Editors’ Letter Welcome to the January/ February issue of Chiltern View Risborough magazine. It’s always quite a challenge to put this editorial together because at the point of writing it, it is only the beginning of December and we are yet to have Christmas. As you read this however, all the festivities will be over but we do hope you had a lovely time and are looking forward to the new year ahead. We have many plans for 2016. We are hoping that by now our new look website will be up and running. It should be nice and easy to use and with a real community feel, allowing you to look out for local events and interesting local news that we have published in the magazine. This will all be regularly updated and we hope to link it all in with all our social media sites which are regularly updated by our wonderful colleague Lacey. Please ‘like’ our page at www.facebook.com/ chilternview or follow us on twitter @chilterndirect.
an Coralie & J
We do hope you like the beautiful picture of Waddesdon Manor that they kindly sent across. The house is closed at the moment but the grounds are just stunning and well worth a visit, especially in the snow or frost. Can we take this opportunity to say a huge thanks to Sharon, our distribution manager who does an amazing job; not easy organising deliverers across all 3 of our areas. We would also like to thank each individual deliverer, without whom we would not be able to complete the most important part of the business which is getting the magazines to you, our readers. Finally, we would we like to wish our sister publication (Chiltern View – Villages) a Happy 10th Birthday – we have no idea where those 10 years went, but we are very grateful for all the amazing support that we have had from local businesses and the community.
Until the next time...

Snowdrop Teas at Aston Rowant Church
Fiveways is a small Nature Conservation area managed by Aston Rowant Parish Council who have installed a short path and little bridges over a small chalk stream, with the support of a Sustainability Grant from the Chilterns Conservation Board. There is also a log seat on which Supplied by to relax. The area used to be Alan Gooders an important part of the village until the nineteenth century, with simple farm cottages beside the bridleway. We presume that the lovely snowdrops were originally planted in their gardens. This would have been an important crossing of tracks in the Middle Ages. An important Drovers Trail, the Lower Icknield Way crossed the Old London Weye from London to Oxford here and there were Church Way Footpaths that converged from Postcombe and Kingston Stert. There was water from the stream, wood and flint from the hills, employment on the land, and we also think that there was even a fish pond close by!
Supplied by Chris French
10
The Aston Rowant Parish Council have cleared a lot of dead and diseased shrubs and trees, and these were replaced with new species of small tree and shrubs provided by SSE. The Council have also funded a big planting programme spreading wild flower seeds and planting bulbs, all indigenous species. Winter Aconites and Fritillaria bulbs have been planted on the stream side and English and Welsh Daffodils, Wood Anemones, and English Bluebells have also been added. On Sunday 14th February, from 2pm – 4.30pm, please visit the wonderful snowdrops in Church Lane at Fiveways, Aston Rowant and enjoy scrumptious Tea and Cakes in the church. There will also be duck races along the stream (for which there will be a small charge). Please wear boots or wellies! The event is being organised jointly by the Church and Aston Rowant Parish Council and all profits are for the Church Funds. Viewing the snowdrops is free! Hopefully the Aconites will add some bright yellow flowers at the time of the Snowdrop Sunday. Mike Eaton and Peter Hetherington - for Aston Rowant Parish Council.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director James Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Stokenchurch, Lane End, Ibstone, Studley Green, Beacons Bottom, Cadmore End, Piddington, Downley, West Wycombe, Bledlow Ridge, Aston

Rowant & Lewknor areas and James is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give James a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Vets Corner
There are many potentially poisonous substances in the home. Many dogs like to scavenge and eat things they shouldn’t, so it is good to be aware of some of the more common toxins at home. One toxicity we see a lot of is chocolate (theobromine poisoning) - this can cause problems with the central nervous system, kidneys, and the heart and can be fatal.
20
The higher the cocoa content of the chocolate the more toxic it is to the dog, the size of the dog will also make a difference. Small amounts of grapes/raisins can also cause acute kidney failure, and death in some cases, whilst onions and garlic can cause anaemia. Cats are very sensitive to Lilies (Lilium and Hemerocallis spp.) - all parts, including the pollen, can cause kidney failure which is often fatal. Many potential poisonings can be treated pre-emptively if we know what and how much the animal has eaten, so please call your vet if you
have any concerns that your pet has eaten something it should not have! If concerned about your animals, please call Sprinz & Nash. Vets are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dr Aurelia Verdin BVetMed MRCVS

Recipe of the Month
Lamb & Spinach Curry Serves 4, Ready in 55 minutes This mildly spiced curry thickened with red lentils and spinach will make a refreshing change for a family meal after all the traditional food over the festive season. Serve with a cooling cucumber and mint yoghurt and some warmed naan bread for a really filling mid-week supper. Ingredients: • 2 tbsp oil • 600g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 6 tbsp balti curry paste • 75g red split lentils • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 200g baby spinach leaves • 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander • Boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges to serve tip: For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor! 22
Method: 1. Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way. 2. Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste. 3. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.

Anyone can use our bus, young and old, and a recent passenger survey gave us a 100% satisfaction rating. Our trained volunteer drivers are well thought of: “these drivers are the most helpful I have been served by for 44 years” said a passenger recently.
Over 20,000 passengers a year now use our “little green bus” that runs daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services around Princes Risborough and to outlying villages. Drop-off for passengers is in the High Street. Most journeys cost only £1.50 or 50p for children and most concessionary passes are accepted.
We make the bus available for use by non-profit making organisations and groups when not on scheduled service and we run outings each month to places of interest. Available on the Bus: £3.50 each or 3 for £10

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Marley, I’m a 5 year old Border Collie type. I am deaf and my vision is not 100% but that doesn’t stop me being an affectionate boy – I love to have a fuss & a cuddle. I can be a little anxious in new environments but once I have settled I cope really well. I will need owners who can be patient & understanding. I can live with another dog (this would actually help me adjust & settle in, possibly a cat and would like any children in my new home to be aged 14 years and over.

If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

The Journey Continues…
“Romeo is very affectionate and enthusiastic. He loves work, and he loves life. He’s a great little dog.” This is what Joyce, his volunteer puppy socialiser, thinks about Romeo. She’s one of our most experienced volunteer socialisers, and has been socialising our puppies since 1996. So, she knows what makes a ‘great little dog’! More than any other dog Joyce has socialised, Romeo can get other dogs to play with him. Out in the park, he runs rings around them until they join in. It’s like a magic spell. Everyone exclaims that Romeo has somehow cajoled their dog, who never plays with other dogs, into having a run-around.
Off to Big School Romeo has started basic soundwork training. This is what really makes a hearing dog unique, in that they learn to associate sounds with specific actions, and then alert their deaf recipient to those sounds. He has started learning to run to the cooker timer when it goes off. Deaf people need to be alerted to this sound, to avoid burnt dinners or worse. To do this, Joyce sets the timer for five seconds and when it beeps he runs to it for a treat. She is also teaching him nosenudging. This is how hearing
dogs alert deaf people to other sounds such as the doorbell. Joyce is encouraging him to nudge the palm of her hand, by giving him treats. It’s the beginning of a very important action that Romeo will need to use a lot when he is matched with a deaf recipient.
What’s next for Romeo? Joyce is planning on improving Romeo’s ‘wait’. This is important for when he becomes a hearing dog, because he will need to wait at the side of the road before crossing, at the front door when his deaf recipient answers it, and so on. To do this, Joyce tells him to wait, walks ten paces away from him, turns back round, and holds his attention. Romeo should be able to wait for a minute but his current record is 20 seconds. So, his next small step is going to be about improving his focus and not being so distracted. However, his next big hurdle will be when he leaves Joyce, to start his advanced soundwork training at our centre in Yorkshire. This is where he’ll build on the basic work he’s already done with Joyce, associating more sounds with more actions. And with that, here ends your second update about Romeo, our ‘great little dog’. We hope you have enjoyed reading about him!

At this time of the year, when the days are short and the nights are long, what better time to start to think about some winter sunshine. Chasing the sun and the warmth in winter offers you numerous holiday options - for those of you who prefer a shorter flight, around four and a half hours, the most popular destinations are the Canary Islands - Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. With temperatures averaging 20 degrees and higher this is a wonderful place to visit during the winter months. There is a wide choice of accommodation -
apartments, villas and a choice of 3, 4 and 5 star hotels. The Canaries also boast fine cuisine across all the islands whether it be traditional Spanish tapas or fine worldwide dining. Travelling further afield gives you an amazing choice of destinations - The United Arab Emirates - Dubai in particular not only offers wonderful hotels and amazing man made beaches but for those shopaholics amongst you, you are spoilt for choice. Flights are approximately 7 hours from many UK airports and you enjoy temperatures @ 26 degrees. The best time to travel is October through to April - as you move into summer the temperatures can be as hot as 40 degrees. Another winter destination is the Caribbean - so much choice - pick up a cruise in Miami and visit a variety of islands over 7, 10, 11 or 14 nights. Alternatively fly direct to some of the Caribbean islands direct from the UK Antigua, Barbados and Jamaica for example. Flight times are @ 11 hours so we would recommend a minimum 10 day stay. There are some amazing properties to stay at in the Caribbean - whether you prefer a self catering apartment on the beach or a luxury hotel the choice is
endless. The Caribbean boasts some of the most magnificent beaches where it is often difficult to find another person nearby. Temperatures in the winter are high - the best months really being January through to April. This way you avoid the hurricane season and the tropical rain season. Once you start to travel further afield the holiday choices broaden - Maldives, Mauritius, Mexico to name but three. The winter is a perfect time to take a break - recharge the batteries, avoid some of the UK winter weather, save on those fuel bills! - relax and enjoy the wonders of the world.

Chinnor Neighbourhood Plan A Vision for Chinnor Chinnor Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group is determined to continue developing the Neighbourhood Plan (NP) despite the recent announcements that outline planning permissions have been granted for 200 dwellings to be built in Chinnor following planning appeals made by the developers, Taylor Wimpey and Cemex Ltd. Outline planning permission has been granted by England’s Planning Inspectorate to build 80 homes near Greenwood Meadow and 120 homes near Crowell Road.
Our Task
The Steering Group is tasked with writing a Neighbourhood Plan on behalf of the Chinnor Parish Council for the residents of the Parish 40
of Chinnor. The Plan will give the residents of Chinnor, Henton, Wainhill and Emmington a say in their future as our community grows over the next 15 years. The Plan will ensure that this growth takes place in a sustainable way maintaining our vibrant community, enhancing it and improving it where we can. The most effective way that residents can have some influence on future developments in Chinnor will be to get behind the NP team, responding to the survey, attending consultation events and giving feedback so that work can proceed to produce a robust plan that will pass scrutiny and reach completion as soon as possible. Chinnor Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group can be contacted via: Email: Chinnorneighbourplan@outlook.com Website: www.chinnorneighbourplan.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/ ChinnorNeighbourhoodPlan

New Beginnings
In need of a change in 2016? Whether you want to alter your life’s direction, go travelling, or just be a bit healthier, sometimes you need a little inspiration before you take the plunge. This month’s selection of books features new adventures, new thinking and everyday acts of courage that might well offer just the motivation you need.
The Soup Cleanse
Angela Blatteis and Vivienne Vella If you’re feeling the effects of a Christmas of excess, a detox could help you get back on track. Soups are a great way to get the nutrition you need, while cutting out the ‘junk’. They’re also far more filling than juices, so won’t leave you feeling hungry, and they can be prepared ahead in batches, so work well if you don’t always have time to cook fresh food from scratch. With several detox programmes to choose from, and some truly delicious recipes, The Soup Cleanse could help you to kickstart a healthier 2016.
No Baggage Clara Bensen
A travel memoir with a difference, No Baggage sees 42
Clara travelling through Europe with a man she’s only recently met, no luggage and no fixed plans for where to stay. She’s also only recently overcome the depression that stole two years of her life. Sleeping mainly on strangers’ sofas, the pair get to experience a different side of the countries they visit, and learn more about themselves, and each other, as they go.
One Million Lovely Letters Jodi Ann Bickley
A serious brain infection at 22 left Jodi Ann Bickley so depressed she was close to ending her own life. While re-learning to walk and do basic everyday tasks, Jodi decided to bring hope to other people’s lives by writing letters to strangers. She ended up writing thousands, and now has a team of volunteers, who handwrite letters to people who request them, all over the globe.
The Year Without a Purchase Scott Dannemiller
Tired of the relentless drive for more ‘stuff’, Scott and Gaby Dannemiller decided to take a step away from consumerism and commit to a year without buying anything other than food and other essentials. This book records their experience and what they learned along the way.
The couple are Christian and their religious beliefs played a big part in their decision, as did the desire to spend more meaningful time together as a family. Far from being a self-righteous lecture, it’s laugh out loud funny, and manages to make you think about your own spending habits, without a hint of nagging.
Take Your Soul to Work Erica Brown
Whether you’re a team manager, or the CEO of a multi-national business, leadership can be exhausting. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day minutiae of working life, and forget about the bigger picture. Take Your Soul to Work gives you a daily meditation to help you steer your business in a more compassionate way, and inspire your employees. Read it in order, or dip in and out when you need particular guidance on an area of leadership, from mentoring to discipline.
Coal River
Ellen Marie Wiseman Sometimes small acts of courage can change communities. This historical novel tells the story of the harsh reality of coal mining in the 1900s and Emma, a young woman who decides to take a stand and speak out against child labour. While fictional, much of what Emma witnesses is based on fact, and in many parts of the world her fight is just as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago. Gripping.

Planting in the Autumn
Now we’re into the New Year, we gardeners start to get excited about the forthcoming season. Last year’s disasters - the blighted tomatoes and the clematis that didn’t flower - are forgotten, all we remember are the victories - the delicious strawberries, the sweet peas that gave us glorious colour and scent, and the roses that flowered all summer. This is the year when everything will work out and all our efforts will be rewarded - we’re an optimistic bunch us gardeners! The initial sign that spring in round the corner is the sight of the first Snowdrops (Galanthus) . Most of us are happy with the common Snowdrop or perhaps a double, but there are gardeners who are devoted to the more rare species these folk are ‘galanthophiles’ and will happily travel many miles to see a collection of rare plants, and are willing to pay a fortune for a particular bulb. One such bulb was recently sold for £360! Generally we plant them as a bulb in the autumn. The problem with freshly planted bulbs is that they are small, 44
and expensive, and can easily rot away in a wet winter, or be dug up by squirrels or other wildlife. The best way to ensure you have a thriving show for years to come is to plant them now ‘in the green’. This means you buy a newly lifted clump of Snowdrops, just about to flower. They are strong robust plants ready for planting and will immediately settle in your soil and give you instant colour. Over the next few years they will naturalise, and in time reward you with a thick carpet of plants - a real eye-catching signal that Spring is here. Likewise, if your Snowdrops have been in place for many years, and they look over dense and struggling for space, now is the time to lift some and replant in another part of your garden. Dig deeply all-round the clump
before gently but firmly lifting with a strong hand trowel. They will thank you for this division by having a new lease of life and continue to flourish - and you’ll have more Snowdrops for free! One tip to help your plants to keep strong and healthy - once they have finished flowering, leave the foliage to die back naturally. They will look a bit untidy, and you may well be tempted to cut the old leaves back, but don’t - leave them as they are , the Snowdrops need to build up their strength and cutting them back will weaken them . In another couple of months it will be time to plant summer flowering bulbs such as Allium, Gladioli and Begonias we’ll have a look at this range in the next issue.

Not a bridge too far A decade ago my wife with whom I had run a professional practice for many years took up a post which took her away from home generally from Monday to Friday. What was I to do for some mental stimulus and company during the week? I have a very limited tolerance for discussing the mating habits of the green woodpecker, the finer points of jam making, the permutations of treble bob majors, or learning another language (been there, done all those). One possible solution was to take up contract bridge. Any problem? Yes, two: I knew how to play (just) but had not played for thirty years and more and I did not have a ready-made partner. You may well be ‘in the same boat’. However, I 46
was fortunate enough to discover Risborough & District Bridge Club. They found me partners, they tolerated and helped me understand my (many) errors; and I have enjoyed playing there ever since. At Risborough we play ‘duplicate bridge’. This means one plays the same hands as are played by other pairs and (if one is interested in competition) one’s score is computed by reference to how well one has done in comparison to other pairs. Unlike rubber bridge, losers can be (comparative) winners. Not everyone is interested in competition; they just come for the company and the joy of playing. In short, it can be fun, competitive, exciting and social as well as age neutral. We have two sessions of play. One is on a Tuesday afternoon from 1.25 to about 4.30. The other is on Wednesday evening from 7.25 to about 10.30; they are both in the Carrington Room of the Community Centre in Stratton Road. We have a website: www.bridgewebs.com/risborough. Come and join us.

Risborough Good Neighbours Risborough Good Neighbours is a volunteer scheme run to help people get to medical appointments. For the people of Risborough and local villages it is a lifeline. It enables people without transport to keep all kinds of medical appointments. Unfortunately, because of a lack of volunteers, this scheme is in danger of having to cease operating. We desperately need telephone coordinators, who arrange the trips, and drivers who undertake to take people and return them home afterwards. Telephone calls can be charged for and drivers get the maximum rate allowed of 45p per mile. Nobody is tied to any particular time, each trip is arranged individually. Please help this worthwhile scheme to continue. The vital number is 01844 342600, available from 9.00am – 4.30pm, if you feel willing to offer or wish to enquire about the service. Chess Club (Chinnor) Held weekly at Chinnor Scout Hut during term time only, every Wednesday from 6.00pm – 8.00pm. All proceeds to Chinnor Scouts (£1 per session) and everyone is welcome. For more details contact Mike Turton on 07877 897939. Citizens Advice Bureau C.A.B now holds confidential sessions in a private office located in Chinnor Parish Council offices on a Thursday morning. For an appointment please call: 08444 111444. By appointment only. The Chilterns Art Group The group meets every Monday evening from 7.00pm-9.30pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Princes Risborough (opposite the Church). Professional demonstrations are held every 3-4 months and Saturday workshops 3 times a year. Regular sessions with a professional tutor are held on the second Thursday morning of the month at 9.30am. Come and see us or call 01844 216882 for more information.
