Local News

Local News Cornish Pilot Gigs

These beautiful wooden rowing boats have been used by generations of Cornishmen and women. They provide a fabulous opportunity to enjoy our picturesque coastline. St. Ives town has had a gig club since 1990 and we row regularly from St. Ives harbour. We are currently looking for new rowers as we prepare for the first big event of the

season: the World Championships 2015 on Scilly. Occasional and social rowers are welcome too. It’s fun, addictive and a great way to get fit! Contact Peter (07989947463) or Lucy (07747844239) or simply come along 9am Sundays, St. Ives harbour.

St Piran’s Day

Gool Peran Originally a holiday for tin miners, Saint Piran’s Day is celebrated on the 5th March each year. Famous for discovering the metal tin, Saint Piran (also known as ‘Perran’) is now considered by many as the patron saint of Cornwall. Legend claims that he was cast out from his home country of Ireland by the Irish King and thrown into the sea tied to a millstone. Eventually he arrived at Perranporth where he built an oratory which can still be seen today, half buried under wind-blown sand. The Cornish flag of a white cross on a black background is said to symbolise Saint Piran’s

4

discovery of tin: the white cross being the white metal and the black background the black ore where tin is found. St Piran’s Day is a popular day of celebration and there is an annual St Piran Play on Perran Sands. St Piran’s Day isn’t just celebrated in Cornwall but also in Grass Valley in California where they honour the Cornish miners who helped in the mines in the mid-19th Century.

My Favourite View

Editor, Imogen Ridley loves the view of St. Ives from Pednolva Walk There are beautiful views at every turn in St. Ives, so it was hard to think of my favourite. Having grown up in Penzance, I would often go to St. Ives to visit friends and it was often easier to be dropped off at the top of town, especially in the summer when the roads are filled to bursting. Pednolva Walk always felt like a hidden walkway into St. Ives and a far cry from the congested roads. The view would suddenly appear before me. Its easterly aspect means a superb view of the harbour, especially when highlighted by sunshine.

6

Sometimes, at low tide, I would walk between the dark stones of Pednolva Beach and look out across the Bay and the lighthouse on Smeaton’s Pier. Although not as beautiful as Porthmeor or Porthminster beach, there is something charming about this little, modest beach with its contrasting black rocks and low tide golden sand.

Do you have a favourite view? Send your photograph with a write up about why the view is so special to you to imogen@stiveslocal.com and you could see your photography in a future issue.

Sand Sculptures March and April is the perfect time of year to get outdoors with your family but it’s still a few months yet before it’s warm enough to unearth bikinis and board shorts. How about trying a bit of sand sculpting? It’s perfect for using kids’ imagination, teaching them patience and giving a feeling of accomplishment. Sand sculpting is also cheap to do and they might even make new friends on the beach who want to come and help.

You will need a few basic tools:

© Mellbee80

• Plastic spades • Various sized plastic buckets, cups and bowls • Tools for carving such as plastic knives, forks, spoons and spatulas • Pieces of string for shaving and shaping • Straws • A large plastic spray bottle filled with water (not sea water as the salt will clog the nozzle)

Tips for building sand castles and sculptures: Before starting decide what structure you want to build. A castle? A turtle? A shark with an arm

8

sticking out of its mouth? Once you have agreed what to sculpt or build you need to keep the following basics in mind: • Choose a spot on the beach that’s three or four feet back from the high tide mark. • Use plenty of water: Follow the mantra, “Add sand to water, not water to sand.” A great foundation starts with plenty of water, so have the kids getting buckets of water from the sea and pour it onto the dry sand that you want to build on. Then start piling the wet sand up and begin packing it as high and wet as possible. Once the pile is the right height (usually two to four feet) start pouring a 50/50 mixture of sand and water from each bucket. If blended properly, it will pour like mud and start to firm up within a few seconds. You are now ready to mould the structure into the basic shape you’ve decided to create. • Carve from the top down. Picture your desired creation as you start to carve and remove anything that’s not in your design plan. You can create bricks or stones by cutting lines then blowing out the loose sand with a straw (make sure your eyes are covered to prevent getting sand in them). • When you’ve finished, make sure your sculpture stays standing longer by spraying tap water over it.

Caring For Your Lawn After a wet winter, your lawn might be looking more like a mud bath than a grassy haven. Use these tips to get it back in shape. • Use a rake to remove as much dead grass as you can. This will break up the surface and make space for new grass to come up. • Mow at least once a fortnight in spring so that your grass will grow thicker. But don’t mow too short. Grass will grow best at about two inches.

© Deborah Hall

• Re-seed any dead or damaged grass patches in March and April. Make sure you give newly developing seeds enough water so that they can grow properly. A perfect opportunity to use some of that collected rain water in your water butt.

How To Grow Potatoes In A Bag At the beginning of March, turn an old compost bag inside out and roll down the sides of the compost bag to about half its height. Make a few holes in the bottom of the plastic for drainage and fill the bag with compost to about a depth of 30cms. Put in two tubers per bag and bury them in the 30cm compost and put another 15cms or so on top. Water them in well. Put your sacks somewhere bright, frost free and a little warm. Within 3 weeks or so, they will have begun to shoot. Keep the compost damp and when the shoots are about 15cm, roll up the edges of the bag a few turns and fill up to that level with more compost. Carry on adding compost bit by bit every couple of weeks, until they reach nearly the top of the bag. Then allow the shoots to come up to flower, which should be in May, and you can start to harvest your lovely home-grown potatoes.

Root Veg & Rosemary Ragu Serves 8, prep 10 mins, cook 1½ hours

Ingredients • oil for frying • 2 large onions, finely diced • 2 sticks celery, finely diced • 2 carrots, finely diced • 4 rashers streaky bacon, chopped into small pieces • 400g beef mince • 400g pork mince • 3 tbsp tomato purée • 2 large sprigs rosemary, leaves very finely chopped • 2 good glasses of red wine • 1 pack Riverford chicken stock (500ml) • 800g root veg (eg. 1 parsnip, ½ medium swede, ½ celeriac), diced to 1-2cm

16

Heat 3 tbsp oil in a large pan. Add the onion, celery and carrot. Fry very gently for 12-15 mins, stirring now and then, until softened. Turn up the heat a little, add the bacon and fry for 3-4 mins. Add the beef and pork and fry to brown. Add the tomato purée and stir for 1 min. Add the rosemary, wine, stock and veg. Season and simmer very gently for 1½ hours, giving the odd stir now and then to stop it catching on the bottom. Toss with pasta, use as a lasagne filling or serve on creamy mash. © Riverford Cook Kirsty Hale www.riverford.co.uk/recipes

Book Review

By Alice Harandon: manager of St. Ives Bookseller H is for Hawk Helen Macdonald ISBN 9780224097000 Jonathan Cape 14.99 Following the death of her father, Macdonald decides, as you do, to buy a Goshawk named Mabel on the side of a Scottish Loch. H is for Hawk is the record of her subsequent spiritual journey an unflinchingly honest account of Macdonald’s struggle with grief during the difficult process of the hawk’s taming and her own un-taming. An uplifting tale of the grieving process it is a joy to watch both woman and bird find their feet and how the one brings the other to realise that “hands are for other human hands to hold. They should not be reserved exclusively as perches for hawks”. Winner of the Costa Award for Biography, and now winner of the Costa Book of the Year, this is destined to be a classic of nature writing. Mrs Hemingway – Naomi Wood ISBN 9781447226888 Picador 7.99 This fabulous book opens in the dazzling summer of 1926, Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley travel from their home in Paris to a villa in the south of France. They swim, play bridge and drink gin. But wherever they go they are accompanied by the glamorous and

18

irrepressible Fife. Hadley is the first Mrs. Hemingway, but neither she nor Fife will be the last...Told in four parts and based on real love letters and telegrams, Mrs. Hemingway reveals the explosive love triangles that wrecked each of Hemingway’s marriages. Weathering Lucy Wood ISBN 9781408840931 Bloomsbury 16.99 If you remember Lucy’s 2012 debut Diving Belles, a collection of short folk tales set in the South West, then I am sure you have been eagerly awaiting her novel. Pearl doesn’t know how she’s ended up in the river, or why, for that matter, she’d been stupid enough to fall down some rickety stairs. Ada, Pearl’s daughter, doesn’t know how she’s ended up back in the house she left thirteen years ago with no heating, no way of getting around apart from an old car she’s scared to drive, and no company apart from echoing footsteps on the damp floorboards. With her daughter, Pepper, she starts to sort through Pearl’s things, clearing the house so she can leave and not look back. But as the first frosts of autumn herald the coming of a long winter and Pepper and Ada find themselves irresistibly entangled with the life of the valley, each will discover that places can take root inside them. A strange and haunting tale with a beautifully described rural setting perfect for evenings in front of the fire. Coming soon: We have a beautiful new publication from Mabecron Books due out this Easter –The Tinner’s Hare. (With plans for a new Soggy book to follow, watch this space!)

Dog of the Month

Cookie About me

Hi there! I’m Cookie and I’m a handsome 3/4 year old Lurcher who was brought to the Centre by the Dog Warden. I’m a real sweetheart and I love having company but I suffer from separation anxiety so I can’t be left alone for long periods of time. Sadly, I arrived at the Centre rather underweight but I am slowly putting on weight again. I do try and steal food so my new home will need to keep an eye on me! I will need my confidence building as I get nervous in new situation but with gentle guidance, lots of love and reassurance, I get over this quickly. I will need some house training refreshment and continued work on my recall. I am a typical Lurcher and will chase small furry animals if I get the chance. I would make a lovely friend to my new owner so please come and meet me.
