Editors’ Letter Welcome to the July/August Issue of Chiltern View Risborough area magazine. It’s Festival time in Princes Risborough and the festivities begin on July 4th with the fantastic Casino Night (see page 61). There are a large number of events happening throughout the week, with many local community organisations and businesses taking part. We are proud to have been asked to put the Festival programme together again this year on behalf of the committee. We would like to thank them for their help and support, as well as all the businesses that placed adverts, to produce what we hope you will consider an interesting

and detailed guide to a very exciting and busy week. The programmes have been printed and will be delivered with the magazines from the weekend of the 20th/21st so make sure you look out for it and keep it as a guide for the week. We are also pleased to be promoting Towersey Festival (see pages 24 and 25) once again, a fabulous event right on our doorstep with something musical and entertaining to suit all ages. As if that were not enough, our Community pages are bursting with truly local events, clubs and societies with something for everyone. We do hope you all have a lovely summer.

Until the next time...

Anyone can use our bus, young and old, and a recent passenger survey gave us a 100% satisfaction rating. Our trained volunteer drivers are well thought of: “these drivers are the most helpful I have been served by for 44 years” said a passenger recently.

Over 20,000 passengers a year now use our “little green bus” that runs daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services around Princes Risborough and to outlying villages. Drop-off for passengers is in the High Street. Most journeys cost only £1.50 or 50p for children and most concessionary passes are accepted.

We make the bus available for use by non-profit making organisations and groups when not on scheduled service and we run outings each month to places of interest. Available on the Bus: £3.50 each or 3 for £10

Are You Ready To Reinvent Yourself? by Kate McLelland

When you reach middle age it’s natural to look back over your life and make a mental tick-list of the things you have, or haven’t, achieved. This in turn often kick starts a realisation that it’s time to start a new page. There may be a number of reasons for this decision: your children may have flown the nest, your job may have ceased to interest you and your relationship has probably become a little stale. It’s understandable to want a complete change, but you should be aware that it takes courage and effort – not to mention a reasonable amount of money – to make a major readjustment. Before you take any action you should consider the three ‘Rs’ that can help you decide if you’re ready to face the next chapter. Resilience: when people launch themselves into a dramatic new way of life, few actually stop to consider whether they are emotionally ready to do so. If you lack resilience then new routines, different faces and unfamiliar places can leave you feeling anxious and depressed, rather than revitalised. How do I know if I have resilience? Ask yourself how you have coped with similar changes before. Do you enjoy new beginnings? Do you like meeting new people and facing new challenges? If the answer is yes, then you’ll probably be fine. Reliance: the old expression “Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater” says it all where reliance is concerned. While turning your back on unsuccessful relationships or dead-end jobs can be a positive move, things can quickly fall apart if you cut yourself off completely from the old life you have known. When you move to that new job or new place, make sure you have a support 14

network in place to help if you encounter any unexpected problems along the way. What does ‘reliance’ mean in practice? You don’t have to be needy, asking for help at every twist and turn of your new journey, but neither should you be too proud to ask for help if you need it. Successful re-inventors strike a balance between independence and knowing when to call on others for help. Renewal: perhaps the hardest part, when it comes to facing a major change in our lives, is letting go of some of the roles we have played for years. That includes informal roles such as full-time mother, husband or wife just as much as the professional job titles we’ve relied on for our self-esteem. Even leaving a destructive relationship can lead to a feeling of loss or vacancy in our lives: it may have been a negative influence but the relationship provided a structure that is now missing. How should I handle renewal? Reacquaint yourself with the person behind the ‘label’: this is your time to be who you really are – don’t allow yourself to be defined by others and be confident that the life skills you’ve built up over the years will help you move on successfully. As Shakespeare said: “The readiness is all.” Change can be great, but don’t underestimate the emotional (and financial) impact of a big upheaval in your life. However, if you’ve made careful plans and can anticipate how you’ll cope with the challenges ahead, there’s every chance you’ll go on to enjoy a successful new life.

Strawberry Shortcake Tarts Serves 6, Ready in 45 mins, plus cooling time Make the most of sweet and juicy British strawberries with these divine fruit tarts. If you don’t have time to make the pastry cream then use fresh ready-made custard or just top with sweetened whipped cream. 2. Sift the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, egg and enough milk to make a soft dough. 3. Divide the dough into six equal pieces and, using floured hands, press each piece of dough into the base and up the sides of a tartlet tin. Place the tins on the hot baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until risen and golden brown. Cool in the tins for 15 minutes then turn out and leave to cool completely. 4. To make the pastry cream, beat together the eggs, flour, caster sugar and vanilla extract. Pour the milk into a small pan and heat the milk to almost boiling point then whisk into the egg mixture. Return the mixture to the pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring all the time, until thickened. Cover the surface with greaseproof tip: paper and leave to cool completely. Stornoway

Bellowhead

After celebrating 50 years in style last year, Towersey Festival returns with another unbeatable line-up of entertainment this August Bank Holiday. Headlining the four-day festival (Friday 28 to Monday 31 August) are Joan Armatrading, Bellowhead and Stornoway. Currently in the middle of a lengthy sell-out solo world tour, singer-songwriter Joan’s many hits include Willow, Down To Zero, My Myself I and the enduring Love And Affection. Though no strangers to Towersey, folk big band Bellowhead will be making one of their last major appearances at the festival before their Farewell Tour in the autumn. Named one of the UK’s best live acts by DJs Simon Mayo and Chris Evans, the rowdy 11-piece will be joined by Oxfordshire’s very own Stornoway, whose acclaimed new album, Bonxie, combines baroque indie folk pop with birdsong. Also on the bill are Sally Barker, whose moving performance on BBC One’s The Voice moved Tom Jones to tears, Show Of Hands, Scottish collective Treacherous Orchestra, Aussies The Spooky Men’s 24

Chorale, hotly tipped Keston Cobblers’ Club, and dozens of award-winners, including The Askew Sisters (winner of Spiral Earth’s Trad Folk Award 2015), Gaelic Singer Of The Year Mischa Macpherson, and Rob Heron And The Tea Pad Orchestra (The Americana Music Association’s UK Americana Band 2015). With the move to Thame Showground, organisers are making several improvements, including better site access and many new features. But they’ve also promised to retain all the elements visitors love about the festival, including the hugely popular Children’s Festival and Shooting Roots, an extensive workshop programme (from morning yoga to singing), exciting theatre and circus acts, and a range of top craft and gift stalls. You can also enjoy some great gourmet street food, from noodles and nachos to chips and cakes, while the bars will be stocking a range of artisan

beers and ciders from the best regional independent breweries. The Showground Bar also features a varied four-day music programme, courtesy of Thame’s very own First Thursday Music Club. Now 51 years old, Towersey Festival is looking (and sounding) better than ever! Frozen Shoulder

If you are experiencing shoulder pain it could be that you are developing Frozen Shoulder. This painful condition presents as a severe aching in the shoulder and upper arm, with limitation of ALL shoulder movements. In extreme cases there is complete rigidity of the joint and there will often be a history of gradual or spontaneous onset. Pain is usually worse at night and the restriction of movement can interfere with everyday tasks such as dressing or driving, meaning that this condition can often have repercussions for our everyday life.

In a Frozen Shoulder the capsule of the shoulder can sometimes form adhesions due to inflammation. The inflammation can then spread through the rest of the soft tissues leading to loss of power and co-ordination within the shoulder muscles. The most common muscles affected are called the rotator cuff, which normally act to stabilise and rotate the shoulder. More women than men present with Frozen Shoulder and some systemic illnesses such as Diabetes or Cardiovascular disease might also increase the risk of developing a frozen shoulder. Many patients seek out non-invasive treatment

and hands-on Osteopathic treatment is beneficial for improving mobility and optimizing muscle function. The Osteopaths at The Luxton Clinic are frequently treating Frozen Shoulder and Rotator Cuff injuries with significant results. Left to resolve naturally it can take up to 2 years.

Vets Corner

Now that the warm weather is here, long dog walks and holidays beckon. It can be very easy to forget about the dog in the back of the car when stopping on the way back from a walk to pop into the shops, or when stopping to refuel on a longer drive. Sometimes these short stops can inadvertently turn into longer stops. In hot weather, even when parked in the shade, cars heat up incredibly quickly.

32

Opening just one window a small amount is not sufficient to negate this heating effect. In very hot conditions, even having windows fully open may not be sufficient. Dogs are not able to lose heat as well as we can due to their thick coats, they can only lose heat by panting, which is very inefficient, and a small amount by sweating from their pads. Signs of heatstroke include vigorous panting; dark red, dry/tacky gums, collapse and unconsciousness. Prompt veterinary treatment is essential but unfortunately many dogs will not survive

this condition and in others it can cause long term damage to organs. If concerned about your animals, please call Sprinz & Nash. Vets are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dr Aurelia Verdin BVetMed MRCVS

Brand new 4x4 will provide improved emergency response

Risboro Garage in Princes Risborough has handed over a brand new Honda CRV 4x4 emergency vehicle to the Princess Risborough Community First Responders (CFR) team. The official handover of the vehicle took place on Friday 10 April at Princes Risborough Golf Club. Mark Tubb, Chairman of the Rural Community Defibrillation Group (RCDG) thanked Risboro Garage directors Sean Graham and Tim Stevens for their generous gift, which will significantly improve the responsiveness and capabilities of the team. It was a landmark day for the CFR group, established five years ago and now made up of a team eight volunteers. CFR team member Geoff Clark explained how

important the addition of a brand new emergency vehicle 4x4 vehicle is for the team and the community, he said: “A 4x4 will gives us greater access in all weathers and terrain. But most importantly, it enables us to carry Entonox (gas and air), a vital pain relief

which can only be carried in vehicles which are insured through the ambulance service, in this case, South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS).” Derek Flint from SCAS explained that the idea to provide a vehicle was first raised in February this year and normally the process from idea to operation takes over a year. However, in this case the vehicle had been ordered, delivered and handed over fully operational in just two months - an impressive achievement by Risboro Garage. Francesca Skelton, attending the event in her new role as High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, praised the CFRs for their vital work in rural and vulnerable communities and for easing the burden on demand of the local ambulance service.

In March this year, the Princes Risborough team recorded 413 hours on call and attended 32 emergencies, in many cases arriving at the scene before the ambulance crew. Up to the end of March this year, the team recorded 2,670 hours on call, attended 214 calls and manned shifts from 7pm to 7am on 138 occasions. RCDG in partnership with Risboro Garage and Princes Risborough Golf Club aims to install defibrillators into local villages to ensure that the level of response in life-saving emergencies is quicker in saving and preserving lives. So far they have installed four ‘Public Access’ defibrillators at sites across the in Princes Risborough area one each at Risborough Golf Club, Lacey Green Village Hall, Bledlow Ridge Village Hall, Speen Village Shop together with an additional one at Haddenham Library. with a further three already purchased to be installed at Bledlow Village, Village Hall , Princes Risborough Fire Station and Princes Risborough Police Station. Sites planned include Bradenham and Hampden each costing £1,500. Defibrillators are very easy to use. Although they don’t all look the same, they all function in broadly the same way.If you come across someone who is not breathing or breathing erratically, the most important thing is to call 999 and start CPR. If you’re on your own, don’t interrupt the CPR to go and get a defibrillator. When you can, send someone else to find one. Once the defibrillator is open, all you have to do is follow the spoken instructions. And Breathe... Cartoon by: Henck and the CBT Partnership in Hertfordshire.

The basic premise of mindfulness is not difficult. It does not require expensive equipment, particular clothing or to focus attention on improbably balanced pebbles in a stack. It simply requires noticing. That’s it. Just noticing. We might notice the coolness of breath when we breathe in. Or the relative warmth of the breath when we exhale. It might involve noticing how a sip of a drink tastes or how it feels in the body to experience tiredness or anxiety. It does require us to slow down, step away from constantly doing something to just savouring ‘being’ instead. The trouble is, the mind does not give up being in control without a fight! If you try just for one minute to focus on, say, the sensation of breathing, the chances are that your mind will quickly wander off to think about that email to send, the grass that needs cutting, or just a sneaky suspicion that this all feels a little indulgent and you should really be making better use of your time and doing something!

40

Mindfulness Chilterns run 8 week courses in Princes Risborough and Maidenhead which support people to gently build up practices; not only help to rekindle some ‘joie de vivre’ but also to deal with the trials and difficulties that are inevitable in all our lives. The next courses start at the beginning of September on Mondays – one in the morning and one in the evening. Take a look at our website for a booking form, more information and some testimonies from people who have completed the course. Or, come along to our Summer Taster session on 23rd July – see advert or website for more details and email Jane to book a place.

So, ‘being mindful’ takes practice. And then some more practice. But, if you keep at it, you might start to notice some changes. First, you might start to notice things around you, the blossom on the trees on your drive to work. Or, it might be that you can happily let things go that used to bother you or upset your day. You might notice that you’re sleeping better, smiling more and just, well, a little bit happier.

‘And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow’ Yeats.

Mindfulness can be learned from one of the many books published on the subject, on your own, at home but an easier way to discover the benefits is to join in with a group of other people with the same intentions and challenges as yourself on a mindfulness course.

“Before I studied mindfulness, I never felt that I had enough hours in the day, I was always feeling stressed. Now I feel as if I have rediscovered extra time, just by being more ‘present’ in the moment.”

Romeo, your puppy update

of Dipper at home is great for Romeo too, as he wants as many friends as he can find. Romeo is getting lots of experience of different environments and he has been on a number of town visits, recently settling contentedly for an hour with his toy under the lunch table on a visit to Malton.

Hearing dogs – the next generation Romeo was born on 11 October 2014. He is a brown miniature poodle, one of the breed types commonly used by the Charity as they respond well to the particular demands of life as a hearing dog.

The journey begins At nine weeks old, Romeo started the first stage in his journey towards becoming a qualified hearing dog and entered his socialising phase. He went to stay with his volunteer socialiser, Joyce, who lives in Yorkshire with her husband Ralph and their own dog, Dipper. Joyce says that Romeo is a cheeky, energetic dog who, although he is still very young, is keen to please. He is a happy puppy who loves to play – running figures of eight around the lounge to show how happy he is!

Off to school Romeo attends puppy classes at Hearing Dogs’ northern training centre at Bielby and in the woods nearby where trainer Amie always has a fresh challenge for the pups. Early training with Joyce is going well: Romeo sits and stands very well, and is good with his ‘wait’. Joyce says this is particularly helpful when she is trying to get dressed and Romeo will now wait rather than making off with her socks! As he is still very young Romeo hasn’t taken any of his Kennel Club Star assessments but he is almost ready for his Hearing Dogs One Star, which means practising basic obedience skills.

What’s next for Romeo? Romeo will continue attending puppy classes where the difficulty of his training will be increased and he will learn to deal with more complex and potentially distracting situations.

Romeo’s fur is long and fluffy at the moment. Joyce says his feet are like four mops! And she’s also looking forward to seeing his ‘inner poodle’ emerge.

In the next few weeks, our team will assess him to get a better idea of how he’ll get on in his future training to become a hearing dog and the sort of environment where he might be most at ease.

Other dogs really like Romeo. He encourages dogs to run around with him, even if they don’t normally want to play. Having the company

Thank you so much for supporting Romeo’s training, and we’ll keep you up to date with all of his news in his next update.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Rosie, I’m a 3 year old medium sized Mixed Breed. I am a fun and energetic girl & would like owners who will continue my training as I would benefit from extra mental stimulation. I can get a little over excited but using positive reward training I am learning not to mouth & bite my lead.

If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

I will need lots of exercise and owners that won’t leave me on my own for too long as I love human company. I may be able to live with another dog & perhaps even a cat. I would like any children in my new home to be aged 14 years and over

Lavender

If there is one family of plants that really do epitomise the English summer garden it is Lavender. An evergreen, easy to grow highly aromatic plant that encourages butterflies and bees, Lavender really does tick all the boxes. A reliable winner in either containers or the soil, the key to success is to provide a well-drained, gritty, free-draining base when planting. If your soil is a tad heavy, add some horticultural grit prior to planting - if you are using a container go for a soil based John Innes Number 3 compost. The two most popular varieties are Hidcote and Munstead. Both are compact reliable cultivars that are particularly successful when used as hedging plants, and grow to around 60cm high. Another traditional variety is Stoechas. This is a French Lavender, an early blooming choice that will fill your garden with a rich scent. One of my favourites is Papillon, with its fine strongly aromatic grey/green leaves, the dark purple flowers have long bracts at the top of the flower heads. Planted in a group, this variety really does look outstanding. 50

Other reliable choices are Dutch, Vera,Sawyers, Lady and Tiara. The varieties above are fully hardy and will comfortably cope with a Princes Risborough winter, even the snow and frost of a severe winter. There are however, a number of Lavenders that are half hardy at best. These tend to be particularly showy and scented. But, to get the best of such selections as Pinnata, Sky and Christiana, it is advised to grow them in containers. They are more than happy outside from May to October, but will need bringing in to a frost free environment to survive the winter . Lavender really does need good regular pruning to get the best from the plant. A lot of gardeners will happily plant their varieties out and see them flower away during the

first season, then leave them to their own devices. This is a mistake, as without pruning Lavender will become very woody and lose all its energy. The obvious solution to this problem is to cut the plant hard back to encourage new growth - but this is wrong. Lavender will not come again from this kind of treatment. The answer is to prune a little and often. Let the plant flower in midsummer, then once the flowers fade, trim the plant back leaving neat compact foliage. Once the worst of the winter weather has gone, around April time, give Lavender another trim. If you do this, your plants will continue to give you flowers and fragrance for years to come. Happy gardening! Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell

and all at Askett Nurseries.

Risborough Good Neighbours Risborough Good Neighbours is a volunteer scheme run to help people get to medical appointments. For the people of Risborough and local villages it is a lifeline. It enables people without transport to keep all kinds of medical appointments. Unfortunately, because of a lack of volunteers this scheme is in danger of having to cease operating. We desperately need telephone coordinators, who arrange the trips, and drivers who undertake to take people and return them home afterwards. Telephone calls can be charged for and drivers get the maximum rate allowed of 45p per mile. Nobody is tied to any particular time, each trip is arranged individually. Please help this worthwhile scheme to continue. The vital number is 01844 342600, available from 9.00am – 4.30pm. If you feel willing to offer or wish to enquire about the service please phone Val Young 01844 345503.
