Editors’ Letter Welcome to the September/ October issue of Chiltern View Risborough area. Fingers crossed that, as you are reading this, the gorgeous summer weather that we have been having is continuing. Our offices are at the top of a building in Chinnor and it does get hot but we can get a lovely breeze with the windows open and we are lucky to have an air conditioning unit for when we are very hot, and possibly a little stressed, when deadlines are upon us! Now that the Risborough Festival and August bank holiday weekend in the
marquees in Chinnor are over for another year, the main event in the Risborough area is Kop Hill Climb. We were offered such a fun picture that we felt we must use it for the cover and we hope it makes you smile too. There is so much to see during these two days, from the cars with lots of history but beautifully kept and restored to modern vehicles which suit all age groups and try and tempt you. An all-round family day out and well worth a visit. We do hope that you are all enjoying reading our magazines and please let us know if you have any good ideas for content that you feel we might be missing. We appreciate all your feedback.
Until the next time

7 Easy Ways to Save Money on Your Heating Oil
With over 31,000 homes off the gas grid in Buckinghamshire, many families in our community use oil to heat their homes. If you’re on oil and looking to make a saving on your next order, check out our useful tips for smart, simple ways to cut down your costs! 1. Watch the weather Oil prices typically decline during spring and summer, when temperatures are high and demand is low. By toppingup your tank this summer, you can take advantage of these great prices and stay warm in winter for less. 2. Compare prices You might have a regular supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around, or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil.
6. Group buy Buying as a group is the best way to get a discount on your oil, but did you know that you can also do it online? Websites like BoilerJuice automatically group your delivery with others in your area, to help you qualify for group discounts every day of the week. 7. Spread the cost with a payment plan While payment schemes often mean an expensive contract with a specific supplier, signing up for a monthly payment plan with an impartial site gives you the ability to spread your oil costs, while guaranteeing you the best quote from a range of suppliers across the UK.
3. Buy in bulk Instead of topping-up your oil levels on a regular basis, fill it up in one go to cut down on delivery costs and get a great bulk-buy price. 4. Order early Set a regular reminder, mark it on your calendar or simply plan ahead of time to beat the rush, avoid costly emergency orders and take advantage of cheaper delivery options. 5. Add an additive An inexpensive way to upgrade your fuel, oil additives prevent tank sludge build-up, improve overall efficiency and save you money by reducing expensive maintenance costs, operating problems and boiler breakdowns. 16

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog(s) of the Month Hi, my name is Hannah, I’m a 10 year old small mixed breed. I came into the Rescue after my owner sadly passed away. I am deaf and have poor eyesight but that doesn’t stop me enjoying life & I love a run in the enclosed exercise areas. I am very affectionate once I know you & I love a fuss. I still have the odd mad moment – play bowing and skittish running when I feel like it.
If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.
My new owners should have experience of deaf and/or blind dogs. I cannot live with dogs or cats and would like a home where any children are aged 14 years and over.

Famous People of the Chilterns: JEROME K JEROME
The timeless medieval village of Ewelme, near Wallingford, is a fitting resting place for the author Jerome K Jerome, who wrote memorably about the charms of Old England. His best-known work is Three Men in a Boat - a comedy novel about a boating holiday on the Thames taken by Jerome and two friends, plus a dog called Montmorency. In the story they row along the river from London to Oxford, and so pass many miles of Chilterns scenery and landmarks. Remarkably, all the pubs and inns mentioned in the book are still open today, including the George and Dragon at Wargrave, the Swan at Pangbourne and the Bull at Streatley.
Ewelme Supplied by John Morris
In 2005 the comedians Griff Rhys Jones, Dara O’Briain and Rory McGrath re-created the journey for a TV programme. Inspired by his honeymoon on the Thames, Three Men in Boat was published in 1889, bringing instant fame and fortune for Jerome and cementing his love of the river. The Chilterns landscape must also have made an impression because it appears, from letters, that he lived in turn at Monks Corner, near Marlow, then at Wood End House in Marlow, Ridge End in Marlow Common and, finally, at a farmhouse near Ewelme. All are still private houses. Jerome Klapka - brother of Paulina Deodata, Blandina Dominica and Milton Melancthon 22
Jerome - may have inherited his sense of humour from his parents, but little else. Jerome K Jerome Brought up in poverty in London’s East End, he worked variously as a clerk, a hack journalist, schoolmaster and an actor (playing “every role in Hamlet except Ophelia”). His first humorous book appeared in 1885 and he went on to become a prolific writer and editor of The Idler and other magazines. Jerome K Jerome died in 1927 and his ashes were buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church in Ewelme. The grave is marked with a large headstone. The church houses the elaborate tomb of Alice, Duchess of Suffolk, Geoffrey Chaucer’s granddaughter. A covered walkway leads to the cloistered 15th century almshouses, adjacent to the 15th century village school which still operates in its original building. While in Ewelme it is also well worth visiting the pretty watercress beds, restored by the Chiltern Society, and the adjacent nature reserve (www.ewelmewatercressbeds.org). This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Planting Trees
We’re now approaching the Autumn, with the soil still warm and the threat/ promise of the inevitable rain, this is the traditional time for planting trees. If you own a garden the size of a postage stamp, or you enjoy a large plot the size of a couple of football pitches, there is, without doubt a tree for you. By planting a tree, you’re leaving your own signature on the garden. All things being equal, that tree you plant today should be alive and well in a century’s time, being enjoyed by gardeners who are yet to pop from their pods. A lot of gardeners with relatively little space for a tree can be put off from planting, as they are concerned 26
that their choice will grow quickly and prove to be a long term problem. Regular pruning prevents a tree from romping off into the clouds, and with a bit of imagination it can become far more than just a problem solver. With a bit of thought and a dash of artistic panache, trees can be pleached, trimmed into archways or kept neat and regimented in a formal shape. Pruning also helps with the overall health of the tree by removing poor quality material such as weak or diseased wood. By ridding the otherwise healthy tree of such branches and stems on an annual basis you will find it will continue to thrive. The Autumn is also the time to feed trees. A good dressing
of bonemeal this time of year will ensure your tree will grow well in the Spring, and a mulch with organic compost will prevent weeds from establishing around the base and protect the root system from any hard frosts. We stock a very good range of trees during the Autumn, and if we don’t have what you are looking for in stock, we should be able to source your tree from one of the nurserymen we use. And don’t forget, we offer a free local delivery service on all trees! See you soon, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell
and all at Askett Nurseries.

Kop Hill Climb
The historic Kop Hill Climb will take place on 20th and 21st September this year. The revival of the original event, which takes place annually in Princes Risborough, is now in its sixth year. During that time it has grown into an internationally recognised weekend for enthusiasts and families alike, and attendance figures have climbed steadily each year, topping 15,000 in 2013. Which is very good news for local charities, who benefitted last year from £55,000 in donations. 2013 saw Kop Hill Climb Ltd manage the event as agents for Buckinghamshire Community Foundation, an
established charity, who distribute the funds. The event returns this year with over 400 historic cars and motorcycles taking on the famous hill, and many more displaying in the Paddock. Vehicles range in age from the early 1900’s to modern day exotics, so whatever your preference there will be something for all. This is not just a static display, but also a recreation of Kop Hill’s glorious past. Both days will have morning and afternoon sessions where you can see the cars and motorcycles storming the hill. Moving history right before your eyes, especially from one of the Grandstands, which gives a unique vantage point. A Best of British display will feature as its centrepiece a 1924 GP Sunbeam that is still the holder of the Kop Hill Climb record established in 1925, together with not one but three ERA’s (English Racing Automobiles) from the 1930’s. Only 24 were produced. And for those who like something more up to date Kop Hill Climb is excited to announce the appearance
30
at the event of a McLaren P1, the hybrid hypercar that caused Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson to exclaim it “takes our perception of speed to a new level”. Demonstrating the very latest in hybrid power with its 727bhp twin-turbo V8, 176bhp electric motor, the McLaren P1 will be the most powerful car participating, befitting its name, meaning ‘first place’ or ‘position one’. Kop Hill is one of the oldest Hill Climb venues in England. The first recorded races were in 1910. It became a major event on the motorsports car and motorcycle calendar and many famous drivers and riders of the time, including Malcolm Campbell, Raymond Mays, Henry Segrave and Count Zborowski raced up the hill. The last event was in 1925, when as a result of an accident to a spectator, the RAC banned all motorsport on public roads. Today Kop Hill is a public road, and is closed to traffic during the event. Back by popular demand are Haurel and Lardy, recreating the legendary double act.

Enter if you dare the Wall of Death. A children’s area, trade village and food and drink court all ensure there is something for everyone to see. Kop Hill ale will be back this year, after a runaway success since its launch in 2012. Other family fun and entertainment includes the Red Arrows simulator ride, the Racing Bug race track game and a vintage steam carousel and climbing wall. The Soapbox Challenge is open to competitors aged
10 to 17 to design, construct and compete in their own gravity-powered soapbox cart. Entrants will compete as teams of up to 6 members, and the soapboxes will be evaluated on their engineering and design just as much as their performance.
including The Anderson Sisters close harmony trio, Collective Calm jazz band and Andy Davidson with his unique style of entertaining the crowds.
If you would like to be part of the Soapbox Challenge this year go to the website www.kophillclimb.org.uk for full details and registration.
The objective of the Kop Hill Climb revival is to raise money for local charities. All the organising team and helpers are volunteers. Over ÂŁ190,000 has been raised since the revival started in 2009.
The Paddock stage will host a programme of entertainers

Recipe of the Month
Dutch Apple Pie Serves 8
The buttery pastry for this deep dish pie is made with a mix of selfraising and plain flours which gives it a soft and cake-like texture. If you prefer a crisper pastry use all plain flour. Choose crisp sweet dessert apples such as Cox’s Orange Pippins or Discovery. INGREDIENTS:
• • • • • • • • • • • •
200g plain flour 150g self raising flour 175 g unsalted butter, diced 150g caster sugar plus 1 tbsp for sprinkling 2 medium eggs, beaten 400g dessert apples, peeled, cored and sliced 75g raisins 75g light soft brown sugar 1 tbsp corn flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tbsp milk Whipped cream, to serve
TIP: Replace the apples with sliced pears or a mixture of summer berries such as blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. METHOD:
1. To make the pastry, sift the plain and self-raising flours into a large bowl and add the diced butter. 38
Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and beaten eggs and mix to a soft dough. Knead very lightly until smooth then wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 1 hour. 2. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to pre-heat. 3. Roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line the base of a 23 cm round loose-based fluted flan tin. 4. Toss the apple slices in a bowl with the raisins, brown sugar, cornflour and cinnamon then layer in the pastry case, pressing down gently. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into strips. Arrange in a lattice pattern over the apples. Dab the edges of the strips with a little water and press firmly to seal. 5. Brush the top of the pie with milk and sprinkle over caster sugar. Place the flan case on the preheated baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream.

Risborough Rangers FC
New pan-disability football group at Risborough Rangers FC offers free enjoyable ‘taster session’. Risborough Rangers Junior Football Club (RRFC), with the support of the Football Association, are planning to establish a pan-disability football group for boys and girls aged 7-11. A ‘taster session’ is organised for anyone who is interested in getting involved in this World Cup year. “We strongly feel, that in order to truly be a whole community club, the concept of inclusivity should be applied to give everyone who wants to get involved in local grassroots football and we hope to provide the opportunity for them to do so,” said Micky Baxter, RRJFC Chairman. ‘Pan-disability’ in footballing terms refers to individuals with different disabilities all participating together. It does not include those who are blind or in a wheelchair. It is those players who are not able, in the most part, to actively engage in able-bodied football. The majority of participants may, for example, have learning difficulties, are on the autistic spectrum, may have some

hearing or sight impairment, may have Downs or Tourette syndrome, dwarfism (restricted growth condition), may be an amputee with or without a prosthesis, as well as other impairments that impact on their sporting performance. “There is no doubt that participation does bring major benefits to the kids. It helps build their confidence, widens their social group, encourages positive interaction with other participants, provides physical activity, aids greater self-control and discipline. Above all it is an enjoyable learning activity!” continued Micky Baxter.

Osteopathy fights depression
Osteopathy is a drug free noninvasive manual medicine using soft tissue stretching, deep tactile pressure and mobilisation of the joints. With our lives becoming increasingly busy, yet more sedentary, Osteopathic treatment can positively affect the body to deliver a more balanced health overall. If you ignore the signs of back pain this can develop into other forms of referred pain around the body such as neck, shoulder or leg pain. Long term, this can have psychological ramifications which makes it harder for the patient to accept recovery as an achievable goal and like most long term health conditions, can lead to depression.
