Editors’ Letter Welcome to the September/ October Issue of Chiltern View Risborough area magazine. We have lots of editorial in this issue and it’s clear that Risborough has a thriving community with many interesting and exciting events going on. September always brings Kop Hill to Princes Risborough of course and this year is all set to be even better than the last. We have dedicated the centre spread to this popular event as there is so much to tell you about. Even if you aren’t a keen motor enthusiast then it is well worth going along to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy all the events.
an Coralie & J
We have a new travel article to give you food for thought when you book your next holiday (page 30); A piece about the Chiltern Brewery and one of their recent awards (page 40); An Abba Tribute Night for the Chinnor Village Hall (page 24) and a fantastic editorial about an exciting new venture for Risborough Rangers with their new Junior Football Club Disability Team and celebrity patron (see page 36). Please don’t forget our competitions as well. A new crossword one that has a tricky clue, which we can’t wait to see if people can crack, and Aylesbury Theatre who we think have one of the best Autumn line ups of shows that you could get to see for free, so make sure you enter!
Until the next time...

Good Neighbours
Reignite your community spirit. That’s the message to Bucks residents for the launch of the Good Neighbours Project. The campaign, led by Community Impact Bucks aims to improve community cohesion by reconnecting communities and encouraging more interaction between local people. The charity is offering free support to any village or community that wishes to start a ‘Good Neighbours’ project in their area. Schemes are designed around the unique needs of each group but typically comprise a team of volunteers who can run errands and perform basic DIY and gardening tasks for local residents. Service Manager at Community Impact Bucks, Ian Hopper, says there is a growing need for support of this kind:
‘As public sector funding continues to reduce services, local communities are facing increasing pressure to do more for themselves, but this can only happen when relationships between residents are strong. People are increasingly living parallel lives - The Good Neighbours Project is all about reversing that trend and helping communities set up their own self-sustaining support system’ As the Volunteer Centre for Buckinghamshire, Community Impact Bucks can also provide a range of volunteering opportunities for individuals who wish to support specific communities or charities. For more information call 0300 1111 250 or email info@communityimpactbucks.org.uk

Recipe of the Month
Caramel Apple Sponge Bake Makes 9 squares, Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes This delicious moist sponge makes a perfect pudding for a special lunch. Serve warm or cold with ice cream or a spoonful of tangy crème fraiche. Ingredients: • 100g granulated sugar • 4 tbsp cold water • 2 dessert apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced • 200g self-raising flour • tsp baking powder • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 200g caster sugar • 200g unsalted butter, softened • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten • 3-5 tbsp milk • Icing sugar, to dust • Scoops of vanilla ice cream and lemon balm sprigs, to serve tip: Replace the apple slices with peeled and sliced pears or try peeled and segmented oranges for a lovely citrus flavoured dessert. Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, Gas 4. Grease a 23cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and two sides with a baking paper. 20
2. Put the granulated sugar and water in a heavybased saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the syrup to the boil and continue boiling, without stirring, until the syrup has turned to a golden caramel. 3. Carefully pour the hot caramel into the base of the prepared tin. Arrange the apples slices over the caramel (don’t worry if the caramel has set). 4. Sift the flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a large bowl and add the caster sugar, butter and eggs. Using a hand-held electric whisk, beat the mixture for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy. Whisk in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency. 5. Spoon the mixture over the apples and gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until the sponge is golden and springy to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. 6. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes then carefully lift it out of the tin using the baking paper up the two sides of the tin. Cut into 9 squares and serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar. Top each square with scoop of ice cream and decorate with a sprig of lemon balm.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Oscar, I’m a 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier type. I am a sweet boy who loves being with people. I don’t mind dogs out & about but I don’t like to share my personal space so I am looking for a home with no other dogs.
If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.
I would like some more training as I only really know how to sit, but I love treats so training should be fun. I cannot live with another dog but possibly with a cat and would like any children in my new home to be aged 7 years and over.

Lovell Fuels are approaching their 2nd year anniversary!
Although the business is young, the heritage goes back a long way – Simon’s grandparents and parents operated from the same premises back in 1972 as H. W. Lovell and Son. Simon was brought up in the family business, but after his father passed away in 1999, and his mum retired a couple of years later, the business was sold. In 2013, Simon decided to start up the family firm again with his wife Suzanne and the two began building the family business back up, with Suzanne manning the office while Simon did the deliveries.

“I didn’t feel ready to take the business on when my mum sold up but I stayed within the oil industry, and one of my ideas was to buy my own little tanker and I started doing pump outs for people and third party deliveries over winter months. Everyone I met spoke fondly of Lovells and how they missed the fast and personal service, and quality of care. “We are sticking to our philosophy of fair pricing, and doing what we say we’re going to do and not letting people down. When someone runs
out of oil and we can help them out, they are genuinely grateful and it’s very satisfying.” Lovell Fuels deliver within a 25 mile radius of Long Crendon, supplying homes, farms and businesses. For domestic heating oil, agricultural diesel, oil tanks or oil tank security, check out the website www.lovellfuels.co.uk or call 01844 202777.

Planting in the Autumn
Autumn is traditionally the time for major planting. The soil is still warm from the summer heat and there is always a strong possibility of rain to keep the plants moist. This is the time to get around to planting that hedge, those trees, roses, fruit bushes and shrubs. If you are thinking of planting a long hedge, container grown hedging plants such as Laurel, Holly, Conifer and Privet will make this quite an expensive project, but you will get immediate good sized results . The plants will be around 4 years old in something like a 3 litre pot and be 2 to 3 feet high. The alternative is to use bare rooted hedging plants. Beech, Quickthorn and Dog Rose are perhaps the most popular choices. These will be much cheaper, but bear in mind these plants will be much smaller than their container grown counterparts, so therefore you will need considerably more plants. Another factor to take on board when using bare 32
root plants is that we have found you will always get some failures that will need replacing. If you do go down the bare root path you will have to be patient, as they will only be available from late Autumn as they are not pulled until the cold weather arrives and they become dormant, so if we have a warm mild Autumn as we did last year, you may not get your plants until well into November. Don’t be disappointed when they do arrive, as on first glance they will just look like a bundle of sticks! If you are not planning to plant immediately, make sure you heel them into a nursery bed. The last thing you want is for the frost to get to the roots as this will kill the plants, and you will not discover this until the Spring. It is the same story regarding trees, roses and soft fruit. Container grown specimens will be much more mature than the bare rooted ones on offer - it is very much down to you - if you want instant results, then you will have to bite the bullet and pay the extra, if you are happy to wait, then go for bare root. The procedure for planting is the same for whatever you choose. Pick a sunny dry day and dig down to around twice the size of the pot, or a deep
trench for bare root. Use a stake or canes for support then add bonemeal and compost to the roots, backfill, then mulch with something like composted bark to retain moisture and protect the plant from severe frosts. Keep an eye on your newly planted stock over the winter. Make sure the wind doesn’t rock the roots or rabbits gnaw away at the bark, and top up with mulch as and when needed. If you’d like some advice regarding Autumn planting, just drop in and one of us will point you in the right direction. See you soon, happy gardening!

Kop Hill Climb - 2015
Would you like to spend a day or two in the rolling Chiltern Hills amongst hundreds of outstanding vintage, classic and modern vehicles and motorcycles? Perhaps spend time with the family taking in the sights and sounds of the Paddock whilst fundraising for the local community? Well you can on the 19th and 20th September when Kop Hill Climb returns for the revival of the original event, which takes place annually in Princes Risborough, and is now in its seventh year. During that time it has grown into an internationally recognised weekend for enthusiasts and families alike, and attendance figures have climbed steadily each year, topping 15,000 in 2014. This is great news for local charities, which benefitted last year from £48,500 in donations.

An amazing crowd puller in 2013, the Napier-Railton from Brooklands Museum will appear on Saturday 19th. This huge 24 litre, two-ton goliath is a sight to behold. With a top speed of 165mph plus, it should have no trouble in taking on the famous hill. New for 2015, the
1922 Isle of Man TT winning Sunbeam Grand Prix car, will appear on Sunday 20th. Choosing Kop Hill Climb for its first street legal appearance in the UK is the VUHL 05 lightweight supercar. The allcarbon bodywork weighs a mere 695kg, with 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds and top speed of over 150mph. Go to www. vuhlautomotive.com to fully appreciate this remarkable car. Kop Hill Climb is thrilled to play host to a vintage steam fair, and centre stage will be a 50ft high helter-skelter - perfect for gaining a good vantage point of the whole event. Back by popular demand are Haurel and Lardy, recreating the legendary double act and bringing with them this year none other than…. Charlie Chaplin! Enter if you dare the Wall of Death, entertaining the crowds since the 1920’s in a thrilling display of skill.

You’ve seen them on the BBC now experience it in real life. Kop Hill is one of the oldest Hill Climb venues in England. The first recorded races were in 1910. It became a major event on the motorsports car and motorcycle calendar and many famous drivers and riders of the time, including Malcolm Campbell, Raymond Mays, Henry Seagrave and Count Zborowski raced up the hill. The last event was in 1925, when as a result of an accident to a spectator, the RAC banned all motorsport on public roads. Today Kop Hill is a public road, and is closed to traffic during the event. The objective of the Kop Hill Climb revival is to raise money for local charities. All the organising team and helpers are volunteers, and the event is managed as a part of the Heart of Bucks Community Foundation. Over £240,000 has been raised since the revival started in 2009. Come and be a part of this very special event, and help local community projects and charities. Advance tickets are available now. Visit our website: www.kophillclimb.org.uk for ticket details and information on the event. Booking in advance guarantees your admission and avoids possible queues at the entrance. Risborough Rangers
BBC sports presenter, patron of Risborough Rangers Junior F.C. Disability team, invites you to come along for a free ‘taster’ session. Mike Bushell, the well-known BBC Breakfast TV and Radio 2 sports presenter, has become the Patron of a local pan-disability (PD) football team for boys and girls aged 7 to 11. “This is a truly inspirational initiative by Risborough Rangers! The players all have wide smiles on their faces throughout the session and it is a joy to watch them participate in a sport that hitherto was not possible for them to be involved in. This is real ‘inclusivity in sport’ and I am delighted to become their Patron – to support and encourage them as they develop, and to bring the game to many others in the future,” said Mike Bushell. The team has players with a range of physical and learning disabilities including autism (ASD), ADHD, Down’s syndrome, global development delay and muscular dystrophy. They are children that, in the main, are unable to join in able-bodied football and may also include those with cerebral palsy, a hearing or sight impairment, restricted growth or amputations: unfortunately it does not include those that are blind or in a wheelchair. “We’re extremely pleased to have Mike Bushell as our Patron - his involvement further reinforces the fantastic support that we have already

Two other parents - a Dad and a Mum - are now also well on the way to their Level 1 coaching qualification. The benefits to the players are many including greater social interaction, confidence building, physical activity, fitness and coordination, stimulation, communication skills, control, learning and team participation. The parents and their families also benefit not only from a degree of respite during sessions, but also from their child’s real enthusiasm and all round level of fun and enjoyment that is very plain to see. New players are invited to come along for a ‘Free Taster’ session which are held every Saturday morning 9.30 -10.30am in the indoor sports hall at The Community Centre, Wades Park, Stratton Road, Princes Risborough HP27 9AX . Putting Feet First...
“Foot Attack” is part of a campaign which was launched by Diabetes UK in 2012 called Putting Feet First. The aim of the campaign is to prevent diabetes related amputations of the foot, toes or lower limb. Each week in England there are around 130 amputations in people with Diabetes and the majority are caused by a “foot-attack” - a foot ulcer or infection failing to heal. 4 out of 5 of these amputations are preventable. Diabetes UK have put forward some top tips to help people with Diabetes look after their feet:
• Make sure you attend an annual foot review with a diabetic nurse or qualified podiatrist. • Be aware of any loss of sensation in your feet. Don’t go barefoot and avoid extremes in temperature if you have impaired sensation. • Look after your toenails. If you have difficulty cutting your nails make an appointment with a qualified podiatrist. • Avoid using corn plasters or blades. These may damage your skin. • Always wear good fitting shoes.

Top award for John Hampden’s bottled Golden Harvest ale
The Chiltern Brewery’s John Hampden’s Golden Harvest Ale 4.8% vol has won the Best Bottled IPA category at this year’s Farm Produce Awards organized by top national food magazine title, Great British Food. All entries were initially short-listed based on the producer’s commitment to provenance and local souring, then taste tested by a panel of some of the top names in British food, including Nathan Outlaw, Rosemary Shrager, Valentine Warner and Richard Corrigan. The final winner in the Best Bottled IPA category was selected by renowned
beer writer and beer sommelier Sophie Atherton. Her favourable comments included “This beer managed to draw me in by having the best aroma of all the finalists. Dried, fruity flavours are not normally associated with IPAs but here they led to a dry, spicy and peppery hoppy finish - in a pleasantly astringent beer. Most importantly I wanted to drink more!” Golden amber in colour and floral on the nose, John Hampden’s is brewed in the style of a classic harvest ale with premium quality Maris Otter malt and the aromatic fruitiness of only a single famous English hop, Fuggles, for balance.
Head Brewer Tom Jenkinson said “We consider John Hampden’s to be an earl amongst ales - a bottled beer with impeccable pedigree and this is a big accolade: a real honour.” Tel: 01296 613647 Twitter @Chiltern_Brewer www.chilternbrewery.co.uk

Stokenchurch Primary School George Road Stokenchurch Buckinghamshire HP14 3RN
Headteacher: Mr A White
Looking for an outstanding school who believes every child can be successful? Stokenchurch Primary is an outstanding school and has been graded as such at two consecutive Ofsted inspections in 2008 and in 2013. We strive to create within each child a feeling for Stokenchurch Primary School whereby he/she will attend eagerly, leave with regret and remember with pride.
‘This very large primary school has established a warm family atmosphere where pupils thrive and develop outstanding behaviour and attitudes. They show respect to everyone and know how to stay safe…each pupil is known and valued as an individual. This is the basis for the very high expectations demonstrated across every aspect of school life.’ Ofsted 2013 Our ethos at the heart of all we do All-round personal development is a well-established feature of the school helping pupils to grow in confidence, whether in learning or in the many excellent opportunities to take on leadership roles, as with the very active school council, prefect and house captain roles and more recent introduction of head boy and head girl posts. Learning through performance – stretching horizons alongside achieving academic excellence ‘Achievement at Stokenchurch is outstanding. Pupils make rapid progress from their starting points, and attain high standards.’ Ofsted 2013 Underpinning pupil achievement we passionately believe in providing a ‘stage’ for pupils (all of whom we believe are talented) to emerge and grow and gain in confidence and stature. ‘The very rich and exciting curriculum (both within the school day and beyond) provides outstanding opportunities for pupils to experience learning in real-life situations and to develop confidence by being involved in prestigious events.’ Ofsted 2013 Why not come along and see for yourself …. th Open Day and Evening: 8 October 2015 (two sessions available) Session 1 (Morning) Session 2 (Evening) 6.00-6.45pm - Tour 9.00-9.45am - Tour 6.45-7.15pm Senior Team led discussion 9.45-10.15am - Senior Team led discussion The Office Team will be delighted to take Open Day bookings and answer any questions you may have. Famous people of the Chilterns: roALd dAhL
The famous writer Roald Dahl, creator of wonderful tales for children and adults, lived in Great Missenden for 30 years. His life was every bit as eventful as his stories. Born in Wales, to Norwegian parents, his father died when he was three and it was his mother who first fired his imagination, with tales of Norwegian trolls. At 18 he joined an expedition to Newfoundland, then went to work for Shell in Africa. When war broke out he signed up for the RAF, serving in Libya, Greece and Syria. He rose to the rank of Wing Commander in a career in which he crashed, was wounded and shot down. Dahl was then posted to British Intelligence in Washington where, it is said, his success as a ladies’ man outshone James Bond. Fittingly, Dahl wrote the script of the 1970 Bond movie You Only Live Twice and also scripted the film of Ian Fleming’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – for which the windmill scenes were filmed in the Chilterns at Turville, near Hambleden. Roald Dahl’s writing career began in earnest when he met C S Forester, of Captain Hornblower fame, who was to write up Dahl’s war experiences for Washington’s Saturday Evening Post. On receipt of Dahl’s notes about the war, Forester replied: “Did you know you were a writer? I haven’t changed a word.” Dahl began writing for children when he had a family of his own. In 1960 he settled at Gipsy House in Great Missenden. Sitting in his garden hut, in a battered armchair with a board across his knees, he wrote the Angling spring Wood

stories that made him, at one time, the best-selling children’s author in the world. Roald Dahl Roald Dahl died Photo by: Carl of a rare blood van Vechten disease in 1990, age 74, and was buried in the cemetery of Great Missenden parish church. Some years later, the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre was established in Great Missenden’s village high street to inspire 6 – 12 year olds with a love of writing and to tell the story of Dahl’s life and work. There are self-guided trails from the Museum to see some of the features around Great Missenden which were included in Dahl’s stories. The library is the one frequented by Matilda while her mother played bingo in Aylesbury. Outside the village is Angling Spring Wood where Dahl took many walks and which was the inspiration for Fantastic Mr Fox. There is an audio Talking Trail for the Wood which can be downloaded from www.chiltern. gov.uk/anglingspringwoods This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £2.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Home Buddy
Hello, My name is Sarah Ludlow and I am the wife of Stuart who runs Garden Buddy. Many of you already know him as you very kindly let him loose in your Gardens.
Let me introduce myself… I am venturing out on a very exciting project. I am starting the sister company to Garden Buddy… my company is Home Buddy. Let’s bring Downton Abbey to the 21st Century. My past employment history includes managing three large Private Country Estates. They are in Arundel, Hungerford and Dorset. My job roles included all aspects of Housekeeping, right down to cleaning the family silver! I would make sure all servicing for boilers was carried out on time, oil was ordered, coal and wood was in plentiful supply for the winter fires. Chimney sweeping was arranged, swimming pools cleaned and maintained, as well as arranging for the tennis courts to be kept in good condition. There would always be lots to do when guests came to stay. Rooms to present to high standards, menus to be arranged, shopping to be got and then cooking for anything up to 20 dinner guests. The tables would be laid with gleaming crystal and silver, beautiful starched linens, candles and flowers. This was my favourite part of the work. I would also arrange and employ extra staff for bigger events. Chefs, Butlers and Waiting staff… I love to bake and prepare lovely home cooked meals. Brilliant if you work all day, to come home and just pop something in the oven to warm through! Great if you have guests round as they think you did it all yourself! I also book in cars for servicing and mot… A job nobody likes to do! I’m a real animal lover and in the past have had my own pets and looked after many others. I love to dog walk, and will even take them to the vets for you! Feeding and administration of medicine also done. I have also worked out in the community as an HCA and more recently at a local Hospice. I love people and always try to make them feel better and smile. If you know anyone who 48
would benefit from some company, then I could help. I have my First Aid certificate, Moving and Handling, Safeguarding Adults and Food Hygiene. I have been DBS checked several times too. I have full insurance.
No home or job too big or small…
If you think I may be of assistance to you then please call me and have a chat. I would love to hear your ideas that you may have yourself! I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you,
Sarah

Vets Corner
As many of you may be aware, from the 6th of April 2016 it will be compulsory for all dogs over the age of 8 weeks to be microchipped and registered. Currently, this applies only to dogs; however we also recommend having your cat microchipped, especially if they go outside. We frequently get stray animals being brought in to us, and microchips enable us to reunite them with their
50
owners – for this reason it is important to ensure you keep the microchip details up to date, cats in particular can go missing for months! Microchipping is also required should you wish to take your pet abroad. Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades. Placing a microchip takes only a few seconds. Each microchip has a unique number which is read by a scanner. This number is linked to you and your pet’s details on a database.
We advise having the microchip scanned once a year to ensure it is functioning correctly. If concerned about your animals, please call Sprinz & Nash. Vets are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dr Aurelia Verdin BVetMed MRCVS

A friendly welcome awaits anyone wanting to join us for social and/or competitive games. Call Jan on 01844 351423 for more information Risborough Good Neighbours Risborough Good Neighbours is a volunteer scheme run to help people get to medical appointments. For the people of Risborough and local villages it is a lifeline. It enables people without transport to keep all kinds of medical appointments. Unfortunately, because of a lack of volunteers, this scheme is in danger of having to cease operating. We desperately need telephone coordinators, who arrange the trips, and drivers who undertake to take people and return them home afterwards. Telephone calls can be charged for and drivers get the maximum rate allowed of 45p per mile. Nobody is tied to any particular time, each trip is arranged individually. Please help this worthwhile scheme to continue. The vital number is 01844 342600, available from 9.00am – 4.30pm. If you feel willing to offer or wish to enquire about the service please phone Val Young 01844 345503.
