Editors’ Letter Welcome to the 10th Anniversary Issue of Chiltern View (Villages). Amazingly it is 10 years since the launch of our original magazine (Stokenchurch Directory – now Chiltern View Villages) and we have always been so grateful for the support of local businesses and the community. We would like to give a very special mention to those advertisers who have been with us right from the very start and have continued to promote their businesses with us throughout the 10 years. Salon on the Green (P48), a fantastic local hairdresser based in the heart of Stokenchurch; Stokenchurch Service Centre (P41) , a garage serving local people and employing local staff; West Wycombe Village Store (P45), a wonderful card and gift shop with something for everyone, plus a Post Office and deli counter; MG Garden Design (P36), a local garden designer. Our thanks also to The Kings Hotel who gave us the very first front cover and inside centre spread, giving our business a great start and The Print Shop (P43) who printed the first issues and have always given us invaluable support and advice. Thanks also to all of our advertisers and readers for their ongoing enthusiasm about all things local. Chiltern View ( Villages) has gradually expanded and extended its reach, giving our advertisers even better value for money and we have also launched two additional magazines, in the Princes Risborough area and the Thame area. If you are looking for good value, local promotion for your business in 2016 then why not give us a call (07712 816336 or send an email to salesvv@live.co.uk) and we will do our best to help your business grow. Wishing all our readers and advertisers a very happy and healthy 2016.

Sticking to New Year’s Resolutions Did you know that people have been making (and breaking) New Year’s Resolutions for more than 4,000 years? Some historians believe that the practice dates back to the Babylonians. Their New Year began in springtime, with a festival dedicated to the rebirth of the sun god, Marduk. The Babylonians believed that making promises to the gods would help them start their New Year off on a positive note. The Romans kept the tradition up, although they changed the date of the New Year to January 1st. These days, New Year’s Resolutions tend to focus on self-improvement, whether it’s eating healthier, quitting smoking, or getting a new job. Millions of us make a resolution each year, but only 1 in 10 people stick to it. If your resolve is already wavering, here are a few tips to help you stay strong: Write it down. Writing down a goal and reviewing it regularly improves your chances of success by up to 95%! Involve other people. Tell people what your aim is, and ask them to help. Will your partner join you on your healthy eating mission? Do you know someone who fancies going jogging with you? Have a plan - A goal isn’t enough; you need to know how you’re going to get there. Resolving to exercise more? How many times a week are you going to work out? What combination of exercise are you planning to do? Do you need to get anything in place to help you achieve your goal, such as a new tyre for your bike? Break your goal into smaller ones - So you want to lose two stone by your summer PAGE 8

holiday. How many pounds do you want to lose this fortnight? Remind yourself why you’re doing it - Do you want to make more money so that you can buy a house? Do you want to be healthier so that you can watch your kids grow up? Make it pleasurable - There are usually more ways than one to reach a goal. You don’t have to join a gym to get fit, for example; you could take up a dance class, or try karate. Keep track of your progress - Create a spreadsheet, download an app, or just celebrate each small success on Facebook. Give yourself rewards along the way - Save the money you’d normally spend on cigarettes or chocolate and treat yourself with it at each small milestone. Get back on the wagon - We’re only human, so we all slip up sometimes. One fry-up doesn’t mean you also have to skip the gym. Think about why you slipped and consider how you can stop it happening again. Good luck! By Kate Duggan To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Crossroads Veterinary Centre Fleas love our winter heating! As we move through the winter months turning our central heating up we might forget that fleas love it too. They thrive indoors where the temperature is kept nice and warm – ideal breeding conditions! Adult fleas live on the coat of your cat or dog – their bites can cause itching, allergic reactions, anaemia and can also transmit tapeworms! A flea infested pet spreads eggs anywhere it goes. An adult flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day which can fall off onto the carpet, floors and furniture. Eggs can lay dormant for months but with the heating turned up they hatch - the flea cycle begins again! This is why it is important to have protection against parasites for your pets throughout the year. Using our veterinary approved quality products is the best treatment for your pet because they will kill the fleas (and other harmful parasites) before

CROSSROADS

they lay their eggs, taking care of all stages of the life cycle, as well as controlling the environmental parasite burden. Please remember it is not just dogs and cats that need parasite treatment. Rabbits are frequently affected by mites causing severe discomfort. Parasites affect all animals and transfer from one type of animal to another. Knowing the facts about fleas and how to treat them is important. Our knowledgeable staff can advise you on what treatment is best for your pet. Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Marley, I’m a 5 year old Border Collie type. I am deaf and my vision is not 100% but that doesn’t stop me being an affectionate boy – I love to have a fuss & a cuddle. I can be a little anxious in new environments but once I have settled I cope really well. I will need owners who can be patient & understanding. I can live with another dog (this would actually help me adjust & settle in, possibly a cat and would like any children in my new home to be aged 14 years and over.

Red Lentil and Caramelised Onion Soup

Warming, nutritious and surprisingly filling, this soup is the perfect meal to come home to after a brisk winter’s walk.

High fibre lentils promote heart health, lower cholesterol, provide vegetable protein, stabilise blood sugar, and are rich in iron and B vitamins. We love combining these earthy gems with the deep, roasty, slightly sweet flavour of caramelised onion. This soup will gently warm your stomach and keep you satisfied. It’s an American recipe so uses cup measurements. An American measuring cup is one which holds 240ml liquid, so any cup in your cupboard which is about that volume will do! Serves: 4-6 Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 shallots, diced 4 cloves of garlic, chopped 3 carrots, diced ½ teaspoon turmeric powder ½ teaspoon cinnamon 2 beetroot (yellow ideally), peeled and diced 6 cups vegetable broth/stock 1¼ cups of red lentils 1 teaspoon of sea salt, plus more to taste ¼ teaspoon of pepper, plus more to taste 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced 10 cardamom pods or 1½ teaspoons ground cardamom ½ teaspoon coriander powder Method Heat a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. When it dances, add the shallots, garlic, carrots, turmeric and cinnamon. Cook until the shallots soften and the mixture becomes aromatic, about 3-5 minutes. Add the beetroot and vegetable broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Add the lentils and reduce the heat to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper and continue cooking at a simmer for 15-25 minutes, PAGE 16

or until the lentils are soft and the vegetables are tender. Prepare the caramelised onions while the soup cooks. If using cardamom pods, crush them (the bottom of a pan works nicely) and remove the seeds. Grind the seeds into a powder with a mortar and pestle. Heat a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and heat until the oil dances. Add the onion, cardamom and coriander. Keep the heat high so the onions begin to brown, stirring continuously. If the onions start sticking to the sides of the pan, add a little water. Continue cooking for 10 minutes, or until the onions are caramelised and golden brown. Reduce the heat if necessary to keep them from burning. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Fill bowls with soup and top with a tablespoon of onions and serve, or simply stir the onions into the soup. A Good Read Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins Praise for this novel, first published at the beginning of 2015, has spread like wildfire and it has become THE book to read. So just in case you are one of the few that hasn’t succumbed to this thriller, why should you pick it up? Whether you are a regular commuter, like the central character Rachel, or not, you will easily be able to identify with the opening section. How many times have you sat on a train and looked out of the window into the garden or kitchen windows of the houses that back onto the tracks, as you speed past on your way to your final destination. As you catch glimpses into a life that you don’t know, do you wonder about the people that occupy those houses? Rachel doesn’t have to wonder. She passes familiar houses every day and purposefully looks for Jess and Jason, a young professional couple who live a perfect life. She knows them and is in many ways envious of their relationship. Seeing them in their garden is a moment of comfort as her own life is falling apart. But is all as it seems? On one day, as the train slows down at a signal by the house, Rachel notices that something is amiss. Suddenly she is sucked into a nightmare that seems destined to reveal everything, and that will shock you as her commuter journey turns out to be anything but normal. It’s a small world, but when that world comes crashing down around you, it becomes all too clear that this small world is a lot smaller than you first thought.

Midnight for Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo It is now nearly a decade since the last Harry Potter book was published, and a new generation are quite rightly discovering this wonderful world of wizards and magic. Just like the generation before them, they are left with a void after reading them all, and so where do they turn? The Charlie Bone series of books may well be just what they are looking for. Published in 2002, Midnight for Charlie Bone is the first of this eight book series. Charlie is a fairly normal 10 year old boy. His father died when he was little, and he lives with his mum and two grandmas, and hangs out with his best friend Ben. One Friday Charlie hears voices coming from a photograph, and then his whole life changes. He learns that his three unmarried greataunts, known as the Yewbeams, are going to fund his education and a private school called Bloor’s Academy. Charlie is not happy about this: he knows the school to be a stuffy place for geniuses, and he certainly won’t fit in there. But the Yewbeams are insistent: and besides, they pay for his mum’s living expenses and so he really has no choice. They explain to Charlie that he is ‘endowed’ and can read the minds of people in photographs. Everyone at Bloor’s Academy has a talent. Charlie’s father went there and he was a musician. But what is Charlie’s talent? Placed in the music department at Bloor’s, despite having no musical talent, it becomes clear that there is another group of children at the school who are all endowed with some mystical magical talent. Soon he finds that he was born into a world he never knew existed. By Willow Coby

Stokenchurch Medical Centre Voluntary Support Groups. The NHS is daily in the news, and provides a multitude of care services from GP Practice to Hospital and care provision within Communities. It is tasked with providing a host of care from our birth to our passing, and is sometimes criticised when a possible remedy/treatment is judged by NICE as being too expensive or not proven. This said it can’t possibly provide everything and many times the gaps are filled either by public health bodies working for County Councils, or voluntary agencies. One such agency supported by Bucks County Council (BCC) is looking to establish within communities a greater understanding and compassion towards Dementia sufferers. This illness will affect most families at some point, and no doubt many of us have relatives or friends who have experienced or are suffering with this illness. A great deal of research money and time is being devoted into attempted to find reasons for, and possible solutions to halt or reverse this brain disease. BCC has selected Stokenchurch and surround as a pilot area to see if they can create a place where there is greater understanding and support for sufferers and their families. What does this mean? • How often have we become impatient in a queue when the person in front has forgotten their card, or become confused? • Are our services available and ‘Dementia friendly’? Doctors, Dentist, shops, Banks, hotels, pubs etc. • How about the person in the street who looks genuinely lost or distressed – Do we just walk on by? • How about our neighbours who may-be struggling, and then we hear they have been ‘ripped off’? PAGE 30

If you are interested in learning more or feel that you can help make Stokenchurch and surrounding area more ‘Dementia Friendly’ then please contact Gemma Workman on dfcommunities@buckscc.gov.uk Another valued support group who meet on the last Wednesday of every month at the Medical Centre is the Carer’s Support Group. • Are you someone who cares for a relative or friend? • Do you often feel unsupported or alone? • Would you like to find out about what is available locally and nationally to support you in your caring role? Jenny or Victoria who organise the group including speakers can be contacted on Tel; 01491-638245. Or just pop along – You will be made most welcome. Big Garden Birdwatch It started back in 1979 when the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) invited its junior members to count the number of birds in their gardens over a weekend in winter. The aim was to work out the ten most common birds in the United Kingdom, and thanks to children’s TV programme Blue Peter, thirty four thousand youngsters took part! The Big Garden Birdwatch has taken place every year since, with over half a million people – adults as well as children - regularly taking part. Last year, more than 8.5 million birds were counted, with house sparrows being the most common sighting, followed by starlings, blackbirds, blue tits and wood pigeons. The annual survey has identified that certain species

This year the Big Garden Birdwatch takes place on the weekend of 30th and 31st January. To take part, you need to watch for one hour the birds that land in your garden or local park, record the highest number of each bird species you see at the same time (not over the entire hour, as you may end up counting some birds twice), then report back your findings. At this time of the year, when the days are short and the nights are long, what better time to start to think about some winter sunshine. Chasing the sun and the warmth in winter offers you numerous holiday options - for those of you who prefer a shorter flight, around four and a half hours, the most popular destinations are the Canary Islands - Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. With temperatures averaging 20 degrees and higher this is a wonderful place to visit during the winter months. There is a wide choice of accommodation -

apartments, villas and a choice of 3, 4 and 5 star hotels. The Canaries also boast fine cuisine across all the islands whether it be traditional Spanish tapas or fine worldwide dining. Travelling further afield gives you an amazing choice of destinations - The United Arab Emirates - Dubai in particular not only offers wonderful hotels and amazing man made beaches but for those shopaholics amongst you, you are spoilt for choice. Flights are approximately 7 hours from many UK airports and you enjoy temperatures @ 26 degrees. The best time to travel is October through to April - as you move into summer the temperatures can be as hot as 40 degrees. Another winter destination is the Caribbean - so much choice - pick up a cruise in Miami and visit a variety of islands over 7, 10, 11 or 14 nights. Alternatively fly direct to some of the Caribbean islands direct from the UK Antigua, Barbados and Jamaica for example. Flight times are @ 11 hours so we would recommend a minimum 10 day stay. There are some amazing properties to stay at in the Caribbean - whether you prefer a self catering apartment on the beach or a luxury hotel the choice is

endless. The Caribbean boasts some of the most magnificent beaches where it is often difficult to find another person nearby. Temperatures in the winter are high - the best months really being January through to April. This way you avoid the hurricane season and the tropical rain season. Once you start to travel further afield the holiday choices broaden - Maldives, Mauritius, Mexico to name but three. The winter is a perfect time to take a break - recharge the batteries, avoid some of the UK winter weather, save on those fuel bills! - relax and enjoy the wonders of the world.

Snowdrop Teas at Aston Rowant Church Fiveways is a small Nature Conservation area managed by Aston Rowant Parish Council who have installed a short path and little bridges over a small chalk stream, with the support of a Sustainability Grant from the Chilterns Conservation Board. There is also a log seat on which Supplied by to relax. The area used to be Alan Gooders an important part of the village until the nineteenth century, with simple farm cottages beside the bridleway. We presume that the lovely snowdrops were originally planted in their gardens. This would have been an important crossing of tracks in the Middle Ages. An important Drovers Trail, the Lower Icknield Way crossed the Old London Weye from London to Oxford here and there were Church Way Footpaths that converged from Postcombe and Kingston Stert. There was water from the stream, wood and flint from the hills, employment on the land, and we also think that there was even a fish pond close by!

Supplied by Chris French

PAGE 46

The Aston Rowant Parish Council have cleared a lot of dead and diseased shrubs and trees, and these were replaced with new species of small tree and shrubs provided by SSE. The Council have also funded a big planting programme spreading wild flower seeds and planting bulbs, all indigenous species. Winter Aconites and Fritillaria bulbs have been planted on the stream side and English and Welsh Daffodils, Wood Anemones, and English Bluebells have also been added. On Sunday 14th February, from 2pm – 4.30pm, please visit the wonderful snowdrops in Church Lane at Fiveways, Aston Rowant and enjoy scrumptious Tea and Cakes in the church. There will also be duck races along the stream (for which there will be a small charge). Please wear boots or wellies! The event is being organised jointly by the Church and Aston Rowant Parish Council and all profits are for the Church Funds. Viewing the snowdrops is free! Hopefully the Aconites will add some bright yellow flowers at the time of the Snowdrop Sunday. Mike Eaton and Peter Hetherington - for Aston Rowant Parish Council.

Plant of the Month Primrose The first sight of a primrose can never fail to warm the cockles of one’s heart, especially if the winter months have been somewhat dreary.

Growing these pretty plants is relatively easy and can be grown from seed, sown outdoors in a cold frame during winter. Once they’ve got their second or third leaves they can be put out into the garden, either at the front of a bed or in a container. They don’t grow overly tall and need planting in lightly shaded areas about 6-12 inches apart. Keep an eye on slugs

and snails as these can often affect the plants otherwise enjoy the white, yellow, red and pink colours that will bloom.

The Journey Continues…

“Romeo is very affectionate and enthusiastic. He loves work, and he loves life. He’s a great little dog.” This is what Joyce, his volunteer puppy socialiser, thinks about Romeo. She’s one of our most experienced volunteer socialisers, and has been socialising our puppies since 1996. So, she knows what makes a ‘great little dog’! More than any other dog Joyce has socialised, Romeo can get other dogs to play with him. Out in the park, he runs rings around them until they join in. It’s like a magic spell. Everyone exclaims that Romeo has somehow cajoled their dog, who never plays with other dogs, into having a run-around.

Off to Big School Romeo has started basic soundwork training. This is what really makes a hearing dog unique, in that they learn to associate sounds with specific actions, and then alert their deaf recipient to those sounds. He has started learning to run to the cooker timer when it goes off. Deaf people need to be alerted to this sound, to avoid burnt dinners or worse. To do this, Joyce sets the timer for five seconds and when it beeps he runs to it for a treat. She is also teaching him nosenudging. This is how hearing

dogs alert deaf people to other sounds such as the doorbell. Joyce is encouraging him to nudge the palm of her hand, by giving him treats. It’s the beginning of a very important action that Romeo will need to use a lot when he is matched with a deaf recipient.

What’s next for Romeo? Joyce is planning on improving Romeo’s ‘wait’. This is important for when he becomes a hearing dog, because he will need to wait at the side of the road before crossing, at the front door when his deaf recipient answers it, and so on. To do this, Joyce tells him to wait, walks ten paces away from him, turns back round, and holds his attention. Romeo should be able to wait for a minute but his current record is 20 seconds. So, his next small step is going to be about improving his focus and not being so distracted. However, his next big hurdle will be when he leaves Joyce, to start his advanced soundwork training at our centre in Yorkshire. This is where he’ll build on the basic work he’s already done with Joyce, associating more sounds with more actions. And with that, here ends your second update about Romeo, our ‘great little dog’. We hope you have enjoyed reading about him!

Visit to BT Tower

A group of us from Stokenchurch Parish Council recently visited the BT Tower situated just outside Stokenchurch on the A40 to Oxford. Standing at the bottom, you begin to realise how tall it is. The height to the top is 87.9m with a circumference of 12.9m. It was built in the mid-1960s and is one of the few Towers built with reinforced concrete. It was built to relay the UK’s TV and Voice telecommunications up and down the country, and was also part of the vast network of Radio Towers that spanned the UK. The Tower has mobile operator Sector antennas placed at various levels. These sector antennas are used for mobile phone communications only. It has five external galleries and on a clear day, most of the taller buildings in London can be seen from the first gallery. Although officially built for civilian purposes, the microwave network built in the late 1950s and into the 1960s was operated by what was then the General Post Office and was primarily to carry telephone, television and radar signals and digital data which included both civil and military. A separate system called “Radio Standby to Line”, consisted of spurs from the main backbone network to what were referred to as defence customer sites (which would have been the military communications). Its use of line-of-site microwave transmission was seen by the government as particularly important during the Cold War for its resilience against nuclear attack. Its use now is purely civilian. The tower is designed to sway a little in the wind, however the amount of

movement is minimal –approx. 10 - 20cm. These days the Radio Station is no longer permanently manned. A mixture of BT Transmission, Rigging, and Power engineers frequent the site as do BTSF. (Building Faculties) staff. It was a most interesting morning and our grateful thanks go to Wayne, BT and Darren Hayday. Written by Mr & Mrs Mike Jones
