Editors’ Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View Thame area magazine. This is going to be a busy couple of months for Thame. Music in the Park is on May 3rd, The Town Carnival on Saturday 13th June and the ever popular Thame and District Round Table Duck Race on Sunday June 14th (see p. 22). Because the Carnival is one of the main events in Thame’s social calendar year, we wanted to help to promote it on our front cover and with a full page inside as well (see p.16). It looks to be just as exciting as always and the movie theme certainly gives everyone lots of scope for fun costume ideas. Fingers crossed for good weather for all these events and have a great time everyone. Until the next time

Famous People of the Chilterns: THE SHELLEYS
One of the most famous literary couples of the nineteenth century lived for a time in Marlow. Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley had a short and eventful marriage but during this time they both produced some well-loved and enduring work. The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, best known for poems like Ozymandias and To a Skylark, went to Oxford University, from which he was expelled for an atheist publication. The 19 year old Shelley eloped with 16 year old Harriet Westbrook, with whom he had a daughter. In 1814 he left her and ran off to Italy with Mary Godwin, daughter of the political philosopher William Godwin and the ground-breaking feminist and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft. Percy and Mary rented a house next door to Byron on the shores of Lake Geneva. After an evening discussing “the nature of the principle of life”, Mary passed a sleepless night imagining the horrors of ‘creating’ a living creature. Searching for the subject of a good story, she rejoiced: “I have found it! What terrified me will terrify others; and I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow.” In 1816, after their return to England, Harriet Westbrook drowned herself in the Serpentine and Percy and Mary promptly married. The couple came to Marlow, in Buckinghamshire, and set up home at Albion House in West Street. In this elegant setting beside the broad and placid Thames, Mary completed Frankenstein, recapturing the horrors conceived amongst the rugged backdrop of the Alps. Whilst in Marlow she also edited their continental journal
published as A History of a Six Weeks Tour. Percy, meanwhile, was working on The Revolt of Islam and revolutionary Mary Shelley tracts written under the name of ‘The Hermit of Marlowe’. In 1818 the Shelleys moved to Italy and in 1822 Percy was drowned while sailing, in a sudden storm. Mary returned to London to devote herself to compiling and publishing her husband’s work. Albion House, now named Shelley Cottages, is a private house but is marked by a plaque. It is included in the Marlow Society’s Marlow Town Walk: www.marlowsociety.org.uk This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Quack! Quack! It’s Back! Thame Duck Race 2015 Every year on the morning after Thame Carnival, Thame & District Round Table takes to the river and stages their annual duck race. The event, which takes place on the river in Thame itself, has become a family favourite in Thame’s calendar over the years and regularly attracts a good crowd. The race is effectively a giant floating lottery, which involves dropping more than 2,000 individually numbered rubber ducks into the River Thame. If you have bought a ticket with a number that matches one of the first three ducks over the line, you win a cash prize. All other proceeds from the ticket sales are donated to local causes. Adding to the fun is the irrepressible pirate, Captain Ducky. A children’s favourite and housewives’ choice (albeit quite often his choice, not theirs),

the Captain is there to see that the event proceeds, despite his attempts to organise it! Over the years he has followed the ducks down river in a variety of craft, but has ended up in the drink often enough to qualify for an RNLI loyalty card. This year’s duck race takes place on Sunday 14th June. The race starts on the old town bridge, which is accessed from the bottom of Priest End, behind St Mary’s church. Gates open at 10.30am and the race will start at 11.00. For further information go to www.thameroundtable.org

Thame Players Summer Programme Yes Prime Minister – 5th to 9th May at 7.45pm In May we have the Thame Players Production of Yes, Prime Minister, by Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, which runs from 5th to 9th May – and yes, that is election week, and yes, it was deliberate. We’ve almost sold out on election night already. See below for the winners of our last competition. Guitarra Romantica – Sunday 17th May 7.45 pm Robert Drury appeared at The Players Theatre last September to perform his much acclaimed tribute to Neil Diamond. The show was extremely popular. Robert showed himself to be not only a good singer, with a voice very much like Neil Diamond, but he also demonstrated his remarkable expertise on the guitar. Now he returns to the theatre to perform an evening of classical guitar music that is sure to delight all lovers of good music. Playing many well-known classical and popular pieces this show promises to make a most enjoyable evening’s entertainment. The Dung Beatles Perform ‘The Beatles’ Years - 1963 – 1970’ Friday 22nd May 7.45 pm Since they got together in 2013 The Dung Beatles have played over 60 gigs from festivals and private parties to corporate events, clubs and theatres. In 2013 they played live on BBC Radio and in 2014 crammed 200 Beatles fans into Liverpool’s world famous Cavern Club. And now they are coming to the Players Theatre. This show is a must for every Beatle fan.
Two phones, two husbands, two sitting rooms on one stage! Genius.
Set from How the Other Half Loves at the Players Theatre in March 2015.
An Audience with Giles Brandreth – Sunday 31st May 7.45 pm The next celebrity to appear at The Players Theatre will be Gyles Brandreth. Actor, writer, humourist and former Conservative MP, Gyles Brandreth presents an evening of extraordinary true stories, hilarious anecdotes and unexpected revelations inspired by his unlikely career in TV, politics and the theatre. His revealing and deliciously indiscreet tales feature a glittering cast of characters past and present. The Taming of the Shrew – 7th July to 11th July at 7.45 pm In July we have the next Thame Players Production of The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare which is sure to prove extremely popular so book early. All tickets for Thame Players productions and for the visiting shows are available on our website at www.thameplayers.co.uk or from Spear Travels on 01844 217228.
Congratulations to Margaret Admans who was the lucky winner of the March / April competition.
