Summer Games

What’s On

Buy Local, Live Local, Love Local

Welcome...

e are thrilled to have Mike Lacey’s photograph, taken at Porthmeor, on our front cover for the third issue. Mike swims out with his camera in all conditions to photograph and capture the power and intensity of Cornish waves. No two waves are ever the same and this makes each photograph a unique piece of art that can be treasured forever. You can visit his gallery on Tregenna Hill in St. Ives and see these breath-taking photographs for yourself. For more information visit www.wavesgallery.co.uk or email info@mikelaceyphotography.co.uk. If you’re thinking about keeping healthy for the summer but can’t resist a sweet treat then Je Tam’s chocolate mousse recipe is a must as it’s gluten, sugar and dairy free. You can also buy their range of guilt free cakes, desserts and biscuits from the Allotment Deli in St. Ives.

We were lucky to see the fantastic performance of West Side Story by Kidz R Us in May. If you didn’t see it then it’s back during August. See the Local News section for more information about their shows in July and August. Finally, enjoy July and August. Hopefully it will be a warm, sunny summer full of exciting activities and events. Our next issue will be in September/October so please get in touch with any local news or events happening in these months.

Kidz R Us Summer Show Bonanza at St. Ives Theatre In its 21st year, award-winning youth theatre company Kidz R Us presents three unmissable musicals this summer at St. Ives Theatre: Consider Yourself invited to Oliver! A firm favourite with all the family, Oliver! stars Dickens’ timeless characters in the ever-popular story of the boy who asked for more. Kidz R Us brings its typical youthful energy and feeling to this classic tale and Lionel Bart’s sensational score. From the streets of London we travel to the streets of Manhattan for West Side

Story, the groundbreaking musical that originated on Broadway in 1957. Unforgettable songs and dazzling dance numbers, performed by teenagers and young adults – no other musical comes close to matching it for sheer energy! Finally, following performances at the Minack Theatre at Easter, Some Enchanted Evening makes its debut in St Ives. Presented by the Kidz R Us graduates group, this celebration of the songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein is an exhilarating parade of all-time musical favourites. Barnoon Workshop: St. Ives’s Newest Art Space Zoe and Pete Giles, who are both artists, moved to St. Ives five years ago and were the creative force behind the successful Café Art, in Chapel Street. They recently turned their full time attention to Barnoon Workshop, a ‘not for profit’ arts organisation with the aim of providing creative activities to both residents and visitors to St. Ives, whilst providing employment opportunities for artists. The team consists of a loose collective of arts professionals that provide a diverse range of activities for children and adults, from craft based skills to art and music. There are also plans for some community activities for special events this year. If you want to find out about events, or get involved by volunteering or maybe

have a workshop idea, then take a look at their website www.barnoonworkshop.co.uk or find them on Facebook.

My Favourite View

St. Ives Surf School Our favourite view has got be looking out towards Clodgy from the comfort of a surfboard whilst waiting for a wave at Porthmeor. There is never a bad sight from this part of town, even in the driving rain and howling wind. However, on a summer’s evening when the wind is light and the sun is sinking into the horizon, it simply cannot be beaten. If you don’t believe us come and see for yourself! Situated on Porthmeor Beach in the heart of St. Ives, and a stone’s throw away from the iconic Tate Gallery is St. Ives Surf School, the first and only

Out and About

Family Time Summer is finally here! And that means schools out so we’ve thought of some ideas to keep the kids entertained through the next, hopefully sunny, six weeks.

Make a summer jar of fun Make a list of fun activities, put them in a jar and have the kids pick one out for the day. To make sure the activity fits the weather put outside ideas on yellow paper and rainy day activities on blue paper. Here is a list of ideas to get you started:

1. Go to the park 2. Make lemonade 3. Have a film night 4. Camp in the garden 5. Have a treasure hunt 6. Make ice-lollies 7. Have a picnic

Water Balloon Piñata This game is a great way to stay cool on a hot day and doesn’t take too much preparation.

10

Simply fill water balloons with water and hang the balloons (monkey bars on a children’s climbing frame or washing line works well). Then set a timer to see who can break the most balloons in the fastest time whilst blindfolded.

Water-gun tag Another good game to play in the heat is water-gun tag. This is a clever twist on a classic and all you need to play is one water gun. This game is best played in bathing suits. The rules are simple: whoever is “It” gets the water gun and tries to tag the other players with a cold squirt!

Night time garden bowls If your children are old enough to be awake when it’s dark then this is a fun game for a summer evening. All you will need is: • Eleven empty plastic bottles of similar size • Eleven glow sticks • Ball Put a glow stick in each bottle and fill with water. Then arrange in rows of 4,3,2,1 and play bowls.

Flower Ice-cubes An easy way to impress your guests in the summer is by making flower ice-cubes. Freeze small, edible flowers such as borage, pansies and violas in ice cubes. Perfect with sparkling elderflower or a G&T.

Keeping Herbs Happy In the summer months and warm weather, herbs like basil, coriander and rocket can bolt and flower early. You can keep them going for as long as possible, by pinching out and picking regularly, by watering before midday, by not transplanting and by giving protection from the midday sun.

Freeze your excess vegetables Freezing broad beans and peas is a great way of storing any surplus for the winter months. For the best results, always pick veg that is in good condition. Don’t just freeze the last wrinkled peas and beans from your plants!

Vegetable Plot

• Provide water for the birds. Keep your bird bath topped up for the birds. It’s thirsty work raising chicks. If you don’t have a bird bath, just put some water in a large plant pot tray and place in the garden.

Vegetables to sow in July: • Sow French beans and Runner beans either directly or start them off in small pots. You can begin to harvest these in late August.

• Dozens of species will make use of nest boxes. In many gardens, there may be lots of food, but nowhere to nest.

• Perpetual spinach can be sown now for crops in autumn and winter. • Directly sow beetroot now so they mature in time for autumn. • Sow turnips in drills.

Ways to make your garden a haven for birds

• Choose plants that are more attractive to native wildlife. Favourites with birds are natives like crab apples, hawthorn, honeysuckle, rowan, and sunflowers.

Clean Chocolate Mousse We love Je Tam’s healthy, guilt free treats. Their range of ‘clean and raw’ cakes, biscuits, chocolates, desserts and savouries are handmade in Hayle by Tam and Monika from St Ives, and stocked in The Allotment Deli in St. Ives. This recipe is gluten free, sugar free, dairy free, vegan and raw. There are only 4 ingredients and in about 5-10 minutes you have a delicious, healthy desert.

Ingredients

• 1 can coconut milk (don’t shake, you want all the cream to float to the top) • 2 ripe avocados • 2 tbsp of Raw Cacao • 2 tbsp of 100% Maple Syrup (I like to use this to sweeten as it’s lower in fructose than honey or agave and full of essential minerals and antioxidants) • Berries to serve

Open the can of coconut milk and scoop out all the thick cream from the top of the can. Pop this in the blender with the rest of the ingredients. You’ll be left with about a 1/3 of a can of coconut water, add a splash of the water about 2-3 tbs. Save the water as you can add it to smoothies. Blend all the ingredients together, you may need to scoop the sides down once or twice.

Method

Peel the avocados and pop in a Nutribullet or blender with the Cacao and maple syrup.

16

Taste and make sure it’s sweet enough for you, if not then add a little more maple syrup but you’ll find the coconut cream sweetens it beautifully. Layer into a dish or glass with berries of your choice and devour.

vegboxes and recipe boxes to families in Cornwall say, “So many people aspire to cook from scratch but don’t quite manage it. We know our produce wins on flavour, but that’s no good if people can’t find the time to prepare it. With our new recipe boxes you can still cook from scratch and eat well, without having to spend time planning, shopping or even measuring the ingredients!” To order or find out more, visit www.riverford.co.uk/recipebox

Mr Macawber’s Birthday Mr Macawber, a rescued Husky cross Collie, wanted to raise awareness of National Animal Welfare Trust (Wheal Alfred Kennels) in Hayle by celebrating his 11th birthday at the Trust’s charity shop at 1-2 Foundry House, Foundry Square, Hayle. On his 11th birthday, Mr Macawber was dressed in his fashionable onesie and celebrated in style with a special sausage birthday cake decorated with biscuit bones, which was later shared with the dogs at the Centre still looking for their new homes. Mr Macawber will be making an appearance at the Charity’s August Fete and Fun Dog Show,

being held on Gwithian Road on Sunday 23rd August from 12noon to 3pm, by doing his tricks and also helping promote the importance of microchipping animals. If you would like more information about the Charity and the work it does, please contact the Centre on 01736 756005 or visit the website www.nawt.org.uk. Dog of the Month

About me

Hi! I’m called Eva and I’m a 2 year old Dogue De Bordeaux cross Staffie. I arrived at the Centre via the dog warden although my previous owner was known. I have a really sweet loving side but am also a very scared girl and will need lots of positive experiences and confidence building with the outside world as I haven’t had enough socialisation to date. Being a youngster, I have lots of energy so am looking for an active home where I’ll get to play ball and go on lots of long walks. Once I get to know you, my cheeky and bossy side comes out and I can get grabby and jump up if I get overstimulated so will need someone who’s had experience of rescue dogs before and who will set me boundaries in my new home so I don’t try to rule the roost! I will need a homevisit if there is a resident cat.
