Editors’ Letter Welcome to the July/ August issue of Chiltern View (Risborough Area) magazine.
in to making this an enjoyable annual, family event for the town. Lots of shops and local businesses have helped by getting involved too, so it will be well worth popping down.
We are very pleased to have been asked to produce the Risborough Town Festival programme again this year. You should all have received one with the magazines but if not, then they will be giving them out in the town or be available to pick up in local businesses, doctors, pubs, station, Information Centre or Library.
There are lots of other dates for your diary in the magazine. The Towersey Festival, the Blitz Ball (Chinnor Village Centre) and many others from our community pages. Articles this issue include Henry VIII, Aston Rowant Discovery Trail and a big thanks to the Chilterns Gateway Centre for sending across details of the beautiful walks and events they have coming up there.
Please go along and support the town. There are so many things happening; something to suit everyone and the Festival committee has put a huge amount of effort
Until the next time
Fingers crossed for some lovely, warm and sunny weather for us all to enjoy this summer.

Drop-off for passengers is in the High Street. Most journeys cost only £1.50 or 50p for children and most concessionary passes are accepted. Anyone can use our bus, young and old, and a recent passenger survey gave us a 100% satisfaction rating. Our trained volunteer drivers are well thought of: “these drivers are the most helpful I have been served by for 44 years” said a passenger recently.
Over 20,000 passengers a year now use our “little green bus” that runs daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services around Princes Risborough and to outlying villages.
We make the bus available for use by non-profit making organisations and groups when not on scheduled service and we run outings each month to places of interest.

Change the way you see your feet…
As the weather gets warmer we all start to think about getting our feet out of those winter shoes and in to summer sandals. Many of us like to go barefoot or put on less restrictive footwear and give our feet an airing. That is unless you have a fungal nail infection which can be unsightly and embarrassing. Fungal nail infections are more than simply a cosmetic problem. It can cause pain and significant problems when wearing shoes. Furthermore, it is a risk factor for the development of bacterial cellulitis of the lower legs, particularly in patients with diabetes or a suppressed immunity. Fungal nails are extremely common. In the UK 1.2 million people have a fungal nail infection and it is more prevalent in the over 70’s. Treatment is difficult and recurrence is common. Topical treatments need to be applied daily for prolonged periods and are expensive. Oral tablets have the risk of side effects.
A recent exciting development now being offered by The Laser Nail Centre at The Luxton Clinic, is the Cold Laser. The unique dual diode approach of the laser effectively targets and kills the fungal infection and also fortifies the body’s natural defence mechanisms to ensure healthy nail growth. Clinical studies have proven the Cold Laser to be:• Safe and effective for fungal nail infections • No side effects or adverse reactions • Only 4 painless treatment • 97% of patients demonstrated new growth of healthy nail Please phone 01844 352200 for further information and Change the Way You See Your Feet… today.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog(s) of the Month Hi, my name is Kat, I am a 7 year old American Bull Dog type. I am a shy girl and I find kennel life difficult so would love a new home to call my own. I am very gentle despite my size and I already know some tricks such as sit, paw, other paw, high 5 and down. I used to live with male dogs so subject to a meet I may be able to live with a calm male.
24
I am currently on a diet so my new owners will have to help me lose the extra weight I am currently carrying. I would like a quiet, calm home without cats (as I like to chase them!) and where any children are aged 14 years and over. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

Recipe of the Month
Mussel & Potato Chowder Serves 4, ready in 45 minutes
This filling meal-in-a-bowl makes a lovely weekend supper that’s ready in less than an hour. Most supermarket fresh fish counters sell bags of fresh mussels all year round, but if they are unavailable you can use 2 x 500g packs of mussels in white wine sauce and just reduce the fish stock to 300ml and omit the white wine. Ingredients:
• 1kg fresh mussels • 1 tbsp olive oil • 15g butter • 4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 100ml white wine • 2 baking potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks • 350ml fish stock made with ½ stock cube • 200ml crème fraiche • 4 tbsp fresh chopped flat leaf parsley • Warm ciabatta or sour dough bread, to serve Method:
1. First clean the mussels. Scrub under cold running water and discard any that are cracked or do not close when lightly tapped. Pull away the ‘beards’ from the sides of the shells. Place in a bowl and set aside. 2. Heat the oil and butter in a large deep saucepan or flameproof casserole. 28
Add the shallots and fry gently for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes then pour in the wine and cook for a further minute 3. Add the potatoes and stir well. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the crème fraiche and half the chopped parsley and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Add the cleaned mussels to the pan and cover and cook for 3-4 minutes until the mussels have opened – discard any that remain closed. 5. Ladle the chowder into warmed bowls and garnish with the rest of the parsley and more ground black pepper. Serve with warm ciabatta or sour dough bread. TIP: For a spicy Thai-style chowder, add 1 deseeded and chopped red chilli to the fried shallots and 1 bruised stalk of lemon grass to the simmering liquid. Replace the crème fraiche with 150ml coconut milk and the chopped parsley with coriander. Serve with steamed jasmine rice.

The world’s biggest tribute band and the world’s oldest independent record label will be among those helping Towersey Festival celebrate its 50th birthday this August. Debuting way back in 1965 – the year that also gave us Thunderbirds, 007’s Thunderball and Julie Andrews in The Sound Of Music Towersey has since established itself as one of the UK’s most loved annual music festivals. Running over five days, 2014’s festival is officially opened by The Bootleg Beatles on Thursday 21 August, who’ll be performing hits from across the Fab Four’s career. Famed for their attention to detail, the ‘Fake Fabs’ have been dressed by The Beatles’ own tailor, while right-handed ‘Fake Paul’ even taught himself to play bass guitar left-handed, to mimic Paul McCartney. They’ll be followed over the long August Bank Holiday weekend by performances from legendary folk/rock guitarist Richard Thompson, Mercury Prize nominee Seth Lakeman, the multi-BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winning Lau, and a one-off, guest-star filled concert led by Eliza Carthy to mark the 75th anniversary of seminal independent record label, Topic Records. Other acts set to appear at the festival include Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy, Michael McGoldrick, John McCusker, Georgia Ruth, Dick Gaughan, John Smith, Nancy Kerr and James Fagan and The Urban Folk Quartet.
36
But the main-stage music is just part of Towersey’s appeal, as elsewhere the festival hosts music, dance and craft workshops, early morning yoga, family film screenings, storytelling, and much more. The ever popular Showground offers a taster of what the full festival has to offer with circus skills workshops, street theatre performances, roaming artists, stories, dancers from around the world, and family-friendly fun. There’s also a rolling programme of top bands and musicians performing on the Showground Bar Stage courtesy of leading local promoters The First Thursday Music Club, Musically Monstrous, Charlbury Riverside Festival and Crash Records. If it’s retail you want, check out the stalls, selling crafts, instruments, clothes and gifts, as well as a mouth-watering array of food and drink, from noodles and nachos to chips and cakes, from premium coffees to artisan beers and ciders. Showground-only tickets cost just £8 (adult), £3 (60+, conc, 5-17yrs), with under 5s free. Tickets for the full five-day festival start from £135 (adult), £55 (youth), with under 5s free. Camping tickets also available. Festival day tickets (Fri-Mon) £10-£40. Car parking free. For further information and to book tickets, call 023 8071 1818 or see: www.towerseyfestival.com Special Offer: If you live in Thame or Towersey, adult Resident Season Tickets are available for the entire festival for just £70. That’s nearly half-price! These tickets are available only by calling 01629 827016.

Geraniums
One of the most popular perennials we stock is the Hardy Geranium, or Cranesbill. There can be quite a bit of confusion regarding the name ‘Geranium’. To many gardeners a Geranium is the tender upright or trailing plant that can be planted out in May, once the threat of frost has passed . Infact, these plants are officially Pelargomiums, and are treated by the vast majority as annual plants, although if they are brought in to a greenhouse or conservatory before the weather turns in the Autumn, they can be kept for many years . The Hardy Geranium is a family of plants which are hardy, reliable and will thrive in any garden . All varieties will provide you with a mass of small ( around 2cm ) flowers - white or shades of pink and blue - that bees and butterflies find irresistible . There’s bound to be a Geranium for you, as they range from just 5cm high to close to 2 metres tall, the smaller lower varieties are ideal for the edge of a rockery or wall as they will cascade down. Geraniums , once they have flowered should be chopped back to get rid of the untidy old foliage, and to get the 38
very best of them long term should be divided every three or so years, do this just as the plant starts to put on new growth in the Spring . One of the most popular varieties is Rozanne, which will reward you with a mass of beautiful large violet blue flowers that will last most of the Summer. Rozanne was quite rightly voted ‘Plant of the Century’ by the RHS. Some of our other favourites are Blue Sunrise, a recently new introduction that gold leaves and eye catching blue flowers, Mrs Kendall Clark is a real winner, with soft
silver veined blue flowers. Wargrave Pink is a tough reliable variety with clear pink flowers, whilst if you’re looking for a white, you won’t go far wrong with Phaeum Album. We stock a large selection of Hardy Geraniums throughout the Summer, so if you do want advice on which is the one for you, do pop in and ask one of us for assistance. Happy Gardening, See you soon, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell
and all at Askett Nurseries.

Aston Rowant Discovery Trail
Walk in the Footsteps of Monarchs and Highwaymen Aston Rowant Discovery Trail – a walk through some stunning Oxfordshire countryside – will open officially at 10.30 a.m. on 22nd July 2014 at Aston Rowant Church. This circular walk starts at Aston Rowant Church and extends for just over 5 miles, visiting a host of attractions including the National Trust Juniper Bank, Aston Wood, the Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve, and Talking Trail. The Discovery Trail then returns along the Ridgeway – with the option to extend the walk to take in Lewknor, The Leathern Bottel and the Lambert Arms. The 11th century Aston Rowant church is situated on Church Lane – thought to be part of the London Weye, a route to Oxford used in the Middle Ages. The future Queen Elizabeth I passed this way in 1554 when she was released from the Tower of
40
London and banished to country confinement in Woodstock. Walking this route will allow everyone to steep themselves in history and really let their imagination run riot. Peter Hetherington, chairman of the Aston Rowant Parish Council Footpath & Amenities Group, commented “We are delighted to be launching the Discovery Trail, which will provide a walk amongst beautiful scenery, travelling in the footsteps of monarchs and highwaymen. It is fully marked with eight information boards enroute, each of which features a map showing a walker’s current location, as well as a QR code for smartphones. “We are fortunate to have receiving funding for this important project from a number of bodies including Grundon, the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment, Oxfordshire County Council and the Chilterns Conservation Board. We have also had a great deal of input from people who provided advice on history, flora and fauna as well as mapping experts and volunteers who gave practical help. We are certain that this Discovery Trail will be an important attraction for our area.” he concluded.

The Friends of Kimble Churches
The Friends of Kimble Churches is a registered charity which exists to protect two ancient churches in the Kimbles in Buckinghamshire. The churches, St Nicholas Church in Great Kimble and All Saints Church in Little Kimble, are historically significant. All Saints has some beautiful medieval wall paintings which the Friends helped to restore. Both churches are in regular use but the burden of caring and maintaining the fabric of these beautiful old churches is great. To help discharge this task a special charity, The Friends of Kimble Churches, was formed to raise money specifically for the maintenance, repair and enhancement of the fabric of the two churches. The Friends of Kimble Churches is holding a talk on The Life and Times of John Hampden. It will be given by the Earl of
Buckinghamshire, who is a descendant, on Saturday 27th September at St Nicholas Church. The minimum donation per ticket is ÂŁ10 and includes a glass of wine, although per ticket donations higher than this will be gratefully accepted. Tickets are available from The Friends of Kimble Churches on 01844 318796 or from Joan Griffith on 01844 342369. Tickets will also be available on the door on the evening. www.kimblechurchfriends.org.uk
Summer The time for garden wiring writes Roger Runswick of 50plus In a number of cases recently changing an old fuse box for a new consumer unit has led to problems being discovered. It's usually a result of old wiring causing the new sensitive and safer RCDs to trip out due to an underlying fault. Sometimes the problem is an incorrectly wired appliance or extension lead. A frequent culprit is damp in garden wiring and sometimes outside lighting. And if you are unfortunate enough to have Glis-Glis (a Chilterns speciality) or other rodents inhabiting your house you should ensure you have RCDs fitted as a matter of urgency as our little friends can and do snack on cables. Which form of outside power? For external electrical fittings I recommend thinking in terms of: (i) Installing solar or low voltage lighting. Solar is usually fine for temporary e.g. security lights or decorative lighting. LED lighting is now almost as good as mains and definitely better for your pocket. (ii) Low voltage for pond power, usually 12 volts. It’s safer and cheaper to install. (iii) Mains (240 volts) for power if you must and for lighting as a last resort. Avoid underground junction boxes and keep connections accessible for servicing.

Do you need to book a holiday from yourself? Cartoon by: Henck and the CBT Partnership in Hertfordshire.
Do you ever find that when you go on your summer holidays, the one thing that you can’t escape from is your racing thoughts? With our busy and stressful lives, even if we are lying on a beautiful beach, our minds can find it impossible to relax. Whether we are mentally running through ‘To do’ lists for when we get home, or worrying about work or life issues, there sometimes seems no way of escaping the constant stream of thoughts and worries racing through our minds. Break the stress cycle with Mindfulness Mindfulness is about not letting these unwanted thoughts control us, but focusing on the ‘now’ and through a set of simple yet powerful meditative practices, finding true peace and tranquility. Mindfulness helps you to break the stress cycle and rediscover your zest for life. Instead of worrying and living in the future or the past, you can stop and really appreciate the world around you. By helping you to develop your capacity to ‘live in the moment’, it helps you to relax and be more compassionate with yourself and others. By reducing your stress levels, it helps you to build confidence. As well as being life-enhancing, Mindfulness has been proven to help people to cope with a wide range of issues such as sleep problems, stress, CBT, depression, eating issues, coronary artery disease, chronic pain, psoriasis and anxiety. What you will learn during a mindfulness course is the following:
•
How to be more aware in the present moment rather than caught up in negative or anxious thoughts
•
How to step out of a constant ‘doing’ mode into simply ‘being‘.
•
To recognise your own responses to stressful situations and develop other ways of dealing with them
•
Simple meditation techniques that you can use anywhere which can transform your daily life
Mindfulness Chilterns runs regular Mindfulness days, Mindfulness taster evenings and eight-week Mindfulness courses, teaching all the techniques of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. So if you are looking for a restful and refreshing oasis of calm amidst the chaos, why not get in touch? Famous People of the Chilterns: heNrY VIII & eLIZABeTh I Henry VIII
Both of these famous Tudor monarchs often travelled through the English countryside, staying in the grand houses of noblemen and aristocrats, and they clearly loved to include the Chilterns in their courtly progress. Queen Elizabeth I came in great splendour to the village of Bradenham, near High Wycombe, in 1566, staying overnight at Hampden House at Great Hampden. The onward route saw the royal party emerging onto the ridge at Walter’s Ash, descending to Bradenham through the woodland glade which survives today. From here Her Majesty set forth to High Wycombe with a large party of gentlemen for protection against thieves infesting the ‘primeval forest’.
Chenies Manor and gardens
In contrast to its genteel image today, several hundred years ago the Chilterns countryside had a bad reputation, its dense woodlands believed to be the hangout of many a fugitive from the law and other similar n’er-do-wells. Before it became gentrified with large country estates created by the wealthy seeking respite from London, those who decided to travel through the area had to be prepared for possible attack from highwaymen lurking in the woods. The royals with their large retinues probably felt they had enough safety in numbers to risk it! Both Henry and Elizabeth were entertained at picturesque Chenies Manor near Amersham, then home to the Russell family, the Earls of Bedford. Perhaps they were careless guests as 52
Queen Elizabeth I
they seemed to leave a few possessions behind. The effects of the 2nd Earl included a crimson silk quilt owned by Henry VIII, valued at £36. In her turn, Elizabeth visited several times. An entry in a wardrobe book shows that in 1570, whilst sitting beneath an ancient oak which you can still see in the lovely manor gardens, she lost some tiny gold ‘aglet’ decorations from her gown. Always acquisitive, Henry VIII owned and visited a royal palace in the delightful Oxfordshire village of Ewelme. This passed to Elizabeth, who came here on several occasions. Other royal properties in the Chilterns also changed hands. Anne of Cleeves received the manor at Bisham Abbey in her divorce settlement and Mary Tudor imprisoned the Princess Elizabeth here. Henry gave Berkhamsted Castle in turn to his first three wives: Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour. Elizabeth later rented it to her Keeper of the Queen’s Jewels for the nominal payment of one red rose. The palace in Ewelme is no more but you can walk in the footsteps of Henry and Elizabeth at Chenies Manor House which is open to the public: www.cheniesmanorhouse.co.uk. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. We are very grateful to all our donors and hope that people will continue to give financial support so that the trustees can hopefully be in a position to purchase the buildings for the community by the end of this year.
