Editors Letter Welcome to the September issue of Village View magazine, bursting at the seams with local advertisers and community information - we have had to add some extra pages this month to accommodate several new advertisers (and another fantastic article!). I think this is confirmation that local advertising really works – if you would like to promote your business to 4000+ local homes why not give us a call on 07712816336 or visit our website at www.chilterndirectories.co.uk. Congratulations to Stokenchurch for winning the Bucks Association of Local Council’s Pushman Cup for the Best Kept Village in the ‘Large Village’ category. (www.bucksalc.gov.uk) There was a second accolade for the village when it won the Savills Community Award for showing the most evidence of community effort in achieving best kept village status. The competition awards are for the best kept villages, not the most beautiful. Care, cleanliness, maintenance and community effort are what the judges were looking for when they visited, so this award is a tribute to the effort that everyone in the village put in to win this award. Well done to all concerned from the team at Village View magazine.

Dog of the Month Beetle Hi, my name is Beetle and I’m a two year old Jack Russell Terrier.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695. It would be great to see you!

I’m a bit on the small side, but don’t be fooled – I’m full or character, an energetic little dog who loves human company and interaction. As a result I will need active owners who enjoy long walks. I’m OK with other dogs, possibly cats, and would suit any home with children aged 6 and over. If you are interested in offering me, or any other dog, a loving home please visit PAGE 14

M40CEG in the Fast Lane with noise reduction and renewable energy proposal The “Community Energy Challenge” - launched by The Co-operative in conjunction with the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) - has confirmed M40 CEG as one of seven groups across the UK selected to share £200,000 of support including specialist mentoring, enterprise development and technical advice.

It will improve the quality of life for local communities. It will offset installation costs and benefit the environment. Similar schemes have succeeded in Europe and the group hope that they can work with the Highways Agency to make it a reality in the UK too.

The scheme to mount Photo voltaic cells on sound reducing barriers was applauded at the presentation in Manchester .The proposal stemmed from addressing the question of how to offset the high cost of noise barriers and the group believes that this solution is win, win.

For the full report go to http//www.m40-chilterns.org.uk and follow the link to join our face book campaign to help highlight our cause. offset the high cost of noise barriers.

This potentially is the most exciting news to date to improve the noise pollution along the M40 corridor junction 3 to 8.

Martin Lewis Energy Energy prices are likely on the rise. Don’t take my word for it – British Gas has warned customers the price it pays will go up by 15%, and this could push up folks’ bills by £50 come Christmas. While we may be hitting summer, many can cut £100s off their bills and prevent hikes by acting now. Here are ten things you need to know. 1. Take two minutes to check what you can save – often more than £250 Millions of people are overpaying. A typical home on a standard tariff pays £1,320, the same home on the cheapest pays £1,030. Not checking’s like chucking a wad of tenners on the fire to keep warm.

6. FREE insulation energy efficiency can seriously cut bills. Installing loft and cavity wall insulation can cut £300 a year from bills. Each normally costs around £175, but currently EDF and Tesco Energy are giving and installing it free to anyone with a suitable home, not just their own customers. Other suppliers will even pay you £200 to get insulation if you’re on certain benefits, including pension credit. 7. Got electricity only? If you don’t have gas, don’t think the rules are any different – you can still save. Use the comparisons above.

8. What if you’re on a prepay meter? Over three million UK homes use prepayment meters 2. Compare, switch, get cashback, save £100s that allow you to pay for your gas or electricity on a Your cheapest deal depends on the tariff, region and pay-as-you-go basis. You top up your energy via a key usage. The easy way to find what you can save is or card, which you can credit at newsagents, post plugging your details into a www.consumerfocus. offices and garages or, sometimes, online. See www.moneysavingexpert.com/ MoneySupermarket pays £30 cash and uSwitch a prepayenergy for a list and more help crate of wine – you don’t get these going direct. With price hikes predicted, locking in to a cheap fixed Eon promises it will keep its tariffs where they are tariff insures you against rises. So if a rise would be now until the end of the year (though if others do unaffordable, you should do it. Better still, EDF’s fix hike prices, I suspect it’ll follow suit in early Jan). Wrestling with my beans on the occasional nice day this summer brought to mind the sad story of Hannah Bird who was jailed for the apparently serious crime of stealing beans sticks 140 years ago. Hannah Quartermain was born in 1837 and lived in Beacon’s Bottom or thereabouts all her life. She married William Bird, a higgler (trader in dairy, poultry and small game) in 1855 and they do not appear to have had children. In 1869 she became involved with the law through charging relative Elisha Bird, a local wood turner, at Watlington Court with stealing a box of her clothes. This was a family dispute and was eventually settled out of court. In June 1872 Hannah spent seven days in Aylesbury Gaol for the bean stick theft. It was not a good year for her as just two months later she was back at Watlington charged with stealing a reaping hook worth 2d from Aaron Belson, innkeeper at The Raven (now the Mowchak on the A40). A policeman had found the hook the next day where Hannah was cutting wheat in a field at West Wycombe. This time Hannah endured 21 days’ hard labour in the House of Correction at Oxford Gaol. Alcohol may have provided comfort in her hard life: in 1875 she was found drunk at 1.30am on a road in High Wycombe. According to a policeman “A dog was with her which bit his trousers. She used very bad language.” [Bucks Herald]. She was fined 5s plus 15s costs or a week in prison. Her reply was: “ I’ll have the week, then, sir”. So it was back to Aylesbury Gaol. Husband William, known as “Old Pimmock Head”, also enjoyed a drink and was well-known for giving beer to his donkey when visiting local pubs. In 1874 he had PAGE 46

been charged with being drunk in the Oxford Road and the Bucks Herald reported: “Superintendent Sargent stated that he was very drunk, and used exceedingly bad language.” In December 1877 William was in court at High Wycombe on a charge of drunkenness and disorderly behaviour, rather ironically, at the Bird-in-Hand. “The defendant and his wife were going home with a cart containing holly and being met by a constable, who asked where the holly came from, the defendant became very abusive, created a disturbance, and was locked up for the night.” [Bucks Herald]. The fine was 5s plus costs. One wonders what Hannah did with the cart and holly that evening! Another of Hannah’s minor misdemeanours was damaging a local butcher’s quickset hedge in 1886, for which she was fined 5s. at Watlington. She died ten years later and William a few years after. One can only hope that they had some happiness in their lives.

Book Review Saved by the Bell

September signals the end of the summer holidays and the start of the new academic year. While you’re replenishing supplies of notepads and pens, why not pick up a novel that’s based in a school? Fail to find our book selection highly entertaining and… see me afterwards. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger From the opening paragraph we’re in the mindset of the rebel with a cause, the ‘catcher in the rye’ himself, 16 year old Holden Caulfield. He’s been expelled from prep school and through his biting narration, edgy cynicism and general teenage angst, we’re all reminded what it’s like to be adolescent. With its profanity and sexual content it remains on many banned book lists and thus has become an anthem for youth. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling From the moment Harry, Ron and Hermione board the Hogwart’s Express at platform 9¾ we know that school will never be the same again. Who wouldn’t want to dine in the Great Hall, be tutored in muggle studies and represent your house at Quidditch? Featuring every aspect of boarding school life wizard-style, it’s an absolute must-read. Skippy Dies by Paul Murray Opening with a dramatic doughnut-eating contest in which Skippy does indeed kick the bucket, this is a wildly funny and equally gross insight into the minds of teenage boys. Overweight genius Ruprecht Van Doren and his roommate Daniel ‘Skippy’ Juster attend Seabrook College for Boys in Dublin. Beginning at the end, it then goes back in time to follow Ruprecht in his pursuit of Lori from the neighbouring girls’ school. If you thought teenage boys were obsessed with flatulence and other bodily functions, you’re right. They’re also children struggling to find their identity and for that, the book is incredibly endearing. PAGE 56

THE COUNTRY WORKSHOP

Goodbye, Mr Chips by James Hilton This time it’s the teachers’ turn to have a voice. ‘Goodbye, Mr Chips’ is the sentimental tale of Mr Chipping, a much-loved staff member at a fictional boys’ public boarding school. Failing to connect with the pupils at first he eventually finds his confidence and a new love. Ok, it’s a bit mushy and sentimental but there’s something about these warm recollections of the retired schoolmaster that will melt your heart. Beautifully-written and wonderfully nostalgic it’ll have even the former bad boys remembering school through misty eyes. The Blackboard Jungle by Evan Hunter Set in New York, this is a gritty and realistic portrayal of a new teacher’s struggle to maintain discipline in an inner-city school. It may have been set in the 1950s but the subject matter is timeless, dealing with violence in a way that rings as clear as the school bell within today’s society. It has a brilliant climax that’s worth the wait and will make your old comprehensive feel like something from Enid Blyton. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro On the face of it, Hailsham boarding school in the heart of the English countryside seems idyllic. The students are nurtured, encouraged to stay healthy and are protected from the outside world. The story centres round the love triangle of Kathy, Ruth and Tommy. As a now thirty-one year old, Kathy begins to reflect on their time at Hailsham and what it means to have been a student there. Without wanting to give the plot away, Hailsham has a dark secret and only a special type of person may attend. Ultimately, it’s a story about love, friendship and hope.
