StagecoachCharity CharityExtravaganza! Extravaganza! Stagecoach Sunday 22 March 6pm, The Waterside Theatre, Aylesbury Students from Stagecoach Aylesbury and Stagecoach Thame are looking forward to performing in their fantastic charity show at The Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury. A total of 250 local students will present an evening of song, dance and drama all in aid of local charity the Florence Nightingale Hospice. The students range in age from 5-18 years and many will be making their debut on a professional stage. Rehearsals are well underway and the show will include a

specially written piece featuring hits from the 1980s, along with selections from well-loved musicals. It promises to be a night to remember! Our chosen Charity, Florence Nightingale Hospice provides valuable support and both inpatient and at-home services for local families affected by life-limiting illness across Aylesbury Vale. The charity needs to raise £600,000 a year to continue providing that much needed care, and Stagecoach is very proud to be able to dedicate all profits from the show to this worthy cause.

Editors’ Letter

Welcome to the March/April issue of Chiltern View Villages magazine. We do hope that you like our front cover for this issue – it made us all smile here at Chiltern View HQ! The donkey is from Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (www.donkeyrescue.co.uk) near Wallingford and you can find out more about this amazing place on P16, including information about opening times and adopting a donkey. Continuing our ‘animal’ theme we are delighted to announce that we have teamed up with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People ( www.hearingdogs.org.uk) to sponsor a puppy in 2015 ( Romeo) and we plan to keep you all up to date with his progress in every issue. You can meet him for the first time on P 40. We are also delighted that we are launching a new competition this issue in conjunction with Wycombe Swan Theatre (wycombeswan.co.uk) and the prize will be 2 tickets to see ‘Anything Goes, which is running from Monday 18th – Saturday 23rd May. Details of how to enter the competition can be found at the bottom of p60. We hope we have included something for everyone this issue, lots of local businesses and plenty of local community news. Until next time….

Fix My Street

Bumpy ride this morning? View blocked by dumped rubbish? Potholes and fly tipping are just two of the street faults that can be reported via the website www.FixMyStreet.com, along with vandalism, graffiti, dog fouling and many other common community issues. While most of us know that the council are responsible for fixing these things, we may not know which council, let along which department in which council. With FixMyStreet, all you have to do is locate the problem on a map, and select a category: the site then sends it off to the right place to get it fixed. All reports are published on the site, as well as being sent to the council. Browsing your

own postcode can be interesting, as you soon learn what the persistent problems are in your area, and whether or not they are being fixed. There’s also the opportunity to discuss individual reports in the comments section. FixMyStreet comes from the UK not-forprofit organisation mySociety, and is one of its longest-running and most-used services. It is just one of several projects aimed at making it easier for citizens to get things changed in their own community. So, next time you see something that needs fixing, be it a broken paving slab or a flickering streetlight, all you need to remember is FixMyStreet.com.

Famous People of the Chilterns: William Morris William Morris, the great industrialist and philanthropist, was in his day Britain’s richest self-made man, but lived relatively modestly in the Chilterns near Wallingford. Born in 1877, William Morris set up a business at the age of 16 with £4, repairing bicycles in his father’s garden shed in Oxford. In 1912 he produced the first of his well-known cars in his garage in Oxford’s Longwall Street, going on to expand the business into its huge factory in Cowley. It was here that he mass-produced the Morris Minor and the other affordable models that made Morris Motors the most successful car manufacturer in Europe. In 1933 William Morris bought a country house called Nuffield Place, in the little village of Nuffield above Wallingford, and it remained his home until his death in 1963. In 1938 he became Viscount Nuffield, thus putting the name of this little Chiltern village firmly on the map. Despite being super-wealthy, William Morris and his wife were a modest, down-to-earth couple. Their home was very comfortable but not ostentatious and though they had servants, Lady Nuffield sewed the uniforms for them herself. Lord Nuffield repaired his own shoes in a bedroom cupboard fitted out as a miniature workshop to while away sleepless nights.

motoring magnate’s small Wolseley car that he drove until his death. You can see for yourself as the National Trust now owns the house and opens it to the public. William Morris is buried in a characteristically simple grave beside Nuffield Church – you can see it from the Ridgeway National Trail, which runs past the churchyard. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Find out more about our work on the website above.

The house and its contents remain as they left them, a complete and compelling survival of a 1930s upper-middle class home. As well as the original furniture and décor there are photographs, books, letters, official robes and many other personal possessions. The garage still houses the PAGE 12

Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary, Oxfordshire Island Farm at Brightwell-cum-Sotwell was purchased in 1981 from the Hoare family of Wallingford who were coal merchants and pig producers. Following the first rescued donkey in 1993, word of mouth meant numbers steadily increased causing a growing financial pressure and it quickly became clear something had to be done. In May 1997 the Sanctuary became affiliated to a charity enabling the rescue work to continue. In July 2000 the Sanctuary was registered with the Charity Commission and from then became known as Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary. Currently the Sanctuary looks after over 120 donkeys while an almost equal number have been found new approved homes. Their ages range from new born to 30+ years and as a donkey can

live to 45-50 years it is important that they now spend their days in comfortable and friendly surroundings. Nearly all of the donkeys and many of the other animals at the Sanctuary have been rescued and it is only through the fund raising that this can continue. The donkey adoption scheme is one way of helping and makes an unusual gift for a relative or friend. There are many events held at the Sanctuary ranging from a simple car boot sale to bazaars, pony & donkey shows and a two day country show & miniature steam rally. www.donkeyrescue.co.uk We welcome visitors to the sanctuary and are open every day from 11am to 4pm.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Mike, I’m a 5 year old Terrier type. I am toy mad – when you meet me all I want to do is run and play fetch. I don’t like to be over-handled so will need people who can be patient and take their time whilst we build a bond together – the best way to do this is to play with me & my toys.

Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

I need a home with experienced owners, I need some further training! I will need a good sized, enclosed garden so I can play off lead. I don’t like other dogs in my space so would prefer to be the only pet in the house, and would like any children in my new home to be aged 16 years and over. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds and danger signals, providing a life-changing level of independence, confidence and companionship. Deafness is more than hearing loss - hearing dogs also help to relieve the stress, isolation and loneliness that deafness often brings. Chiltern View is delighted to sponsor puppy Romeo and will be following his training over the next 18 months until he is partnered with a deaf adult or child. The charity receives many requests from deaf people every year for a hearing dog due to the life changing benefits a partnership can bring. Puppy sponsorship plays a key role in the continued development of this vital service.

Meet Romeo: Romeo is a handsome brown Miniature Poodle with a fun and energetic character. He loves running around outside, exploring new environments and meeting other dogs. At eight weeks old Romeo went to stay with Joyce

and Harry, who have been volunteers for the Charity for many years. They’ve looked after 18 hearing dog puppies in training so they have plenty of experience! When Romeo arrived at his new home he was keen to explore the house and garden. Once he had looked around and settled in, Romeo met Joyce and Harry’s 13 year old pet dog Dipper. The two got on really well and after a few days Romeo started encouraging Dipper to play with him by chewing her ears and climbing on her. Romeo loves to follow Dipper around and she’s already showed him secret treasures in the garden – like the watering can where she enjoys an occasional drink. Romeo’s favourite toy is a woolly lamb, which he sleeps with and he carries around with him. He also enjoys playing with a ball and he is already really good at bringing it back.

Training Progress: Romeo has started attending puppy classes at our training centre in Yorkshire. His trainer Aime will work with him over the next few months, teaching him some of the skills and basic obedience that will be required as he progresses to advanced training. Romeo is already showing signs of being a fast learner, having started to pick-up some basic commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘down’ in his first class. He’ll be doing lots of classes over the next few months and getting valuable experience out and about with Joyce. You can sponsor hearing dog puppies Romeo and Rose from just £3 a month and help to change a life. Each welcome pack includes a certificate, gorgeous photos, and other exciting gifts and you will receive updates at key development stages over the 18 months of your sponsorship.

For more information about sponsoring a puppy visit www.hearingdogs.org.uk/puppy or call Hearing Dogs for Deaf People on 01844 348100. PAGE 40

Recipe of the Month

Shin of Beef Chilli Con Carne Serves 5-8 depending on your appetite.

Ten Mile Menu is a local company and works with farmers and producers in the Chiltern Hills, delivering organic veg boxes and a wide selection of local rare and traditional breed meats.

Here’s our take on the ultimate Chilli Con Carne, as cooked up at Ten Mile HQ! Using shin and applying a little extra love and patience turns an every-day dish into something mighty impressive! INGREDIENTS:

TO SERVE:

• 1kg good quality beef shin (we’re using pedigree Hereford beef butchered at Seasons Farm Shop, North Dean) • 250g diced pork belly (locally farmed Oxford Sandy & Black pork, optional, but Hugh likes it too!) • 100g diced chorizo (from The Merry Pig, Butlers Cross) • Fresh and/or dried chillies (we’re using 2 dried chipotle chillies and 2 medium red fresh chillies, but go with your taste and what is available) • Olive or Rapeseed oil for frying • 2-3 teaspoons ground cumin • 2-3 teaspoons smoked paprika (use hot if you like) • 1-2 teaspoons dried oregano • 2-3 Bay leaves • 5-6 cloves of garlic • 2 medium white onions (use red if you prefer) • Plenty of good salt and pepper (to taste, but don’t be shy) • 1-2 red peppers (as you prefer) • 1 pint of good stock (beef or chicken ideally) • 1-2 tins of chopped toms (depending on how much stock you use) • x1 400g tin of red kidney beans • 200g borlotti beans (we’re using some grown locally at Sandy Lane Farm, mix your beans as you see fit) • Seasoned Flour (to coat the beef)

• Soured Cream • Fluffy white rice

PAGE 42

METHOD: 1. Lightly coat your beef shin in the seasoned flour, making sure you keep it quite chunky, the sinews will melt into your sauce and leave you with much smaller pieces of meat than you started with. 2. Brown off the meat (in batches if need be) and set aside. Fry off the onion with the pork belly, adding the spices, seasoning and chorizo after a few minutes. 3. Add the beef back into the pan (now would be a good time to move to a heavy casserole pot if you didn’t start in one), then add stock, then tomatoes and bring to a simmer. 4. Pop the lid on and place in the oven, the shin will take at least 2.5hrs at a low heat (150 degrees celsius) to tenderise, but we cook ours for more like 4 or 5. 5. Towards the end of cooking, add the beans and the peppers. If you’re being fancy, you might like to char your peppers over a high, dry heat and add in, just throw them in if not! 6. Adjust seasoning to taste (we’re not averse to using a little brown sugar or dark chocolate should the mood take you), the meat will literally fall apart, so be careful not ‘overstir’ before serving (with a cold beer!).

Easter is on its way and that means plenty of chocolates to tempt you…. and your dog.

intravenous fluids, stomach protectant drugs and a stay in hospital may be necessary to help your dog stand the best chance of recovery.

Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine which are both poisonous to dogs. Dark/cooking chocolate is the most dangerous but milk and even white chocolate can still cause illness. Clinical symptoms range from mild stomach upset to death - depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten.

But it’s not just dogs that are at risk this time of year. Mother’s day often means fresh flowers in the house and one flower to be particularly careful of is lilies. All true lilies are toxic to cats if any part of the flower or pollen is ingested it can lead to fatal kidney failure. Often the first sign of lily poisoning is inappetence and vomiting, but if you are suspicious that your cat has come into contact with lilies then contact your vet immediately, even if there are currently no symptoms. Again the faster action is taken the better the chance of recovery.

If you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate call your vet immediately – the faster action is taken the better. Your vet will give an injection to make your dog vomit to get the chocolate out of his system. Depending on the specific situation

If you’re thinking about care, talk to an expert.

At Chiltern Grange Care Home we understand what families are faced with when considering care for a loved one. What type of care do they need? Will they be well looked after? Will they get a nutritious diet? Will there be enough activities for them? And most important of all, will they be happy? When you call us you will be talking to a real care expert, not just a call handler. Our care managers are regarded as amongst the best in the country – one of them was recently named Best Care Manager in the 2014 National Care Awards. Whether you’re thinking about residential, nursing, dementia care or respite care we can give you the expert advice you need to give you peace of mind and to help you make the right decision. So just call our home manager, Georgina Watts on 01494 480292. She’ll be happy to talk. Chiltern Grange Care Home Ibstone Road, Stokenchurch HP14 3GG (Sat Navs: HP14 3XR)

Stokenchurch Medical Centre Dementia-Friendly Communities Dementia-Friendly Communities are places where people with dementia and memory impairments are supported and feel empowered to ‘live well’ with their condition. Dementia and memory impairments affect a person’s ability to continue doing the things most of us take for granted such as shopping, banking, eating out in restaurants, driving and socialising. However, with a little help and support, people living with these conditions can remain independent, active members of their communities for longer. Dementia-Friendly Communities will only be achieved by people joining together, raising awareness and understanding and making simple but effective changes that benefit everyone. One in three people over the age of 65 will develop dementia in the UK so more and more of us will come to know someone who has the condition. Dementia-Friendly Communities was launched in Stokenchurch on 29th January 2015 at Stokenchurch Memorial Hall. Local residents and those that work in the area were invited to drop in to find out more and speak with those who have already pledged their support.

There are a number of simple things we can all do to help:

• If someone appears lost or confused when out and about – ask if they need help and offer reassurance. • If someone appears upset or distressed - take some time to listen. • Spend more time visiting and getting to know your neighbours. • Encourage your family, friends and work colleagues to become more aware. An alliance has been formed to bring together local people who want to help make Stokenchurch a Dementia-Friendly Community. If you would like more information or to find out how to be a part of your local alliance, then please call 01296 387821 or e-mail dfcommunities@buckscc.gov.uk

• If someone is struggling with paying for their shopping at the checkout – be patient and offer help.
