Editors Letter Welcome to the February issue of Village View. We do hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are looking forward to 2012. As I write this the weather is mild and there are already signs of spring, with bulbs starting to show in the garden and some bird song competing with the alarm clock in the morning. But as we all know there could be ice and snow just around the corner and, after recent years, we should all be well prepared for it. As we move into another new year it is often a time for planning home and garden improvements and we have plenty of advertisers able to help you with these. Although we are not able to use and test all of our advertisers we do operate a strict policy on renewals of adverts. If we receive two or more complaints about any advertiser then we do not invite them to renew their advert at the end of their booking term – I am delighted to say that this has only happened twice during the past six years. We hope that this means we can offer an extensive range of advertisers who are truly local and who offer fantastic customer service.

01494 483534

Alongside our advertisers we also have details of many community events and we try to spread the word about as many of these as possible. If you know of a community organisation or event who would benefit from inclusion why not let us know and we will do our best to include them.

Mary Towerton School Studley Green High Wycombe

Message from Rachel Van Blerk Parent & Fund Raising Team Member: We moved to the area looking for a village school with small class sizes. Mary Towerton has fantastic facilities including a huge playground and sports field in a truly picturesque setting. Both my children love going to school. They enjoy the varied activities and clubs e.g. football, rugby, gymnastics, gardening, dance, cookery.

It’s not just a school it’s a very friendly community with an incredible sense of fellowship

Visits are welcomed, please contact us: Tel 01494 482384 email office@marytowerton.bucks.sch.uk www.marytowerton.ik.org Headteacher Mrs Sarah Leighton

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue – Dog of the Month Molly is a 1 year old German Shepherd/ Collie Cross. She has had a very unsettled time and is looking for a new home that can offer her some consistency. She really needs to live with another dog as this should help her with all of her problems, but this must be a mature, well-behaved dog. She has started to show many natural collie-instincts, wanting to herd and chase, so new keepers would need to be aware of this and to work on a solid recall before letting her off the lead, and keeping her on lead when needed. She can also jump a 4’6 fence so is going to need secure 6’ fencing in the garden. Molly is a fantastic girl with lots of potential and if you have the time to put into her she will be a very rewarding companion. Molly is OK with other dogs, but not cats, and would suit a home where any children are aged 5 and over.

On Your Plot

Now is the time to go undercover The days are getting a little longer, green shoots are starting to appear and we’re all just itching to get out in the garden now. Just one problem - it’s still likely to be blooming cold! Extremes in weather are typical for this month so even if we do have a warmer spell I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to start sowing seeds outdoors. It’s at this time of year that having some undercover growing space is a real boon - not least because it’s so much more of a pleasure working in a protected environment, basking in the glory of those few rays of sun, than it is feeling a gale force wind that seems as it if’s come straight from the arctic! If you don’t have a greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame then why not think about investing in one now? Get it built in February and you can get a head start on many plants for the season to come. Which is best? Consider the space available - if space is limited then a coldframe, may be a good option. Green houses can offer lots of benefits but are generally not a great idea if your garden is also the kids play area and they can be hugely expensive. On the plus side, they are not easy to get rid of so if you’re prepared for a bit of work you may be able to pick up a secondhand one very cheaply providing you are happy to dismantle and move it yourself (try freecycle). We opted for a polytunnel, which was very reasonable in price and gave us several weekends of entertainment building it. Follow the instructions carefully, don’t rush it and you’ll need at least 2 of you when it comes to putting the plastic on. With both greenhouses and polytunnels you need to remember that they can become very hot in the summer and ensure that adequate ventilation is available. So, now that you have this great new space what can you plant in it? Early tomatoes can be started off in pots and if you plant some summer cabbages now you can get them established and benefit from a crop by late spring or early summer. Cucumbers, beetroot, leeks and lettuces can also be sown indoors and if you want to try something a little more exotic why not plant some peppers, aubergines and even a melon? This is also a good month to think about soft fruit . Most fruit bushes, trees and canes need time to get established before you start to get a good yield and it is

PAGE 38

easy to overlook them in favour of crops that give a quicker return. If you don’t have any fruit growing on your plot how about adding just one type of fruit each year? You could plant raspberry canes this month, or incorporate a gooseberry or blackcurrant bush into your border. If you have pot grown strawberries that have spent the winter indoors then place them outside as they will only flower after exposure to cold weather. Plants that have over wintered outside can be brought in now.

AIRPORT SERVICES

Hamlet Historians

- The Studley Arms

The residential redevelopment of the Studley Arms (previously The Harrow) marks the end for this once important staging post on the main road from London to Oxford.

Rebuilding in the 1930s altered its appearance from that of a house to the more familiar mock Tudor style. Around then, Wethereds closed its nearby pub The Five Alls and transferred the licence to The Harrow, transforming it into a full-scale public house. It became the focus of village life with coach outings to the races and other places, and even sported its own Tug o’War Team. During WW2, it was popular for people like radio personalities who would escape there briefly for a weekend.

With its origins lost in the mists of time, major works for the “Beer House, Strudley [sic] Green” in 1842 suggest conversion from a house. Owned by Wethereds of Marlow from the mid-1800s, The Harrow was first mentioned by name in the 1861 census with William Reading the “beer seller”. Around 1900 the licence transferred from the Reading family to the Bennells. The beerhouse hit the headlines in 1921 when, due to drought, there was no water to tackle a fire. The cry went up “Use beer”, the building was saved but 150 pints of beer wasted…such was the fame of the story that it even made The Times!

The name changed to the Studley Arms in 1973 and further renovation occurred in 1986. However, the opening of the M40 in 1967 took away much passing trade and a steady decline set in, culminating in its closure early this century.

The Harrow in the 1920s

New volunteers are always welcome – if interested please telephone and leave a message on 01494 485839. St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Stokenchurch The PCC and congregation of St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Stokenchurch would like to invite you to join us for an Open Day on Saturday 25th February, between 11 am and 3 pm, to discuss our future plans for developing the church building. When the Victorians reordered the church they arranged it to suit a certain way of being church that is quite different from how we now do church in the 21st century. We have given a lot of thought as to how we might do all the things that we need to do in order to be the church, whilst at the same time preserving, and improving, important elements of our architectural history. This, and the need for some significant renovation to some of the existing fittings within the church, has caused us to think again as to how our church should be ordered. We would like to show you our plans, whilst they are still at an early stage. Plans that include reinstating a gallery at the west end of the church; reopening the main west door of the church; adding a vestry into the northwest corner of the north aisle; replacing the pews with flexible modern pew benches; moving the font into the north aisle; installing a kitchen under the tower and extending the existing church room. If you would like to learn more about what we are doing then there is a display at the back of church that will show you a little more about what we are hoping to do. Ideally, why not come to our Open Day on 25th February when you can discuss our plans with us in detail. We look forward to seeing you there.
