Editors’ Letter Welcome to the Festive, November/December issue of Chiltern View Thame magazine. Although we have lots of information about exciting Christmas events, we haven’t forgotten about Remembrance Sunday on November 8th. We also have other more local articles such as Thame Remembers (p28), Thame High Street (p14) and Christmas Community (p23). Our Travel article in this issue (p30) features several interesting Christmas Markets to visit; brilliant for those who like to get away for a couple of days and to find more unusual presents. Make sure you enter the Thame Players competition for a family ticket to see the pantomime (p12). If you have an event to share but have left it too late to be included in the magazine then just send it on an email to thameview@live.co.uk or give us a call on 07712 816336 and we will do our best to spread the word via social media. We have a very active Facebook page and many Twitter followers so why not ‘like’ us and ‘follow’ us for up to date community information. We would like to wish all of our readers and advertisers a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy 2016. Once again we will not be sending Christmas cards but this year we will be making a donation to the Christmas Community in Thame organisation, which provides Christmas lunches and companionship to the elderly and vulnerable members of the local community. Until the New Year

Recipe

Marmalade and Mustard Glazed Gammon Glazed gammon is a Christmas favourite – delicious hot from the oven as a festive supper or served cold as part of the Boxing Day buffet! Serves 6-8 Ready in 2 hours 45 minutes, plus cooling

2.5kg smoked gammon joint 1 onion, peeled and quartered 1 large carrot, peeled and chopped 2 fresh bay leaves, plus extra to garnish Few black peppercorns 1 tbsp whole cloves 3 tbsp shredless orange marmalade, warmed 2 tbsp runny honey 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 3 tbsp light soft brown sugar Orange wedges, to garnish 1 Place the gammon joint in a large deep pan with the onion, carrot, bay leaves and peppercorns. Pour over enough cold water to cover the joint. 2 Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface using a slotted spoon. Reduce the heat, cover and leave to simmer for 1½ hours, topping up the water level as needed.

4 Mix together the marmalade, honey, mustard and sugar and spoon all over the gammon fat. Roast in the oven for 40-45 minutes, basting regularly with the glaze and pan juices until the fat is golden. Serve hot or cold garnished with fresh bay leaves and orange wedges.

Tip Add 1 tsp each ground cumin and ground coriander or a splash of Tabasco sauce to the glaze for a bit of extra spice, if liked.

3 Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4. Lift out the gammon from the pan and place in a foil-lined roasting tin (discard the cooking liquid). Leave to cool for 10 minutes. Cut away the skin from the gammon, leaving a thin layer of fat and score the fat into diamonds. Stud the scored fat with the cloves in an even pattern. PAGE 8

A Good Read

Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R Tolkien Mention Tolkien and you will undoubtedly think of his epic adventures - The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. But as father to four children Tolkien had a softer more whimsical side. Each December over the course of their childhood he wrote and illustrated detailed letters from Father Christmas; letters populated by a cast of characters which included elves, goblins and a clumsy polar bear. Through these letters, Tolkien entertained his children with stories of high-jinks at the North Pole. It’s true the language can seem a little formal and stilted at times by today’s standards, but they were written in the 1920s and 30s and Tolkien is as much a product of his time as any author. His affection for his children shines through every page regardless. As they were written for real children the reader receives an insight into what the interests of the Tolkien children might have been: prehistoric cave paintings, fireworks, the night sky and animals to name a few. All the letters are lavishly illustrated with fantastical intricate pictures, and these bring the stories to life.

alone in front of a roaring fire with a cup of hot chocolate, or for sharing with your own children. Perfect seasonal fare.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss Long before Jim Carrey took the character to the big screen, this book had captured the hearts of generations of children.

It’s a marvellous story of seasonal redemption in the best tradition. It’s every bit as timeless as Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The lonely Grinch hates Christmas; the noise, the feasting, the singing. His loathing of the festivities is focussed on the merry little Whos, who really know how to throw a Christmas party. He decides that this year he will put a stop to the proceedings and sets about wrecking their big day. Will he succeed? Well it’s no secret to say that happily his plans are thwarted in the nicest way possible, as he discovers that the most important thing about Christmas is love, friendship and sense of belonging to a community. This is Seuss at his best; a riotous rhyming adventure and an adorably grumpy anti-hero. By Sarah Davey

Even non-Tolkien fans should love this charming book. It’s wonderful for reading PAGE 10

Thame Players Christmas programme Rum Doxy, who have become regular visitors to the Thame Players Theatre in the last few years, bring a youthful exuberance and skillful acting to our stage. This latest offering is a modern comedy which represents a departure from the adaptations of Shakespeare plays they have performed in the past. Their show is called Dearly Beloved and they will perform on Friday 6th November at 7.45pm. Tickets cost £10 with £2 off for concessions. Simon and Garfunkle tribute duo Bookends are returning with a moving and powerful live performance and multi-media show. Their first show at the Thame Players sold out and with the rave reviews this latest tribute has received, it is likely to sell out again.

Puss in Boots – the Panto This year’s pantomime from the Thame Players will be very traditional with corny jokes, lots of slapstick, dancers and cross dressing. Already busy rehearsing it promises to be a sell out so get ready to book your tickets when the box Office opens on Monday 26th October. Tickets usually sell out for most performances well before December so don’t delay. Performances run from 4th – 6th and 9th – 13th December. All tickets for Thame Players productions and for visiting shows are available on our website at www.thameplayers.co.uk or from Spear Travels on 01844 217228 Congratulations to Annette Summerskill who was the lucky winner of the Sept/Oct competition.

Following a BBC Radio tour the show was described as a ‘must see’ with Bookends being labelled as the most authentic tribute to the music of Simon and Garfunkel. With ever expanding visuals, the show opens at the start of their career and ends at the much-publicised breakup. Featuring hits such as The Sound of Silence, Mrs Robinson, The Boxer and the unforgettable Bridge Over Troubled Water, the show is indeed a must see for any music lover. They perform at the theatre on Sunday 15th November at 7.45pm. Tickets cost £12.

Competition Time! Find all 15 words in this word puzzle which appear in the article above to win 4 tickets to the Panto on Friday 11th December. Hint - they are all names, nouns or adverbs. Email your answer to: Steph at thameview@live.co.uk. Entries by email by Wednesday 2nd December

Thame High Street

in Top Ten ‘Greatest Places in England’ Competition Thame High Street is one of the Ten Greatest Places in England chosen by judges in a competition being run by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). The competition is designed to celebrate some of our most attractive and inspiring places and the role planners have played in helping to protect or shape them for England’s communities. Members of the public are now being asked to vote for their overall favourite which will be crowned ‘England’s Greatest Place.’ An eminent panel of judges, chaired by RTPI Past President, Professor Peter Fidler, chose their top ten greatest places in England, after members of the public nominated 700 of their favourites in an earlier stage of the England’s Greatest Places competition.

Janet Askew, President of the RTPI said: “All our finalists are clearly much loved and appreciated places, both by local residents and the people who visit them. We wanted to recognise special places like those on the list which are cherished because they have been protected, carefully planned, or have been improved by the planning system. I am looking forward to seeing who the public now vote as England’s Greatest Place.”

Speaking about Thame on behalf of the judges, Professor Fidler said, “Good planning over a long period has protected and enhanced the character of this small market town and its High Street, and Thame now has the benefit of one of the first Neighbourhood Plans in the UK. It is an example of exemplary community support and careful, sensitive planning.” Thame’s Neighbourhood Plan received an award for innovative plan-making from the RTPI in 2014. The RTPI and its members have been working with communities for a century to help create great places for people. The judging panel was asked to choose a winner for each region, and Thame High Street is the winner in the South East. The full list of regional winners is • Letchworth Garden City, East of England • Peak District, East Midlands • Brindley Place, Birmingham, West Midlands • King’s Cross Regeneration, London • Kielder Park, North East • Liverpool Waterfront, North West • Thame High Street, South East • Bath, South West - joint winner • Bristol, South West – joint winner • Saltaire, Yorkshire PAGE 14

A specially commissioned trophy will be presented to each local authority to mark their ‘England’s Greatest Places’ award. Voting is now open so that members of the public can choose their ‘Greatest Place’. The number of votes cast will decide the overall winner. Voting is very easy: Tweet or Instagram your vote for your chosen place to #RTPIgreatplaces or go online to http://www.rtpi.org.uk/egpvoting and vote there. Voting is open until Friday 20th November.

Famous People of the Chilterns: AGATHA CHRISTIE

Agatha Christie, the world-famous author of 66 detective novels and the world’s longest-running play (The Mousetrap), lived for over 40 years in Wallingford. She grew up in Devon and married her first husband, Archibald Christie, in 1914. Agatha worked as a hospital nurse during the First World War and later in a hospital pharmacy, where she learnt much about poisons. After the war she began writing and publishing novels and raising her only child, a daughter called Rosalind. Her first marriage ended in 1928 and her interest in history led her to meet her second husband, the distinguished archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan. The Queen of Crime and her new husband settled into Winterbrook House in Cholsey near Wallingford in 1934, attracted by the dignified beauty of this Oxfordshire Thames-side town. Their home here provided them with great contentment in a busy and eventful life. It was their main residence for the rest of their lives and Agatha did most of her writing in it. It is here that many of her elaborate plots involving Hercules Poirot, Jane Marple, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford and others came into being. She often accompanied her distinguished husband on Middle Eastern excavations which provided material for some of the 80 books and plays which made her the best selling author of all time. Though she generally kept a low profile in Wallingford, she became president of the amateur dramatic group, the Sinodun Players. Appropriately, the 19th century Corn Exchange Theatre, which is the Players’ home, now St Mary’s Church, Cholsey

features as Causton Theatre in ITV’s Midsomer Murders. Wallingford itself has become a magnet Agatha for fans who come Christie from far and wide to 1925 visit the picture postcard Chiltern towns and villages that are a hallmark of the series. Dame Agatha Christie died at Winterbrook House in January 1976. She is buried in an impressive grave in the churchyard of St Mary’s, at nearby Cholsey, under her married name of Mallowan. In 2010 a Blue Plaque was unveiled on Winterbrook House, still a private home. The exterior of Winterbrook House, and Agatha Christie’s grave, can both be seen on a walk from Wallingford following the Dame Agatha Christie Trail – you can download the leaflet at www.wallingford.co.uk. Explore Wallingford’s Midsomer links on www.visitmidsomer.com. This is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £2.99 from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. Thame Remembers To commemorate the centenary of the First World War, a dedicated team of volunteers have been researching the names on all war memorials and memorial boards within Thame parish; identifying the location of their grave or memorial, with the aim that by November 2018, all will have a ‘Thame Remembers’ cross left at their final resting place.

Can you help? The project started with 190 names, and has since grown to 213. Do the names HT Wilson or Driver James Lawrence Castle sound familiar to you? Perhaps you have family photos, letters, service records, or other information on these soldiers? We are searching for further information and final resting places for them and any information would be greatly received.

The enthusiasm of the Thame community has so far been incredible, with 83 crosses and wreaths delivered to date, in 13 different countries, including UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Malta, India, Singapore, Korea, Tanzania and New Zealand. A full list of delivered crosses, scheduled visits, and available visits can be found at www.thameremembers.org.

If you would like to get involved, perhaps by taking a cross on a planned holiday or business trip, or getting involved with the research, or in another way, please contact the team at Thame Museum, or visit www.thameremembers.org ‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.’ Thame Remembers.

CHRISTMAS MARKET FUN the many wonderful places to visit and enjoy all the local traditions of Christmas.

As we fast approach the Christmas season thoughts turn to festivities and presentbuying. What better way to get into the holiday season than visiting one of the many Christmas Markets to be found across Europe. Take a short break to many European cities – Vienna, Salzburg, Bruges, Prague, Lille, Cologne, Brussels, Berlin, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Budapest, Munich, Berlin and Tallin – just a sample of

traditional fayre between 15 November and 4 January. Another favourite is Budapest – their Christmas market takes place in the main shopping street Vaci Utca and Heroes Square and features traditional Hungarian dancing and folk music, carol singing and stalls selling local specialities including hot sausages and warm gluhwein. (open 27 November to 31 December)

At all of these wonderful places you can enjoy the huge expanse of Christmas stalls in market squares selling their wares – whether that be local dining specialities like stollen cake with hot gluhwein, bratwirst, waffles and wine or the fantastic array of local hand-made gifts from local craftsmen.

Many of the Christmas markets are available to visit for a short 2/3 day break – and there are a few that you can take in on a one day visit with flights and transfers included.

In Vienna, the market is open from 15 November until 23 December – famous for it’s amazing Christmas trees elaborately decorated with Christmas lights and trinkets to it’s festive music concerts at Schonbrunn Palace. Munich is a beautiful city which comes to life in the lead up to Christmas with it’s wonderful Christmas market in the Marienplatz from 27 November until 24 December.

If you would like to know more about holidays to any of the Christmas markets why not call our travel experts at Spear Travels – always ready to help.

Copenhagen boasts the wonderful Tivoli gardens with thousands of twinkling lights decorating the trees and ice rinks, stalls laden with Christmas gifts and restaurants offering
