Take care of your lawn
After a mild, damp winter your lawn is probably looking very lush and green - but with a closer inspection, you may well find that all that is green, may not be grass! The recent conditions are just right for moss to thrive, and now is the time to take action. Give the grass a good raking with a lawn rake, and you will see just how much debris has been collected since the Autumn. If the lawn just has a moss problem, then a dressing of lawn sand will do the trick. This product tackles the moss, and will green up the remaining grass. Leave the lawn for a couple of weeks, and once the moss has turned black, return with your lawn rake and clear the dead matter. You will now be left with a few bald patches where the moss once lived, so the next step is to sow new grass seed. There are a variety of grass seeds available, shady, tough and show - the finest seed for a top quality finish . First of all , spread a thin covering of either a John Innes seed compost or some top soil, water well, then apply the seed. At this time of year, the grass seed will germinate in around a fortnight. Leave the new grass to establish before mowing, then for the first cut, mow at the 10
highest mower level. You will see the newly sown grass start to establish and fill out, and after a couple of light mowings, you will be able to cut at the same level as your established lawn. If moss in not a particular problem, but your lawn just looks tired and worn out, use a feed, weed & mosskiller to give the area a general Spring clean. There are a variety of products available, you can either scatter a granular preparation that once down needs either rain or a session with the hosepipe to kick it into action. We also stock a soluble version and a liquid
version, and there are a variety of sizes to treat a postage size lawn to a huge rambling area. If you have divots and dips in your lawn and wish to level the space out, use lawn dressing to fill the dead spots. Lawn dressing is a combination of top soil, sharp sand and peat, and it benefits the lawn by helping with drainage and improving drought tolerance . Happy gardening, see you soon, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell
and all at Askett Nurseries.

Recipe of the Month
Herby Stuffed Baked Tomatoes Serves 2 - 4, Ready in 1 hour Large and juicy beefsteak tomatoes are the perfect shape and size for stuffing and make an economical midweek supper. Serve hot or cold with a crisp green salad drizzled with a tangy balsamic glaze. Ingredients: • 4 firm beefsteak tomatoes • 3 tbsp Virgin olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 75g fresh white breadcrumbs • 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley • 1 tbsp fresh chopped mint • 2 tsp capers, drained and rinsed • Salt and freshly ground black pepper tip: Replace the breadcrumbs with cous cous if liked. Place 115g cous cous in a heatproof bowl and pour over boiling water to cover. Stir once then place a plate on top of the bowl and leave for 10 minutes or until the liquid has been absorbed. Fluff up the grains with a fork then stir into the fried onion mixture as above. Add some toasted pine nuts, chopped dried apricots, fresh chopped coriander a little harissa paste for a more exotic flavour. 16
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. 2. Use a sharp knife to slice the tops off the tomatoes and slice a thin sliver from the base of each tomato to prevent them wobbling in the dish. 3. Use a teaspoon to scoop out the seeds and flesh from each tomato. Finely chop and reserve the flesh but discard the seeds. Place the tomato shells in a shallow ovenproof dish. 4. Heat half the olive oil in a medium-sized frying pan. Add the chopped onion and fry over a medium-high heat for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Add the garlic and fry for a further 4-5 minutes until tender and golden. Stir in the chopped tomato flesh, breadcrumbs, parsley, mint and capers and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. Spoon the breadcrumb mixture into the tomato shells, pressing it down gently then top with the lids. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the tomatoes are just tender. Serve hot or cold.

Aylesbury Waterside Theatre Puppets, tea parties and the Khan family! Spring has sprung and so too has a season of bloomin’ marvellous shows at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. Puppets are not just for kids. Never has this been so true! Part flesh, part felt but full of heart the Avenue Q cast take to the stage in May. Winner of the Tony Awards’ ‘Triple Crown’ for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, this cheeky, hilarious and uproariously
entertaining musical is like no other. Packed full of mischief, bad behaviour and political incorrectness, the show is suitable for ages 14+. A well-intentioned tea party is set to descend into chaos with Alan Ayckbourn’s classic play of acute social observations, Absent Friends. Exploring friendship, marriage and what it ultimately means to be happy, this is one of Ayckbourn’s finest plays.
West End run, East is East is heading to the Waterside, a must-see modern comedy. Pakistani chip shop owner George Khan, is determined to give his children a strict Muslim upbringing against the backdrop of 1970s Salford. Household tension reaches breaking point as their longsuffering English mother, Ella (played by Pauline McLynn) gets caught in the crossfire – her loyalties divided between her marriage and the free will of her children.

Book Review - dining out They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there is if you’re willing to do a little digging for it, and sometimes that means literally. If you’ve ever fancied foraging, growing your own grub or even becoming totally self-sufficient then this could be the book selection for you. If not, then you could just toss the page into a nice salad, and eat that instead! Wild Food: A Complete Guide for Foragers - roger phillips A leading expert on food foraging, Philips hasn’t managed to kill himself with a dodgy mushroom yet (and he’s been doing it for decades) so it’s a safe bet that what he says, goes. In this easy-toidentify guide to the edible plants found in our woodlands and hedgerows, he even throws in some recipes for good measure. If you’re just thinking, ‘nettle soup’ then you’ll be disappointed, because Roger’s recipes are delicious. You’ll never need to buy a bag of salad again. The Hedgerow Cookbook: 100 Delicious Recipes for Wild Food - ginny Knox and Caro Willson If you can pick more than you can eat on the spot, standing next to a hedge in the sunshine, then this is the book for you. It’s all very well taking home all those delicious (free!) berries, but if you don’t know what to then do with them all you’ll end up with are more unidentified bags of something-or-other in the bottom of your freezer. This book is all about turning your own mini-harvest into a feast. Instead of jam, why not try ‘fruit leather’ or how about making a flavoured cheese, or cordial or even booze?! You’re only really limited by how many blackberries, sloes, rosehips and wild garlic bulbs you can find, so it’s really worth getting out and taking advantage of nature’s bounty. Practical Self Sufficiency - dick Strawbridge and James Strawbridge You might recognise father and son team Dick and James from the television. You’d at least remember Dick’s moustache if you’ve ever caught their programme ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green’. The Strawbridge family double-act are all for making small changes that can transform the way we exist on this planet. There are top tips for reducing your carbon footprint, excellent advice on how to lower your household bills and even how to build a wormery. It’s great fun to read and if it doesn’t help you at all then you can at least buy it in hardback, and use it as a shelter. The Self Sufficient-ish Bible - Andy and dave hamilton For anyone who always has good intentions but for whom the idea of living the ‘Good Life’ is a 30
little bit on the extreme side, then twin brothers Andy and Dave are the boys for you. They’re realistic in their approach to living a more green and organic lifestyle, appreciating that most of us are just looking for some ideas for becoming a little more self-reliant and not up for doing a total ‘Tom and Barbara’. They have a refreshing and fun approach to recycling, growing your own produce and making sure your home is more energy efficient. It’s not at all preachy, and with small suggestions it could definitely help to improve your life and outlook, without the need for a total, intimidating overhaul. The Moneyless Man: A Year of Freeconomic Living - Mark Boyle Former businessman Mark Boyle swapped his suit for a pair of jeans and some rubber gloves and vowed to live for an entire year without spending a penny. He knew that it wasn’t going to be pretty, but his journey through bad hygiene, scavenging and living a truly frugal existence is fascinating. Dabbling in self-sufficiency wasn’t for Boyle and his approach is extreme to say the very least. He’s gone totally ‘off the grid’ and, according to his friends and family, he may also have gone off his rocker. Whether you could adopt his philosophy or not, it’s a compelling idea and one that will make you question how you live and what’s important. Food For Free - richard Mabey If you want fast food, or at least a meal on the run, then you should carry this handy little guide around with you. It’s the ideal companion for the country lady or gent who fancies a snack on the move but has forgotten to pack the cheese and pickle sandwiches. There are details of over 100 edible plants, with clear illustrations and some interesting facts on how they’ve been used across the ages. It also talks you through the rules and regulations so that you don’t start munching on protected wild orchids by mistake. to give his children a strict Muslim upbringing against the backdrop of 1970s Salford. Household tension reaches breaking point as their long-suffering English mother, Ella (played by Pauline McLynn) gets caught in the crossfire – her loyalties divided between her marriage and the free will of her children.

Vets Corner
Did you know that 9th – 17th May is Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW)? Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the UK. Unfortunately, however, they often are a misunderstood species. Two conditions we see frequently are dental disease and obesity, and their subsequent complications. The detrimental effects of these can be reduced or prevented at home with some simple changes to your rabbit’s lifestyle.
32
Feeding your rabbit a hay and grass based diet with a pellet food is the best option for good dental health and preventing excess weight gain. Rabbits’ teeth continue to grow throughout their lives, so they require fibre to keep their teeth from overgrowing. Without this, rabbit teeth can grow excessively, potentially causing painful problems with their tongues, eyes, jaw or skull. Attaching a permanent run to their hutch with areas for them to hide in and jump promotes exercise and keeps their weight in check as well as providing them with enrichment.
Lots more information about rabbit care and RAW can be found on their website: www.rabbitawarenessweek.co.uk If concerned about your animals, please call Sprinz and Nash. Vets are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dr Sarah Armstrong BSc (Hons) BVSc MRCVS

The Wildlife Trust
Kate Titford from Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) is on a ghostly trail. A silent, ghostly-white shape glides past me a few yards above ground level. It’s dusk and I’m standing near a hedgerow overlooking a field of tussocky grass in a Chilterns valley. The bird that’s just flown by is a barn owl, that much-loved and iconic, farmland bird. But this is a rare sighting. Barn owls feed on small mammals, particularly short-tailed field voles that live in rough grass; the sort of tussocky habitats that you find around the edge of fields or next to hedgerows. Over the last 60 years we have lost 97% of lowland grassland and 50% of hedgerows in the UK, which means fewer places for barn owls to hunt for their prey. ‘Tidier’ farms mean fewer small mammals for the owls to hunt. Efficient combine harvesters drop less grain for voles and shrews to eat, and rodenticides prevent small mammals from living in farm buildings. Barn owls have also found themselves homeless. They traditionally nested in holes in trees or inside farm buildings. But old trees have been cut down or lost to disease and many barns converted into modern homes with no space for a nest.
Barn owls feathers are not waterproof like other birds. This makes them vulnerable to wet and cold weather because they’re unable to hunt for prey, and fewer survive to breed in spring. Wet summers also mean poor hunting conditions, just when barn owls need plenty of small mammals to raise their young. As a result of all that the number of barn owls in the UK fell dramatically during the last century. The situation sounds grim, but it isn’t all bad news. We still have barn owls in the Chilterns, and we’d like to see more of them. They need grassy fields with hedgerows to hunt over, and more places where they can breed to give them the best chance of survival. The Wildlife Trust is putting up nest boxes in reserves where there is good grassland and therefore plenty of food. Look out for the large, triangular or sometimes rectangular boxes on lone trees or the end walls of barns. Because barn owls usually hunt at dusk and in the early morning you may be lucky to see one, though you can hear their eerie screech from their nightly roost in a tree. Look on the ground below the roost where you’ll find pellets of regurgitated indigestible parts of their prey. Carefully opening up an owl pellet reveals their latest meals; beaks of small birds, a shoulder blade of a vole, or fur from a mouse. Visit www.bbowt.org.uk to discover more about barn owls, including videos and how to dissect an owl pellet.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Midge, I’m a 3 year old Patterdale Terrier Mix. I am an active & intelligent little boy who will need a home where people have experience of Patterdales or Terriers. I do need some further training but I love treats so I will pick things up quickly. I like to use my brain so will need to be kept occupied.
If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.
I would benefit from at least 2 hours exercise a day and would love a good sized garden so that I can play until I learn a recall!! I may be able to live with another dog & maybe even a cat. I would like any children in my new home to be aged 11 years and over.

A Gouty Problem…
What is gout? Gout is a type of arthritis that is caused by having too much uric acid in the joints. Uric acid is a substance that forms when your body breaks down a substance called purines. Uric acid usually dissolves in your blood and passes through your kidneys into your urine. In people with gout, uric acid builds up and forms sharp crystals that can collect around the joints. This causes pain and swelling in the affected joints and it is most prevalent in the foot. It often affects the big toe joint but can affect other joints in the body as well including the ankle.
Men tend to have gout more often than women do, although women are more likely to have gout after the menopause. In addition, some people who eat foods that contain a lot of purines are prone to gout attacks.
alcohol. Foods that are low in purines include dairy foods, bread and cereal, pasta, fruit and vegetables. Drinking plenty of water also reduces the likelihood of crystals forming in the kidneys.
Eating Healthily is the Key There are certain foods that should be avoided if you suffer from gout. These include oily fish, some seafood, offal, meat and yeast extracts such as Marmite and Bovril and

Famous people of the Chilterns: the SheLLeYS
One of the most famous literary couples of the nineteenth century lived for a time in Marlow. Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley had a short and eventful marriage but during this time they both produced some well-loved and enduring work. The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, best known for poems like Ozymandias and To a Skylark, went to Oxford University, from which he was expelled for an atheist publication. The 19 year old Shelley eloped with 16 year old Harriet Westbrook, with whom he had a daughter. In 1814 he left her and ran off to Italy with Mary Godwin, daughter of the political philosopher William Godwin and the ground-breaking feminist and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft. Percy and Mary rented a house next door to Byron on the shores of Lake Geneva. After an evening discussing “the nature of the principle of life”, Mary passed a sleepless night imagining the horrors of ‘creating’ a living creature. Searching for the subject of a good story, she rejoiced: “I have found it! What terrified me will terrify others; and I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow.” In 1816, after their return to England, Harriet Westbrook drowned herself in the Serpentine and Percy and Mary promptly married. The couple came to Marlow, in Buckinghamshire, and set up home at Albion House in West Street. In this elegant setting beside the broad and placid Thames, Mary completed Frankenstein, recapturing the horrors conceived amongst the rugged backdrop of the Alps. Whilst in Marlow she also edited their continental journal
published as A History of a Six Weeks Tour. Percy, meanwhile, was working on The Revolt of Islam and revolutionary Mary Shelley tracts written under the name of ‘The Hermit of Marlowe’. In 1818 the Shelleys moved to Italy and in 1822 Percy was drowned while sailing, in a sudden storm. Mary returned to London to devote herself to compiling and publishing her husband’s work. Albion House, now named Shelley Cottages, is a private house but is marked by a plaque. It is included in the Marlow Society’s Marlow Town Walk: www.marlowsociety.org.uk This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Recruiting On Call firefighters
Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service are recruiting On Call firefighters.
Most On Call firefighters are based in rural areas and will crew one or two appliances at a solely On Call fire station. However, some are based in urban areas on stations alongside wholetime crews. Some On Call firefighters also crew special appliances such as hydraulic platforms, water carriers, operational support units and off-road vehicles. On Call fire crews can be called upon to attend the full range of incidents including fires, floods, road traffic collisions, chemical spills and more, and work alongside their wholetime colleagues at many incidents.
