Editors Letter Welcome to the April issue of Village View magazine. As you pick up this magazine we hope that we will be seeing the end of winter and welcoming spring, as a write I can see daffodils in the garden just starting to show their faces. Our cover picture is a wonderful watercolour of Ham Farm in spring, painted by Ben Cook, a local artist – we are very grateful to Ben for allowing us to use this picture, why not have a look at Ben’s advert on P 11. As we (hopefully) put the worst of the winter weather behind us we would like to thank our fantastic delivery team who make sure that the magazines go out in all weather and in all seasons – without them we would not be able to share with you all the amazing community events and the extensive range of truly local advertisers. We do pride ourselves on a very successful delivery system, with 4000 magazines put through doors and another 300 dropped off at doctors, libraries, pubs etc. If you see someone out and about delivering Village View please do give them a smile and let them know that you, like us, appreciate their hard work.

REPS No:R0049192 Pilates targets the deep postural muscles, building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into the correct alignment. It helps to reshape your body, which will become longer and leaner and more toned. It will also improve your posture, achieving the perfect balance between strength and flexibility and it is a great way to reduce stress or unwanted tension. Perfect for athletes looking to enhance their performance and it is also ideal for first-time exercisers. Its slow, controlled approach means it gives much longer-term results. It is especially recommended by medical specialists for those with back problems.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue – Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Major, and I’m a 4 year old German Shepherd Cross. Whilst I like it here at the Dog Rescue, I really would like to go to a new home where I can settle down and have a lovely life with a new family. I’m a very affectionate chap who enjoys going for walks and chasing after tennis balls. I would make a great addition to any family as I get on with children of all ages, although I would need to be an only pet, as I’m not too keen on other dogs or cats. If you are interested in offering a dog a loving home please visit the Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm. PAGE 22

On Your Plot

April showers to October fun! Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves. Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well PAGE 32

you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow. Its wonderful to see the first fresh, local, asparagus appear for sale this month and if you’ve a bit of space spare on your plot now’s the time to plant this gourmet crop.

Welfare workers are pleased that in the last 11 months the number of dogs rehomed has risen to an average of 37 a month. A sponsored fund raising dog walk, with a choice of routes, is also being organised from the kennels on Sunday, April 8th. Similar walks in previous years have attracted hundreds of people and their dogs. There will be a choice of two fun walks: five or ten kilometres, leaving the kennels at 11am. Check in for registration is at 10.30. The aim is to raise money for new isolation unit at the kennels to ensure newly arrived dogs can be accommodated and first checked for any infections. Anyone interested in taking part in the walks, with or without a dog, can obtain a sponsorship form from the charity’s website (stokenchurchdogrescue.co.uk) or from the kennels’ reception desk in Oxford Road, Stokenchurch. There will be a prize for the walker who raises the most. It is also possible to take one of the kennels’ dogs on a walk but they have to be booked previously on 01494 482695.
