Editors’ Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View Thame magazine. This issue has been particularly busy, but very exciting, with many new advertisers and editorial promoting local events. We have struggled for space but think we have just about managed to squeeze everyone in. The two main events of the Thame calendar are coming up in June. There is the Thame Carnival (page 32) which has the theme ‘Best of British’ this year, and they are hoping for people to get even more involved with the ‘Giant Carnival Street Party’. They would also love more volunteers to help make bunting leading up to the day. We also have the always popular Thame Duck Race (page 18). There are two competitions in this issue, one for Thame Players (page 21) and one for the Beacon Festival (page 28). There will be a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children,) plus 2 adult tickets awarded to the lucky person who answers this question ‘Who are the headlining band on the Saturday?’ Answers please to Coralie at salesprv@live.co.uk by Friday 3rd June. Some of you will be pleased to hear that we have a new, slightly easier crossword, as we had reports that the crosswords were a little too tricky. We are also very excited to have a new, regular recipe kindly supplied by What’s Cooking in Thame. Finally, we really hope you like the cover this issue. This picture is kindly supplied by Sally at Floral Vintage Crockery (page 13). It epitomises a quintessential, English afternoon tea and this gorgeous crockery is available to hire. Until the next time

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Thame & surrounding areas and

manager James Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give James a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A Good Read The Winter Ghosts – by Kate Mosse This is an unusually short novel by Kate Mosse at just 250 pages. However readers won’t be disappointed as Mosse once again takes us back to the South of France and the area in the Pyrenees which provided the haunting backdrop to her weightier Labyrinth novels. It is 1933, and an Englishman visits a book antiquarian in France with a strange manuscript written in the now extinct Occitan language of the region. The antiquarian is curious and wants to know how an Englishman would have it in his possession. Slowly, the foreigner tells his story. In 1928, with Europe still recovering from the aftermath of World War 1, Freddie is recovering from an illness. Still struggling to come to terms with the death of his older brother George, his doctor suggests a trip to France where the mountain air in the south may help his recovery. He is consumed by grief and guilt over George’s death and welcomes the opportunity to visit the country where his beloved brother died. A car crash during a storm in the mountains sees him stranded in the oddly deserted-looking village of Nulle. He finds lodgings and the next day is invited to attend the Fete de Sainte-Etienne, a celebration of the village’s past. It is here that he meets Fabrissa, a beautiful mysterious woman. Mosse cleverly allows us to see the psychological effects of grief. As in the Labyrinth trilogy she embeds the story in the medieval history of the Cathars (an ancient sect of Christianity, long since destroyed) in the region. Are there such things as ghosts or do we create them in our mind to deal with the events that appear doomed to reoccur throughout history? Or are ghosts merely the reminder of mistakes that we are condemned to repeat?

Cloudberry Castle: Ballet School Secrets by Janey Louise Jones This is the second book in the Cloudberry Castle series. The first introduced ballet-mad Katie and her family. Following the death of their elderly neighbour the Mackenzie family find themselves the owners of Cloudberry Castle. The crumbling building could be beautiful and the book follows Katie and her family as they raise enough money to turn it into a new ballet boarding school. At the start of this second book the school is about to open. Katie’s mother was a dancer with the New York City Ballet and has spent the last few months planning classes, ordering costumes, and holding auditions, whilst her dad has been hard at work transforming the rooms into ballet studios, classrooms, and dormitories. When September arrives Katie is in heaven. She gets to dance all day and soon makes friends with some of the other girls. Her mum is planning to stage Sleeping Beauty at the end of the year and Katie would love to play Princess Aurora. However, one of the new students, Leo, seems to be about to put a dampener on things. She arrives with a private chauffeur and pony and clearly thinks she is better than everyone else. Katie begins to worry that she is not as good at ballet as she thought she was. Can she win the role of Princess Aurora? Combined with a discovery in the grounds of Cloudberry Castle which may well reveal some long-hidden secrets, this novel is perfect for a young ballet fan. Katie is a very likeable narrator and Jones is an engaging writer. This is aimed at readers aged 8+ and its 141 pages are split into 28 manageable chapters for young readers looking to gain more confidence. Mindfulness is everywhere! (but what exactly is it?)

From looking at the local newsagents supply of magazines you would be forgiven for thinking that mindfulness is all about colouring in or perhaps the nice relaxing bit that is included at the end of a yoga class. Other people recoil, horrified at the idea of ‘meditation’ associating it with sitting for hours cross legged doing nothing. Not that there is anything wrong with the above, but it isn’t mindfulness. So, to put the record straight, this is a little list of what mindfulness isn’t, and is….

It’s NOT: • Buddhism by the back door. Although it has its roots in Buddhist practice, it is not, in any way, a religious practice (although many people of different religions find that it complements their faith). • Clearing your mind. Good luck with this one! In mindfulness we practice noticing the habitual patterns of distractions and worries that our mind is constantly engaged in. And then, as best we can, we gently persuade it to come back to where we would like our attention to be. • Just meditating. Although mindfulness does include meditation it is more than this and includes a greater understanding of how our body reacts to stress and ways to help recognise our triggers to this before it becomes a problem.

It IS: • Based on research: type ‘mindfulness’ into Google scholar and you’ll find 213,000 academic papers on the benefits. • A set of simple tools to help with stress, anxiety, low mood and pain.

10

• Great for increasing focus, improving sleep, enjoying the moment, being kinder to yourself • Done by people just like you. Normal, ordinary people whose lives are full of work, children, studying, emails, to-do lists, who just want to find easy, simple techniques to turn all that off and re-discover some peace and calm. Mindfulness Chilterns has been teaching the skills of mindfulness for 4 years. See advert for more details of our Taster sessions in April and July and the next courses starting in May and September.

Quack! Quack! It’s Back! Thame Duck Race 2016 Every year on the morning after Thame Carnival, Thame & District Round Table takes to the river and stages their annual duck race. The event, which takes place on the river in Thame itself, has become a family favourite in Thame’s calendar over the years and regularly attracts a good crowd. The race is effectively a giant floating lottery, which involves dropping more than 2,000 individually numbered rubber ducks into the River Thame. If you have bought a ticket with a number that matches one of the first three ducks over the line, you win a cash prize. All other proceeds from the ticket sales are donated to local causes. Adding to the fun is the irrepressible pirate, Captain Ducky. A children’s favourite and

housewives’ choice (albeit quite often his choice, not theirs), the Captain is there to see that the event proceeds, despite his attempts to organise it! Over the years he has followed the ducks down river in a variety of craft, but has ended up in the drink often enough to qualify for an RNLI loyalty card. This year’s duck race takes place on Sunday 12th June. The race starts on the old town bridge, which is accessed from the bottom of Priest End, behind St Mary’s church. Gates open at 10.30am and the race will start at 11.00. For further information go to www.thameroundtable.org

What’s Cooking in spring? Don’t let anyone tell you that risotto is difficult to cook. The reality in fact, is quite different, risotto is one dish where the results you can achieve at home are often far superior to those achieved in restaurants. (Unless a restaurant warns you that it will take 20 minutes to cook, leave well alone!). The secret is to follow the tried and tested method, without trying to cut corners. It will take you 30 minutes, standing in front of

your stove, but with the radio on and a glass of wine by your side, who can complain? At this time of year, British asparagus is at it’s peak (late April to mid June) and it just so happens that asparagus makes the very finest of risottos. Before you start, wash your asparagus, trim off the woody part of the stem and slice on the diagonal into 5mm slices, leaving the tip whole. Bring your stock to a gentle simmer and you are ready to begin!

Risotto d’Asparagi (Asparagus Risotto)

Serves 2 Ingredients: 50gr butter A small onion, finely chopped 200gr Arborio rice A small glass of white wine 400gr asparagus 1 litre vegetable stock 1 lemon, zest and juice 3 tbs grated parmesan Salt and pepper

Method: 1.

Melt half the butter in a saucepan over a low heat. Add the chopped onion and let it soften. Stir from time to time, you do not want browned onions. Once softened, add the rice

and stir so that the rice is coated in the butter (use a wooden spoon or spatula). Now add the wine and let it reduce to almost nothing. Add a ladleful of hot stock and again let it reduce, stirring all the time until the liquid is absorbed. Now add the asparagus and another ladleful of stock and repeat the process. This is the rhythm of risotto making. Keep adding the

stock a ladle at a time and reducing down, until the rice is “al dente”, i.e. firm to the bite but not “chalky”. Season with salt and pepper, lemon zest & juice. 2.

Add the remainder of the butter and the parmesan and stir through. Leave it to rest for a couple of minutes. Ideally, serve in a wide rimmed soup plate with more parmesan offered separately.

Thame Carnival 2016

PLANS for this year’s Thame Carnival are off to a flying start with the announcement of a repeat of the 2014, vintage flypast. Float ideas on the theme of The ‘Best of British’ are flowing in, and six streets have signed up for the Giant Carnival Street Party planned for the fete. Other streets who would like to join in the celebrations can contact thamecarnival@gmail.com. “Leading up to the Carnival on June 11th, we are going to be attempting to craft enough red, white and blue bunting to decorate the street party gazebos, arena, beer tents and other marquees,” revealed, Carnival Co-ordinator Sue

What our customers say: I can't tell you how pleased I have been with the service I have received from Chiltern View. The response I have had from my adverts has exceeded expectations and they could not have been more friendly and helpful. Jane Barker, Mindfulness

Vets Corner

Ticks are a bloodsucking parasite that can spread various diseases, including Lyme disease. You may have heard of them recently in connection with Babesiosis, a disease which is normally only found in dogs that have been abroad but has recently been found in some dogs which have not travelled. The most common ticks in the UK are Ixodes spp. but Dermacentor reticulatus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (which can both spread Babesia) are also uncommonly

found. Symptoms of tickborne diseases are normally vague and can include lethargy, inappetance and fever. As diagnosis and treatment can be challenging, trying to reduce the risk of exposure to these diseases is preferred – by avoiding tick-heavy areas in the summer months, and checking your pet daily for ticks (and removing any found using a tick-remover). There are also several parasite treatments that are designed to repel and/or kill ticks, please contact us if you would like to discuss these. Tick numbers rise during the
