As you read this, the seasonal and New Year celebrations will have been and gone but we do hope that you have all had a lovely time. How to “treat” yourself correctly How are you treating yourself when you need to reward yourself, or bring some on–the-spot happiness into your life? Is it via a concept you have carried on from childhood that is no longer serving you? The concept of a “treat” starts form an early age. When you were sick you would be offered “treat” foods to bring you happiness amongst your pain. When your team won the netball final you would celebrate the victory at a fast-food restaurant. Then, when you were dumped by your first boyfriend, your girlfriends would bring the chocolate and ice- cream – because this is how we are taught to “treat: ourselves. This concept of a “treat” becomes a burden in our adult life, when we reach for similar rewards too regularly. PAGE 10
Life can be hard week after week – and we deserve a reward at the end of it. Friday comes and our pleasure state kicks in. You collapse on the coach knowing you deserve some happiness in your life. You eye off the bottle of wine or the chocolate hamper the client gave you as a gift, and by Saturday they are all gone. The answer. On Monday plan how you are going to reward your efforts each week. When you know it’s going to be a big week and all you can think about is the too far off weekend (if you get one), plan a healthier reward. Book in that massage, plan a trip to spa with a girlfriend, or just simply buy a coffee bean body scrub, a candle and book out the bathroom for the night. Have a healthy, life-giving treat waiting for you every Friday night and change your downward “treat” spiral.

Sausages And Puy Lentils If you fancy a change from the usual sausage and mash why not go Continental? Tasty Toulouse sausages wrapped in pancetta and served on a bed of flavoursome puy lentils make the perfect mid-week meal. Serves 4 Ready in 40 minutes
225g puy lentils 225g shallots, peeled and halved 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp brown sugar 150ml vegetable stock 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 8 Toulouse or chunky pork sausages 8 rashers pancetta or smoked streaky bacon, stretched with the back of a knife 2 tsp clear honey 3 tbsp chopped fresh flat leaf parsley 1 Place the lentils in a pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. 2 Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a deep frying pan and fry the shallots for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until just starting to soften. Sprinkle over the brown sugar and cook for a further 8-10 minutes until the shallots are golden and caramelised. 3 Drain the lentils and add to the frying pan with the stock, vinegar and 2 tsp of the mustard. Simmer for about 15 minutes until the lentils are just tender. Stir occasionally and add a little more stock, if necessary.

Try your local butcher or deli or visit a farmers’ market to find the best quality Continental-style sausages. If you can’t find Toulouse sausages, Lincolnshire, Cumberland or pork and leek varieties will work just as well.

What if there is no need to change?
