Editors’ Letter Welcome to the September/October issue of Chiltern View Thame area. Fingers crossed that, as you are reading this, the gorgeous summer weather that we have been having, is continuing. Our offices are at the top of a building in Chinnor and it does get hot but we can get a lovely breeze with the windows open and we are lucky to have an air conditioning unit for when we are very hot and possibly a little stressed, when deadlines are upon us! Thame has two more big events that we are covering in this issue. The Food Festival which is growing in popularity each year and has such a lovely atmosphere with all the aromas, food and drink samples to taste, and the stage with all the excellent presentations. There is also the Thame Show which is back on the Thursday by popular demand and promises to be a day packed full of interesting things to watch or even get involved with. Fun for all the family. We do hope that you are all enjoying reading our magazines and please let us know if you have any good ideas for content that you feel we might be missing. We like to hear your feedback. Until the next time

Famous People of the Chilterns:
Jerome K Jerome
The timeless medieval village of Ewelme, near Wallingford, is a fitting resting place for the author Jerome K Jerome, who wrote memorably about the charms of Old England. His best-known work is Three Men in a Boat - a comedy novel about a boating holiday on the Thames taken by Jerome and two friends, plus a dog called Montmorency. In the story they row along the river from London to Oxford, and so pass many miles of Chilterns scenery and landmarks. Remarkably, all the pubs and inns mentioned in the book are still open today, including the George and Dragon at Wargrave, the Swan at Pangbourne and the Bull at Streatley. In 2005 the comedians Griff Rhys Jones, Dara O’Briain and Rory McGrath re-created the journey for a TV programme. Inspired by his honeymoon on the Thames, Three Men in Boat was published in 1889, bringing instant fame and fortune for Ewelme © John Morris Jerome and cementing his love of the river. The Chilterns landscape must also have made an impression because it appears, from letters, that he lived in turn at Monks Corner, near Marlow, then at Wood End House in Marlow, Ridge End in Marlow Common and, finally, at a farmhouse near Ewelme. All are still private houses. Jerome Klapka - brother of Paulina Deodata, Blandina Dominica and Milton Melancthon Jerome may have inherited his sense of humour from his parents, but little else. Brought up in poverty in London’s East End, he worked Jerome K Jerome grave variously as a clerk, a hack journalist, schoolmaster and an actor (playing “every role in Hamlet except Ophelia”). His first PAGE 16
humorous book appeared in 1885 and he went on to become a prolific writer and editor of The Idler and other magazines. Jerome K Jerome died in 1927 and his ashes were buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church in Ewelme. The grave is marked with a large headstone. The church houses the elaborate tomb of Alice, Duchess of Suffolk, Geoffrey Chaucer’s granddaughter. A covered walkway leads to the cloistered 15th century almshouses, adjacent to the 15th century village school which still operates in its original building. While in Ewelme it is also well worth visiting the pretty watercress beds, restored by the Chiltern Society, and the adjacent nature reserve (www.ewelmewatercressbeds.org). This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Thame Food Festival
Thame has the pick of the crop this autumn with a bumper food festival – Saturday 27th September 2014 Autumn is a brilliant time to visit a food festival and this autumn the pick of the crop will be on show at the Thame Food Festival taking place on Saturday 27th September. Raymond Blanc, Tom Kerridge, Adam Simmonds, Sophie Grigson and a fabulous double act from the boy who bakes Edd Kimber and John Waite, winners of BBC Two’s the Great British Bake Off, will all be highlights at this landmark event in the food calendar. Ride into town on an original London Routemaster Double Decker Bus – possibly even driven by festival compère Ken Bruce from BBC Radio 2 and wend your way through the pretty market town whose streets will be packed on the day with over 150 stalls of local and artisan produce.
Stock up on some Cotswold cured meats and salamis, cutting terrines and chillis grown on Oxfordshire farms then drink local ales from Brill’s Vale Brewery or at The James Figg pop-up pub, named after one of the town’s most famous sons and England’s first undisputed champion boxer from the 1700s. Feast on some Filipino fusion food, hot smoked beef PAGE 26
rolls from grass fed beef produced on the hills between Brill and Boarstall seven miles from Thame or delicious authentic Moroccan dishes at the Belazu pop-up in aid of both the Isis Academy and the food festival coffers.
Try your hand at sausage making or Italian cookery at one of the many hands-on work shops, which include sessions for teenagers and young foodies as well as anyone seeking inspiration from their kitchen cupboard. Learn how to bake perfect loaves of bread and become proficient at wine tasting. Sessions run all day at a number of locations throughout the festival and can be booked in advance by going to the web site www.thamefoodfestival.co.uk Festival ambassador Raymond Blanc says, “The Thame Food Festival is a special day in my calendar and a day I truly love. Being festival ambassador is another of my passions. How wonderful it is to have seen the event grow from modest beginnings to the fantastic celebration of local and artisan food and drink it is today. Don’t miss it.” Enjoy a bumper harvest this autumn at the Thame Food Festival, a fantastic free foodie day out for the family. The festival takes place from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 27th September in the heart of Thame town centre. For more information please go to www.thamefoodfestival.co.uk.

7 Easy Ways to Save Money on Your Heating Oil With over 519,000 homes off the gas grid in the South East, many families in our community use oil to heat their homes. If you’re on oil and looking to make a saving on your next order, check out our useful tips for smart, simple ways to cut down your costs! 1) Watch the weather - Oil prices typically decline during spring and summer, when temperatures are high and demand is low. By topping-up your tank this summer, you can take advantage of these great prices and stay warm in winter for less. 2) Compare prices - You might have a regular supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around, or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil. 3) Buy in bulk - Instead of topping-up your oil levels on a regular basis, fill it up in one go to cut down on delivery costs and get a great bulk-buy price. 4) Order early - Set a regular reminder, mark it on your calendar or simply plan ahead of time to beat the rush, avoid costly emergency orders and take advantage of cheaper delivery options. 5) Add an additive - An inexpensive way to upgrade your fuel, oil additives prevent tank sludge build-up, improve overall efficiency and save you
PAGE 28
money by reducing expensive maintenance costs, operating problems and boiler breakdowns. 6) Group buy - Buying as a group is the best way to get a discount on your oil, but did you know that you can also do it online? Websites like BoilerJuice automatically group your delivery with others in your area, to help you qualify for group discounts every day of the week. 7) Spread the cost with a payment plan - While payment schemes often mean an expensive contract with a specific supplier, signing up for a monthly payment plan with an impartial site gives you the ability to spread your oil costs, while guaranteeing you the best quote from a range of suppliers across the UK.

‘Benson and the Great War’
WW1 Centenary Event at Benson Parish Hall on Saturday 20th September 2014 In order to commemorate the centenary of World War One, Benson Village is holding a ‘Benson and The Great War’ event at Benson Parish Hall, from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 20th September.
Much research has taken place into the lives and deaths of the service personnel from Benson who fell in battle during WW1. Information about the life of each name on the Benson War memorial has been collected and we intend to provide details of their stories
PAGE 30
and any historical artefacts, both public and personal, as part of the exhibition. There will also be posters, photographs, music and a model battle. The event opens with the Roke and Benson Brass Band who will play WW1 themed songs, then accompany a Commemoration Service. Light refreshments will be provided by the Benson WI. Later at 3pm, the RAF Benson Military Wives Choir will give a concert. We hope that this event will be of interest to everybody. Come and see how the villagers of Benson lived at that time and commemorate the centenary of this turning point in history. Anne Fowler Publicity Officer for ‘Benson and the Great War’

Recipe
Courgette Quiche There’s an abundance of home grown courgettes in the shops at the moment – or you may have some growing in your garden. Make the most of them with this tasty quiche which can be served warm or cold. Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 20 minutes, plus chilling FOR THE PASTRY 225g plain flour 100g lightly salted butter, chilled and cubed 1 medium egg yolk beaten FOR THE FILLING 1 tbsp olive oil 3 courgettes, 1 sliced and 2 chopped 2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 75g mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 3 medium eggs 150ml milk 100ml crème fraiche 50g mature Cheddar cheese, finely grated 1 tomato, thinly sliced 2 tsp dried Italian mixed herbs 1 To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add a pinch of salt and the cubed butter and rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. 2 Add the egg yolk and 2-3 tbsp ice cold water and mix with a round bladed knife until the mixture begins to stick together, adding a little more water, if needed. Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead for just a few seconds on a lightly floured surface until just smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. 3 Roll out the chilled pastry and use to line a 20cm round metal flan tin. Prick the pastry base all over with a fork and chill the in the fridge for 15 PAGE 36
minutes. Line the pastry case with baking paper and fill with baking beans then bake blind on the hot baking sheet for 10-15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and cook for a further 5 minutes until the pastry is pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. 4 Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and fry the courgette slices for 1-2 minutes until just beginning to soften. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside on kitchen paper. 5 Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the shallots, mushrooms and garlic for 5 minutes then add the chopped courgettes and fry for a further 1-2 minutes, stirring until just softened. 6 Spoon the courgette and mushroom mixture into the pastry case. Beat together the eggs, milk, crème fraiche and Cheddar and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Slowly pour into the pastry case over the courgette mixture. 7 Arrange the fried courgette slices and tomato slices on top of the filling and sprinkle with the Italian mixed herbs. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until the filling is set and golden. Serve warm or cold with salad. TIP Add a handful of pine nuts when frying the shallots and mushrooms if liked or scatter some chopped walnuts over the filling before baking.
