Editors’ Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View. We do hope you like our front cover picture this month and that by the time you read this the Lilac trees will be in full bloom. As I write this the rain has finally stopped, the ground is drying out slowly, the sun is shining and we hope that all the people who had such awful flooding are now able to dry everything out, and hopefully, look forward to summer. This issue of Chiltern View is packed with local events, bringing communities together during the summer months. We are helping to promote Radnage School Fete, Ibstone Fete , Stokenchurch Fete ,‘Run the Rock’, Charity Polo, Cadmore End School Fete and many other events in our community section, we do hope they all have good weather! Until next time……

Water, water, everywhere. By Pippa Greenwood A water-feature adds magic to any garden. The sound of tinkling water and the movement of light on its surface can be just the finishing touch you need either for a patio or for a much larger garden. There’s a plentiful choice of water-features of all shapes, styles, and sizes; but before you commit yourself, what are the main points to bear in mind? plants such as waterlilies not only look gorgeous but their leaves also shade the water – again, reducing algae. Waterlilies need still water, so are best avoided if you have a fountain; but a single spitting feature at one end of the pool shouldn’t create too much turbulence.

A water-feature adds magic to any garden. The sound of tinkling water and the movement of light on its surface can be just the finishing touch you need either for a patio or for a much larger garden. There’s a plentiful choice of water-features of all shapes, styles, and sizes; but before you commit yourself, what are the main points to bear in mind? First, position. For moving water, your feature will use an electric pump, so there has to be a power-point nearby – something often overlooked. Do you want an eye-catching centrepiece for a formal garden, or just the music of running water as the soundtrack to your alfresco Sunday lunch? In either case, you need to consider carefully the appropriate position. Water-features can turn bright green in summer due to the build-up of algae. You can go a long way towards preventing this by positioning them away from direct sunlight. Make sure they’re well away from deciduous trees, too, as falling leaves will clog everything up. For smaller spaces you’re best off with a selfcontained feature. There are lots of lovely ones available such as terracotta or glazed pot stacks with the water continuously pumped from one container to another, so you’ll only need to top it up in the hottest weather. Spouts and fountains are great fun. A spitting fish, frog, or gargoyle adds a touch of art – or humour – while oxygenating a pool, reducing algae and keeping the pond-life happy. If you want moving water but perhaps have toddlers, a millstone with a low, centrally-positioned jet is both beautiful and safe.

Plants around the edges of a pools and ponds are called marginals and do best in shallower water or boggy ground. Use plenty: they look gorgeous, they hide the liner and they’re a haven for wildlife. Marginals to consider include yellow-flowered marsh marigold (caltha palustris); white-flowered bog arum (calla palustris); miniature reed-mace (typha minima); pale blue water forget-me-not (myosotis scorpioides); and purple-bloomed water and bog iris (eg iris laevigata). You’ll need about two plants per metre. For a more formal look choose shapely rushes or ferns. Water-features attract wildlife, and in summer you might be visited by dragonflies or mayflies. Birds may also come to drink and bathe. And even a small pond needs a safe exit-route in case hedgehogs pop by for a drink and tumbles in. A shallow beach of pebbles should do the trick. If your feature has a sizeable surface, net it in the autumn to catch falling leaves. Garden netting stretched taut is ideal. Remove it as necessary to tip off the leaves. Left in the water they’ll both clog the pumps and produce methane, which is toxic. In winter, don’t let the water-feature freeze up. If extreme cold is forecast smaller features are best emptied, and the pump cleaned and stored in the shed. Travelling with your pets this Summer

If you’re thinking about taking your dogs or cats away with you on holiday this summer, recent legislation changes mean it has never been easier to do so. Travel with your dog or cat comes under the Pet Travel Scheme which covers countries within the EU and other “listed” countries. They have strict criteria which must be adhered to make sure quarantine is avoided. In order to travel to the EU or a “listed” country the following is required: • Your pet must be microchipped • Your pet must have a valid rabies vaccination • Your pet must have a valid pet passport If all of the above are in place, your pet is eligible for travel 21 days after the rabies vaccination.

When returning to the UK, dogs must be treated for tapeworm and this must be done by a veterinarian 1-5 days before re-entry in to the UK. It is also important to make sure your pet is protected against ectoparasites such as sand flies, as these carry Leishmaniasis, an endemic disease in many parts of Europe, which is difficult to treat. If your pet is a nervous traveller, there are anti-anxiety products available such as Feliway and Adaptil which are feline and canine pheromone-based products. Zylkene – a milk-protein extract – can also be used to aid relaxation during travel. Please ask your local practice if you need any advice before travelling, to ensure your pets get to enjoy their holiday to.

Staying Physically Active

An article from Stokenchurch Medical Centre It’s free, it’s easy to take and has immediate effect – and you don’t even need to go to your G.P to get some ! Yes – it’s exercise! Currently, 40 % of men and 28% of women do NOT meet the Chief Medical officers recommended levels of exercise to stay healthy. There is a wealth of evidence supporting the effects of exercise in reducing the risks of long term conditions such as type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers. Exercise can also boost your mood, reducing the likelihood of depressive illness, improving sleep and reducing your risk of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. It can also improve balance and coordination, and muscle tone in older people, reducing the risk of falls, fractures and arthritis.

Are you doing enough ? The amount of exercise you need depends upon your age. Adults 19 - 65+ years should do : at least 150 minutes ( 2 ½ hours) of moderate intensity aerobic activity each week plus 2 or more hours of muscle strengthening activities each week. It is best to try and spread the exercise out over several days , 20mins each day or 30 mins over 5 days. Moderate intensity activities include fast walking (to make you out of breath) , water aerobics, level cycling, pushing a non powered mower, volley ball, doubles tennis, vigorous dancing.

Helpful Hints • Try and find exercise that you enjoy as you are more likely to stick with it! • Build exercise into your daily routine- just like brushing your teeth! • Try and engage your family and friends to do the exercise with you • Support from your Medical Centre is advisable if you have not exercised for a while or have recently had an illness, are disabled or have a chronic condition such as asthma , high blood pressure or diabetes. • Your Medical Centre can offer access to free classes or sport facilities for qualifying patients • Visit Stokenchurch Medical Centre to see what classes and activities are available locally in the Stokenchurch area (ask for the information sheet in reception) Helpful Exercise tools and ideas can be obtained at www.nhs.uk/live well

Muscle strengthening activities include weight lifting, use of resistance bands, circuit training, heavy gardening such as digging, yoga, cycling up hills.

Plant of the Month – Iris The beautiful Iris plant takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow because whatever colour you can think of you’re sure to find an Iris to match. A relatively easy plant to grow and nurture, the Iris is fairly drought-tolerant and will delight gardeners with a mass of large flowers in the spring and even again in the autumn if conditions have been right. Add a spot of compost PAGE 34

to the soil if it is sandy or clay and make sure you don’t plant them too closely - these plants multiply rapidly and will grow from between one and three feet tall. Divide clumps after flowering every three years or so. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Where There’s a Will… Whether you are old or young, married or single, rich or poor, you really ought to make a will! If you don’t, the only way to divide up your property after death will be according to the Law of Intestacy – and the result may not be to your liking! For example, if you are married, your other half may not automatically get everything. Brothers, sisters, parents and children may also inherit. And if you are an unmarried couple, you could be classed as a single person and your surviving partner could receive nothing.

If a parent, consider who you would like to look after your children in the event of your death. For single parents or unmarried parents living together, a valid will that nominates guardians is invaluable. If no one knows your wishes, the court will decide on the future care of your children. A will gives single people the chance to have their estate divided amongst friends, relatives or charities, and even if you have made a will already it is a good idea to review and possibly update it, to ensure that it reflects your current wishes. Making a will is the one PAGE 36

and only way to make sure your wishes are carried out after your death. There are several choices available when making a will. The ‘Do It Yourself’ option can be completed with the aid of a ‘Will Pack’ available from stationery shops or online. Though relatively cheap, this option offers no advice, so the will may not accurately reflect your wishes and best fit your circumstances. Professional bodies such as banks and solicitors offer will writing services. Typically, a representative will take down your instructions and draft a will accordingly. The skill and qualifications of individuals may vary, so check they are properly trained. Finally, you could use a professional will writer. Most firms send a specially trained person to your home to record your instructions. Your will is then drafted by someone qualified in will writing. Will writing firms are generally covered by professional indemnity insurance, and are members of a professional will writing body such as the Institute of Professional Will Writers. The cost to make a will depends on the complexity of your requirements. A simple single or mirrored will typically cost around £150 to £200, whereas more complex wills may be between £400 and £800. The original signed copy is the only legally binding version and if it gets lost, stolen or damaged it will be worthless- so keep it in a safe place! Tell your friends and family that you’ve made a will - but not necessarily what’s in it – and let them know how to find it. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Local Molly Maid Crowned Newcomer Of The Year MOLLY MAID, the UK’s leading professional domestic cleaning company, has just returned from their National Convention entitled “The Winning Formula” following an inspirational three days where Janine Symondson, from MOLLY MAID Thame, truly shone. This year, MOLLY MAID turned The Coombe Abbey Hotel, Binley, Warwickshire, with its impressive setting, into its home for three days. The Convention was concluded with a MOLLY MAID star-studded Gala dinner and awards ceremony where Janine Symondson, who runs MOLLY MAID Thame, was awarded the prestigious title of Newcomer of the Year Award 2013. A Good Read Bridget Jones - Mad about the Boy So Bridget is back. This time with kids and without husband not really a spoiler, unless you have been living under a rock for the last year. Mark Darcy is dead, and our heroine is left to ‘keep buggering on’ in her own inimitable fashion. Most of the headlines as the book was published last year, focused on Darcy’s demise and on the fact that Bridget has found a toyboy. It is the first of these points that sets the tone of the book, which opens four years after the event, tempering the typical comic misunderstandings that result from a return to the dating scene with a resounding sense of the intense sadness of widowhood. Mark Darcy is a constant presence, either in Bridget’s own reminiscences or in the careful efforts of others to avoid mentioning him. The format is the same as the previous two volumes, (surely there is no-one left in the country who hasn’t read them?). Bridget still counts the calories and has added an obsession with collecting Twitter followers. Some of the old faces are still there too. Jude and Tom continue to provide advice and alcohol, whilst Daniel Cleaver is a not-quitereformed godfather to Billy and Mabel. And Bridget’s mum may have retired, but is far from retiring... PAGE 46

Of course, the plot twists may be obvious from the outset, but as ever, the fact that we genuinely care about the characters keeps us reading and keeps us involved. Some readers may never forgive Helen Fielding for spoiling our illusions that Bridget and Mark Darcy would live happily ever after, but others will find this both amusing, moving and, at times, uplifting. Maps - Aleksandra Mizielinska and Daniel Mizielinski Every home should have a good atlas - for a child there is little better than travelling the world by turning the pages. ‘Maps’ is not exactly an atlas, but for any child wanting to embark on their own adventure of the imagination, it is an absolute must have. For a start it is a big book – in A3 format, almost designed for lying on the floor and gazing at. Each page covers a country, with beautiful illustrations of key cities, wildlife, landmarks and peoples. Two children from that country feature, and there are facts about languages and population. Quite simply, you could stare at each page for hours. William Morris famously said that you should have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. This book is both. Buy it. By Kath Bennett To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Monthly Focus – May Day Celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere, this is a spring festival and usually has a days holiday associated with it. It is one of the old pagan holidays that lost its religious character whilst becoming merged with more popular celebrations in Europe. May Day has traditionally been associated with towns and villages celebrating springtime fertility and activities enjoyed include Morris dancing, maypole dancing and the crowning of a May Queen. Flowers play an important part during these celebrations given their association with spring and renewal. PAGE 50

In other continents May Day also coincides with International Workers’ Day. In Australian Northern Territories and 80 other countries, this is a public holiday in recognition of the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. For May Day celebration ideas visit: http://www.wikihow.com/Celebrate-May-Day

Famous People of the Chilterns: Charles de Gaulle 1890 - 1970

Charles de Gaulle began his career as a professional officer in the French army, and distinguished himself in the First World War. In 1940, when France surrendered to Germany during WW2, de Gaulle and other French officers escaped to England. He arrived with barely a hundred French francs, thrust into his hand by a colleague as he boarded his plane. On his arrival, Winston Churchill famously invited him to broadcast to the French people on the BBC, calling for resistance against Nazi occupation. Armed with an unflinching belief in his country and his own destiny (he frequently referred to himself in the third person) de Gaulle set about forming the Free French movement, claiming sovereignty over France.

the leader of the Free French worshipped regularly at Berkhamsted’s Roman Catholic church in Park View Road, now no longer a church. On Remembrance Sunday in November 1941, de Gaulle was persuaded to take the salute at the marchpast of the local Home Guard in the nearby village of Potten End, an unlikely event recorded in photographs. Immediately after the war he presided over the interim French Government and was president of France from 1959-69. His wartime Chilterns neighbours could have had no idea that the man in their midst was destined to become the most influential ruler of France in its modern history. They would be even less likely to guess that he is the only one-time Chilterns resident to have an international airport named after him! The Ashridge Estate is owned by the National Trust now and is a great place to visit for a walk, bike ride or picnic with lots of woodland trails and viewpoints. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop.

For this he was accused of treason and given a death sentence by the official Vichy-France government. In 1941 de Gaulle and his family moved into Rodinghead, a house in the Ashridge Estate area near Berkhamsted. The beautiful surroundings of the Chilterns countryside would have provided some tranquillity from the rigours of being a wartime leader in exile. As a devout Catholic, PAGE 54

Charles de Gaulle was one of France’s most powerful presidents of the 20th century. During the Second World War he had to flee France and found refuge in the Chilterns.

Messing About on the River If you are looking for something a little different this year, why not try a canal boat holiday. You do not need any previous experience or a boat licence to hire a canal boat, and you and your crew will be given all the training you need before you set off on your holiday. You will be taught how to use the controls which are fairly simple: the tiller controls left and right, and you push the lever forwards to go forward and backwards to stop or reverse. Life jackets are supplied to children and non swimmers for extra safety. You can go to many different parts of the UK and choose your own itinerary. You can choose to moor up near a quiet canal side village or in a city centre. Birmingham for instance is famous for having more canals than Venice. It’s a good idea to look at maps and guides in advance, and talk to your hire company to plan a realistic route. Remember that the pace is slow. The speed limit on canals is just four miles an hour. Kids or grandparents will love helping at the locks, and as you will be in a different place every day, you can find something to suit everyone along the way. This type of holiday is also ideal for dogs as there will be plenty of open spaces and traffic-free walking. You will gain a new love of nature as you spot birds and wildlife along the way. You might also choose to do some fishing from the boat or the banks, but do remember you may need to buy a rod licence. There will also be many other highly decorated craft to see along the way. It’s great fun waving to those on the tow

PAGE 68

path, and some of your party might choose to cycle on the paths or walk parts of the route whilst you steer. Today’s holiday boats are bright and modern and all the comforts of home are available. The Galley is fully equipped with oven, hob and fridge and in some cases a micro wave. You will find all the utensils, crockery and glasses that you need on board. Lounges are fitted with comfortable seating, and some have DVD’s as well as TV’s. Bathrooms have hot and cold running water to the showers and sinks and a flushing loo!. There is usually a mix of single and double beds and often central heating. If you are really looking for complete rest and relaxation, why not try one of the canal hotels that can also be found on the water. You get your own skipper and crew, who know the history of the canals, and you can share the trip with like-minded people. It’s the perfect way to unwind. By Susan Brookes-Morris
