Editors’ Letter Welcome to our very seasonal November/December issue of Chiltern View (Villages). We do hope this issue includes something for everyone for both autumn and Christmas (yes it is just around the corner!). We have been extremely busy here for the last few weeks and are delighted to say that this looks like it will be a record issue across all 3 magazines. We have had a huge number of new advertisers and a lot of new artwork for our existing customers, many of whom are promoting Christmas and New Year events. We also have many advertisers offering gifts for Christmas and also great venues to hold your festive party. We have been hugely honoured this Autumn to have been nominated and then shortlisted for ‘Best Magazine Design ’at the annual Independent Publishers Conference. We know that many of you love the way our magazines look, because you tell us so, but it was amazing to receive recognition from a professional body. From all of us here at Chiltern View magazines, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Until the next time

Wildlife Trust protects ‘Jewels of the Chilterns’
Autumn is one of the best times of the year to appreciate the glorious ‘Jewels’ of the Chilterns, the woodlands and valleys that make our countryside so special. The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) already looks after several of these precious sites including Chinnor Hill, Oakley Hill and Windsor Hill. From November the Wildlife Trust hopes to add Yoesden, a woodland and chalk grassland site near Radnage, to its Chilterns reserves. In September BBOWT launched an appeal to buy and save Yoesden. The site is renowned for its variety of wild flowers, butterflies and moths on a chalk grassland bank. Above this the ‘hanger’ woodland of beech, yew and whitebeam trees clothes the steep hillside that overlooks Radnage Valley. Estelle Bailey, chief executive of BBOWT, led the appeal. “Yoesden is a wonderful jewel in
the Chilterns. When I visited the site in the summer I was delighted to see so many varieties of butterflies fluttering up from the pink and purple flowers of wild thyme and marjoram. “The sounds of crickets and grasshoppers and the scent of wild herbs were amazing, and the views from the top of the bank looking across Radnage Valley are stunning. BBOWT has the opportunity now to protect this precious site for everyone to enjoy, and to look after it so that more wildlife can thrive here.” There will be guided walks, workshops and events, work parties to help control the scrub, and detailed surveying of the grassland to ensure it is kept in the best condition for flowers and herbs that provide essential food and shelter for butterflies and other insects. The distinctive character of chalk grassland in the Chilterns is of national importance. 80 percent of the UK’s chalk grassland has been destroyed since the 1950s, which means the beautiful swathe of grassland at Yoesden is a valuable site to treasure. Butterfly enthusiasts, who visit regularly in the spring and summer to photograph the 200 species of butterflies and moths there, regard Yoesden as one of the gems of the Thames Valley.

a bridleway through Yoesden, which make attractive circular walks between Radnage and Bledlow Ridge. When the site came onto the market 20 years ago a local family in Radnage literally bought the view because they loved it so much, and valued it as a special place to enjoy wildlife and walk with friends. With advice from John Morris of the Chiltern Woodlands Project and a few grants, they have ensured Yoesden is well cared for. Volunteer work parties have kept paths open, gates maintained, trees planted and scrub cleared to open up viewpoints. If the Yoesden Bank Appeal is successful the Wildlife Trust intends to continue this careful maintenance. Go to www.bbowt.org. uk/yoesden to see photos and videos of this beautiful site, and click on the Adonis blue butterfly to give to the Yoesden Bank Appeal.

Plant of the Month – Camellia Camellias are evergreen shrubs with beautifully large flowers up to 12cm in diameter varying from white to red to pink. These plants grow quickly so they’re great for space-fillers or for gardens that need to mature at speed. Most Camellias will grow to between 8 and 20ft tall if you leave them. They are also super for splashing colour across your garden during Winter when everything else is dying back.
mulch the top of the root surface but don’t pack too much soil on top of the roots as they need a good oxygen supply.
Most Camellias prefer a shadier location with good drainage, but not too much water. Plant carefully PAGE 16

Famous People of the Chilterns: Nancy Astor Nancy Astor is famous for being Britain’s first woman MP, gaining a seat in Parliament in 1919, only one year after women first got the vote. She was American and had married into the very wealthy Astor family, meeting her husband, Waldorf Astor, in 1905 on a liner bound for England. As a wedding gift Waldorf’s father gave him Cliveden, the magnificent estate overlooking the Thames near Marlow, and here the couple settled and began to develop a lavish social life. In their sumptuous Italianate mansion, the Astors set out to woo the aristocracy in extravagant style. With Nancy’s quick wit and new breed of American self confidence, Cliveden became a glittering hub of political, literary and social life, welcoming guests ranging from Gandhi to the pioneering pilot Amy Johnson. Nancy’s own political career began in 1919. When her husband became Viscount Astor on his father’s death and had to give up his place in the House of Commons to take up his father’s place in the House of Lords, she fought and won his seat as Conservative MP for Plymouth Sutton. ‘Vote for Lady Astor and your children will weigh more’ ran her campaign slogan. In Parliament she worked for the rights of women and children and campaigned for temperance, famously quipping “One reason why I don’t drink is because I wish to know when I am having a good time”. She also worked to get women into the Civil Service, the police force and the House of Lords. Nancy Astor was well-known for her witty though sometimes cutting remarks. A couple that have been attributed to her include “I married beneath me. All women do” and “The only thing I like PAGE 20
about rich people is their money.” Nancy left Cliveden on her husband’s death in 1952, but in 1963 Cliveden was again in the news as the backdrop to the scandalous Profumo Affair. The splendid estate at Cliveden with its formal gardens, woodland and Thames riverbank is now opened to the public by the National Trust. You can walk around the gardens and woodland and enjoy some lovely views across the Thames Valley and the Chilterns. The house itself is a hotel: short tours are available on Thursdays and Sundays between April and October (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cliveden). This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Autumn Awareness for Pets
With the weather getting colder you might think that your pet is safe from fleas, but unfortunately the central heating that keeps us warm also keeps the fleas thriving. Adult fleas live in the coat of your dog or cat – their bites can cause itching, allergic reactions, anaemia and can also transmit tapeworms. However the adult fleas only account for 5% of the flea population; the other 95% resides in the environment (in your carpets, wooden floors, furniture or garden) as flea eggs, larvae and pupae. This means that as well as treating your pet it is important to use a product that also controls the environmental parasite burden. The wildlife in your garden such as hedgehogs, rabbits and foxes
CROSSROADS
can also carry fleas so your garden can be full of flea eggs just waiting to hatch onto your pet. There are several Spot On flea treatments that can be bought from your vets that sterilise the fleas as well as killing them, meaning that all stages of the flea life cycle are taken care of. Regular vacuuming and washing pets bedding at 60°C helps reduce the number of eggs, pupae and larvae in the environment. There are also household spray products that can help if you have an infestation. Speak to your vets for advice to control fleas this winter. Remember, fleas can be passed between cats and dogs so it is important to treat all animals in the house.

Lucy’s Recipe Corner Shortbreads A super yummy snack, best served in front of a warm fire with a hot chocolate. Preheat the oven to 180°c or gas mark 4. Rub the butter, caster sugar and flour all together in a large bowl between your fingers until it looks like breadcrumbs. Add the milk to the mixture and knead it to turn it into a ball of dough. Let it cool in the fridge for half an hour. Sprinkle a bit of flour on your worktop and roll out the dough until it’s about 1cm thick. Use some PAGE 24

Look forward to a comfortable, warm and secure winter Autumn is a lovely season; there's something magical about the crisp, clear days, the first smell of woodsmoke, and leaves beginning to turn golden brown. But it is also a reminder that winter is approaching, and so it is also the time when many people begin to research care options for themselves or an elderly loved-one. So for anyone concerned about their own wellbeing or that of a family member or friend, we invite you to get in touch with us at this time. Our award-winning homes are a refreshing alternative to what many people think of when considering a care home: lovely surroundings, excellent menu, and a programme of activity, entertainment and hobbies that is acknowledged as industry-leading. But most importantly, we believe our care is second to none. Don’t wait for the nights to draw in and the cold to take hold. Call us today and give yourself the time you need to plan for a pleasant winter, whatever the weather brings.

What can your medical centre do for you? What would you do if? Someone started choking whilst you were at the restaurant, café, cinema…….. Would you leave it to someone else? - Surely it’s the responsibility of these establishments to have trained staff on site – Isn’t it? Surely there would be someone else trained in first aid in the restaurant, café, cinema – Why look to me to help? Forget the restaurant, café, cinema, how about if this happened in your home, or at a friend’s or relatives’ house? - Makes you think doesn’t it. Did you know that last year in the UK that 900 people choked to death, 2500 people were treated for asphyxiation caused by a blockage to their airways, and 29,000 died from cardiac arrest? Overall it is estimated that 150,000 people a year could be given the chance to live if more people had some skills in Basic First Aid. Stokenchurch Medical Centre are offering subsidised courses in Basic Life Saving and Resuscitation, which will be run by a qualified trainer and paramedic for adults and children over 15 years on Saturday 29 November, 9.00am – 12 noon, and on Wednesday 10 December, 6.00pm – 9.00pm. The subsidised cost will be £15.00 (£5 deposit), and numbers will be restricted to 12 on each course. If successful we will look to run other regular sessions. Each course is accredited, and you will receive a certificate on successful completion. More details and signing on forms at the medical centre. PAGE 36
An active life We all know that becoming more active can help in our remaining fit and well, but what is the medical centre doing to assist; The Centre will be open on Saturdays 25 October and 8 November, 9.00am – 12 noon (see Medical Centre in Community Section), where there will be a ‘drop-in’ session for anyone to attend. There will be a number of stands with different sports practitioners ready to encourage anyone to take up a new physical activity. There will be stands offering Nordic Walking at the centre for different levels of abilities to encourage wellbeing, flexibility and weight loss for all ages. Also Sit, Keep Fit and Flex courses for the older person to maintain strength and prevent falls, and Get up and Go courses for those not used to any physical activity. Also an advisor on Kick Starting Weight Loss. Refreshments available. An article from Stokenchurch Medical Centre. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk

Soak Yourself
Walking towards the boutique, I could smell the amazing aromas, somehow escaping through the doors, and travelling down the street to meet me. The place I am visiting is the ‘SOAK Yourself Bath & Body Boutique’, located on the High Street in Lane End, which opened in August. As I entered through the front door, I let out a gasp of delight at the loveliness of the space. Designed with an up-cycled feel in mind, the shop is an oasis of calm.
Q: Why Lane End? There’s not much footfall in the High Street. A: Our flagship products (the Bath Ritual Recipe Kits) have been on the market for two years, selling online and into other retailers such as Fortnum & Mason. The time came to expand, and the premises in Lane End were perfect with two large rooms in the back, which have become the manufacturing and production spaces. Originally, I was going to use the shop front as desk space, but decided to open the showroom instead. Also, Lane End has a very large catchment area, and being able to visit the boutique to buy a gift negates having to travel to Marlow or High Wycombe.
all in one place. We have a mix and match service where you can personally choose little treats and have them beautifully packaged. All of our products are made with natural ingredients, organic as far as possible, 100% essential oils, they are made by hand, and are luxuriously packaged. Our goal is to help people to relax more, and we encourage everyone to try to take small steps towards going chemical free when it comes to body care. Q: Do you have any celebrity clients? A: Yes, one in particular we are very delighted to have as a customer, and I would love to tell you who she is, but then we might lose her custom as she is a very private person. We also provide bespoke gift selections to a prominent London restaurant owner, a Lord, and a few other wellknown faces. Q: What is the most exciting destination one could go to and see your products? A: Wow, that’s a tough one. It would probably have to be the Four Seasons Resort in Mauritius. I highly recommend a visit. The range of soaps and bath kits speak for themselves. You can find the boutique at 21 High Street, Lane End, HP14 3JF, Tel 01494415710 www.soakyourself.co.uk
Q: What is so special about your products: A: They work, and they are suitable for everyone, from mums to sons. You can do your gift buying PAGE 40

It’s all Childs Play Stocking Fillers When it comes to Christmas it’s often the presents which get the lion’s share of attention but I wonder how many children could name a present from the previous year, let alone years gone by? With money scarce in most families it’s good to remind ourselves that children don’t need excesses of toys but a well chosen gift picked with the child in mind and given with love. In my family it’s the stocking presents which tend to create lasting memories. I still recall the delight in discovering whole walnuts and a Satsuma in my Christmas stocking. Some years ago I was reminded of this by the look of wonder on my three year old son’s face as he reached in his stocking and bought out a juicy fruit. Turning to me as he did so, with sparkly eyes and wide grin he exclaimed ‘How does Father Christmas know how much I like tangerines?’ Moments like these are priceless. In my experience good stocking fillers take weeks, if not months of preparation and collecting to find the right ‘treasures’ which will delight and amaze. For me the Christmas stocking personifies much of the spirit of Christmas as a time of thoughtfulness and giving. Something handmade or collected slowly and steadily over the course of the year often requires far greater time investment than the latest must-have present ordered online, and perhaps this is why it can say so much about the child and giver. In fact each year I find myself wishing that us adults had put a cap on present spending or opted for Christmas stockings instead. Last year, faced with the prospect of my gorgeous mum enjoying her last Christmas with us, I decided to create a magical day complete with old fashioned games and a stocking. In the weeks leading up to Christmas my children and I made and collected PAGE 42
stocking fillers, from bird food balls, (for her to watch the birds from the window), to favourite sweets; emery boards to peppermint foot soak; a heart shaped stone and pretty scent-filled sachets to scent the room. Watching her open each carefully thought out present was magical. Not only did it spread her present opening over an hour or more but we all enjoyed watching her reaction as she savoured every moment. Looking back nearly a year on, the moment still feels as special as it was then and my thoughts turn once more to creating memories for my children. With model Spitfire aeroplanes my seven year old’s latest obsession and a music-mad big sister, I’ve got my eyes peeled for potential stocking fillers costing pennies rather than pounds. Any ideas? Sue Gascoyne (BA, MA, MRTPI), has designed and run workshops to help practitioners introduce learning through play. She has written papers on embedding sensory play experiences in the learning environment and is MD of Play to Z Ltd which provides the Playscope range of quality playful learning resources; award-winning training; and research. sue@playtoz.co.uk www.playtoz.co.uk

Recipe Ginger Christmas Puddings These fruity mini puds flavoured with stem ginger are much lighter than a traditional rich Christmas pudding and don’t need to be made weeks in advance. Makes 6 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes 175g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 175g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder 175g light muscovado sugar 1 tsp each ground mixed spice and ground ginger 3 large eggs 100g dried mixed fruit 50g glace cherries, chopped 50g stem ginger, finely chopped 4 tbsp stem ginger syrup Softly whipped cream or brandy butter, to serve 1 Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas Mark 5. Butter six small pudding basins (each about 200ml capacity) and line the bases with circles of baking parchment. 2 Place the butter, flour, baking powder, sugar, spices and eggs in a large mixing bowl and beat together with an electric mixer for 1-2 minutes until pale and creamy. Fold in the dried mixed fruit and two-thirds of the cherries and stem ginger. 3 Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared pudding basins then cover each basin with a circle of greased and pleated baking parchment and secure PAGE 52
with string. Cover each basin with pleated foil. 4 Stand the basins in a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the basins. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until risen, firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into a pudding comes out clean. 5 Leave the puddings to stand for 10 minutes then turn out onto serving plates. Mix the remaining cherries and ginger with the stem ginger syrup and spoon over the puddings. Serve with cream or brandy butter. Tip For a boozy flavour, gently heat the stem ginger syrup with 1-2 tbsp of rum or brandy then pour over the hot puds just before serving. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Book Review War and Peace In November we remember Armistice Day and it’s always a moving and contemplative time of the year. It’s particularly poignant now we’ve reached 2014, as we mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1 and remember those who gave their lives fighting in the trenches, and for the lost generation who never returned. Whether they’re based on fact or purely fiction, the stories and novels of WW1 still resonate today. Here are some of the most unforgettable. Line of Fire: Diary of an Unknown Soldier Barroux (Author), Sarah Ardizzone (Translator) This remarkable and unusual book came from the chance discovery of a diary. French writer and illustrator Barroux found the journal of an unknown soldier in a rubbish heap on a Parisian street. Barroux’s simple and often stark pencil illustrations have brought the words of the soldier to life and given us a rare glimpse into the first two months of WW1.The diary begins just as France officially declares war, and the soldier’s often heartrending descriptions cover a broad spectrum of emotions: from the physical ache and rub of boots in the here and now, to the hope and longing for his family and for a safe passage through the conflict. What became of the soldier we will perhaps never know, but here we have a rare glimpse into a moment and a life, in time. A Farewell to Arms Ernest Hemingway Based on his own experiences of the First World War, volunteering for the ambulance service in Italy, A Farewell to Arms is a love story between Frederic Henry (a Lieutenant serving in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army) and a nurse called Catherine Barkley. Set against a brutal and bloody backdrop, the novel is full of moments of sheer romanticism and passion. Hemingway’s descriptions of war are truly unforgettable and the themes of love and death make for a very dramatic read. PAGE 56
All Quiet on the Western Front Erich Maria Remarque A group of young, idealistic and gung-ho teenagers are excited and fired-up by their teacher, eager to enlist to fight in the war. What follows is the horrific realisation of what conflict really is, and the terrors of life in the trenches are soon revealed. Paul Baumer was one of those students for whom the war was at first an adventure. The young group of classmates fall apart after the first bombardment, leaving the survivors languishing in a hell of their own choosing. Paul vows to keep on living and to fight against a war that pits young men against others of the same generation. War Horse Michael Morpurgo. From the pen of acclaimed children’s author, Michael Morpurgo, comes a story that has captivated kids and adults alike. Joey is a beautiful young foal who is sold to the army and quickly finds himself charging into battle as the war rages in France. Told through Joey’s eyes, this is a powerful story about friendship, humility and humanity. Joey battles to stay alive and never lets go of his dream of returning home to his original owner, Albert and the farm life he left behind. This powerful story has become both an emotive stage show in the West End and a Hollywood blockbuster. Regeneration Pat Barker Pat Barker’s novel was inspired by her grandfather’s own experiences during World War 1 and a lot of the characters are based on the accounts of individuals who were treated for ‘shell-shock’ and posttraumatic stress disorder (although it wasn’t recognised as such at the time) at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh. The title refers to the research carried out by psychologist W.H.R. Rivers into nerve regeneration after mental and emotional trauma, and explores the medical practices and treatments of the time. The story centres on an English officer who is sent to a military hospital after refusing to continue to fight in the war. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Finance How to Organise Your Christmas Spending Nobody wants the worry of huge credit card debts in the New Year, so why put yourself through that stress when you can be organised in advance? With a little forethought and planning it’s possible to get to the New Year with finances intact, without compromising on the celebrations. These ideas will make your money go further, help to keep your spending in check and let you stay firmly in the black. Saving money in Christmas Clubs Christmas Clubs are still popular despite the problems experienced by Farepak Hampers in 2006 when savers lost their money. They are basically savings schemes that help you spread the cost of Christmas, with members making small monthly deposits that cannot be withdrawn until November or December. Savings may be exchanged for vouchers to be spent in certain stores, or sometimes a catalogue is sent out from which you choose your gifts. Christmas Clubs are a good place to put money aside if you’re finding it difficult to open a bank or building society account, or you might be tempted to splurge it all on a holiday. Some people might find them too restrictive when it comes to buying presents though, and prefer to accrue interest on their savings, however paltry the amount. The level of protection for your money depends on the individual scheme. The Christmas Prepayment Association was set up to help regulate this industry, so it would be worthwhile checking the membership status of your chosen club. If you can put money away into a separate bank account or track your Christmas ‘fund’ within an existing savings account, that would be a better idea. You have the freedom to shop where you like, and withdraw some of the money if you spot the perfect present before December. Is it worth trying a cash back site? Cash back sites like Quidco and Top Cashback offer a percentage cash back on every purchase made. PAGE 60
A directory of participating online retailers is listed on these sites, which pay a referral fee to the cash back site for directing shoppers their way. A percentage of this fee becomes the cash back you receive. Both Quidco and Top Cashback offer two tiers of membership. The basic account is free of charge, with the ‘premium’ account offering additional services for a £5.00 annual fee. A range of payout methods is available, including having your money paid into a bank account, PayPal account, or choosing an Amazon Gift Card. It’s a good idea to move your money as soon as possible as it won’t be protected should the cash back company go into administration. Also consider telling family and friends what you are doing, as the sites sometimes offer a referral fee for new sign-ups. Quidco currently offer a £2.50 bonus for each referral who earns £5.00 cash back themselves. A good time to use credit Purchases of £100 to £30,000 are automatically protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. This means that if the trader goes out of business, or the product is faulty and you can’t get your money back from the seller, your credit card company provides a full refund. For larger Christmas purchases, it’s a good idea to use a credit card for this reason alone as long as the outstanding balance is repaid as soon as possible. It offers a valuable level of protection that isn’t available with a debit card. Some credit card companies also offer purchase protection, so that if an item is lost or stolen they will refund you in full within a certain period of time - often 90 days. It’s worthwhile keeping your receipts and credit card statements for at least this length of time in case of any problems.
