Editors’ Letter Welcome to the March/April issue of Chiltern View (Thame Area) magazine. This Winter has been described as one of, if not ‘the’ wettest on record. We have been relatively lucky compared to the awful flood damage in some parts of the country but all the same, there has still been some serious damage to property locally. Flooded roads, such as the Chinnor to Thame one, which now has major potholes, have affected journeys and high winds have destroyed garden fences and walls etc. If you have been unlucky enough to have been personally affected by our adverse weather, then we have a large number of trades people in Chiltern View who may be able to help. We are looking forward though and there are some signs of Spring around with new bulbs just shooting through the wet ground. We will start thinking about our gardens again so why not cheer yourselves up with a visit to Waterperry Gardens (pages 6 & 7) or visit the fantastic Tiggywinkles Wildlife Centre that is hosting another great art show in April (page 24). Please remember that not only do we have the printed magazines but you can also see us online at www.chilterndirectories.co.uk or, now that we have embraced social media, why not follow us on Twitter or like our Facebook page. Until next time

Recipe: Easy Lamb Rogan Dhansak This recipe does use fresh ingredients but ‘cheats’ a little by using a jar of sauce rather than creating it from scratch which saves time, but still produces a delicious and authentic dish. Unlike many curry type dishes, the lentils make this very thick so there’s no need for rice. It reheats perfectly and so can be cooked the day before ready to eat at short notice the next day. Serves 4 to 6 Ready in 4 hours 800g diced leg of lamb or lamb steaks 3 whole peppers, red, green, yellow, sliced. 1 chopped and diced onion 2 carrots peeled and finely diced 2 sticks of celery chopped and finely diced 2 jars of Rogan Josh sauce (recommend Loyd Grosman) Half a teacup of dried red lentils 2 – 4 whole red chillies sliced Bunch of fresh coriander Olive oil Salt and pepper For serving, naan bread and sour cream Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas Mark 2. Add a splash of olive oil to a frying pan and cook the onions, carrot and celery until they take on a bit of colour, then put these into a large casserole pot.

Pour in the two jars of Rogan Josh, then add a bit of water to the jars, put the lid back on and shake. Chop half the coriander and add to the pot with the liquid from the jars and stir thoroughly. You need the casserole pot filled to near the top, so add water if necessary. Don’t worry if it looks a bit watery, the lentils at the end will thicken it all up. Put into the oven, giving it a stir after about 2 hours. After 3.5 hours sprinkle over lentils and stir in. Put back into the oven for another 40 minutes. Just before serving sprinkle the rest of the fresh coriander on top and then serve with naan bread, and sour cream.

In the same pan put about half the diced lamb and fry until sealed, then put into casserole pot, repeat with the rest of the lamb. Fry the peppers for a couple of minutes, then put them into casserole pot with a pinch of salt and a good grind of pepper. Add the chillies to taste – 4 chillies will give a medium heat but use fewer chillies and remove the seeds if you don’t like it too hot. PAGE 12

Famous People of the Chilterns:

JOHN HAMPDEN 1594 – 1643

John Hampden is one of this area’s most famous historical figures, a rebel who stood up for his beliefs and played a key role on the Parliamentary side in the Civil War. Statues of John Hampden in Aylesbury’s Market Square, and the central lobby of the House of Commons, commemorate this controversial man whom his contemporaries called ‘The Patriot’.

On the outbreak of war, Hampden formed his own regiment and led them in battle. His eldest son was killed in a skirmish at Chenies Manor and he himself was wounded at the Battle of Chalgrove Field, near Watlington, when his troops were ambushed by Prince Rupert’s Royalist cavalry. He was carried to Thame where he survived six days and died on 24th June 1643. Grieving colleagues carried his body through the night for burial in the church of St Mary Magdalen, next to Hampden House in Great Hampden.

First cousin to Oliver Cromwell, John Hampden was descended from an ancient Buckinghamshire family who owned Hampden House, in Great Hampden in Buckinghamshire. He went to Lord Williams’s School in Thame and served as MP for various seats including Wendover and Buckinghamshire. His first wife was Elizabeth Symeon of Pyrton, near Watlington, with whom he had nine children. Noted for his “flowing courtesy to all men”, he was a skilled and clever debater in Parliament and had a special aptitude for committee work.

PAGE 14

Today, a monument to John Hampden in St Mary Magdalen Church commemorates the life of this man of great integrity. Nearby, a Ship Money Memorial is located on Honor End Lane, north of Prestwood (postcode HP16 9QZ). Hampden House is not open to the public but can be seen from the waymarked Chiltern Way circular walk nearby. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Images supplied: John Hampden

He became a powerful influence in the struggle between Charles I and Parliament that culminated in the Civil War. In 1637 Hampden refused to pay the 20 shillings Ship Money on his Stoke Mandeville property – a tax which would assist the king in bypassing Parliament. He was made a test case and, although judgement went against him, he became a popular hero. In 1641 Parliament passed the Grand Remonstrance of grievances against the king, put together by a number of people including John Hampden. Hampden was accused of High Treason but eluded capture. 6,000 Buckinghamshire men walked to London in his support, with copies of the Remonstrance in their hats.

Waterperry Gardens Waterperry Gardens is more than just beautiful gardens, it is home to a Gallery and Gift Barn, a Garden Shop and Plant Centre, a fantastic Teashop and a Museum of Rural Life. There are a whole host of events held throughout the year and a full programme of arts, crafts and gardening courses run on site. It truly is a hidden gem amongst Oxfordshire’s rolling countryside just a few miles from Thame and the M40. The stunning 8 acre ornamental gardens are bursting back to life as spring is in the air, with Scillas, crocus (spring bulbs) and Brunneran blooming in March. April brings the county flower of Oxfordshire to the gardens as Fritillaries fill the wild flower meadows and May leads the gardens into full bloom as the herbaceous border flourishes until late September. There really is something special to see every month of the year. The Plant Centre and Garden Shop are a gardens lovers paradise, customers can take a piece of Waterperry home with them as most of the plants on sale are propagated from the gardens and grown on site in the nursery. The Garden Shop has a great range of garden sundries, tools, bulbs and seeds, including Waterperry apple juice. The delicious juice is made from Waterperry grown apples and juiced on site in the Orchards. The Gallery and Gift Barn are a shoppers delight with unique ideas for the home and garden along with some great gift ideas for family and friends. It truly is a paradise for tranquil PAGE 28

There are also ways to be involved without attending the meetings which are just as important - shopping, accounts, administration, transport, catering, fundraising and preparing materials for activities. It is incredibly rewarding and fun. If you are interested please contact: Mrs Kathryn Shorter, klshorter80@gmail.com For more information on Girlguiding, visit the website www.girlguiding.org.uk RSPB Aylesbury Group We are a friendly local group interested in birds, wildlife and habitat.
