Nicholas Parsons, star of Just A Minute, becomes new patron of Thame Players Thame Players are delighted to announce that Nicholas Parsons OBE has agreed to become a Patron of Thame Players Theatre Company. Nicholas, the well-known presenter on BBC Radio 4’s comedy game show Just A Minute, stage performer and actor extraordinaire, lives near Thame and has appeared twice at the Players Theatre in the last couple of years. In the first show, Nicholas spoke about his life in show business presenting his one-man comedy show, and in the second, he performed a one-man show celebrating the life and work of the nonsense poet, Edward Lear. Nicholas began his career as a serious actor working in repertory theatre and is a strong supporter of theatre and its place in the local community. Nicholas comments: ’ I am very pleased to be the Patron of such an outstanding theatre company as Thame Players, who have been entertaining the local community with shows ranging from serious drama to comedy and pantomime for nearly 70 years. Unless we actively support local theatres like Thame Players by attending their productions we will lose one of the most valuable creative resources we have, with the power to enrich our lives enormously.’ Known as ‘the ultimate comedy host’ because of his chairmanship of Just a Minute for over 45 years, as well as chairing the quiz show Sale of the Century for 14 years, Nicholas continues to be known for his comedy work as a one-man act on the stage, from his cabaret work in the ‘50s as a stand-up comedian at the Windmill Theatre, to his appearances on The Nicholas Parsons Happy Hour at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – this

year will mark his thirteenth successive visit to the Fringe. Thame Players, who run the only dedicated theatre in Thame, are currently involved in a fundraising campaign, Building A Better Theatre, to raise £200,000 for improvements to the theatre. Comments Pat Shepherd, Chairman, ‘The improvements will mean that more people can see a greater variety of productions in more comfort. As part of our campaign, a series of fundraising events are being held, and we were delighted when Nicholas took part as auctioneer in a Grand Dinner and Auction event at The Thatch restaurant in Thame earlier this year, raising £2,600 towards the campaign.’ Pat continues, ‘With Nicholas at our helm as Patron, we feel confident that we shall raise the money we need and safeguard the future of the theatre for future generations.’

Recipe
Mediterranean fish bake This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh flavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but the meaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fillet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices. Serves: 4 Ready in: 50 minutes
Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good quality fruity one) 350g small new potatoes, halved 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 225g small plum tomatoes, halved 4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g) 50g butter, softened Pared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method:
1 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once. PAGE 10
2 Add the peppers and tomatoes to the roasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Make a space in the tin and add the monkfish fillets. Return the roasting tin to the oven for 10 minutes. 3 Dot the butter over the fish fillets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender. 4 Slice each monkfish fillet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges.
TIP
Replace the peppers with sliced courgettes, chunks of celery and baby button mushrooms, if liked.

Thame’s real food festival hots up Biggest line-up yet of local artisan producers, celebrity chefs and fun foodie entertainment.
who hosts the mid-morning show on BBC Radio 2, with comedian Jams Davies making a welcome come-back.
This year’s event not only brings the biggest selection ever of fantastic local artisan food and drink producers to town, it also sees an amazing street food line-up, great live entertainment and a packed programme of demos from local and celebrity chefs. This year for the first time, the whole town centre will be closed off for some serious eating and drinking – there’ll be more than 100 stall holders lining Thame’s bustling streets. Visitors can sip and munch their way through everything from locally brewed ales and award-winning wines to artisan breads, chutneys, terrines and local honey, plus indulgent cakes, cookies and chocolates. Celebrity & local chef food demos Come along to the Apples
& Pears stages for inspiring food talks and demos from some big name chefs. Raymond Blanc, Adam Simmonds from Danesfield House in Marlow, Shaun Dickens from The Boathouse in Henley-on-Thames and tv chef and writer Lotte Duncan are just some of the culinary talent on offer. You can also enjoy a chocolate making spectacle from Thame’s master chocolatier Nigel Rumsey, a fabulous masterclass in Italian cookery from Katie and Giancarlo Caldesi and a fun and interactive wine-tasting session from Frazer Sutherland who runs The Thatch and The James Figg in Thame. Two fantastic local restaurants also join the line-up: Chris Godfrey, head chef of The Charles Napier at Chinnor and Mike North from The Nut Tree at Murcott, on the Waitrose and Aga sponsored demo stages. Compères for the day will be Ken Bruce

The region’s best food & drink “We’re fortunate that we can attract some of the region’s best artisan food and drink producers, as well as top name chefs and food experts, who recognise the event’s a great local platform for local produce and cooking,” says Lotte Duncan, festival patron. “We’re also giving visitors, foodies who come from far and wide, a superb free day out, trying and buying good things to eat and drink, enjoying hands-on workshops and street music and entertainment. It’s a real food event for all – make sure you’re there to be part of it.” The Thame Food Festival takes place from 9am to 6pm on Saturday 28th September in the heart of Thame town centre. More is on www.thamefoodfestival.co.uk. The festival organisers would like to thank the event headline sponsors McCormick and Schwartz, and sponsors Le Manoir Aux Quat’ Saisons, Waitrose, Aga, South Oxfordshire District Council, The Thatch and Belazu.

The Club has flourished and has become one of the most successful in the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Area of NAFAS, to which we are affiliated. This is a club for all flower lovers, our membership ranges from those who purely enjoy watching the skills of our demonstrators to members who compete at area and national level. Everyone is welcome. We meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Church House in the High Street, Long Crendon, HP18 9AL at 2pm, to watch and be entertained for approximately two hours by the very best flower demonstrators. We have a raffle to win the completed flower arrangements and finish the afternoon with tea and home made cakes. The programme also includes a summer outing, demonstrations by Nationally accredited arrangers, a Christmas party and a range of other social events such as Quiz Nights.

Fun for all the family!
Singing is fun! Thame Chamber Choir has been sharing a love of making music with our local community since 1999. In 2010 we launched Thame Children’s Choir (TCC2) offering the same, high- quality singing experience to children aged 8-14 (see www.tcc2.org for information) and recently, it seems that members of TCC are attempting to ensure the future of singing in Thame by producing, er, TCC3? No fewer than 5 babies have been born to members of the choir in 4 years! Other members have children who are with TCC2 or who are singing in the adult choir alongside their parents. TCC’s next presentation is during the Thame Arts & Leisure (TAL) Festival on Sat 19th October featuring music and readings on the theme of ‘The Seven Ages of Man’. Use

As a choral director, she has worked with both junior and adult choirs, performing a variety of music from classical to jazz, folk and pop, and has conducted several recordings for radio and television. Helen passionately believes in the benefits that music and singing can bring to people’s lives and that, most importantly, singing should be Fun! The Rotary Club of Thame The Rotary Club of Thame is a group of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Our Rotary members are enthusiastic, fun-loving and active volunteers who give their time and talents to serve communities both at home and overseas. The Rotary Club of Thame welcomes new members both women and men. The club’s meetings take place at the Spread Eagle Hotel on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm. The club is currently preparing for the Thame Swimathon event at Thame Leisure Centre on Sunday 13 October. This fun and fundraising event brings together the local community, as local groups enter teams to raise funds for local charities. Another major fundraiser is the Thame Art Show which will take place during the weekend of 30 November. This event showcases local professional and amateur art and sculpture. The club members and their families enjoy also various social activities such as playing skittles, treasure hunts, theatre trips and visits to National Trust and similar properties, such as Highgrove. For more information about club activities or to enquire about becoming a member, please visit the Rotary Club of Thame’s website: www.thame.rotaryweb.org Girlguiding Thame District We currently find ourselves in need of adults to help keep the existing Girlguiding Thame groups running. We would be really interested to hear from anyone who would like to be involved in the unit meetings, no experience is necessary just bags of enthusiasm and there’s plenty of training available if you want it. There are also ways to be involved without attending the meetings which are just as important - shopping, accounts, administration, transport, catering, fundraising and preparing materials for activities. It is incredibly rewarding and fun. If you are interested please contact: Mrs Kathryn Shorter, klshorter80@gmail.com www.girlguiding.org.uk If you have any information for our Community pages, please email us at thameview@live.co.uk. We are particularly interested in any local events, clubs and societies in the area. PAGE 37
