Editors’ Letter Welcome to the January/ February issue of Chiltern View Risborough magazine.

Our deliverers are local people, of all ages, who pop 24000 magazines through doors every 2 months, come rain or shine and we couldn’t do this without them.

We have a very exciting start to our year as our Chiltern View Villages magazine is celebrating its 100th issue.

As most of you know, we decided several years ago not to send out Christmas Cards to our lovely advertisers but instead to use that money to support a local charity. This year our donation will be going to FOCUS ( Families of Children United Support ) at Saunderton Lodge, just outside Princes Risborough. This local charity helps to provide support to families and children. For more information go to www.bucksvoice.net/focussaunderton.

We are so proud to have reached this milestone at the beginning of 2017 and we know from the wonderful feedback, that many of you have been reading and using our magazine for all of those issues (over 11 years). We have printed and distributed hundreds of thousands of magazines across our three titles and we would like to thank all our loyal advertisers and our amazing delivery teams for making this possible.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2017.

Until the next time...

Ménière’s Disease A condition of the Inner Ear and Vestibular System

Ménière’s disease is named after a French Physician Prosper Ménière who in 1800’s worked at a deaf/mute institute in France and studied the condition, that they finally put his name to. Ménière’s is a condition of the inner ear affecting balance and hearing. It is thought to be caused by unusually large amounts of a fluid called endolymph creating a build up of pressure in the inner ear. This pressure can cause the inner ear Treatments control symptoms rather than curing the condition. Having Ménière’s can affect your mental health and have a impact on to send abnormal messages to the your whole family. The balance aspect of the condition can prevent brain resulting in dizziness, vomiting you from driving and involve days when you cannot leave your bed. and dulled hearing. It is often described by sufferers as a feeling of ‘fullness in the ear’, and can lead on to dramatic unpredictable, devastating attacks of severe vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Longer term effects of the condition can include permanent hearing loss and tinnitus and on-going balance problems. Exact causes of the condition are unknown but there are potential links to circulation problems, viral infections, allergies, the immune system, migraines or genetic factors.

How to cope day-to-day: Get up slowly giving senses time to adjust to being upright. Take time out. Regular exercise including yoga and pilates to maintain flexibility and strength which can help balance and aid relaxation. Wearing sunglasses can relieve eye strain. Carry medication on you at all times. Listen to relaxation tapes at night. Use night lights to avoid harsh electric light. Use hearing aids that have a remote control and different programmes to help cope with fluctuating hearing loss. Look after your mental health - talk to people, you are not on your own.

Over our 30 years of practice we meet many people living with Ménière’s disease. We have helped them practically with hearing technology that allows them to adjust the levels to suit different stages of the condition. On a less practical level we feel some of the best help we can offer is social and mental support. We have been working together with Amersham Tinnitus & Ménière’s society to provide an outlet for people to meet and share experiences in a safe, guided place. Out next events are:Tuesday 7th February 10.00am - 12pm in Thame Town Hall and Friday 10th February 10am -12pm at Flint Barn Court, Old Amersham. Please join us, or if you can’t make these dates, register your interest and we will keep you informed of future events, which may include weekend and evening get togethers if we can garner sufficient interest. www. a sto n h ea r i ng . c o. u k 01494 733840 (Am e rs ha m ) - 0184 4 3 9 6 0 57 ( Tha m e )

Continuing our 5 Star Service into the New Year With Christmas fast approaching we’re all thinking about the important things in life. Important things like family, love, friendship, kindness and community.

I was sitting down thinking about this the other day and what’s important to us here at Thame Cars all year round, not just at Christmas. We’ve been selling, servicing, hiring and fixing cars for over two decades and throughout this time we’ve held certain values to be important. Every day we strive to make the lives of our customers happy, simple, safe & convenient. I think you and I can agree that none of us can have too much happiness in our lives, and this is front and centre of the way operate. After all, it doesn’t take much to treat people with respect and good humour. Too many things in life are more complicated than they need to be. And we take a real pleasure in simplifying the processes of buying, servicing or hiring a car from us. Simple is good, and if we can’t explain the process to a six year old we go back to the drawing board and start again until we can. When it comes to your car, safety is always going to be one of your most important considerations, which is why it had to make it 16

into our short list. It’s perhaps taken as granted that everybody who goes near your car’s inner workings is a qualified technician, but it’s important to us to go above and beyond. By making sure that we give all the cars we prepare for sale an additional 100 point safety check you can be certain that you’re being looked after. Nobody enjoys inconvenience, but it’s almost an unwritten rule that some things in life will be awkward. We don’t want servicing your car to fall into this category which is why we do everything we can to make it stress-free and easy, with minimal impact on your busy life. After all, just because we enjoy hanging around a garage all day doesn’t mean that you should have to. So we offer an efficient collection & return service that eliminates as much of the hassle as possible. Christmas is a time for reflecting and refocusing on the important things in life. The most important thing for us is you, our wonderful customers. And we’re perpetually on the lookout for more ways we can make your life happy, simple, safe & convenient.

What’s cooking in winter? Winter is a time for hearty, warming, stews and casseroles. One of the best is a French Classic, Beef Bourguignon. Here at What’s Cooking we use braising steak, smoked streaky bacon and good red wine. Cut the beef into quite large pieces (5cm x 3cm approx.), so that they stand up to the long slow cook.

Beef Bourguignon Feeds 4-6 people Ingredients: 1kg Braising steak 1 x Spanish onion, peeled and diced 5-6 slices smoked streaky bacon, cut into pieces 1cm wide Half a bottle red wine (preferably from Burgundy) 250ml beef stock 2 x cloves garlic, crushed A few sprigs of thyme 2 x bay leaves 40gr tomato paste 12 x peeled shallots 18 x small button mushrooms 1 x tablespoon cornflour Salt & Pepper

Method: In a large saucepan add a little rapeseed oil and gently fry the onions until soft. Meanwhile in a frying pan fry the pieces of beef 18

over a high heat until nicely browned. Add the beef to the onions and then de-glaze the frying pan with the red wine, using a wooden spatula to scrape up any residue from the beef. Add the wine to the beef & onions and then add the stock, thyme, bay leaves, garlic and tomato paste. Add water to just cover the beef and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 2 hours or until the beef is very

tender. In a frying pan, fry the bacon in a little oil until browned and add to the stew. In the same pan add the shallots and lightly brown adding them to the stew together with the button mushrooms. Cook for about 15 minutes. Remove the thyme sprigs and bay leaves. Season with salt and pepper, then slake the cornflour with a little cold water and use this to thicken the sauce to your liking.

Bon appetit!

A Fresh Start

The start of a new year is often the time when we take a critical look at our lives and think about making some changes. Whether you want to take up a new hobby or start your own business, this month’s books are for you… The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying: A Simple, Effective Way to Banish Clutter Forever Marie Kondo

If you feel like you’re drowning in a sea of ‘stuff’, this book might help. Kondo encourages us to only keep those possessions that ‘spark joy’. There is some waffle in places, but stick with it. There are some great tips and tricks. Most importantly, Kondo helps the reader to think about the emotions connected to items, and the kind of life they could have if they lived in a simpler, less cluttered space.

The Idea in You: How to Find It, Build It, and Change Your Life Martin Amor and Alex Pellew

If you’re fed up with the daily grind and thinking of starting your own business, this book could give you the kick start you need. It’s packed with advice and encouragement for turning ‘your daydream 22

into dynamite’. There are case studies, exercises, and useful resources, along with plenty of practical information. And, unlike many other books in this genre, it’s also actually enjoyable to read.

The Girl in the Garden Melanie Wallace

A single teenage mum, a grieving widow, a photographer, a recluse, a man trying to do what’s right. Characters with very different outlooks and lives, but their stories are all entwined. And their flaws, hopes and buried dreams are all too identifiable. They all need to allow themselves to heal and trust if they’re to take those first tentative steps towards a better life.

The Great British Sewing Bee: From Stitch to Style Wendy Gardiner

Those looking to indulge their creative side in 2017 could find plenty to tempt them here. The companion book to the fourth series of the BBC2 show The Great British Sewing Bee, the book offers advice on everything from choosing fabric to altering designs. There are also more than 25 patterns included with the book, with projects

ranging from a Babygro to a cocktail dress. Aimed at all abilities, this could well prove to be indispensable for new and experienced sewers alike.

Bloom: Navigating Life and Style Estée Lalonde

Beauty and lifestyle vlogger Lalonde has gained a legion of fans, and much critical acclaim, for her daily musings on style, beauty, food and life in general. In Bloom, Lalonde talks about the highs and lows of her life, including overcoming depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. A beautifully designed book for dipping in and out of when you need a bit of inspiration.

Making It Up As I Go Along Marian Keyes

In this collection of essays, Keyes gives us a hilarious insight into her daily life and thoughts. While it’s laughaloud funny, there’s also a good dose of reflection. Keyes isn’t afraid to poke fun at herself and reveal her own vulnerability. By doing so, she reminds us that often we’re our own worst critics and sometimes we need to just go easy on ourselves.

Health Matters

OSTEOPATH DAVID GRAY

Arthritic Pain

Many people can be lead to believe that there is nothing that can be done about the symptoms of developing age. As we get older our muscles, bones, ligaments and joints will also age. Ageing alone does not necessarily result in increased pain or stiffness. Some people with agerelated pain & that treatment and advice from an osteopath complements GP care and pharmaceutical products. Osteopathic treatment is a hands-on approach offering a package of care that is personalised to you. If you begin to notice problems as you get older, your

osteopath can work with you to keep you healthier, allowing you to enjoy the pleasures of life despite the natural ageing process. Osteopathic treatment and advice may help you feel better prepared to continue with, or adapt your lifestyle as your body changes with time. When you first visit an osteopath, you’ll be asked about your current symptoms and medical history. All information will be treated as confidential in accordance with standards of professional practice.

After an initial examination, your osteopath will discuss treatment options with you so that you can agree a course of action and the likely associated costs. Treatment may require several visits and, very occasionally, further tests and or referrals to other appropriate health care professionals. Most osteopaths will begin your treatment at your first appointment, with your agreement. If you have any concerns about any treatment, David encourages you, to discuss these further. You’re more than welcome to bring someone with you, for your consultation.

Children & Babies: Cranial Osteopathy is a gentle & non-invasive treatment.

Vet’s Corner

I am thinking about getting a dog. What do I need to consider? It is an important decision. A dog could be with you for the next fifteen years or more. There are so many considerations: a puppy, an older dog, a pedigree, a crossbreed and which sex? It can feel daunting, but there is help available – you are not alone. Not all dogs have the same requirements, yet they will all demand your commitment as a responsible dog owner.

Do you have a preference for walks around the block, or would you enjoy a dog that can climb those Scottish Munros? Will he or she be alone at home? If so, what is the cost of the nearest doggy day care? Remember that a working type dog will quickly become “self-employed” if not kept entertained. How much will he or she eat and is this affordable? Then there is the cost of vaccination, parasite control and health care. Good sites are accessible on the Internet. The Kennel Club have lovely descriptions regarding the character, feeding and exercise

requirements of pedigree breeds. Rescue centres such as the Blue Cross help in the selection of a dog that needs rehoming including some of the pitfalls. Your vet is an excellent place to start and staff are always ready to help with your questions. Good hunting. Dr Mandy Elgin BVMS MRCVS

West Wycombe and Bradenham Walks

Walk lengths: circular routes of 3, 4.5 and 7 miles Starting point: Bradenham, Saunderton or West Wycombe Enjoy the beauty of the Bradenham Valley, a spectacular gateway to the Chiltern Hills, on these circular walks. The routes pass through hilltop beechwoods, rolling farmland, historic commons and some picturesque local villages including Bradenham and West Wycombe. If you are feeling fit you can add on some extra miles by including Downley Common and Hughenden Manor en route! There are plenty of quirky and historic features to discover as you stroll along. West Wycombe is full of history – from the imposing Dashwood Mausoleum and St Lawrence’s Church on top of the hill to the classically-landscaped grounds of West Wycombe Park and the spooky Hellfire Caves offering infamous tales of 18th century aristocratic partying. The attractive Manor in Bradenham was occupied by Benjamin Disraeli, Queen Victoria’s favourite prime minister, before he moved to nearby Hughenden. Above Bradenham you can walk up through classic Chilterns

West Wycombe Hill in autumn beechwoods, planted in past centuries for the local furniture industry. When you emerge from the woods there are great views across the Bradenham Valley. If you are taking the detour to Downley you’ll walk across Downley Common, which originally provided grazing land for the villagers of West Wycombe. Ponds in the local woods are probably over 300 years old and were dug to provide water for cattle. If you fancy a stop for refreshment there are pubs in West Wycombe, Bradenham, Saunderton and Downley. You’ll need stout footwear as some of the paths can be muddy. Some parts of the walks have steep ascents and descents and stiles, but other sections are more level and stile-free. The West Wycombe and Bradenham Walks are part of the Chilterns Country series of walking routes produced by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can download a free leaflet for it which has a route map and detailed route directions, plus lots of other useful information. Download it from www. chilternsaonb.org/walk-ridesleaflets-2 It’s also part of the free Handheld Tours app.

Is making a Will on your New Year’s resolution list? As your life changes it’s important to make a Will - it’s the only way to make sure your wishes in life are carried out after you’re gone.

This February, participating solicitors from across the Chilterns have agreed to give their time and Will-writing expertise freely in return for a comparable donation to Rennie Grove Hospice Care. Rennie Grove Hospice Care is a local charity providing specialist nursing care across the Chilterns to patients and families diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Rennie Grove asks that you consider making a donation of £99 for a standard single Will and £195 for a pair of matching Wills. If your needs are more complex the solicitor will be happy to discuss any additional fees at your initial meeting. Simply contact a solicitor from the list below and arrange an appointment during February quote: ‘Make Your Will Month Rennie Grove’.

With Christmas and the New Year now a memory, the days are beginning to lengthen and slowly but surely, Spring approaches. The garden, at the moment, may be out of bounds due to the rain or frost, so this is time for planning and preparing. If the weather is against you, there’s nothing to stop you getting your greenhouse ready for the forthcoming gardening season. Make a nice cup of tea, pop the radio on and get to grips with your potting bench, hand tools and pots. Give everything a good clean with some diluted Jeyes fluid, making sure all your equipment and glass are spotlessly clean will prevent any nasty diseases taking a hold later in the year. Empty out that seed box and take a look at your seed packets. It’s not always necessary to buy new seed every year as most packs will be fresh enough to sew for at least a couple of seasons but there is a limit. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you found seeds dating back many years. Whilst it is thrifty to use your old seed, I’ve found that it can be a mistake. You can waste compost and more importantly 44

time as you will not get any germination and have to start the whole process again. The early new year is just the time to plan any planting schemes you have in mind for this year. Draw up a plan of your garden and do some research on what plants you intend to use. Spend time thinking about what you want in your garden, the height, hardiness, soil suitability, evergreen or deciduous, possible fragrance etc. Planning your new bed is exciting, and it can save you a great deal of money. You may well visit a garden centre and be tempted by an azalea in flower or a rhododendron in bud, but planting them in your garden around here would be a big mistake. These plants, and some others, are lime haters - they need an acid soil to flourish. Our gardens have a high PH, meaning it is alkaline, so the aforementioned

plants would struggle at the very least, or more likely die. Don’t worry, there are a huge number of plants that will thrive in our soil - take a look online, or if you’re still in doubt drop in and one of us will gladly advise you. One of the first tasks of the year is to think about Seed Potatoes. We start stocking them at the end of January, but it is far too early to plant them out. There is a vast choice of varieties, so again, do your research. Some are ideal for mashing, some for roasting and so on. If space is limited and you don’t have a spare bed, you can easily grow Seed Potatoes in a large container. The benefit of growing them like this is they are easy to harvest, and will be ready to eat earlier than those planted in the garden. See you soon,

Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell

and all at Askett Nurseries.

Vive la Resolution!

Spend less time on the web. That’s a good quote to tweet or to add to your new blog. Alternatively,

(Even the ones doomed to failure.) Get fit. Is that Wii Fit, or actually fit? As in visiting a gym or a footpath? You could try the free WiFi challenge (cafes don’t count!) and with any luck it’ll be a hundred yards to your next hotspot. Eat more healthily. Right after you’ve finished off all the food you over-ordered for Christmas and New Year. Apart from the fruit and veg that died of neglect. Drink less. Clearly, we’re talking happy juice here (or sad juice, depending). If cutting back were as simple as writing down the intent in the throes of a hangover, you’d have accomplished that LAST year. Deduct points if your resolution list serves as a coaster to save getting lager on the tablecloth. Be kinder to my fellow human beings. You could try smiling at passers-by when jogging to the nearest Wi-Fi spot. But you’re more likely to stress about trying to be good and then have a meltdown in a shopping queue. Even when it’s online. 46

you could spend less time on the web in restaurants, at christenings and while having a conversation. Keep up my resolutions. If you’ve created a spreadsheet, added activity symbols, subtasks and milestone dates...none of that counts. Spend less money on unimportant things. Like resolutions, perhaps? Or unachievable goals? Or attempts at seasonal behavioural modification? Above all, keep your resolve in 2017! by Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk @DerekWriteLines

Bridging The Gap

Enabling independence at home

Happy New Year! Is your happiness meter half full or half empty? Are you optimistic or is gloom and doom the order of the day? Perhaps a a bit of both, expressing both pleasure and discontent. ‘Happy’ means “feeling pleasure or satisfaction.” Mick Jagger, despite wealth and fame sang “I can’t get no satisfaction”. Happiness, too, is difficult to find. One way is to give to others and to receive their gratitude. Bridges trains carers to provide specialist home

care to clients who cannot do everything for themselves. We do what it says on the tin, “bridging the gap enabling independence at home.” Our recent survey reveals clients are happy with Bridges: “We are very happy and confident with the service… They are always cheerful and friendly… doing a difficult job with the best possible attitudes… We appreciate all that you do… intelligent care and have a happy attitude.” We are all living longer so more folk need care in their own home,

so Bridges needs to recruit more care team members. Bonny Harrison and Wendy James have 35 years of domiciliary care management and provide the Bridges team with expert guidance, management and training. Come and have a chat today – give others a really Happy New Year and find contentment yourself.
