Editors’ Letter Welcome to our very seasonal November/December issue of Chiltern View Risborough area. We have been extremely busy here for the last few weeks and are delighted to say that this looks like it will be a record issue across all 3 magazines. We have had a huge number of new advertisers and a lot of new artwork for our existing customers, many of whom are promoting Christmas and New Year events. We also have many advertisers offering gifts for Christmas and also venues to celebrate your festive party. Don’t forget the ‘Lights turning On’ in Risborough (page 54) and The Rotary Club who are also holding their annual ‘Tree of Light’ (page 30). In Chinnor there is the lovely Christingle, Christmas Eve family service at St. Andrews

Church and the ‘Carols around the Tree’, also on Christmas Eve outside the Post Office. We would like to thank Chinnor Post Office for their help and patience with our very large post run. It has made a big difference to us and we are very grateful. We have been hugely honoured this Autumn to have been nominated and then shortlisted for ‘Best Magazine Design ’at the annual Independent Publishers Conference. We know that many of you love the way our magazines look – because you tell us so, but it was amazing to receive recognition from a professional body. From all of us here at Chiltern View magazines, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Until the next time

Recipe of the Month

Roast Turkey

with Leek, Apricot and Chestnut Stuffing Serves 8-10 - Ready in approx 4½ hours, plus resting time

Roasting the turkey in a ’tent’ of buttered foil will keep it moist and succulent. Always allow time for the cooked bird to rest in a warm place before carving. Place the turkey in the lined roasting tin and smear all over the skin with the remaining butter. Sprinkle over the rest of the thyme leaves and season. 3. Cover the turkey with a tent of buttered foil and roast in the preheated oven for the calculated cooking time, basting occasionally. Uncover the turkey for the last 45 minutes until the skin is golden and the juices run clear when a skewer is inserted into the thickest part of one thigh. If the juices still run slightly pink return the turkey to the oven for a further 15-20 minutes then check again. 4. Leave the turkey, loosely covered with foil, in a warm place to rest for at least 20 minutes. Stretch the bacon rashers with the back of a knife and cut each rasher METHOD: in half. Wrap the short rashers around the cocktail 1. Heat half the butter and the olive oil in a frying sausages, securing with a cocktail stick. Place in baking pan and fry the leek and shallots for 6-7 minutes tray and cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes until until softened. Remove from the heat and stir golden and cooked through. Drizzle a couple of in the apricots, breadcrumbs, chestnuts and spoonfuls of juices from the turkey over the stuffing half the thyme leaves. Season well with salt and in the dish and cook in the oven at the same time freshly ground black pepper and leave to cool. as the bacon-wrapped sausages for 20 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Serve the turkey on a large warmed platter with 5. Growing from seed

When the weather is against you making your garden a no go zone, this is the time of year to think of the forthcoming Spring and the new plants you can produce yourself from seed. There are many benefits of growing from seed, you have the ability to choose the exact variety you would like, there is the satisfaction of producing your very own plants and last but not least think of the money you are saving! Ideally, a greenhouse is the place to get your seeds going, but if space is limited, there is no reason why you can’t use windowsills or your conservatory to start the process. Hygiene is so important. Do make sure your seed trays and pots are as clean as possible, and always use a new good seed compost, and of course sow quality seed. If space is an issue, think about using smaller half size seed trays instead of full size ones. This is a useful tip as it is tempting to sow as many seeds as you can, but this does mean you can have a glut of just one variety, so do think about sowing less. All gardeners are always keen to get things going as soon as possible, but do bare in mind that just because there 10

is a mild spell in January, there is still a long way to go before tender annuals or vegetables plants can go out into your beds. Don’t sow too early. You don’t want your plants getting bigger and bigger but the weather still cold and frosty. Something to think about is that seeds sown much later , say March, because of the longer days and warmer conditions will germinate a lot quicker than those sown in January.

April. If in doubt, push your hand into the soil, if you are able to leave it in for 30 seconds , sow away, if the bed is still too wet and cold for your hand, leave it be for another day!

It does pay to be patient.

Well, this is the time to wish all our customers and friends a very Happy Christmas, we are open right up to 4pm on Christmas Eve.

There are a number of vegetables in particular that prefer to be sown directly into the soil. Carrots, Radish, Beetroot etc will be quite happy with this process, but do make sure the soil is warm enough to aid germination. Usually, think about direct sowing towards the end of

All of us at the nursery are keen seed sowers, so if you do need any advice about which varieties to choose, or when is the best time to sow a particular plant or vegetable, do pop in and ask.

See you soon, and happy gardening. Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell

Look forward to a comfortable, warm and secure winter Autumn is a lovely season; there's something magical about the crisp, clear days, the first smell of woodsmoke, and leaves beginning to turn golden brown. But it is also a reminder that winter is approaching, and so it is also the time when many people begin to research care options for themselves or an elderly loved-one. So for anyone concerned about their own wellbeing or that of a family member or friend, we invite you to get in touch with us at this time. Our award-winning homes are a refreshing alternative to what many people think of when considering a care home: lovely surroundings, excellent menu, and a programme of activity, entertainment and hobbies that is acknowledged as industry-leading. But most importantly, we believe our care is second to none. Don’t wait for the nights to draw in and the cold to take hold. Call us today and give yourself the time you need to plan for a pleasant winter, whatever the weather brings.

What gift will you give yourself this Christmas? Cartoon by: Henck and the CBT Partnership in Hertfordshire.

Do you look back on 2014 and wonder where on earth it went, with whole months a blur? It’s so easy to find ourselves rushing through days ruled by work, family duties and the neverending beeping of emails or text messages. The problem is, our minds, so efficient at getting everything done, then get preoccupied by going over and over things that have already happened to us or projecting into the future. This can be a real problem, especially if it stops us from getting the sleep we need. As the end of the year approaches and we hurry on to the next task, time rushes past and we look back and wonder where the months, and even the years have gone.

Give yourself the gift of time, with Mindfulness Mindfulness is a different way to approach your life, one that helps you to stop and appreciate the present moment. It is based on age-old meditation practices, but without the difficult postures, free of any religious association and is practical for everyday use – from dealing with stress at work, queues at the supermarket or being held up in traffic. There is no chanting or burning of incense involved, I promise! Mindfulness is a life-enhancing, very gentle and compassionate practice, which can help you to relax more easily, cope with difficulty better and live a fuller and happier life. Research has also shown that it can help people with a range of problems including insomnia, stress, depression, chronic pain, and anxiety. By giving you permission to slow down, and by helping you to ‘wake up’ to life, and truly appreciate the present moment, mindfulness helps you regain precious time, finding peace and tranquility in the midst of the chaos, one breath at a time. 22

Mindfulness – the gift of peace and tranquility If you’d like to stop rushing through life, learn to live ‘in the moment’ and discover a new feeling peace and a zest for life, check out your local mindfulness group. Mindfulness Chilterns runs regular classes, retreats and sitting groups in Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns. Throughout the winter there will be Mindfulness Taster Evenings. Come along to the next one on Wednesday 10th December from 7.30 – 9.00pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Princes Risborough, or check our website for other taster opportunities. Our next mindfulness courses start on Monday 19th January 2015 and will run every Monday for eight weeks. A new daytime course will be held in Lacey Green from 11.00am-12.30pm and the evening course will be held in Bledlow from 7.30-9.00pm. For more details see www.mindfulnesschilterns.co.uk or email Jane Barker on mindfulminds@yahoo.co.uk if you have any questions or would like to book a place on the Taster evening or 8 week course. “Before I studied mindfulness, I never felt that I had enough hours in the day, I was always feeling stressed. Now I feel as if I have rediscovered extra time, just by being more ‘present’ in the moment.”

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog(s) of the Month Hi, my name is Simba, I’m a 6 year old German Shepherd Dog type. I am a lovely boy although very overweight, I am on a strict diet and my new owners must continue this as I am doing well and losing some of my excess weight. I am very strong so will need some lead training, my exercise will need to be built up gradually as I lose more weight.

If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

I LOVE my toys and will quite happily entertain myself with them. I would like a home with people who have experience of German Shepherd Dogs I cannot live with dogs or cats and would like a home where any children are aged 10 years and over.

Wildlife Trust protects ‘Jewels of the Chilterns’

Autumn is one of the best times of the year to appreciate the glorious ‘Jewels’ of the Chilterns, the woodlands and valleys that make our countryside so special. The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) already looks after several of these precious sites including Chinnor Hill, Oakley Hill and Windsor Hill. From November the Wildlife Trust hopes to add Yoesden, a woodland and chalk grassland site near Radnage, to its Chilterns reserves. In September BBOWT launched an appeal to buy and save Yoesden. The site is renowned for its variety of wild flowers, butterflies and moths on a chalk grassland bank. Above this the ‘hanger’ woodland of beech, yew and whitebeam trees clothes the steep hillside that overlooks Radnage Valley. Estelle Bailey, chief executive of BBOWT, led the appeal. “Yoesden is a wonderful jewel in

the Chilterns. When I visited the site in the summer I was delighted to see so many varieties of butterflies fluttering up from the pink and purple flowers of wild thyme and marjoram. “The sounds of crickets and grasshoppers and the scent of wild herbs were amazing, and the views from the top of the bank looking across Radnage Valley are stunning. BBOWT has the opportunity now to protect this precious site for everyone to enjoy, and to look after it so that more wildlife can thrive here.” There will be guided walks, workshops and events, work parties to help control the scrub, and detailed surveying of the grassland to ensure it is kept in the best condition for flowers and herbs that provide essential food and shelter for butterflies and other insects. The distinctive character of chalk grassland in the Chilterns is of national importance. 80 percent of the UK’s chalk grassland has been destroyed since the 1950s, which means the beautiful swathe of grassland at Yoesden is a valuable site to treasure. Butterfly enthusiasts, who visit regularly in the spring and summer to photograph the 200 species of butterflies and moths there, regard Yoesden as one of the gems of the Thames Valley.

a bridleway through Yoesden, which make attractive circular walks between Radnage and Bledlow Ridge. When the site came onto the market 20 years ago a local family in Radnage literally bought the view because they loved it so much, and valued it as a special place to enjoy wildlife and walk with friends. With advice from John Morris of the Chiltern Woodlands Project and a few grants, they have ensured Yoesden is well cared for. Volunteer work parties have kept paths open, gates maintained, trees planted and scrub cleared to open up viewpoints. If the Yoesden Bank Appeal is successful the Wildlife Trust intends to continue this careful maintenance. Go to www.bbowt.org. uk/yoesden to see photos and videos of this beautiful site, and click on the Adonis blue butterfly to give to the Yoesden Bank Appeal.

Soak Yourself

Walking towards the boutique, I could smell the amazing aromas, somehow escaping through the doors, and travelling down the street to meet me. The place I am visiting is the ‘SOAK Yourself Bath & Body Boutique’, located on the High Street in Lane End, which opened in August. As I entered through the front door, I let a gasp of delight at the loveliness of the space. Designed with an up-cycled feel in mind, the shop is an oasis of calm. Q: Why Lane End? There’s not much footfall in the High Street. A: Our flagship products (the Bath Ritual Recipe Kits) have been on the market for two years, selling online and into other retailers such as Fortnum & Mason. The time came to expand, and the premises in Lane End were perfect with two large rooms in the back, which have become the manufacturing and production spaces. Originally, I was going to use the shop front as desk space, but decided to open the showroom instead. Also, Lane End has a very large catchment area, and being able to visit the boutique to buy a gift negates having to travel to Marlow or High Wycombe.

Q: What is so special about your products: A: They work, and they are suitable for everyone, from mums to sons. You can do your gift buying all in one place. We have a mix and match service where you can personally choose little treats and have them beautifully packaged. All of our products are made with natural ingredients, organic as far as possible, 100% essential oils, they are made by hand, and are luxuriously packaged. Our goal is to help people to relax more, and we encourage everyone to try to take small steps towards going chemical free when it comes to body care. Q: Do you have any celebrity clients? A: Yes, one in particular we are very delighted to have as a customer, and I would love to tell you who she is, but then we might lose her custom as she is a very private person. We also provide bespoke gift selections to a prominent London restaurant owner, a Lord, and a few other well-known faces. Q: What is the most exciting destination one could go to and see your products? A: Wow, that’s a tough one. It would probably have to be the Four Seasons Resort in Mauritius. I highly recommend a visit. The range of soaps and bath kits speak for themselves. You can find the boutique at: 21 High Street, Lane End, HP14 3JF Tel 01494 415710 www.soakyourself.co.uk

Famous People of the Chilterns: NANCY ASTOR

Nancy Astor is famous for being Britain’s first woman MP, gaining a seat in Parliament in 1919, only one year after women first got the vote. She was American and had married into the very wealthy Astor family, meeting her husband, Waldorf Astor, in 1905 on a liner bound for England. As a wedding gift Waldorf’s father gave him Cliveden, the magnificent estate overlooking the Thames near Marlow, and here the couple settled and began to develop a lavish social life. In their sumptuous Italianate mansion, the Astors set out to woo the aristocracy in extravagant style. With Nancy’s quick wit and new breed of American self confidence, Cliveden became a glittering hub of political, literary and social life, welcoming guests ranging from Gandhi to the pioneering pilot Amy Johnson. Nancy’s own political career began in 1919. When her husband became Viscount Astor on his father’s death and had to give up his place in the House of Commons to take up his father’s place in the House of Lords, she fought and won his seat as Conservative MP for Plymouth Sutton. ‘Vote for Lady Astor and

your children will weigh more’ ran her campaign slogan. In Parliament she worked Nancy Astor for the rights of (Wikimedia) women and children and campaigned for temperance, famously quipping “One reason why I don’t drink is because I wish to know when I am having a good time”. She also worked to get women into the Civil Service, the police force and the House of Lords. Nancy Astor was well-known for her witty though sometimes cutting remarks. A couple that have been attributed to her include “I married beneath me. All women do” and “The only thing I like about rich people is their money.” Nancy left Cliveden on her husband’s death in 1952, but in 1963 Cliveden was again in the news as the backdrop to the scandalous Profumo Affair. The splendid estate at Cliveden with its formal gardens, woodland and Thames riverbank is now opened to the public by the National Trust. You can walk around the gardens and woodland and enjoy some lovely views across the Thames Valley and the Chilterns. The house itself is a hotel: short tours are available on Thursdays and Sundays between April and October (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cliveden). This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Chinnor Windmill gets its sails Supplied by Adrian Marshall

Supplied by Ian Wagstaff

47 years after the mill was demolished, and following over 15,000 hours of rebuilding work by volunteers, Chinnor windmill now has sails again. The mill was built in 1789 and produced flour for Chinnor until 1923 when a steam engine finally took over and the mill was left to decay. The site was finally 50

cleared in 1967 to make way for housing. In 1980 some surviving parts were re-discovered in Essex, and a plan was hatched by the Parish Counncil to bring these back to the village and rebuild the mill in Whites Field, just 150 yards from its original location. A group of volunteers (who had just finished restoring nearby Lacey Green smock mill) were looking for their next project, and so the Chinnor Windmill Society was formed. Supplied by Adrian Marshall

The mill was rebuilt from the ground up using as many of the orginal parts as possible, guided by old photos of the mill. Chinnor mill is a post mill where the windmill buck is mounted on a post so it can turn to face the wind. For convenience (and safety!) the mill was re-built resting on the ground, but in 2011 it was finally lifted onto its post. The fitting of its new professionally built sails, is another major milestone for the project, which continues with hopes to grind grain one day soon. Volunteers, guides and fundraisers are welcome!

What you need to know about Sciatica

The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain and possibly tingling, numbness or weakness that originates in the lower back and travels through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of the leg. Sciatica is not a medical diagnosis; it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Sciatica is often characterized by one or more of the following symptoms: • Constant pain in only one side of the buttock or leg (rarely can occur in both legs)

• Pain that is worse when sitting • Burning or tingling down the leg (vs. a dull ache) • Weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot • A sharp pain that may make it difficult to stand up or to walk For some people, sciatica pain can be severe and debilitating. For others, the sciatica symptoms might be infrequent and irritating, but have the potential to get worse. Either way, early treatment is advisable. At The Luxton Clinic our Osteopaths, Ian and Victoria, successfully treat many

patients with sciatic pain. As well as hands on treatment they will also advise on exercises to help relieve the pain. Without exercise and movement, the back muscles and spinal structures become deconditioned and less able to support the back. Movement helps exchange nutrients and fluids within the discs to keep them healthy and prevent pressure on the sciatic nerve. If you would like to make an appointment please phone us on 01844 352200. Suzanne is no stranger to the stage. As well as having many pantomime credits to her name she has also appeared in Chicago in the West End and in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Fresh out of the kitchen of this year’s 2014 Celebrity Masterchef is Russell Grant. Russell’s dream came true when he was given the opportunity to learn how to dance on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing (2011). Russell has starred in The Wizard of Oz, and returned to the West End as special guest star in Midnight Tango in 2013. He has since launched ‘Zalza’ with Flavia, a new dance-fitness DVD and can often be seen on This Morning.
