Editors’ Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View (Villages). This issue has been particularly busy with both advertising, and editorial promoting local events. We have struggled to find enough space but hope that we have managed to squeeze everyone in. We are delighted to be able to help promote local events and we have included several in this issue. The first, on Saturday 11th June , is The Stokenchurch Village Fete and Companion Dog Show (P 56). This is a well-established village event with something for all the family – from an Elvis Tribute act to Donkey rides for the children. We are also pleased to be supporting the Beacon Festival (P 48), an amazing local festival which raises money for good causes and includes comedy, music and camping. There will be a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) plus 2 adult tickets awarded to the lucky person who answers this question ‘Who are the headlining band on the Saturday?’ Answers please to Coralie at salesprv@live.co.uk by Friday 3rd June. You will be pleased to hear that we have slightly changed the crossword to make it less tricky – some of you reported finding it a little challenging! We are also very excited to have a new, regular recipe kindly supplied by What’s Cooking in Thame. Finally, we couldn’t resist our front cover picture and are happy that we can continue to support Hearing Dogs, a fantastic local charity. Until the next time

A Good Read The Winter Ghosts – by Kate Mosse This is an unusually short novel by Kate Mosse at just 250 pages. However readers won’t be disappointed as Mosse once again takes us back to the South of France and the area in the Pyrenees which provided the haunting backdrop to her weightier Labyrinth novels. It is 1933, and an Englishman visits a book antiquarian in France with a strange manuscript written in the now extinct Occitan language of the region. The antiquarian is curious and wants to know how an Englishman would have it in his possession. Slowly, the foreigner tells his story. In 1928, with Europe still recovering from the aftermath of World War 1, Freddie is recovering from an illness. Still struggling to come to terms with the death of his older brother George, his doctor suggests a trip to France where the mountain air in the south may help his recovery. He is consumed by grief and guilt over George’s death and welcomes the opportunity to visit the country where his beloved brother died. A car crash during a storm in the mountains sees him stranded in the oddly deserted-looking village of Nulle. He finds lodgings and the next day is invited to attend the Fete de Sainte-Etienne, a celebration of the village’s past. It is here that he meets Fabrissa, a beautiful mysterious woman. Mosse cleverly allows us to see the psychological effects of grief. As in the Labyrinth trilogy she embeds the story in the medieval history of the Cathars (an ancient sect of Christianity, long since destroyed) in the region. Are there such things as ghosts or do we create them in our mind to deal with the events that appear doomed to reoccur throughout history? Or are ghosts merely the reminder of mistakes that we are condemned to repeat?

Cloudberry Castle: Ballet School Secrets by Janey Louise Jones This is the second book in the Cloudberry Castle series. The first introduced ballet-mad Katie and her family. Following the death of their elderly neighbour the Mackenzie family find themselves the owners of Cloudberry Castle. The crumbling building could be beautiful and the book follows Katie and her family as they raise enough money to turn it into a new ballet boarding school. At the start of this second book the school is about to open. Katie’s mother was a dancer with the New York City Ballet and has spent the last few months planning classes, ordering costumes, and holding auditions, whilst her dad has been hard at work transforming the rooms into ballet studios, classrooms, and dormitories. When September arrives Katie is in heaven. She gets to dance all day and soon makes friends with some of the other girls. Her mum is planning to stage Sleeping Beauty at the end of the year and Katie would love to play Princess Aurora. However, one of the new students, Leo, seems to be about to put a dampener on things. She arrives with a private chauffeur and pony and clearly thinks she is better than everyone else. Katie begins to worry that she is not as good at ballet as she thought she was. Can she win the role of Princess Aurora? Combined with a discovery in the grounds of Cloudberry Castle which may well reveal some long-hidden secrets, this novel is perfect for a young ballet fan. Katie is a very likeable narrator and Jones is an engaging writer. This is aimed at readers aged 8+ and its 141 pages are split into 28 manageable chapters for young readers looking to gain more confidence. By Willow Coby www.chilterndirectories.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership
Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long
standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Stokenchurch & surrounding areas
and manager James Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give James a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Joe, I’m a 4 year old Lurcher Type. I am such a wonderful boy, with a big heart and I’m full of character. If you are looking for an active Lurcher who likes to be on the go and who has bags of energy, then I may just be the boy for you! I am good with other dogs, but care would need to be taken around smaller dogs as I don’t always realise my size. If I was to live with another dog, a dog of a similar size may be advisable. I have no previous training, but I generally walk well on the lead. I’m fine with passing cars, but a little worried by big lorries (though 28
I’m easily distracted by a tasty treat!). I am very food and treat motivated and love hunting around in the grass for my treats. I really will make a wonderful, fun and comical companion to Lurcher loving people. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Do Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

The Dashwood Arms
Can you remember when, on your travels, you happened across a pub that was interesting and a bit quirky, that had a large play area and beautiful garden and was situated in fabulous surroundings, where you could have home cooked food that you don’t have to look for on a plate and you could leave without having to sell the children to pay the bill; a pub that seemed to have something different going on each time you visited. Maybe you have been to a live music event and yearned for some decent food. Here in the beautiful Chilterns is one such pub. At The Dashwood Arms we are fighting hard to keep the traditional country pub alive. We hope you have time to relax in our warm friendly atmosphere whilst we cook your food. You can enjoy the country side from our garden or wander round the pub looking at the Landlords artwork, even purchase from the

Crossroads Veterinary Centre Microchipping make sure the microchip details are changed over into your name, otherwise again you could face a £500 fine.
Is your dog currently microchipped? If not then you are currently breaking the law… All dogs must now be microchipped and registered by the time they are 8 weeks old. There is no maximum age, and no dog is exempt from this requirement. This means when you buy a puppy from a breeder they should already been microchipped - but it is important to check as you could face a £500 fine if not. Your local vet’s practice can check if your puppy is chipped using a small handheld scanner, much like scanning a barcode. Inserting a microchip is very quick; a needle is used to insert the microchip under the skin and there is no need for an anaesthetic.
This microchipping law only applies to dogs, but all vets would highly recommend also microchipping your feline companions as it is one of the easiest ways to keep them safe. If your pet strays or becomes lost, then no matter where they end up they can be reunited with you using the details stored in their microchip. A collar can easily come off, or be removed, but a microchip is a permanent identification. Without a microchip it is extremely difficult to reunite pets with their owners, and every year thousands of lost pets end up in rescue shelters miles from home.
The law also states that all microchips must be kept up to date - so if you buy/adopt an older dog from someone else then you must

Persistent Pain or Chronic Pain We all feel pain from time to time. When someone injures themselves, specific nerves recognise this as pain, which in turn triggers the body’s repair mechanism. As the tissues repair, the pain tends to improve and usually disappears. This type of pain could be argued to be
36
beneficial: if it hurts, you are likely to try and adapt doing whatever it is that has caused the pain, in the future, so you are less likely to injure yourself in that way again. Occasionally the pain continues even after tissue healing has finished. When pain continues after this point, it becomes known as persistent or chronic pain. This type of pain is not beneficial and in the illustration of walking; what happens is that the person will get better at using their compensatory pattern. Walking slowly, differently, shorter steps, rather than truly improving their control of balance, leading to further injury.
Persistent pain is very common and effects over 14 million people in the UK alone. It often does not respond to conventional medical interventions and needs a different kind of approach, but there are many things that you can do to manage your pain yourself with the support of your osteopath, your family and loved-ones. Keeping active, performing exercises and stretches can help, learning to pace your activities as well as treatment, are all very important and can help you to maintain a fulfilling lifestyle. For more information on how to manage your persistent pain, speak to your osteopath.

What’s Cooking in spring? Don’t let anyone tell you that risotto is difficult to cook. The reality in fact, is quite different, risotto is one dish where the results you can achieve at home are often far superior to those achieved in restaurants. (Unless a restaurant warns you that it will take 20 minutes to cook, leave well alone!). The secret is to follow the tried and tested method, without trying to cut corners. It will take you 30 minutes, standing in front of
your stove, but with the radio on and a glass of wine by your side, who can complain? At this time of year, British asparagus is at it’s peak (late April to mid June) and it just so happens that asparagus makes the very finest of risottos. Before you start, wash your asparagus, trim off the woody part of the stem and slice on the diagonal into 5mm slices, leaving the tip whole. Bring your stock to a gentle simmer and you are ready to begin!
Risotto d’Asparagi (Asparagus Risotto)
Serves 2 Ingredients: 50gr butter A small onion, finely chopped 200gr Arborio rice A small glass of white wine 400gr asparagus 1 litre vegetable stock 1 lemon, zest and juice 3 tbs grated parmesan Salt and pepper
Method: 1.
Melt half the butter in a saucepan over a low heat. Add the chopped onion and let it soften. Stir from time to time, you do not want browned onions. Once softened, add the rice
and stir so that the rice is coated in the butter (use a wooden spoon or spatula). Now add the wine and let it reduce to almost nothing. Add a ladleful of hot stock and again let it reduce, stirring all the time until the liquid is absorbed. Now add the asparagus and another ladleful of stock and repeat the process. This is the rhythm of risotto making. Keep adding the

stock a ladle at a time and reducing down, until the rice is “al dente”, i.e. firm to the bite but not “chalky”. Season with salt and pepper, lemon zest & juice. 2.
Add the remainder of the butter and the parmesan and stir through. Leave it to rest for a couple of minutes. Ideally, serve in a wide rimmed soup plate with more parmesan offered separately.

Climbers For Shade
Most plants need, if not full sun, then most of the day in a bright situation to really thrive but some don’t! Nearly all of us will have a shady spot in our garden, where despite our best efforts, nothing seems to succeed. Before you go ahead with your planting, make sure your area is ready. Dig in compost and fertiliser (pelleted chicken manure or fish, blood & bone are ideal slow release organic feeds ). If you are looking to brighten up a shady wall or fence there are a number of options that will do the job. The ‘Ornamental Quince’ or Chaenomeles bursts into colour in early Spring and then rewards you with decorative fruits in the Autumn. A great choice is Garrya Elliptica, a tough evergreen shrub that produces long catkins during the Winter months. The Garrya is a big plant that can reach over 5 metres, so do bare this in mind. Another evergreen wall shrub that will give you Winter interest is the Pyracantha. White flowers in Summer, but it is the red, orange or yellow berries from November to March that are the attraction.
If you are looking for a climber to cling to your wall or fence, do take a look at the Hydrangea Petiolaris. Again, this is a big plant - it will reach 15 metres in time. The climbing Hydrangea gives you a mass of white ‘Lace Cap’ flowers. Parthenocissus or ‘Virginia Creeper’ will set off and cover a huge area 20 metres plus and it is the Autumn when it all happens. The foliage turns into a riot of rea and orange hues, really beautiful in September sunshine. The Clematis Montana family is a winner in the shade too. A fantastic display of pink flowers early in the season, and then a vigorous bronze tinted foliage that left to its own devices with easily cover fence panels, sheds or evens trees in just a couple of seasons. A good standby for a situation like this is Hedera - the good old Ivy. Not perhaps the most exciting of plants, but Hedera will produce yellow and gold foilage and is as tough as old boots. A good, reliable selection.

If it’s lower, groundcover plants that are required in your shady area, the Euonymous, Cotoneaster and Berberis varieties are very good bets. Low maintenance, interesting colours and textures throughout the year, these plants can be easily pruned back if they get too tall. An excellent choice are Hostas. There is a huge diverse number to choose from, but do remember that they will completely disappear in the Winter once the frosts have hit their foliage. But fear not, they will pop up again the following March. If you need any more information or assistance do pop in. Happy gardening, see you soon, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries. 53
