Editors’ Letter Welcome to the March/April issue of Chiltern View (Villages) and a magazine packed full of local advertisers, competitions, articles and more. We have been spoilt for choice in this issue with a multitude of seasonal celebrations and we hope we have managed to cover a few of them. Early in March (6th) we have Mothering Sunday (see article on P32), a time to celebrate Mothers and all they do. On the 25th of March we see the start of Easter weekend (very early this year) and on the 23rd of April, St Georges Day. We are delighted to welcome a new contributor on P36, Ela from Bochic Weddings and Events, who is going to help advise on the need for a wedding or party planner – so if you are just starting to think about an event later this year or next, this may well be of interest. Look out for her articles in future issues. We also have a fantastic competition (P 20) to win 2 tickets to the opening night of ‘Jackie the Musical’ at Wycombe Swan Theatre. For those of you ‘of a certain age’, this should be just up your street so why not have a go and see if you are lucky this month. Our thanks to Wycombe Swan for donating these tickets. Until next time (when perhaps it will have stopped raining)

Your first stop should be a visit to Spear Travels in Thame; their experienced staff love nothing more than arranging that “special trip”. Pop in for a chat and we can start to create your perfect break. The Maldives is the perfect choice for a romantic holiday. Fly direct from London Gatwick airport and land in paradise. Transfer by speedboat to your resort and private water villa, just steps from the crystal clear ocean. Palm trees swaying in the breeze and pure white beaches

provide the perfect backdrop for you to relax and re-charge whilst enjoying World Class cuisine, spa treatments and year round sunshine. If you crave the hustle and bustle of a city then New York is the place for you. The Big Apple, the city that never sleeps - so good they named it twice. Shop until you drop on the famous 5th Avenue, home to well-known stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and Tiffany & Co. Head to the top of the Empire State Building, catch a show on Broadway or take a carriage ride through Central Park. To really treat that special someone, take an early evening cruise and see the sun setting behind the iconic skyline.

something a little closer to home, why not explore the enchantingly beautiful Italian city of Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance and home to Michelangelo’s David? Florence is romantic and magnetic, brimming with art and culture. Spend the day strolling the streets of the historic centre, see the stunning Ponte Vecchio bridge or visit the famous Uffizi Gallery. Enjoy traditional Italian cuisine in the shadows of the Duomo, Florence’s most iconic landmark, or escape the city for a day of wine tasting in the Chianti region. If you would like to know more about these featured destinations, call our travel experts at Spear Travels who can help you find that perfect break?

Plant of the month Tomato Growing tomatoes from seed is super easy and you can get started in early March to ensure a lovely summer crop to look forward to. Simply fill a small pot with compost and scatter seeds thinly over the top then cover with another thin layer and water. Pop the pot on the windowsill to help the seeds to germinate and keep an eye on them. This is a great project to do with kids as you’ll see seedlings within a couple of weeks and within a couple of months they’ll be big enough to move into separate pots. You can move them using a dibber and carefully 12

lower them into their own, individual small pot. Once you see the yellow flowers appear you’re ready to put them into grow bags outside with canes. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk

Wycombe Swan Once there was a time with no mobiles, no online dating and no Facebook. When teenage girls waited by the letterbox for their weekly issue of Jackie Magazine. In Jackie the Musical we revisit those heady days, and tell the story of a recent divorcĂŠe who seeks advice once more from the pages of her old Jackie annuals. The quizzes, the fashion tips and above all the Cathy and Claire problem pages are all eagerly devoured by our plucky heroine as she revisits the dizzy world of the teen bible. With her ex and a handsome new guy in tow, the valuable lessons she learnt as a girl begin to influence her future once again. Starring Janet Dibley (The Two of Us, EastEnders, Fat Friends), Olivier Award nominee Graham Bickley (Ragtime, Bread) and Nicholas Bailey (EastEnders, The Archers), Jackie the Musical is accompanied 20

by a pulsating sound track of classic 70’s hits. Thrill once more to the unmistakable sounds of pop idols Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Marc Bolan and many more. With original choreography by Arlene Phillips, this fun and feisty night out is a must see! Jackie runs from Tuesday 10th May to Saturday 14th May and can be booked online wycombeswan.co.uk or on 01494 512000.

Exclusive Competition For a chance to win two tickets to the opening night of Jackie the Musical on Tuesday 10th May just answer the question below: What was the problem page feature in Jackie magazine called? A: Sue and Sarah B: Cathy and Claire C: Jane and Jenny Email your answers to Steph, along with your name and address to villageview@live.co.uk by Thursday 28th April 2016.

seconds in the Golden Hour.

Goodbye ‘BOB’, hello ‘VAL’! This time last year BOB was whisking medical crews to emergencies across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, then in October 2015 BOB ‘retired’ to the south of France, lucky him! Where BOB once reigned a lady has taken his place, welcome ‘VAL’, or G-TVAL to be accurate, a brand new Airbus H135 T3 helicopter. VAL can do everything BOB brought to emergency support across the region and more, she is… an upgrade! Since becoming operational VAL has been working hard, but from mid-March this year she really comes into her own, VAL can fly at night! BOB could too but landing limitations meant only brightly lit locations were suitable. With special lights and nightvision goggles VAL can pretty much go anywhere and it’s not just this kit that makes her special. Carrying a vast range of lifesaving equipment including stateof-the-art ultrasound devices, blood transfusion kit and a blood analyser VAL helps shave off vital

24 28

Just one element of a successful ‘partnership’ VAL’s crews also need similar capabilities and the doctors, paramedics and aviation partner Bond Air Services heli-med pilots are currently finalising their night response training. Once completed, the newly renamed Thames Valley Air Ambulance (TVAA) will have full night-flying capability allowing them to operate a 19hr day from 7.00am to 2.00am. During winter when we only have around eight hours of daylight VAL is effectively operational for an additional eleven hours! Working closely with South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, TVAA relies wholly on public support. You can help in many

ways, donations, recycling, fundraising and attending events that support the charity. The Abingdon Air and Country Show held annually at ex-RAF Abingdon, Dalton Barracks, OX13 6JQ, just off the A34 is one such event. This year’s show is on Sunday 1st May from 10.00am until 5.30pm. A full afternoon air display is complimented by ground attractions including static aircraft, falconry and other countryside demonstrations, vintage vehicles, steam engines, music, dance, Daleks, children’s amusements, tank rides, craft and trade stalls and much more!

For up-to-date information including ticket prices and sales please visit their website – www.abingdonairandcountry.co.uk To WIN ONE OF THREE FAMILY TICKETS just tell us the name of the new air ambulance. Entries to: Coralie at salesprv@live.co.uk by Friday 22nd April. Please include your full name and address. Katie Whelpdale, Community Fundraising Manager for TVAA, said: “In 2015 we undertook 212 lifesaving emergency missions in Oxfordshire and the support from Abingdon Air and Country Show in raising funds and awareness for us year on year is invaluable. TVAA is completely funded by the local community and it is thanks to their generosity that we are able to develop our service to ensure we are continuously providing the best possible medical expertise to those who need it most, wherever they are.”

Why do We Have Mother’s Day? “Why do we even need Mother’s Day?” My 14-year-old daughter grumped as I suggested she might like to put some consideration into a card and flowers. Well Gracie, let me enlighten you... The full time job - No holiday. No time off for good behaviour. 24 hours, 365 days per year and no pay. If my boss at work tried to impose these conditions as the terms of my contract I’d have grounds to take him to court. The housework - It may surprise you Gracie to know that the house does not clean and tidy itself. Clothing does not wash, iron and sort itself into drawers. There isn’t an army of cleaning fairies who pop out at night to dust and run the vacuum cleaner over the carpet. It is actually your Mum. Ok some of it is me, and you will do the odd chore (generally reluctantly) but mostly, let’s be honest here, it’s mum. The food – Meal-planning, shopping, cooking. It’s just done, sorted, no problems. I realise you and your brother clear the table

and stack the dishwasher, mostly while grumbling about slave labour and the general unfairness of life, but I’m betting you’d miss the meals if they suddenly stopped. The taxi – How often do you use your mum as a fareless taxi-service? What if she made you walk, catch a bus or cycle to your friends’ houses. What if she starting charging you? The organiser – Where are you supposed to be at 9.30am this Saturday? Or 4pm on Tuesday? Bet mum knows! The therapist – That boy you like but who broke your heart? Mum will offer hugs and a shoulder to cry on. That nasty teacher who was making your life a misery? Who spoke to her on your behalf? Which subjects should you take at school? Should you choose hockey practice or clarinet lessons? Mum will advise. You may not like the advice or take it, but you know she cares. The banker - That school trip you forgot to tell us about? The night out at the cinema with friends you simply must attend? The new shoes you absolutely have to buy? Who stumps up for all this stuff? That’s right, your mum. So a card, a handwritten note, a hug, a kiss and a heartfelt ‘Thank you mum’ will go a long way toward making her feel special, and yes it does seem ridiculous we have to have a day set aside for it but that’s the point! In our busy lives for one day we stop, think and appreciate everything she does. So that Gracie darling is why we have Mother’s Day! By Tom Hancock

Did you know the average individual spends 200250 hours planning their wedding?! It can become a full time job and hiring a wedding planner will give you free time to enjoy the journey. During your initial consultation with the planner, they can get a feel for the style of wedding you’d like and determine exactly what you need help with. Their role includes: Sourcing venues and suppliers Managing your budget Negotiating with suppliers Design ideas Sourcing decorations Dressing your venue Wedding project timeline – to keep you up-to-date with all wedding tasks Sending invitations and tracking RSVPs Administrative tasks (‘Wedmin!’) Schedule creation Supplier and venue meetings Managing your day to ensure everything runs to plan! Planners can tailor their services to suit you personally and offer a number of different packages, so if you don’t need a full planning service, you may benefit from their help in another way. Partial planning services include assistance with the final months leading up to the wedding (e.g. sourcing last minute suppliers and putting together a schedule). ‘On the Day 36

Coordination’ involves planning the wedding yourself, but handing over the reins on the day so you don’t have to worry about anything! Think planners are only for high end weddings? Think again! Planners save you money by passing on discounts from suppliers, ensuring you make the most of your budget. They make your lives easier by taking away the stress of wedding planning, leaving you confident and excited for your special day. You want to enjoy planning your marriage, not become overwhelmed by it and hiring a wedding planner allows you to focus on the fun parts, rather than feel pressured by the ever-changing seating plan, chasing suppliers and budgeting! With the experience, knowledge and relationships with talented, reliable suppliers, planners ensure everything runs without a hitch and you have the best day of your lives! A Good Read The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan Growing up in a typical English town this novel made a huge impact on me when I first read it. The colourful characters seem such a world apart from what I was familiar with and yet it is a story about all of our lives and a woman’s relationship with her mother. In 1949 four Chinese immigrant women in San Francisco agree to meet up each week to play mah-jong, calling themselves the Joy Luck Club. Here they discuss the lives they left behind in China and the dreams and hopes they have for their daughters as they embark on their new lives in America. Whilst not strictly speaking short stories, each chapter tells a different aspect of their lives. The first half of the book tells of the lives of the women in the Joy Luck Club. We learn of their lives in China. An-Mei Hsu whose mother left her to become a concubine to a rich merchant and Lindo Jeng who was forced to marry someone she didn’t love. We then learn of their daughters and their new lives growing up in America, in a culture that seems alien to the world their mothers are describing. Here lies the clash of cultures which leads to friction between mother and daughter. The older generation feel as if they are losing their daughters to American culture and the younger generation do not feel as if anything their mothers talk about is relevant to their lives. Sound familiar? You don’t need to be a Chinese immigrant or growing up in America to relate to the universal themes that Tan weaves into her debut novel. It is about learning to understand the people that fill our lives and accepting that they only have our best interests at heart. It is about learning that our parents too are real people, arriving in the present through a series of events that have shaped them and made us who we are too.

Emily Feather and the Enchanted Door by Holly Webb Have you ever felt as if you just don’t fit in? Where even your own family seems different to you? This is how ten-year-old Emily Feather feels. She looks different to her siblings with her dark hair. It is true that everyone looks a bit different (even her older twin sisters aren’t identical) but Emily just can’t shake the feeling that there is something about her that sets her apart from the rest of the family. Her best friend Rachel points out that she is the only one not named after a bird, but surely there is more to it than that? Emily lives in an unusual house. Her dad, Ash, is an author, writing fantasy books. The house seems as if it could have come straight out of one of his books. Her room is in the old attic at the top of a rickety flight of stairs, with ornately carved mirrors on the landing. Sometimes it even feels as if the walls have moved: but that would be silly as Emily knows that can’t happen. One day she is passing one of the mirrors and sees a strange reflection in it. A girl with green skin is staring back at her and that is just the start of a series of events that will completely change Emily’s life. It turns out that she was right. She IS different from the rest of her family, but not in any way she could have possibly imagined. Holly Webb is better known for her novels books about animals and has written over 90 books for children. However this book, the first in a new magical series, shows that she is just as adept at writing about fantasy worlds. Aimed at readers aged 8+ this is a lovely introduction to traditional fairy mythology. It does take a while to get going and the titular enchanted door doesn’t appear until the final quarter of the book. This is clearly intended to introduce the reader to Emily’s world which is then explored in future books. By Willow Coby

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Hugo, I’m a 17 month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Mix. I am a big boy & I don’t really know my own size & strength. I will need further training but I do love treats so we should work well together.

If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

I can be a little worried and reactive around dogs when they come into my space. I will need at least 2 hours of exercise a day so need a fit family. I cannot live with another dog, but may be able to live with a cat and would like any children in my new home to be aged 16 years and over.

Sugar: Not So Sweet and Innocent Recently, evidence of sugar’s evils and a potential sugar tax have dominated the media. The Chief Executive of the NHS has even proposed a 20% NHS ‘sugar tax’ on food in England’s NHS cafes. So why is sugar nutrition’s new super-villain? Storing Sugar as Fat Sugar’s most obvious risks are obesity, which costs the NHS around £6.4bn per year, and tooth decay. What’s less obvious is that when we don’t burn off the sugar we consume our bodies convert it to fat, storing it partly in the liver, which can lead to fatty liver disease, and partly in our fatty tissues. A study of the development of visceral fat - the dangerous, hard-to-shift fat that’s stored around the internal organs - showed that while it increased in all participants, it increased most in people consuming sugar-sweetened drinks on a daily basis. High sugar intake, hand-in-hand with obesity, can also increase our risk of hypertension (high blood pressure), type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gout, osteoarthritis, depression, respiratory problems, sleep apnoea, infertility problems, breast cancer and bowel cancer. Sugary foods can make our blood sugar levels seesaw too, making us irritable and tired when we come ‘down’. However, experts are divided about whether a high sugar diet makes us prone to thrush, although diabetics are at higher risk and there’s anecdotal evidence of low sugar diets helping with recurring thrush. Sugar by any other name... is Still as Sweet Your latest grocery purchase may not say it contains ‘sugar’, but glucose, dextrose, maltose, fructose (found in fruit) and lactose (found in cow’s milk) are all different forms of sugar, as is sucrose (our everyday sugar). Honey, molasses, syrup and fruit juice concentrate are often included in supposedly healthy foods, but they all contain sugars too. Beware. Hear ‘sugary foods’ and you probably think of fizzy 56

or fruit drinks, sweetened coffees, biscuits, cakes and chocolate. But check the ingredients of ketchup, pickle, salad cream, barbecue sauce, bottled cooking sauces or shop-bought soup, curry, pizza, savoury foods and low fat ‘healthy’ options many use large quantities of sugar to improve their taste. how much is too much? Intrinsic sugars (those naturally occurring in milk or whole fruit) aren’t related to adverse health effects. However, free sugars - those added to foods or naturally present in fruit juices, honey and syrup – are, and the World Health Organisation has advised us to reduce intake of free sugars to 10% of our daily calories, and down to 5% for further health benefits. The UK Government has now recommended this 5% limit. 5% of our calorie intake is equivalent to around 25- 30g of sugar (around seven teaspoons). Had a can of standard Coke today, or five Jaffa Cakes? You’ve exceeded your daily sugar allowance. The allowance for children aged 4-6 is 19g a day and for 7-10 year olds, 24g. Yet a standard 200ml Capri Sun contains 20g of sugar. Sugar Swaps and drops • Swap cereals with added sugar or honey for unsweetened cereals with fruit. • Swap sugary desserts for fruit, plain yogurts or homemade milk puddings. • Ensure sweet treats deliver nutrition too choose malt loaf over doughnuts. • Exchange fizzy drinks for sparkling water mixed with a no-added-sugar squash. • Gradually wean yourself off sugar added in hot drinks, cooking and baking. Drastically reducing your sugar intake is tough, so start small and let your body (and taste buds) acclimatise. After 28 years of running West Wycombe Post Office, and following many months of discussion with the Post Office Network Transformation team, I have very reluctantly handed in my resignation.

WONDERFUL GREETINGS CARDS & UNUSUAL GIFTS

There are major changes underway within the organisation due to the decision by the Government to withdraw the current subsidy. Whilst we are devastated at losing this part of our business we feel we have been left with very little choice as the huge drop in our income (over 60%) would jeopardise not only the rest of our business but ultimately our home. This is not a decision we have taken lightly and we want to assure you all that we will continue to offer a full service as long as we can, and certainly until Post Office Ltd has made satisfactory arrangements to relocate the office within the area. We are also committed to keeping the Village Store fully functional, and in fact have several new ideas. Any feedback or suggestions on services or ranges you would like to see would be gratefully received. Mary Marshall and Family

Crossroads Veterinary Centre Myth busters can cause anaemia (a potentially dangerous blood disorder).

With so much information available it can be hard to know what is best for your pets! We hear many ‘urban legends’ and ‘old wives tales’ with regards to pet health care – some of these are genuinely good ideas whereas others are downright dangerous!

“My animal lives indoors so does not need flea treatment” – FALSE Fleas will gladly hitch a ride on your clothing, and then hop off onto your pet to feed. After a blood meal the flea will begin laying hundreds of eggs in your home and an infestation can set up without your pet ever leaving the house.

Below are some useful home tips and some common myths: “Salted water is good for cleaning small wounds/ scrapes” – TRUE.

“My dog is scooting; s/he might have worms” – TRUE

However, if a wound is large or not healing within a few days then it is advisable to attend a veterinary consultation.

However, be aware that scooting can also indicate a problem with the anal glands or an underlying skin condition. If it does not resolve within 24 hours after worming then a veterinary visit is recommended.

“Garlic repels/kill fleas” – FALSE.

The best advice is always to call your local veterinary practice; your vet will be happy to give you guidance that is safe and tailored your beloved pet’s specific needs.

Rubbing garlic powder into your pets coat/feeing your pet garlic has little effect on parasites but
