Editors’ Letter Welcome to the May/ June issue of Chiltern View (Risborough Area) magazine. We have been extremely busy here at Chiltern View magazines with all 3 magazines increasing their page count with lots of local events and interesting editorial to fit in plus the demand for advertising space. We do try and keep the balance right and hope that there is something in there for everyone. We have a press release about the Risborough Festival coming up in July (page 22), another article from Emily Hyde (our favourite work experience student) (page 18), an update on the Chinnor Windmill (page 30), Risborough Rewards (page 46) plus Aylesbury Theatre, Askett Nurseries and much more.

We also have a packed 5 pages of community clubs and events so worth a look for something you might be interested in. We are now proud members of the Risborough Rewards scheme and hope to feature an article in each issue to keep you up to date with more local community news. We do hope you like our beautiful front cover of this kingfisher taken by local photographer Gareth Hendley (page 51). The photo was taken at Gallows Bridge bird reserve which Gareth has been visiting on and off for about seven years but they can be found in a number of places locally, if you’re lucky. It is only this last year that he has been privileged enough to actually see one perch within photographic range and what a result!

Amy Johnson Risboroughs Forgotten Pilot

miles. In 1931, paired with Jack, they completed a record flight of 1,760 miles from London to Moscow in just 21 hours, then continued on to set a second record time for flying from Britain to Tokyo.

Amy Johnson was born in 1903 in Kingston upon Hull, where she attended the University of Sheffield. She left with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in economics and became the secretary of a local solicitor. At the age of 26, she was introduced to flying by a friend as a new hobby. Within a year she had obtained a Pilots ‘A’ licence and become the first British woman to earn a Ground Engineers ‘C’ licence. With funds from her father and Lord Wakefield, a close family friend, Amy was able to purchase a second-hand De Havilland DH.60 Gipsy Moth, whom she named “Jason” after her fathers’ business trade mark. Over her lifetime, Amy achieved a great amount, both as a solo pilot and with her flying partners - Jack Humphreys and her husband Jim Mollison, who proposed to her just eight hours after meeting in 1932. In 1930 she became the first female to fly solo from England to Australia, taking 19 days to travel 11,000 18

A year after marrying Mollison, the two flew from Wales to the States, although both were injured after their aircraft crash landed in Connecticut. Not deterred by this, in 1934 the pair flew from Britain to India in record time as part of the Australia MacRobertson Air Race, although they later had to resign from the race due to engine failure in Allahabad. 1938 brought a year of disasters for Amy, including overturning her glider whilst landing after a display in the Walsall Aerodrome, England, and divorcing her husband after only six years together. During World War II, Amy joined the Air Transport Auxiliary where she was tasked with transporting RAF aircrafts around England rising to the role of First Officer by 1941.

was too strong and they both perished. Her body was never recovered. Amy was 38. A memorial service was held on 14th January for Amy and Lt Fletcher was awarded the Albert Medal in May of the same year. Amy’s contributions to the aviation sector helped future female pilots to gain worldwide recognition for their dedication and achievements. Amy Johnson led an amazing life and left behind a great legacy, setting 8 Aviation records and forging a successful career in the war. She was also awarded a CBE and the Harmon Trophy. A collection of mementos and souvenirs are still able to be viewed in Sewerby Hall, East Riding. Not to be forgotten in Princes Risborough, a plaque was erected on her home here at the Old Vicarage behind St Marys Church, to commemorate her achievements.

On the 5th January 1941 while flying an Airspeed Oxford from Blackpool to RAF Kidlington, Amy was sent off course due to adverse weather conditions. She reportedly ran out of fuel and bailed out of her plane over the Thames Estuary. The crew of the nearby HMS Haslemere saw her parachute land in the sea and Lt Walter Fletcher dived in to save her. Sadly the tide

Princes Risborough Annual Town Festival 5th to 12th July 2014

It is Festival time again in Risborough and plans are well underway for another week of fun and entertainment! This year’s theme is children’s book characters, which will be reflected across many events throughout the town The week long activities start on Saturday 5th July with the popular Children’s Fancy Dress Parade through the High Street and Market Square to Wades Park led by The Chiltern Hills Brass Band. Following the fancy dress judging and prize giving we have an afternoon of children’s entertainment including Circus Training, Martial Arts and Cheerleader displays, the infamous Tug of War, children’s races, toddler music group and puppets, kids games and stories, plus an array of stalls, including a bar and food.

Artists such as Shirley Bassey, Matt Monro, Tom Jones, Nancy Sinatra and Tina Turner originally recorded the songs and Dawn pays a special tribute to each of these legends during a breath-taking night with the great British Spy. If that was not enough hot food and a bar will be available – How do you like your Martini?

On Saturday evening the mood changes to something for the adults at the Community Centre – a James Bond themed evening “Casino Royale”, Ever fancied being James Bond at the Casino? Well now is your chance! Play for fun at Blackjack and Roulette but with a chance of winning cash prizes for the evening’s best gamblers.

Tickets only £10 each which includes entrance and free casino money.

To entertain you the wonderful talents of Miss Dawn Alacey will perform her unique show “A License to Thrill” showcasing classic songs such as ‘Goldfinger’, ‘A View to a Kill’, ‘Live and Let Die’ and ‘ Diamonds are Forever’. These songs were written for the sensational Ian Flemming Movies and will really add to the evening’s fun. Throughout the performance Dawn will amaze you with her remarkable three octave vocal range to fully capture the original mood of each song, while adding her own personal warmth, fun and endless energy.

Throughout the Festival Week many clubs, societies and local businesses host will an array of open evenings, exhibitions, walks, concerts, factory tours, and a barn dance.

Sunday 6th July sees the return of the popular 10k Run starting from the Market Square at 9.30am. A Children’s Chocolate Hunt will be held later on the same day for all children accompanied by an adult. This will start at 1pm at Whiteleaf Cross.

Saturday 12th July sees the culmination of the Festival with an Annual Street Fair from 1pm. An array of stalls, food, and a bar will line the High Street supported by live music from the Market Square. Stage Acts include Rattlesnake and the Tiny Tina Turner Rock and Blues Band – a high energy 5 piece band playing all the popular Tina Turner songs as well as a few favourites along the way.

Climbing in to Summer

If you’re one of those gardeners who want to maximise the potential of a smaller garden, and perhaps improve a tired looking fence or wall, do think about incorporating climbers into your planting scheme. Vertical surfaces are often ignored, however, with a little planning and research, it is quite possible to achieve colour throughout the year. As far as I am concerned, the number one climber is Clematis. This is a classic, easy to grow climber and will reward you with a fantastic burst of colour. To get the best from your Clematis, you must prune. Regular pruning will encourage new strong growth, which in turn will give you more and more colour. If left to its own devices, a Clematis will grow into a tangled, untidy mess and the base will become bare and barren. But it’s not that simple! Clematis are split into three separate pruning groups. Group 1 are the varieties that flower early in the year. These Clematis flower on growth produced the previous year, once they have completed their flowering contribution 28

to your garden they should be trimmed and tidied up. Group 2 are the large flowered cultivars that flower in early Summer. Again, they flower on the previous year’s growth - so if you give them a light trim once they have flowered, there is every chance they will flower again later in the Summer. Group 3 are the varieties that flower in late Summer/early Autumn. To ensure you get great colour, cut these back hard in early Spring. They flower on this year’s growth, so be bold and cut them back to around a foot high. One of the most popular varieties of Clematis is the Montana family, and ironically enough, after all the previous information regarding pruning, the Montanas don’t particularly require it. Montana are a prolific, vigorous variety that produce lot of white to dark pink smaller flowers

early in the year. They are a very good choice if you need to cover a dead tree, indeed any ugly looking area. If you do need to prune a Montana, do it once they have finished flowering - around early May. There really is a Clematis for everyone, from bell shaped flowering Alpina varieties to the plate sized flowers of the more stunning cultivars such as Jackmanii or Henryi. There is an evergreen variety too - the ever popular Armandii which has shiny evergreen leaves and produces white/ appleblossom fragrant flowers early in the season. Happy Gardening, See you soon, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell

and all at Askett Nurseries.

Recipe of the Month

Moroccan Stuffed Loin Of Pork Serves 6 This roast pork is full of flavour and the spiced fruit and nut rice stuffing makes a change from the usual sage and onion. For really crispy crackling, the pork rind needs to be finely scored right through to the layer of fat underneath– ask your butcher to do this for you. Ingredients:

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 tsp each ground coriander and ground cumin • 40g ready-to-eat dried apricots, finely chopped • 25g pine nuts • 25g sultanas • 100g cold cooked basmati rice • 1 tbsp beaten egg • 1.5kg joint boned and rolled loin of pork with skin scored • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method:

1. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in half the ground coriander and cumin and cook for 1 minute. Add the apricots, pine nuts, sultanas and cook rice and fry for 2-3 minutes until piping hot. Leave to cool completely then season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 38

2. Preheat the oven to 220C/ fan 200C/gas mark 7. Unroll the pork loin and spoon the cold stuffing down the centre. Re-roll the pork to enclose the filling and secure tightly with fine string at intervals. 3. Mix together the rest of the ground coriander and cumin and rub into the scored skin. Weigh the stuffed joint then place it in a roasting tin. 4. Roast for 30 minutes then reduce the oven temperature to 190C/fan 170C/ gas mark 5 and roast for a further 35 minutes per 450g. Cover loosely with foil towards the end of the cooking time if the cracking starts to overcook. 5. Remove from the oven and cover with foil. Leave in a warm place for 20-30 minutes to allow the meat to rest before carving. TIP: To make a delicious gravy, pour off any excess fat from the roasting tin just leaving a little fat and the meat juices in the base. Heat the pan juices on the hob until sizzling. Stir in 1 tbsp flour and cook for 1 minute then gradually stir in 400ml apple juice or cider and 2 tsp Dijon mustard, scraping up any sediment from the base of the roasting tin. Bring to the boil then simmer, stirring all the time, until reduced and thickened. Season to taste then pour into a warmed jug or gravy boat.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog(s) of the Month Hi, my name is Nelson, I am a 3 year old large crossbreed. I am here through no fault of my own and I find kennel life difficult so would love a new home to call my own. I used to live with another dog, so pending introductions I may be happy to live with another. I would like owners who have had large,

strong breeds before as I would love to have some further training. I cannot live with cats and would like a home where any children are aged 14 years and over. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm. Many thanks, Lisa.

Risborough Rewards enables Risborough 1st Responders to exceed their funding target! Risborough Rewards a Loyalty Card scheme set up to benefit the community as a whole and to encourage people to shop locally and support the High Street, has chosen Risborough 1st Responders as the first beneficiary of the “Community Pot”, the proceeds of card sales ploughed back into the community. Risborough 1st Responders (R1R) are a team of local ambulance trained volunteers who attend incidents of cardiac arrest, whilst professionals from South Central Ambulance Service are on their way. The survivability of a patient in cardiac arrest reduces by between 10 to 20% per minute before the provision of Basic Life Support, so early intervention increases the chance of a patient surviving a cardiac arrest. Geoff Clarke from R1R said “Although part of the ‘999’ service R1R does not receive tax payer funding , therefore we are delighted to receive the £200 donation from Risborough Rewards which takes us a little over our set-up funding target for three responder kits. R1R 46

can now focus more of recruiting, sustainability for the long-term and capability enhancement to meet the ever increasing ‘999’ demand from the Risboroughs and close by.” A representative from Risborough Rewards stated “We are thrilled to be able to help such an important local service and hope to help with many more community projects in the future.” For more details on R1R Recruiting and donating email gclark552@btinternet.com or alternatively visit www.risborough.org/ community/risborough-1st-responders/ For more details on the Risborough Rewards Loyalty Card scheme go to www.risboroughrewards.co.uk

Famous People of the Chilterns: Charles de Gaulle 1890 - 1970

Charles de Gaulle was one of France’s most powerful presidents of the 20th century. During the Second World War he had to flee France and found refuge in the Chilterns. Charles de Gaulle began his career as a professional officer in the French army, and distinguished himself in the First World War. In 1940, when France surrendered to Germany during WW2, de Gaulle and other French officers escaped to England. He arrived with barely a hundred French francs, thrust into his hand by a colleague as he boarded his plane.

Supplied by Adrian Scottow

On his arrival, Winston Churchill famously invited him to broadcast to the French people on the BBC, calling for resistance against Nazi occupation. Armed with an unflinching belief in his country and his own destiny (he frequently referred to himself in the third person) de Gaulle set about forming the Free French movement, claiming

Immediately after the war he presided over the interim French Government and was president of France from 1959-69. His wartime Chilterns neighbours could have had no idea that the man in their midst was destined to become the most influential ruler of France in its modern history. They would be even less likely to guess that he is the only one-time Chilterns resident to have an international airport named after him! The Ashridge Estate is owned by the National Trust now and is a great place to visit for a walk, bike ride or picnic with lots of woodland trails and viewpoints.

Bluebells Ashridge

sovereignty over France. For this he was accused of treason and given a death sentence by the official Vichy-France government. In 1941 de Gaulle and his family moved into Rodinghead, a house in the Ashridge Estate area near Berkhamsted. The beautiful surroundings of the Chilterns countryside 50

would have provided some tranquillity from the rigours of being a wartime leader in exile. As Charles de Gaulle a devout Catholic, the leader of the Free French worshipped regularly at Berkhamsted’s Roman Catholic church in Park View Road, now no longer a church. On Remembrance Sunday in November 1941, de Gaulle was persuaded to take the salute at the march-past of the local Home Guard in the nearby village of Potten End, an unlikely event recorded in photographs.

This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
