Editors’ Letter Welcome to the first issue of Chiltern View (Villages) in 2015. We do hope you have all had a fabulous Christmas, made the most of time spent with family and friends and are looking forward to the year ahead. We’re very proud of our very seasonal front cover, although we rather hope that the snow is not with us in any quantity when you receive this. We are reasonably confident though that you WILL receive the magazine on a regular basis because we have a fantastic team of local deliverers who do their very best to get the magazines out on time, and in all weathers. They are managed and organised by our Distribution Manager, Sharon and we would like to thank them (and Sharon of course) for all their hard work in 2014. January is often a time for new plans, particularly in the home and garden, and our magazine is full of great local advertisers who can help you put those plans into action over the coming months. We have everything from aerials to windows, so why not give a local company a call today and see if you can turn a dream into reality this year. Until the next time

Famous People of the Chilterns: Rupert Brooke Rupert Brooke was a poet in the early 20th century who celebrated England and the English countryside. He is best known for his famous Five War Sonnets, reflecting the patriotic mood that largely prevailed at the start of the First World War. One of them includes the famous line: ‘If I should die, think only this of me: that there’s some corner of a foreign field that is forever England’. Brooke’s Romantic vision of England included the Chilterns. Before the war he would take the train to Wendover, and from there walk along the ridge of hills to Princes Risborough. He and his friends would refresh themselves on such walks at the Pink and Lily pub at Parslow’s Hillock, above Princes Risborough, where they enjoyed some very merry lunches. The Pink and Lily is still open and Brooke’s favourite niche in the pub is dedicated to his memory, with photos and excerpts from his poetry. His many visits to this area inspired him to pen his poem The Chilterns, which includes the evocative verse: ‘I shall desire and I shall find the best of my desires; the autumn road, the mellow wind that soothes the darkening shires. And laughter, and inn-fires.’ As poet, scholar, dramatist, literary critic, travel writer, political activist and soldier ‘the handsomest man in England’ packed plenty into his short life. When WW1 began he joined the Royal PAGE 8
Naval Division. He did not live to see much action though: in 1915, en route to Gallipoli, he contracted sepsis following a mosquito bite and died. He was buried on the Greek island of Skyros. You can follow in Brooke’s footsteps by walking the Ridgeway National Trail between Wendover and Princes Risborough, or take a circular walk from Risborough town centre and pop into the Pink and Lily pub for a merry lunch like Brooke. There is lots of information on local walks at www.chilternsaonb.org/walks-rides. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Around Britain 5 British Islands 1. Piel - Piel is the smallest of the four inhabited Islands of Furness that lie off the coast of Cumbria. Whilst the largest of these islands, Walney, is England’s eighth biggest and has a population of over 10,000, Piel is just 8 hectares in size and has a permanent population comprising the landlord – known as the ‘King of Piel’ – of the island’s Grade II listed Ship Inn. 2. Gairsay - Gairsay has a population of just 3, making it one of the least populated of all of Scotland’s offshore islands. Nevertheless, it is officially permitted by the Royal Mail to produce its own stamps. 3. Lundy - A little over one square mile in size, Lundy lies 12 miles off the north coast of Devon in the centre of the Bristol Channel. Despite its relative isolation and small size, Lundy has its own pub, shops and church, produces its own stamps, and has a resident population of 28. 4. The Calf of Man - Aside from the Isle of Man itself, the only other inhabited island in the Man group is the Calf of Man, a square-mile islet lying just off its southernmost tip. A census in 2006 recorded a population here of just 2 – namely the wardens of an RSPB bird observatory opened in 1962. 5. Brownsea - Brownsea is the largest of the dozen or so islands found in Poole Harbour in Dorset. It is also arguably the most well known, having been the location of Robert BadenPowell’s inaugural Boy Scout camp in August 1907. © Taken from The British Isles: A Trivia Gazetteer by Paul Anthony Jones, out now.

drained vegetables, peas and tomatoes. Stir well and simmer gently for 4-5 minutes. Add the lime juice and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve garnished with sliced red chilli pepper and oregano leaves.
TIP
Paneer is an Indian vegetarian cheese which has a firm texture and goes particularly well with spices and garlic, chilli and ginger. You can use drained and cubed tofu instead, if preferred.
Bring a pan of water to the boil. Add the carrots and boil for 5 minutes until almost tender adding the cauliflower and broccoli florets for the last 2 minutes. Drain well and set aside. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat. Add the paneer and mushrooms and stir-fry over a high heat for 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the onion to the pan and fry very gently for about 10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, ginger and chilli and fry for a further 2-3 minutes then stir in the Thai paste and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Pour in the coconut milk and bring to the boil then reduce the heat and return the paneer and mushrooms to the pan along with the PAGE 20

Gym Phobic
If you’re gym-phobic, sign up here. By Kate McLelland I took a different route into town recently and came across my local gym for the first time. As I walked by, music was pumping at high volume, the wall-mounted TV screens were flashing and I saw rows of fit, lycra-clad young people lifting, pushing and jogging: using pieces of equipment that looked as though they had been stripped out of an alien spacecraft.
However, the word ‘Yoga’ covers many different kinds of practice so you should do some careful research before putting your name down for a class. For example, Iyengar is about perfecting poses, holding them for a period of time while breathing deeply and checking your body’s alignment, while Ashtanga yoga can be vigorous and intense.
This year, tempted by the discounted membership fee advertised in my local paper, I had actually thought of signing up, but one look through those expensive, plate glass windows made me think again. With my spreading waistline on display over the top of my 1990s jogging pants, I would have felt more out of place than a penguin in the tropics. The image of modern gyms as temples to the young and super-fit is hard to shake off, although I’m sure most instructors would protest that all ages and sizes are welcome. Surveys suggest that when it comes to keeping fit, less than 20% of us are prepared to use a gym. So where can you go if, like me, you no longer match the description “young and super-fit” and have an intermittent back problem that gets worse with vigorous exercise? Most health experts recommend that people undertake at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical exercise (or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise) per week to stay healthy, so unless you spend just over 21 minutes per day involved in tasks that qualify as “moderate intensity” such as vacuuming, mopping, walking briskly or mowing the lawn, you may need help when it comes to staying fit. If you want a really gentle form of exercise that aids mobility and balance, you might try Tai Chi. Originally developed as a martial art, this discipline combines relaxation and deep breathing with slow, gentle continuous movements: improving muscle strength in the legs, helping your balance and reducing stress. There is even some evidence that Tai Chi can help people who have rheumatoid arthritis in the ankle, hip and knee. Many people are dissuaded from taking up Yoga by those images of practitioners with limbs contorted into eye-watering positions - but there’s really no need to fear. The first principle of Yoga is to do as much, or as little, as your body feels capable of doing. Of course, that may be hard if you’re naturally competitive and you find yourself in class next to someone who can cross their legs in the lotus position whilst standing on their head, but as you work at it you’ll gradually learn to go at your own pace.
PAGE 28
If you don’t want a class where you need to move around, Pilates might be the one for you. Pilates has many similarities to Yoga and focuses on rebalancing the body, improving posture and building both muscle strength and endurance through slow, controlled movements. Nordic Walking is easy on your joints and works well for all ages and fitness levels. It is an enhancement of walking, where special poles are used to engage the upper body muscles as well as the legs. The poles help to propel the walker along, creating an effective, full-body workout that actually feels easier than normal walking. There are a range of classes available, from gentle walks for people with health issues to workout-style walks, which offer a great way to lose weight and tone your whole body. Finally, you may have heard about Zumba. This is a dance exercise craze started by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto Perez in the 1990s, using the Latin rhythms of salsa, merengue, mamba and chachacha as the inspiration for a fun fitness programme. You can join a class at any level, from a slower, beginners’ session to a full-on aerobic work out. Active older adults can take part in a Zumba Gold class, offering a lower intensity version of the normal Zumba routines. Many of the exercise methods mentioned here can cater for people with health issues (but do see your doctor if you have concerns). A good instructor will want to know about any problems you have, so make sure to tell yours if you have any conditions that might affect your ability to undertake certain exercises. You can find out more at www.nhs.uk/livewell/fitness. If – like me – the sight of a gym leaves you sweating before the workout even begins, there’s no longer an excuse to stay at home. Forget the lycra: just get out there and get fit.

The truly ‘green’ garden
There are so many ways in which you can plot and scheme about all that your garden could have to offer in 2015, but there’s one thing I would ask you to consider: take the plunge, ring the changes and ‘Go Organic’. Many gardeners have decided that they really want to concentrate on natural methods of pest control and the use of natural fertilising materials rather than chemical feeds. And they do it because it works and makes life so much better for the other less powerful creatures and plants we share our space with. Since we moved to our Hampshire garden nearly twenty years ago, I have kept it completely organic and believe me, it really is not difficult. Weed control can certainly be harder as there is no resorting to herbicides such as glyphosate, but if your garden doesn’t have too many persistent weeds, even that should not be too difficult. If you do have an existing problem then make weeding a regular part of your gardening time and you’ll be pleasantly surprised how speedily you start to get on top of it. True, organic gardening does take a bit more planning and forethought. If you grow vegetables you will need to ensure that you rotate your crops. Just divide the space you have into three or four chunks and then ensure that each year you grow related crops together and then the following year, move each group into a new plot. It also pays to ensure that you really do garden as ‘well’ as you can, avoiding too many short cuts and taking the plant’s health and vigour as a prime consideration. In any part of the garden you need to try to choose plants that really are suited to the site as those grown in unsuitable conditions will be more prone to disease and pest attack.
pests or a disease outbreak before it gets too bad. Sprays of certain kinds are ‘allowed’ (those based on soft soap to control certain pests, copper based fungicides to control diseases etc) but most organic gardeners prefer to avoid them altogether. I am a great fan of horticultural fleece. Placed over a crop such as calabrese from the moment you plant it out, you should be able to ward off all the common pests including caterpillars, cabbage root fly and aphids. Traps such as submerged beakers of old beer or milk to catch slugs and sticky yellow cards to trap flying pests, all work well. Of course for many pests there are also biological controls available, plus a whole range of controls to stop greenhouse pests. Keeping the soil in good condition is a must and if you don’t already have a compost bin or heap, get on and make or buy one straight away. The choice is up to you, but I strongly recommend it, for a whole host of reasons, only some of which I have mentioned here. By Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com to make veg growing easy with ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’. Pippa sends your chosen veg plants to you and each week emails advice and tips for getting the best results; plus lots of great barriers and biological controls
Regular patrols to find problems, so that they can be caught at the early stages and dealt with promptly, mean fewer problems in the long-term and should ensure that you catch an infestation of PAGE 36

A New Year. A Fresh Start? Let’s make 2015 your best year for years!
This is the time of year when concern about older loved ones is most acute. The weather is inclement, days are short and it can be difficult or even dangerous to get around. For anyone who is interested in finding out more about care for themselves or their loved ones, we’re able to help. We offer a refreshing alternative to a traditional nursing home. Our new purposebuilt homes are beautifully appointed with private en-suite bedrooms, inviting dining areas and stylish lounges. Our menu is excellent and varied; and our approach to activities, hobbies and entertainment is award-winning. Most importantly our care and nursing is, we believe, second to none. This is perhaps why many describe our care homes as the best in the UK. Make that first step towards creating a positive 2015 for yourself or someone you care about. Please call us on 01494 480292 and speak to our Home Manager, Georgina Watts who can tell you more about Chiltern Grange.

Plant of the Month
Mimosa
A beautiful evergreen and originating from Australia, the mimosa is a super shrub for a sheltered garden or conservatory. They don’t like the cold so avoid planting in cold places and protect from frost wherever possible. Best planted in the spring these plants are beautiful all year round, with hanging feathery branches and scented, bobbly flowers that range from lemony to egg yolk yellow. They generally grow up to 3m tall and caring for established plants is relatively easy although they PAGE 42
do need a little pruning from time to time as they grow quickly. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk
Book Review The Land Down Under When it’s cold and frosty outside, there’s no better time to get reacquainted with our antipodean friends as they celebrate Australia Day on January the 26th. It’s a ripper opportunity to throw a few shrimp on the barbie, and while you’re cooking up a storm on the beach, you can sit back and read some bonza books about the land Down Under. Everybody Jam Ali Lewis This is the story of Danny, who lives on a remote cattle station in the outback, and his brother who has died, his teenage sister who’s pregnant and the rather green English backpacker who’s the latest hired help. Everybody Jam refers to strawberry jam, that’s universally loved by one and all, no matter what their background or status. In Danny’s world, everyone’s gearing up for the great annual muster and it’s a make or break business, with the family pushed to its limits and fighting to survive under the intense heat of the blazing sun. It was written for young adults but if you’ve ever been a gap year student, or you fancy a true Aussie experience, then Everybody Jam could give you a real flavour of what to expect. A Town like Alice Nevil Shute For many, Nevil Shute’s novel is the first they read that really gives them a drive to travel to Australia. It’s a compelling tale of love and war which sees Englishwoman Jean Paget captured by the Japanese in the heart of the Malaysian jungle and
PAGE 44
then forced to endure a death march lasting many months. From Malaysia, Jean returns home, but not for long as she then returns to the Far East to give something back to those who helped save her life. Where she ends up is in a remote part of Oz which challenges her resolve once again. She may not be a bona fide ‘Sheila’, but given what she’s been through, Jean’s got the resilience of a real Aussie battler. Eucalyptus Murray Bail Murray Bail has written an unusual and touching love story which has grown straight from the craggy Aussie soil itself. Widower Holland has two things he is proud of: his daughter Ellen, and his impressive collection of eucalyptus trees. He has grown every single variety of the gums and it’s the inspiration for a challenge to any of Ellen’s suitors. Holland decrees that Ellen may only marry the man who can correctly identify all of them. While many come by to try and subsequently fail, Ellen spends her days being entertained by a stranger who appears under the shadow of a tree one day. Enchanted and intrigued by his stories of distant lands, Ellen begins to fall in love. It’s a beautiful story that will capture your heart and nurture a longing for romance and travel. The gruff widower Holland has two possessions he cherishes above all others: his sprawling property of eucalyptus trees and his ravishingly beautiful daughter, Ellen. When Ellen turns nineteen Holland makes an announcement: she may marry only the man who can correctly name the species of each of the hundreds of gum trees on his property.

The onset of winter brings with it NHS drives and initiatives to protect those most vulnerable against serious conditions such as flu and bronchitis. But how much do we really know about these illnesses. In a series of articles we will look at some of the most common and not so common. We start with Bronchiolitis;
Facts
• Bronchiolitis is an inflammation of the bronchioles, the smaller airways in the bronchial tree (the lungs). • It is common in the winter months. Roughly 1 in every 3 children in the UK is affected. • It mainly affects children aged 1-12 months, but occasionally can be seen up to 18 months of age. • 90% are caused by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), but other viruses include parainfluenza, influenza, rhinovirus and adenovirus. • These viruses cause swelling and mucus production within the bronchioles, which in turn causes bronchiole obstruction and reduced ventilation.
Symptoms
• Bronchiolitis often starts with common cold symptoms such as runny nose and cough. Then develops the rapid and laboured breathing, noisy breathing, rapid heartbeat, temperatures and if severe there is difficulty with drinking and food intake. • The course of the condition generally worsens over the first 3 days and then a slow recovery occurs over the following 7-10 days. • Most cases are mild however, and improve without any treatment. • As the condition is viral, antibiotics are not effective unless there is a secondary additional bacterial infection as well as the original virus. PAGE 46
Therefore treatment is supportive only. • If there is evident distress with the baby, hospital treatment may be required to provide oxygen and help with feeding/fluid intake. • If you are in any doubt about your baby’s breathing then you should contact your GP for a consultation and advice. The condition needs diagnosing properly to exclude other possibilities such as the common cold, chest infections and asthma. • DIAL 111/999 IF YOUR CHILD IS HAVING A LOT OF DIFFICULTY BREATHING - this is apparent with using tummy muscles and seeing the skin between the ribs pull into the chest when breathing. Also there should never be long pauses between breaths, and if this occurs ring for an ambulance.
Prevention
• Parental smoking increases the risk, so prevent any exposure to smoke/smoking. • Maintain good hygiene with hand washing, and cleaning toys regularly. • Avoid individuals with cold symptoms. • If any child is unwell then please don’t expose them to other at risk babies. Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Vinny, I’m a 3 year old large mixed breed. I am so much fun to be around and I love learning new thing once you can get me motivated! I would like a quiet but active home where my new family have experience of large breeds. I will need at least 2 hours of exercise a day and would like a large garden so I can have a run around as my re-call is not very good especially around wildlife. I will need owners who can work with me and visitors to the home – I will need to be kept behind a dog gate as I can get nervous of people I don’t know. I may be able to live with another dog but not cats and would like a home where any children are aged 16years and over. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog PAGE 50

The Better Life Winter Flue Jab “We should have done this last year,” Anne stared reproachfully at the anaerobic fireplace puffing in the little back room. That cat glanced in my direction and then walked off in disgust. She was right of course - Anne, I mean. In my defence, we hadn’t needed to light the fire during the summer and I hadn’t decided then that it was high time I had a special place to do my writing. It seems that chimney sweeps are a curious blend of the ancient and the modern. Our regular ‘traditional’ sweep arrived in a top-of-the-range Land Rover Defender (i.e. a proper Land Rover) with a set of poles, a vacuum cleaner, a laptop and a tiny camera. The sheets went down and it didn’t take him long to diagnose the problem. “You’ve got a bad case of Jackdaw-itis,” he said as we gathered around his laptop. The camera was swiftly replaced with a brush and we retreated to the kitchen to put the kettle on. Our sweep made an array of interesting noises and did battle, calling us back in a little later - as witnesses - once the jackdaw nest had yielded. It was a complete mess and my comment about there being some good kindling in there failed to win Anne over.
Lesson over, we brought out tea and Anne’s ginger shortbreads to accompany tales of terrible chimneys in the area - a list we’d now joined. We listened, enviously, as Trevor (not his real name) told us about his chickens - Molly, Polly and Dolly (named by his children). He regaled us with the story of the fox that came near the chicken run at 11pm every night until they left it an alarm clock, a plan that backfired when it went off because it freaked out the hens. Trevor also has a miniorchard of five trees. I knew enough to drop into the conversation, “M9 root stock,” which seemed to impress him. He revealed his skill at dowsing, having located a water source in a field for a local farmer, using just a forked hazel stick and a pendulum (for a second opinion). Some of his stories were genuinely quite odd, although the cat seemed to really take to him and she’s an excellent judge of character. We added a date on our gardening calendar for the new cowl to be fitted, weather permitting, and sent him on his way. I look forward to his next visit; I want to hear about his 20-year-old tortoise.
However, we weren’t out of the woods yet, so to speak; we were about to get an education. Yes, we knew that we needed a cowl fitted; and no, of course we didn’t burn much unseasoned wood. Pine is the worst culprit - it clogs up the chimney and is liable to spit. Burning driftwood indoors is another no-no, due to salt corrosion on cast iron, and wooden pallets may be treated with chemicals. PAGE 54
Once Trevor left I was true to my work and went outside to sift the debris for kindling. I also started wondering whether a log burning stove would be better for the back room, on the grounds of efficiency and aesthetics. After all, there’s always a faint chance that one of my books will eventually need a backcover photograph of the author at work. It now pays to go GREEN!
The greatest contributor to energy costs in an average household are heating and hot water, this account’s for around 89% of energy consumption. There are many things you can do to reduce energy bills such as insulating your home and replacing old inefficient boilers. However, with escalating fossil fuel prices it’s still very concerning how much our bills will continue to rise. There is an ECO friendly green option that not only reduces energy bills but it now pays to go green!
Biomass Renewable Energy Biomass heating systems work by burning renewable fuel such as locally produced wood pellet, chips or logs. These boilers are designed to provide heat using an existing ‘wet system’ (eg through radiators) and provide hot water to a home.
announcement of The Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme. This is a financial incentive to encourage the uptake of renewable energy products. Quite literally home owners are now being paid to go green in an effort by the government to create a sustainable future using renewable energy over fossil fuels, and reduce the UK’s Carbon footprint to meet EU targets. Off grid properties benefit the most, however Biomass isn’t limited to just off grid. Anyone can apply from homeowners, private, social, landlords and people that build their own homes are eligible for the RHI scheme, and there is also a commercial tariff for businesses such as golf clubs, garden centres, farmers, new build developers etc. This is a major step forward in creating a greener planet, ensuring we progress away from fossil fuels and into a new era. There has never been a better time to go green!
At first glance the idea of burning wood does not seem like a “Green” solution, however burning Biomass fuel creates a carbon cycle and removes the need for burning Fossil fuels. When we burn Fossil fuels, large carbon stores are removed from the earth and pumped into the atmosphere. This raises the level of C02 and increases global warming. When we burn Biomass fuel we release the same amount of CO2 which was absorbed from the atmosphere by the plant. It also releases the same amount of C02 as would be released through a natural cycle of decay. Biomass boilers are becoming an extremely viable option and investment since the government’s recent PAGE 56

Crossroads Veterinary Centre
It’s the start of the New Year and the perfect time to organise your pet’s annual ‘M.O.T.’
leptospirosis and canine hepatitis. Kittens are routinely vaccinated against: cat flu, feline enteritis and feline leukaemia virus.
A routine check-up is a great way to ensure your pet is in optimum health and can allow your vet to detect signs of problems that are on the horizon, possibly sparing you the trauma of an emergency visit later on. It is also a great time to ensure that your pet’s preventative health plan is up to date, including vaccines and anti-parasite treatment.
Following the primary course your pet will require annual ‘booster’ vaccines to keep their immunity at a safe level. Without boosters their immunity will wane and they are at risk of contracting diseases. Vets are very careful to avoid over vaccination – they give a slightly different vaccine each year to ensure that your pets schedule is tailored to exactly what they require and nothing more. That’s why your vet always checks your pet’s records to see what has been given over the last few years.
Vaccinations help protect your pet from potentially fatal diseases. Kittens & puppies require a ‘primary course’ when they are young which involves multiple injections at specific timings to prime their immune system – talk to your vet to see what schedule they recommend. Puppies are routinely vaccinated against: distemper, parvovirus,

COULD COUNSELLING HELP YOU? Sometimes it’s difficult to say what’s on your mind. Talking to a therapist can help you cope with difficulty and make positive change. Therapy is a very personal process: It offers you a safe, confidential place to talk about your life and anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable; and it allows you to talk with someone who is trained to listen attentively and to help you improve things. My name is Kate and I know that sometimes we can all find it hard to cope. I believe counselling can help. I am a humanistic, person-centred counsellor with a warm, caring and non-judgemental approach. I am experienced in working with adults, children and young people on a one-to-one basis offering short and long term therapy. If you feel you would like to talk through any issues you may have, please do contact me. To advertise here please call Jan on 07712 816336
