Editors’ Letter Welcome to the New Year January/February issue of Chiltern View (Risborough ).
(©Les Stocker). They have a fantastic wildlife hospital so do give them a call if you have any wildlife concerns and take a look at their editorial on Page 36 for more information.
As you read this, the seasonal and New Year celebrations will have been and gone but we do hope that you have all had a lovely time. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our fantastic team of local deliverers who do their very best to get the magazines out on time, and in all weathers. They are managed and organised by our Distribution Manager, Sharon and we would like to thank them (and Sharon of course) for all their hard work in 2014.
For many of us, looking forward into 2015 means a new start, or certainly time for changes, having reflected on the year that has just gone by. Perhaps you would like to redecorate your home, landscape your garden, pamper yourself with hair and beauty treatments, join a new exercise class or community organisation, or just catch up with all those outstanding jobs around the house? We have a magazine full of local trades and businesses that can help with all of these things and more.
Winter is a tough time for lots of people but also our wildlife. We do hope you like our front cover picture of this gorgeous hedgehog in the snow, kindly provided by Tiggywinkles

Recipe of the Month
Plum And Almond Tart Serves 6, ready in 1 1/4 hours, plus chilling
Served with thick cream, custard or ice cream, this tart makes a delicious warming winter pud. You can use other fruits if plums are not available –try chunks of apples or pears or Armagnac-soaked prunes for a special occasion. Ingredients: • 175g self-raising flour • 100g unsalted butter, chilled and diced • 50g ground almonds • 3 tbsp caster sugar • 1 small egg, beaten • 50g natural marzipan, chilled and grated • 4 large plums, stones removed and quartered • 2 tbsp flaked almonds, roughly chopped • 2tbsp Demerara sugar Method: 1. Sift the flour into a bowl, add the diced butter and, using your fingertips, rub the fat into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the ground almonds. Remove ¼ of the mixture and chill in the fridge. 8
2. Add the caster sugar and beaten egg to the remaining mixture and mix to a soft, slightly sticky dough. Using floured hands press the dough into the base and up the sides of a 28 x 10cm oblong loose-based flan tin (see tip). Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas Mark 4. Scatter the grated marzipan in the chilled flan case and top with the plum quarters (skin side up). Stir the flaked almonds and Demerara sugar into the reserved breadcrumb mixture and scatter over the plums. 4. Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until crisp and deep golden brown. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Remove the tart from the tin and slice and serve. TIP: If you don’t have an oblong shaped flan tin use a 20cm round loose-based fluted flan tin instead.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog(s) of the Month Hi, my name is Vinny, I’m a 3 year old large mixed breed. I am so much fun to be around and I love learning new thing once you can get me motivated!
I would like a quiet but active home where my new family have experience of large breeds. I will need at least 2 hours of exercise a day and would like a large garden so I can have a run around as my re-call is not very good especially around wildlife. I will need owners who can work with me and visitors to the home – I will need to be kept behind a dog gate as I can get nervous of people I don’t know. I may be able to live with another dog but not cats and would like a home where any children are aged 16years and over. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

The Princes Centre
Those of us in good health may not be aware of the importance of the Princes Centre. However if you have any form of disability or are elderly or lonely, or need a break from caring for someone, the award-winning Centre can provide a vital service, offering a wide range of activities, occasional entertainment and outings. Staff are especially trained to help with personal care. Transport to the Centre, refreshments and midday meals are available. The viability of the Centre had been uncertain for many years but it now has a very secure future. In 1998, Bucks County Council were threatening to close it, and Risborough Cares Charity provided all the extras to enable the service to continue, financing educational and recreational activities, replacing worn out furnishings and providing annual boat trips and pantomime visits for the clients. The ‘Having A Good Day’ consultation in 2010 by Bucks County Council proposed to sell 22 Day Centres in Bucks, which they had been advised were in a poor state of repair and not fit for purpose, and centralise day care services to a handful of large and impersonal ‘hubs’. Risborough Cares Charity, along with the Princes Risborough Town Council, Churches Together and Risborough Area Partnership got together to try and save the Centre so that there would
always be friendly provision of day care locally. With the help of the Clare Foundation they formed a charitable company and took over the provision of services in 2012. Risborough Cares Charity purchased the bus for their use. The Princes Centre Appeal Fund was initiated in 2012 with a goal of £300,000. With the hard [unpaid] work of the trustees and fundraising committee and massive support from numerous local organisations and residents, enough funds were raised to help with startup costs, maintaining the bus, coping with essential repairs to the building, and, most recently purchasing the buildings. We have all been amazed at everyone’s generosity. The trustees, staff and clients of the Princes Centre would like to convey their sincere thanks. After 2 years of provision, the service is now self-financing. However there remains a great deal to be achieved to bring the buildings up to scratch. The recent introduction of pledges has enabled lots of smaller repairs and replacements to be undertaken but we need more funds to help with the major works so please take a look at the web site www.princescentre.org and see if there is anything on the ‘pledge’ list that you or your organisation might like to help with. We would also welcome help from anyone who has time to help with tasks such as filling in grant application forms. Alternatively if you are able to offer an hour or so on a regular basis to help with a particular activity, you would be very welcome and you would be rewarded with Time Credits as a thank you. These can be used to gain free entry into concerts, national parks etc. Please ring Kim on 01844 345105 if you are interested.

What do your feet say about you?
Podiatrists are often the first to recognise health problems. Not many of us are aware that the feet can actually be a good barometer of our overall health. From foot pain to numbness and tingling, your feet can often show symptoms of disease before any other part of your body. That’s why Podiatrists are highly trained health professionals and registered with the HCPC to maintain a high standard of care to our patients. Persistent cold feet may be an indicator of poor circulation or even a thyroid problem, the gland that regulates temperature
and metabolism. Chilblains, an abnormal reaction to the cold, are small itchy patches on the skin which usually disappear in 7-14 days. Thick, yellow or brown nails could indicate a fungal infection beneath the toenail. People with Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis or other immune deficiencies may be more susceptible but it is always important to get this stubborn problem treated by a podiatrist as it may lead to further skin infections. A swollen and painful big toe may be an arthritic condition known as Gout. This is caused by tiny crystals of sodium urate forming in and around the toe

joint. These crystals can cause inflammation and damage to the cartilage. A change in lifestyle is sometimes necessary, losing weight or cutting down on alcohol. Persistent pins and needles or numbness in the feet can be a sign of peripheral neuropathy indicating some damage has been caused to the peripheral nervous system. Diabetes and alcohol abuse are two of the main causes of peripheral neuropathy. Seek advice from your podiatrist if you are concerned.

Famous People of the Chilterns: rUPert BrooKe
Rupert Brooke was a poet in the early 20th century who celebrated England and the English countryside. He is best known for his famous Five War Sonnets, reflecting the patriotic mood that largely prevailed at the start of the First World War. One of them includes the famous line: ‘If I should die, think only this of me: that there’s some corner of a foreign field that is forever England’. Brooke’s Romantic vision of England included the Chilterns. Before the war he would take the train to Wendover, and from there walk along the ridge of hills to Princes Risborough. He and his friends would refresh themselves on such walks at the Pink and Lily pub at Parslow’s Hillock, above Princes Risborough, where they enjoyed some very merry lunches. The Pink and Lily is still open and Brooke’s favourite niche in the pub is dedicated to his memory, with photos and excerpts from his poetry. His many visits to this area inspired him to pen his poem The Chilterns, which includes the evocative verse:
‘I shall desire and I shall find the best of my desires; the autumn road, the mellow wind that soothes the darkening shires.
Rupert Brooke (Wikimedia)
And laughter, and inn-fires.’ As poet, scholar, dramatist, literary critic, travel writer, political activist and soldier ‘the handsomest man in England’ packed plenty into his short life. When WW1 began he joined the Royal Naval Division. He did not live to see much action though: in 1915, en route to Gallipoli, he contracted sepsis following a mosquito bite and died. He was buried on the Greek island of Skyros. You can follow in Brooke’s footsteps by walking the Ridgeway National Trail between Wendover and Princes Risborough, or take a circular walk from Risborough town centre and pop into the Pink and Lily pub for a merry lunch like Brooke. There is lots of information on local walks at www.chilternsaonb.org/walks-rides. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop.

Buckinghamshire University Technical College (UTC)
Buckinghamshire University Technical College (UTC) offers a new concept in education. It gives 14-19 year olds the opportunity to take a highly regarded, full time, technicallyoriented course of study specialising in
either Construction or IT. Responding to growing demands from the industry for well-educated, high calibre technicians, the College combines hand and mind to integrate national curriculum requirements with technical and practical elements. Alongside the usual GCSE/A levels, students study technical qualifications supporting our IT and Construction specialism. At the end of their course, they are armed with a strong set of both academic and technical exam results, giving them an advantage over their peers as they step into work, or further education.
students gain valuable workrelated learning to improve their employability within the Construction and IT sectors. Through their technical skills learning, exposure to the industry and employers from day one, our young people are more used to and ready for the working world, than those in a usual school environment. They have an excellent understanding of their specialism and the career opportunities available. Their employability skills are outstanding because they understand what is expected of them in the workplace as they’ve real experience of it. We’d be delighted to meet anyone who might be interested in our unique offer. Please visit our website www.buckinghamshireutc.co.uk for details of our upcoming events, or call 01296 388688 to make an appointment.
The UTC brings together major local employers like Taylor Wimpey, Cisco, Esri UK and McAfee in equal partnership. They helped form our curriculum and ensure our 34

Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital
At this time of year, over half of the casualties coming in to Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital each day are hedgehogs. Small hedgehogs. Too small to survive hibernation hedgehogs. Hedgehogs have their babies much later than other British mammals, so the latest of the babies born will only have a very short amount of time to put on the weight they need before the very cold weather sets in and they will need to build a warm hibernaculum (nest) to snuggle down. Tiggywinkles will normally overwinter somewhere in the region of 350 to 500 hedgehogs every winter. This involves keeping them in separate cages, if they are very small or injured, which needs to be cleaned out
every day. The bedding needs to be washed and dried every day. The hedgehogs need to be fed and given fresh water every day, and their bowls need to be washed and sterilised every day. Even on Christmas Day. 36
Working alongside the specialist veterinary team, are the students. Tiggywinkles is a City & Guilds accredited training centre, and they offer practical training to students leading to a Diploma qualification, as well as giving them valuable hands-on experience working with all of the different species of wildlife being cared for in the Hospital including all of the hedgehogs. Feeding and cleaning out each hedgehog every day takes a
long time – so it takes the whole day to clean and feed all of the animals in the Hospital. It costs 94p to wash and sterilise the
bowls and bedding for one hedgehog per day. With so many hedgehogs, the winter the feeding costs can mount up and they also get through a lot of newspaper in the cages. The cold wet weather also generates other problems for these little spikey creatures. Every hedgehog coming into the Hospital is tested for lungworm, which is very prevalent in the winter months. This internal parasite causes coughing, pain and if left untreated can kill. In normal winter months around 60% of hedgehogs can present with lungworm, although the last very wet winter we had increased lungworm to nearly 100% of hedgehogs, along with a marked increase in other internal parasites such as fluke and thorny-headed worm. Tiggywinkles can identify these parasites with their in-house laboratory and have the veterinary expertise to treat them and care for the hedgehogs until they are big enough and the weather is warm enough to release them in the Spring.
To find out more on becoming a student or how to sponsor a hedgehog, visit the Tiggywinkles website www.tiggywinkles.com

Book Review Coupling Roses are red and violets are blue, most poems rhyme… but they say marriage is the end of romance, so this one doesn’t. We’ve put together a collection of books for the big V-Day celebrations that focus on what happens after you and your love have been together for a while. Is there really such a thing as ‘happily ever after’? Or this this the beginning of the end? A Spot of Bother - Mark Haddon The secrets, hopes and disappointments of our ordinary lives come into question in Haddon’s great novel about one family and the couples within it. George and Jean have been married for decades, but their daughter Katie, divorced, is now getting remarried, to someone who has ‘strangler’s hands’, according to her brother. Jean’s trying to keep her affair under wraps and George has discovered a strange lump or lesion and decides he’s definitely on his last legs. It’s all a bit of a pickle really and a highly amusing game of who’ll end up with whom. Couples - John Updike It’s a bit naughty, this one. But it’s a classic, so you can’t be frowned upon for reading it! It focuses on the promiscuous lives of ten couples living in a small Massachusetts town during the 1960s and reading it is like stepping back into the decade of free love and experimentation. It’s full of historic references and mixes fact and fiction incredibly well. The group of married, fairly well-off thirty-something year old couples are taking full advantage of new methods of contraception and more liberal attitudes. Updike’s novel questions whether it’s a new utopian society, or whether they’re actually in a hell of their own making. Us - David Nicholls Women marry men thinking they can change them; men marry women hoping they’ll never change. Douglas would be quite happy to grow old and die together, but for Connie, that sentiment means their relationship is already dead in the water. She announces she’s going to pack her bags and leave him, but is persuaded by Douglas to make one final trip together. He’s got a master plan to reignite the spark and is pinning everything 48
on this one holiday. Sounds like a fool-proof plan… The Children Act - Ian McEwan High Court Judge Fiona May presides over family cases, whilst her own home life is crumbling about her. Her husband’s asked her if they can have an open marriage and it doesn’t go down all that well. When he leaves, she is left questioning her own belief system and what it means to be dignified and respectable. On the work front she’s tackling the case of a teenage boy whose parents won’t permit a medical procedure that could save his life, because of their religious beliefs. She’s struggling to get a grip while her world falls apart around her and it’s truly compelling writing as she battles in the courtroom and on the home front. Juliet, Naked - Nick Hornby When you’ve been around the block and back again, several thousand times, perhaps it’s time to move on. Annie’s been playing it safe and settling for Duncan and now she’s getting restless for some of that dramatic love she’s always dreamed of; the kind that sweeps you off your feet. The only trouble is she’s more likely to end up blown off her feet in the windswept Northern town of Gooleness. Does the excitement she craves lie with the American rock star who emails her… or does she need to look elsewhere? The Rosie Project - Graeme Simsion Ok, so here’s a last one that’s been thrown in because we think it’s absolutely marvellous and because it features 39 year old Don Tillman’s ‘Wife Project’: the most scientific approach to finding a missus that you’re ever likely to come across. If you thought eHarmony asked a lot of questions, wait until you fill in Don’s questionnaire. He’s tall, dark and handsome, but he also seems to have undiagnosed Asperger’s Syndrome. This professor of genetics hasn’t found his ‘other half’ and so devises a series of questions designed to filter out the undesirables. Enter Rosie. She’s everything he’s not looking for, and yet she might just be perfect for him. You will fall in love with the frustrating character that is Don Tillman and you’ll be rooting for the old ball and chain to be secured by the end of the novel. Proof there really is someone out there for everyone.

Growing Vegetables
We are now at the start of another gardening year, and after the fantastic weather of 2014, let’s hope we get similar conditions this year . The days are beginning to get longer, one can really feel that Spring is approaching, and when there is a nice dry warm day, why not get out in the garden and start to prepare your ground? Vegetables in particular require a nutrient rich soil to give their best. Dig down at least one spades depth to really break down the soil. Remove any weeds, debris or stones from the plot then dig in lots of good quality farmyard manure. This manure will add lots of nutrients as well as helping with the drainage. If you have grown vegetables in your plot before, you really must operate a crop rotation scheme. The principle is to grow your plants in a different spot each year, ensuring there is no opportunity for pests and diseases to build up a resistance and therefore reduce the quality of your crops. Each family of vegetables require specific soil conditions, rotating your crops each season also prevents parts of your plot declining in fertility. 50
For instance, if you divide your vegetable plot into say, five sections, it is a fairly simple procedure to rotate them each year. Section 1: Brassicas 2: Legumes 3: Onions 4: Potatoes 5: Root crops Each Spring, simply rotate each crop to the next section, so in five years’ time you are back where you started in year 1. By following this system you give each section of the plot to recover and feed the ground for the next year. For instance, nitrogen is produced by growing peas and beans, therefore benefiting the new crop of another family of vegetable in the following season.
Once your plot has been dug over and the manure added, prior to planting, give the beds a good dressing of chicken manure pellets to make sure the area is full of energy ready for growing time. All you need to do now is have a little patience and just wait for the weather to turn and make sure the Spring really has arrived. Then, it’s planting time again. If you need any more vegetable advice, do pop in for a chat. We here at the nursery are all keen veg growers, and we’re more than happy to pass on any tips and advice that’s needed. Happy gardening. A New Year. A Fresh Start? Let’s make 2015 your best year for years!
This is the time of year when concern about older loved ones is most acute. The weather is inclement, days are short and it can be difficult or even dangerous to get around. For anyone who is interested in finding out more about care for themselves or their loved ones, we’re able to help. We offer a refreshing alternative to a traditional nursing home. Our new purposebuilt homes are beautifully appointed with private en-suite bedrooms, inviting dining areas and stylish lounges. Our menu is excellent and varied; and our approach to activities, hobbies and entertainment is award-winning. Most importantly our care and nursing is, we believe, second to none. This is perhaps why many describe our care homes as the best in the UK. Make that first step towards creating a positive 2015 for yourself or someone you care about. Please call us on 01494 480292 and speak to our Home Manager, Georgina Watts who can tell you more about Chiltern Grange.
