Editors’ Letter Welcome to the March/April issue of Chiltern View Risborough magazine. This issue is always the one where many of us start to look forward. Brighter mornings, lighter and longer evenings, spring flowers blooming and baby animals everywhere. After such a mild but wet and windy winter, it is nice to think about sunshine, warmer weather and wonder what this year will bring. First on the calendar is Mother’s Day (March 6th) followed by Easter (very early this year) and then St. George’s Day (23rd April). If you are planning an event or wedding event, then we are pleased to introduce Ela from Bochic who is kindly going to write an article for us each issue. She has lots of great tips and advice to help your day go smoothly. (page 40).

Recipe of the Month
Iced Orange Bundt Cake Serves 10, Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus cooling and setting times This delicious citrus flavoured sponge is made in a classic ring-shaped bundt tin. You’ll find them in most good cook shops and larger supermarkets, or you can use an ordinary 1.5L capacity ring mould tin instead. INGREDIENTS: • 200g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 300g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting • 200g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 1/2 tsp baking powder • Finely grated zest of 1 large orange • 100ml fresh orange juice • 100-150ml milk FOR THE ICING: • 100g icing sugar • Approx 2 tbsp fresh orange juice TIP: Make sure to grease and flour the bundt tin thoroughly or you may find it tricky to turn the cake out. Use the tip of a small palette knife or silicon spatula to gently loosen the edges of the cake first. 20
METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Thoroughly grease a 22-23cm Bundt tin (measured across the top) with butter then lightly dust with flour, tipping out the excess. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat together until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then sift over the flour and baking powder and fold in along with the orange zest and juice. Fold in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency. 3. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin and gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the cake is risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes then carefully turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. 4. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl then beat in the orange juice to make a smooth and thick icing. Drizzle the icing over the top of the cake, letting it drizzle down the sides. Leave in a cool place until set.

This time last year BOB was whisking medical crews to emergencies across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, then in October 2015 BOB ‘retired’ to the south of France, lucky him! Where BOB once reigned a lady has taken his place, welcome ‘VAL’, or G-TVAL to be accurate, a brand new Airbus H135 T3 helicopter. VAL can do everything BOB brought to emergency support across the region and more, she is… an upgrade! Since becoming operational VAL has been working hard, but from mid-March this year she really comes into her own, VAL can fly at night! BOB could too but landing limitations meant only brightly lit locations were suitable. With special lights and nightvision goggles VAL can pretty much go anywhere and it’s not just this kit that makes her special. Carrying a vast range of lifesaving equipment including stateof-the-art ultrasound devices, blood transfusion kit and a blood analyser VAL helps shave off vital

Once completed, the newly renamed Thames Valley Air Ambulance (TVAA) will have full night-flying capability allowing them to operate a 19hr day from 7.00am to 2.00am. During winter when we only have around eight hours of daylight VAL is effectively operational for an additional eleven hours! Working closely with South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, TVAA relies wholly on public support. You can help in many
ways, donations, recycling, fundraising and attending events that support the charity. The Abingdon Air and Country Show held annually at ex-RAF Abingdon, Dalton Barracks, OX13 6JQ, just off the A34 is one such event. This year’s show is on Sunday 1st May from 10.00am until 5.30pm. A full afternoon air display is complimented by ground attractions including static aircraft, falconry and other countryside demonstrations, vintage vehicles, steam engines, music, dance, Daleks, children’s amusements, tank rides, craft and trade stalls and much more!

Spring Planting
There cannot be a plant that epitomises a traditional English garden more than a rose. Many plants and shrubs tend to go in and out of fashion, but the rose will always justify its place in any garden. Spring is the very best time to plant your roses, the soil is warming up, and the roots of the rose are ready to settle then flourish. Roses do need some management, so spend some time preparing the ground. Dig the plot over, and add some farmyard manure then fertiliser - chicken manure pellets or fish, blood and bone are just the job. If you intend to plant new roses where old ones once where, it is important to dig the old soil and compost out of the bed before adding a new mixture. Rose diseases can linger in beds, so spending time prior to planting will pay dividends in the future. Your next move it to decide what variety of rose you’d like. The two most popular families of bush rose are Hybrid Tea, which produce large showy flowers, and Floribunda that possess a multitude of smaller heads, both these two bush roses grow to around 1 metre high. If your space is limited, choose Patio roses. These are smaller plants, around 50cm high and are particularly suited to growing in containers. For a bigger, bolder example there are the shrub roses. These old fashioned varieties are great if you’re looking to replicate a cottage garden. But do some research before purchasing. For instance Canary Bird a superb yellow flowering rose will grow to over 3 metres tall, so make sure your select the right rose for the right place. If you wish to cover a wall or trellis, there is a climbing rose for you. Climbers will grow to around 3 metres high, big enough for most gardens, but if you have a large area to cover, go for a Rambler. These roses will grow and 36
grow - Kiftsgate and Wedding Day are two that will exceed 10 metres! Again, a little research before visiting us to buy will pay dividends. Perhaps the most popular family of roses are the Special Moments range. These are a mixture of Hybrid Tea, Floribunda and Patio that are named to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays, an excellent present for the gardener in your life. Once you have planted your roses, keep an eye on them to make sure they are not affected by fungal problems such as blackspot. Most modern varieties are pretty much disease free, but in a spell of warm damp weather, some roses can fall prey to disease. But don’t worry too much, we stock a number of excellent sprays that will treat and cure any unattractive blemishes. Risborough Good Neighbours Risborough Good Neighbours is a voluntary scheme. It is run to help people without transport get to all kinds of medical appointments. It is a lifeline to many people in Risborough and the local villages. In the past year we have completed at least 700 trips. Unfortunately because of a lack of volunteers we have been unable to fulfil all the requests made to us. Sometimes we have been unable to find a driver or else there have not been enough co-ordinators to fill all the days, from 44
Monday to Friday. I would ask people who have not been able to get a reply on 01844 342600 to try again later. If we cannot get more volunteers, this scheme will be in great danger of failing completely. Co-ordinators arrange to find drivers after receiving telephone calls from clients. Drivers take clients to their appointments and bring them home afterwards. Co-ordinators can charge for their telephone calls and drivers receive the maximum rate of 45p. per mile for each journey, charged from their home. Nobody is tied

Anyone can use our bus, young and old, and a recent passenger survey gave us a 100% satisfaction rating. Our trained volunteer drivers are well thought of: “these drivers are the most helpful I have been served by for 44 years” said a passenger recently.
Over 20,000 passengers a year now use our “little green bus” that runs daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services around Princes Risborough and to outlying villages. Drop-off for passengers is in the High Street. Most journeys cost only £1.50 or 50p for children and most concessionary passes are accepted.
We make the bus available for use by non-profit making organisations and groups when not on scheduled service and we run outings each month to places of interest. Available on the Bus: £3.50 each or 3 for £10
