pyrton, near Watlington, with whom he had nine children. Noted for his “flowing courtesy to all men”, he was a skilled and clever debater in Parliament and had a special aptitude for committee work.

ument Hampden Ship Money mon

He became a powerful influence in the struggle between Charles I and Parliament that culminated in the Civil War. In 1637 Hampden refused to pay the 20 shillings Ship Money on his Stoke Mandeville property - a tax which would assist the king in bypassing Parliament. He was made a test case and, although judgement went against him, he became a popular hero. In 1641 Parliament passed the Grand 44

Remonstrance of grievances against the king, put together by a number of people including John Hampden John Hampden. Hampden was accused of High Treason but eluded capture. 6,000 Buckinghamshire men walked to London in his support, with copies of the Remonstrance in their hats. On the outbreak of war, Hampden formed his own regiment and led them in battle. His eldest son was killed in a skirmish at Chenies Manor and he himself was wounded at the Battle of Chalgrove Field, near Watlington, when his troops were ambushed by Prince Rupert’s Royalist cavalry. He was carried to Thame where he survived six days and died on 24th June 1643. Grieving colleagues carried his body through the night for burial in the church of St Mary Magdalen, next to Hampden House in Great Hampden. Today, a monument to John Hampden in St Mary Magdalen Church commemorates the life of this man of great integrity. Nearby, a Ship Money Memorial is located on Honor End Lane, north of Prestwood (postcode HP16 9QZ). Hampden House is not open to the public but can be seen from the waymarked Chiltern Way circular walk nearby. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
