Cuttle Brook –
Thame’s very own wildlife haven Nestled between the Oxford Road and the Phoenix Trail, Cuttle Brook nature reserve is probably one of Thame’s best-kept secrets. Covering around 30 acres, the reserve boasts a huge variety of habitats, from wild flower meadows to woodland. Its centrepiece, however, consists of the reed and sedge beds, which are nationally rare. In the summer they become a breeding ground for visiting birds, such as sedge warblers and reed buntings, as well as native wildlife, such as dragonflies and demoiselles. The meadows are a haven for butterflies, moths and bees, and last year, for the first time since a management regime was implemented in 1995, orchids have been seen. The brook itself originates in the Chiltern Hills and meanders through the middle of the reserve, until it eventually meets up with the River Thame. A recent study, carried out by an environmental science student, revealed native crayfish – the White-clawed crayfish, living in the brook. This is a real find as it is a globally threatened species and a conservation priority in the UK and Europe. Cuttle Brook is owned by Thame Town Council and managed by a group of volunteers, working two halfdays per month: every third Sunday and last Wednesday. PAGE 12
Last year Cuttle Brook Conservation Volunteers put in around 856 hours on the reserve, of which a large proportion was spent repairing paths, clearing rubbish, mending boardwalks and generally making it accessible and enjoyable for visitors. The rest of their time is dedicated to managing the wildlife habitats. At the moment Cuttle Brook is largely the domain of dog walkers. However, it is a wonderful resource that could be much better utilised by the people of Thame. There are many paths that criss-cross the reserve, leading to interesting places, such as the pond, the reed beds and the meadows – great places for nature walks and school, or college, field studies. Or why not bring a picnic to enjoy in the family area? If you are looking to get fit in 2013, how about a break from gym? Come and get some exercise in the fresh air with the volunteers. This year they have received funding to replace the main bridge and could do with a few extra pairs of hands. Whatever you do this year, make a date to visit your local nature reserve – you may be surprised at what you discover! Find out more about how you can get involved in the community pages.

Headaches
Headaches? Feeling “muzzy” or lethargic? In our second article on headaches and migraine we look specifically at cervicogenic headaches and neck pain. The term “Cervicogenic” comes from the fact that the pain experienced is due to a problem in the cervical portion of the spine (the neck). Cervicogenic headaches are caused by irritation of joints and muscles in the neck. When neck muscles spasm they can put pressure on nerves that travel to the head and radiate pain into the scalp. Joints in the top of the neck also share a nerve supply with the scalp and can cause pain referral. A whiplash injury is a common cause of this type of headache. The classical symptom of a cervicogenic headache is pain that begins in the neck and progressively moves into the head. Those with the condition often experience a lowered tolerance of pain, making management of the pain sometimes difficult. Head and neck movement, rather than offering relief, can often make the headache worse. The neck usually becomes very tender to the touch upon the onset of the headache and responds very well to Osteopathic treatment. At The Luxton Clinic we treat many patients with headaches and we also treat different types of neck pain. Non-Specific Neck Pain Many people develop a stiff and painful neck for no obvious reason. It may happen after sleeping or sitting in a draught or perhaps after a minor twisting injury, for example while cleaning or gardening. It is the most common type of neck pain and often disappears after a few days. If it doesn’t resolve within a couple of days it is wise to have an examination and treatment before the body begins compensating with altered posture. Tension Most muscles of the body relax completely when they are not being used but some muscles have to work all the time in order to keep your body upright. Muscles at the back of your neck must PAGE 20
always be tensed, otherwise your head would fall forwards when you are sitting or standing. When these muscles work too hard or are not strong enough, it can cause neck pain and tension headaches. People who are worried or under stress often sub-consciously tighten their muscles more than is necessary to hold their head upright. Tension headaches are very common and are often wrongly called migraines. Working at a computer station and sitting slumped with head forward loads the neck muscles and may create tension headaches. Osteopathic Treatment After assessing the function and quality of neck and joint movement, we check the muscle and fascial tension along with its relationship to the spine and head. We apply soft tissue techniques to soften muscle tension with positional release for the fascia. We may follow this up with articulation and encourage joint release where necessary. We also use gentle Cranial Osteopathic techniques to rebalance the rhythmic function of the spine and cranium. Recommended exercises for correcting poor posture are also a part of treatment and consultation.

Lemon Chicken with Tabbouleh This is a great way to turn simple and very economical chicken portions into a delicious Mediterranean-style supper. If you have time, make the tabbouleh a few hours in advance to let the flavours fully develop.
Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes Ingredients 1 lemon, thinly sliced 4 large chicken thigh portions (or 8 small thigh portions) 4 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp clear honey, warmed 225g bulgar wheat (see tip) ½ cucumber, finely diced 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 2 tbsp fresh chopped mint 2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. Push a lemon slice under the skin of each chicken thigh. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken over a medium-high heat until golden brown all over. Transfer to a shallow roasting tin and arrange the rest of the lemon slices around the chicken. 2 Mix together 1 tbsp of the lemon juice with the honey and pour over the chicken. Roast for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. PAGE 24
3 Meanwhile, place the bulgar wheat into a bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Leave for 30 minutes until grains are soft. Stir well and drain off any excess water. 4 Stir in the rest of the olive oil and lemon juice and season with plenty of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cucumber, spring onions, mint and coriander and mix well. Serve the hot roast chicken on the tabbouleh with any juices from the roasting tin poured over. TIP Bulgar wheat is a type of wheat grain that has been parboiled, dried then finely crushed. It is similar to couscous but has more texture and bite. You’ll find it in most large supermarkets or health food shops.

Creature Comforts ‘Hang spring-cleaning!’ cries Mole in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. The critters are emerging from hibernation, and so are we. We’ve picked a selection of the best novels where animals are calling the shots. What better way to welcome in the warmer weather, than with some tales from the riverbank… and beyond? Watership Down by Richard Adams Fiver can sense impending doom. Something very bad is coming to the rabbit warren and fleeing is the only way to save the clan. His brother Hazel knows that Fiver is never wrong and so they embark on the journey of a lifetime to find sanctuary at Watership Down. Crammed full of amazing rabbit folklore, myths, legends and even their own language of ‘Lapine’, we become totally immersed in Fiver and Hazel’s world, carried along on this amazing and perilous journey across southern England. Is that ‘Bright Eyes’ I can hear? War Horse by Michael Morpurgo Based on the true story of a horse named ‘Warrior’, War Horse follows the tale of Joey, a young mount who is sold to the cavalry for service in the First World War and the attempts of his previous owner Albert to bring him home safely. But Albert isn’t old enough to enlist and so sets off under his own steam to try and find his beloved Joey. It’s an amazing story of bravery and friendship, set against the bloodiest of backdrops and you can’t help but gallop alongside the intrepid pair. Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White Wilbur really is ‘some pig’ and it’s up to a spider named Charlotte to tell the world. Bashful and whimsical Wilbur is horrified to learn that he’s facing the chop. His human protector, Fern, might not be able to save him all on her own and it looks PAGE 26
like it’s up to the barn’s resident arachnid to save his bacon. Can Charlotte convince the farmer that Wilbur really is worth hanging onto; how can a spider be that persuasive? Ok, so the clue is in the title but this is a thoroughly charming tale that will have you laying off the sausages, and letting the cobwebs hang around a bit longer, way after you’ve put the book down.
Animal Farm by George Orwell Originally subtitled ‘A Fairy Story’, this was Orwell’s allegory for events leading up to the Russian Revolution and not a light and fluffy bedtime story for children after all. It tackles greed and corruption, injustice and pig-ignorance, if you’ll pardon the pun. Revolution is in the air at Manor Farm when the drunken layabout of a farmer, Mr Jones, forgets to feed his animals. Pigs Napoleon and Snowball lead the rebellion and bring power to all those on four legs. But in time, the uprising takes an unexpected downturn. Remember: ‘All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others’. White Fangby by Jack London Set in Canada during the gold rush at the end of the 1800s, White Fang is the story of a half dog-half wolf hybrid puppy and his attempts to find his place in the world. It’s an epic story of survival, with White Fang struggling against the violent backdrop of the Yukon Territory and then the equally menacing and threatening life that awaits him as he is adopted by American Indian Grey Beaver and attempts to live as a domesticated canine. White Fang’s new life is just as brutal, as he fails to be accepted by other young dogs and so reverts to being the ‘lone wolf’, detached and isolated in the frozen wastelands.

Thame’s fantastic family music festival is back! Put Sunday May 12th in your diaries now! That’s when Thame’s fantastic family festival Music in the Park will take place. With a wide variety of music and dance on offer, there’s sure to be something for everyone. The event will feature two main stages with live music and dance, an acoustic stage and a dedicated electronic music stage.
Have fun dancing the day away or chill out with a leisurely picnic. Of course, there will also be all the usual goodies you’d expect at a festival, including tasty real ales, a wide variety of delicious foods, fun activities for children and adults, and beautiful arts and crafts. The music programme features many local artists as well as acts from further afield. Already confirmed for this year are Hats off to Led Zeppelin, the tribute act that wowed www.chilterndirectories.co.uk
visitors last year, as well as the Dung Beatles (Beatles tribute act), the Muttz Knuttz, Little Bill’s Big Band, Stone Cold Broke and Bootlegger. Headlining will be Oxfordshire-based Bolt from the Blue, who will thrill visitors with a high-energy show packed with soul and R&B classics. Last year’s Music in the Park attracted some 3,500 visitors and raised more than £8,000 for the Friends of Elms Park to help improve the Park for the people of Thame.
