Editors’ Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View (Thame Area) Well what an exciting few months we all have to look forward to in Thame. We have been really busy here at Chiltern View trying to keep up to date with everything and we have included lots of information about many different events in this issue. Firstly, there is the ‘Music in the Park’ festival taking place on May 4th (page 4). This was a really popular event last year and promises to be even better this year. There will be something for everybody; a real family day out. The following month there are two events that are a highly anticipated part of the Thame calendar and one that was in danger of not actually happening this year. The Thame Carnival was nearly cancelled but thankfully is still going ahead (thanks to a local Thame resident!) and people from in and around Thame can come together and celebrate and join the parade on June 14th (page 8). The very next day on June 15th, is the Annual Duck Race (page 16). This very individual and popular event, run by the Thame Round Table has been well supported for over 10 years. Definitely worth going along and we thought it looked so good that we used a picture as our front cover. All these events help raise valuable funds towards local causes so by having fun, you can also be helping to raise money for the community. Please take a look in our community pages for listings of many other events also taking place soon. Until next time

Recipe

Pizza Turnovers Ideal for a lunchbox filler, picnic or afternoon snack, this twist on a traditional pizza turns this dish into something that resembles a blend of a Cornish pasty and savoury pastry. Serve with a crisp green salad for a larger meal. Equipment: Flat tray, covered with baking parchment Method: Preheat the oven to 180°c or gas mark 3-4. To make the pizza sauce, chop the onion and pepper finely and put in a pan with the oil on a medium heat. When the onion is soft add the passata and the tomato puree, stir in well, add the oregano and salt and pepper and leave to simmer for 5 minutes. When cooked take off the stove and leave to cool. Take the puff pastry and roll onto a floured surface about 3-4 mm thick. Cut into 12 equal squares. Beat the egg in a cup and brush the squares. Spoon the tomato sauce diagonally along each square, place on the sliced mushrooms and the chopped ham. PAGE 12

Place a handful of mozzarella cheese on each square and in the opposite corners and squeeze them to seal in the filling. Place on a baking sheet. Brush the outside with egg and bake on the middle shelf in the oven until pastry is golden brown and cooked underneath. Ingredients : 500g packet ready roll puff pastry 1 egg 1 onion 400g tub passata ½ green pepper 2 tablespoons cooking oil 2 tablespoons tomato puree Pepper and salt Teaspoon oregano 5 thinly sliced mushrooms 4 slices of ham chopped 250g Grated Mozzarella cheese

Thame Carnival – Theme:

The World of Sport and Recreation THAME Carnival looked in danger of having to be cancelled this year, because there was no one to take the lead in organising it. But thankfully, this week, Thame resident and business woman, Sue MartinDownhill, has stepped forward and volunteered to lead the Carnival committee which includes some town councillors. The 2014 Carnival will now go ahead on Saturday, June 14, 2014, and appropriately enough as Sue is a qualified Squash coach, the theme will be World of Sport & Recreation . So, if anyone/organisation/club would like to enter a float in the parade or have a stall at the event, they can contact Sue on: suedownhill@gmail.com

Rec. after the carnival. Martial Arts groups could get involved, Art groups etc As well as the schools’ floats, which are always splendid in a effort to out-do each other and win the schools’ category prize, Thame Youth Theatre are getting involved and promise to come up with something amazing; Thame Lions and Round Table will be manning a real ale bar, and there are rumours of a ‘flash mob’ appearing with some street theatre and dance! The Thame Classic Vehicle club will be leading the procession with an array of beautiful and nostalgic classic and vintage vehicles, and many of the local clubs and groups of all kinds (the theme is The World of Sport & Recreatio!) hockey, swimming, choral music, as well as the arts, are all being encouraged to join in and promote all the wonderful activities there are in the town to get involved with. The MP Cricket Academy, based in Thame, are also planning demonstrations and some surprise items, and the Southern Road Recreation area will be filled with stalls and demonstrations of local sports and arts activities, as well as yummy food and drink outlets to fuel the fun!

Sue particularly would like lots of music to characterise the carnival procession this year and would like to hear from any musicians or music groups who would like to take part, and dancers who could perform in the arena at Southern Road PAGE 22

A stage area is also being planned to feature local bands, musicians and performers. Contact: suedownhill@gmail.com for more information

Thame Duck Race 2014 – It’s Time To Get Quacking! Thame annual duck race will take place this year on Sunday 15th June 2014, once again helping to raise money for local causes. The duck race involves tipping nearly 2,500 individually numbered yellow rubber ducks into the River Thame from old Town Bridge and following them as they paddle down stream to the finish. The first three ducks over the line will win their lucky ticket holders a cash prize. This wonderfully quirky event has been running for over 10 years now and continues to go from strength to strength. As befits such a unique spectacle, Captain Ducky, Thame’s very own pirate and the scourge of the High Street, leads the fun. He lends his own special brand of mayhem to the race each year, with a ship that often proves to be less than seaworthy!

The result is an eccentric and quintessentially British event, providing fun for all the family and supporting local causes at the same time. The event is run each year by Thame Round Table, a social club for men under the age of 45, which also takes a strong interest in PAGE 26

local community projects. As well as a busy social calendar through the year, the Tablers are also behind Thame’s annual Santa float at Christmas time as well. Tim Lancaster, the Chairman of Thame Round Table, commented: “We really enjoy putting on this event each year, providing a much loved spectacle for the Town and raising thousands of pounds for local causes.”

Tickets can be bought from Thame Round Table’s stall at the town carnival (the day before the race), from the Town Council Information Centre and the Cross Keys pub. They can also be bought on the day of the race.

Local Molly Maid Crowned Newcomer Of The Year MOLLY MAID, the UK’s leading professional domestic cleaning company, has just returned from their National Convention entitled “The Winning Formula” following an inspirational three days where Janine Symondson, from MOLLY MAID Thame, truly shone. This year, MOLLY MAID turned The Coombe Abbey Hotel, Binley, Warwickshire, with its impressive setting, into its home for three days. The Convention was concluded with a MOLLY MAID star-studded Gala dinner and awards ceremony where Janine Symondson, who runs MOLLY MAID Thame, was awarded the prestigious title of Newcomer of the Year Award 2013. Janine was selected for this award because of her high sales in her first full year of trading. She is also growing phenomenally in 2014 and has just put on her 4th MOLLY MAID car.

She has successfully achieved this by providing local customers with a high standard of service and quality customer care as well as comprehensive marketing activities creating brand awareness in her area. Janine said, “I am thrilled to be winning this award. Our teams do a fantastic job at keeping homes sparkling, and our loyal customers are a testament to that. I believe in the strong brand of MOLLY MAID and am determined to continue in my quest to become even more successful in the future”

Much Ado in the Open Air Thame Players are staging an unmissable outdoor production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in the gardens of The Elms in Thame this July. The Elms dates back to the Edwardian era and the play, one of the Bard’s best comedies, will be set in the ‘roaring twenties’, a time of swing, jazz, and the Charleston - complete with flappers. The story, a tale of light and dark, involves two couples who fall in love. One of the couples, Beatrice and Benedick, seem unable to express their true feelings for each other until wittily tricked into it by their friends. The other pair, Hero and Claudio, fall in love at first sight but must survive a wicked plot to foil their marriage plans. Although the happiness of both couples appears threatened, help arrives from an unlikely source and the joyful finale sees everyone dancing to celebrate a double wedding. PAGE 30

The play is being performed at The Elms from Tuesday 8th to Saturday 12th July inclusive Start time 7.45 pm but why not come early and bring a picnic (doors open 6.30pm) There is outdoor seating and a bar and refreshments will be available Free parking in Upper High Street car park Tickets £10 (concessions £1off) from Tickets Anywhere Greyhound Walk Thame Tel 01844 217228 or online from www.thameplayers.co.uk (booking fee applies) Party discounts available Thame Players are grateful to the owners of The Elms, Rectory Homes, for permission to stage Much Ado About Nothing in the grounds.

Music in the Park 2014 – Put Sunday May 4th in your diaries for Thame’s fantastic family music festival! Be sure to reserve Sunday May 4th for Music in the Park 2014. That’s one week earlier than normal, which will give adults the welcome respite of the following day’s Bank Holiday and avoids the start of most school exams. With a wide variety of music and dance on offer, there’s sure to be something for everyone. The event will feature two main stages with live music and dance, and an acoustic stage. Madness tribute band Ska Souls will be headlining a programme that includes big band music from Little Bill’s Big Band; 80s covers from M.F.U.; original indie music from Sin Fiction; harp music from Sarah Goss; and a range of dance acts including Urban Strides.

Have fun dancing the day away or chill out with a leisurely picnic. Of course, there will also be all the usual goodies you’d expect at a festival, including tasty real ales, a wide variety of delicious foods, fun activities for children and adults, and a range of trade stalls.

PAGE 32

Elms Park lighting project going ahead

The funds raised from Music in the Park, combined with matched funding from Thame Town Council, are now sufficient to enable the installation of lighting in Elms Park. This will allow people to enjoy the park and feel safer in the evenings. The project is currently out to tender and the lighting will hopefully be in place before the event.

Keep an eye on the website (www.musicinthepark.org.uk) or Facebook page (http://www.facebook. com/MusicInTheParkThame) for news of tickets and the full programme of events.

Famous People of the Chilterns: Charles de Gaulle 1890 - 1970

Charles de Gaulle began his career as a professional officer in the French army, and distinguished himself in the First World War. In 1940, when France surrendered to Germany during WW2, de Gaulle and other French officers escaped to England. He arrived with barely a hundred French francs, thrust into his hand by a colleague as he boarded his plane. On his arrival, Winston Churchill famously invited him to broadcast to the French people on the BBC, calling for resistance against Nazi occupation. Armed with an unflinching belief in his country and his own destiny (he frequently referred to himself in the third person) de Gaulle set about forming the Free French movement, claiming sovereignty over France.

at Berkhamsted’s Roman Catholic church in Park View Road, now no longer a church. On Remembrance Sunday in November 1941, de Gaulle was persuaded to take the salute at the marchpast of the local Home Guard in the nearby village of Potten End, an unlikely event recorded in photographs. Immediately after the war he presided over the interim French Government and was president of France from 1959-69. His wartime Chilterns neighbours could have had no idea that the man in their midst was destined to become the most influential ruler of France in its modern history. They would be even less likely to guess that he is the only one-time Chilterns resident to have an international airport named after him! The Ashridge Estate is owned by the National Trust now and is a great place to visit for a walk, bike ride or picnic with lots of woodland trails and viewpoints. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Find out more about our work on the website above.

For this he was accused of treason and given a death sentence by the official Vichy-France government. In 1941 de Gaulle and his family moved into Rodinghead, a house in the Ashridge Estate area near Berkhamsted. The beautiful surroundings of the Chilterns countryside would have provided some tranquillity from the rigours of being a wartime leader in exile. As a devout Catholic, the leader of the Free French worshipped regularly PAGE 36

Charles de Gaulle was one of France’s most powerful presidents of the 20th century. During the Second World War he had to flee France and found refuge in the Chilterns.
