Editors’ Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View (Villages), once again packed with local advertisers and local information. We do hope you like the Owl on our front cover. These wonderful birds need all the support that we can give them and we are pleased to be able to promote this cause with an article from BBOWT on Page 28. Why not visit their website and learn even more. The front cover photograph is by Andrew Mason. I think that we all look forward to May and June. The gardens are starting to spring into life, the sun has more than a hint of warmth in it and we start to plan spring and summer excursions. Why not have a look at our article on P12 about Mary Shelley and then take a sunny stroll around Marlow ( Marlow Society town walk – www.marlowsociety.org.uk) to find the blue plaque. Follow this with refreshments in one of Marlows’ many coffee shops for a perfect, local day out. Until next time…

Many gardeners can’t resist the romance of lavender - blowing gently in the breeze or cut stems in vases make for a pretty picture. Lavenders will tolerate many growing conditions and thrives well in warm, well-drained soil and if you can encourage a chalky soil you’ll enhance the scent of PAGE 8

Famous People of the Chilterns: THE SHELLEYS

One of the most famous literary couples of the nineteenth century lived for a time in Marlow. Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley had a short and eventful marriage but during this time they both produced some well-loved and enduring work. The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, best known for poems like Ozymandias and To a Skylark, went to Oxford University, from which he was expelled for an atheist publication. The 19 year old Shelley eloped with 16 year old Harriet Westbrook, with whom he had a daughter. In 1814 he left her and ran off to Italy with Mary Godwin, daughter of the political philosopher William Godwin and the ground-breaking feminist and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft. Percy and Mary rented a house next door to Byron on the shores of Lake Geneva. After an evening discussing “the nature of the principle of life”, Mary passed a sleepless night imagining the horrors of ‘creating’ a living creature. Searching for the subject of a good story, she rejoiced: “I have found it! What terrified me will terrify others; and I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow.” In 1816, after their return to England, Harriet Westbrook drowned herself in the Serpentine and Percy and Mary promptly married. The couple came to Marlow, in Buckinghamshire, and set up home at Albion House in West Street. In this elegant setting beside the broad and placid Thames, Mary completed Frankenstein, recapturing the horrors conceived amongst the rugged backdrop of the Alps. Whilst in Marlow she also edited their continental journal

published as A History of a Six Weeks Tour. Percy, meanwhile, was working on The Revolt of Islam and revolutionary Mary Shelley tracts written under the name of ‘The Hermit of Marlowe’. In 1818 the Shelleys moved to Italy and in 1822 Percy was drowned while sailing, in a sudden storm. Mary returned to London to devote herself to compiling and publishing her husband’s work. Albion House, now named Shelley Cottages, is a private house but is marked by a plaque. It is included in the Marlow Society’s Marlow Town Walk: www.marlowsociety.org.uk This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Crossroads Veterinary Centre

Summer is here and it’s time to start thinking about holidays! However this doesn’t necessarily mean your pet has to be left at home. The PETS travel scheme makes it easy for your dog (or cat) to come along on vacation with you - so long as they meet certain criteria. Your pet will need to be issued a passport, a microchip and a rabies vaccination. He will then need to wait 21 days until he can travel, so make sure you leave yourself plenty of time. In order to re-enter the UK at the end of the holiday your dog will need to see a vet to have a tapeworm tablet administered. Although not a legal requirement, it is recommended that your pet is up to date with his annual vaccinations as well as his flea and tick

CROSSROADS

treatments to protect him from catching exotic diseases. Extra protection against diseases that are not within the UK may also be required, for example leishmania and heartworm. Speak to your vet for advice. If you are travelling outside of the EU the process of preparing your pet can take longer and a blood test after the rabies vaccination may be required. A health certificate may be required and a vet may need to certify that your animal is fit to travel. If you are thinking of taking your pet abroad talk to your vet as soon as possible to ensure you leave yourself enough time to prepare your pet for travel.

The Wildlife Trust

Kate Titford from Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) is on a ghostly trail. A silent, ghostly-white shape glides past me a few yards above ground level. It’s dusk and I’m standing near a hedgerow overlooking a field of tussocky grass in a Chilterns valley. The bird that’s just flown by is a barn owl, that much-loved and iconic, farmland bird. But this is a rare sighting. Barn owls feed on small mammals, particularly short-tailed field voles that live in rough grass; the sort of tussocky habitats that you find around the edge of fields or next to hedgerows. Over the last 60 years we have lost 97% of lowland grassland and 50% of hedgerows in the UK, which means fewer places for barn owls to hunt for their prey. ‘Tidier’ farms mean fewer small mammals for the owls to hunt. Efficient combine harvesters drop less grain for voles and shrews to eat, and rodenticides prevent small mammals from living in farm buildings. Barn owls have also found themselves homeless. They traditionally nested in holes in trees or inside farm buildings. But old trees have been cut down or lost to disease and many barns converted into modern homes with no space for a nest.

Barn owls feathers are not waterproof like other birds. This makes them vulnerable to wet and cold weather because they’re unable to hunt for prey, and fewer survive to breed in spring. Wet summers also mean poor hunting conditions, just when barn owls need plenty of small mammals to raise their young. As a result of all that the number of barn owls in the UK fell dramatically during the last century. The situation sounds grim, but it isn’t all bad news. We still have barn owls in the Chilterns, and we’d like to see more of them. They need grassy fields with hedgerows to hunt over, and more places where they can breed to give them the best chance of survival. The Wildlife Trust is putting up nest boxes in reserves where there is good grassland and therefore plenty of food. Look out for the large, triangular or sometimes rectangular boxes on lone trees or the end walls of barns. Because barn owls usually hunt at dusk and in the early morning you may be lucky to see one, though you can hear their eerie screech from their nightly roost in a tree. Look on the ground below the roost where you’ll find pellets of regurgitated indigestible parts of their prey. Carefully opening up an owl pellet reveals their latest meals; beaks of small birds, a shoulder blade of a vole, or fur from a mouse. Visit www.bbowt.org.uk to discover more about barn owls, including videos and how to dissect an owl pellet.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Midge, I’m a 3 year old Patterdale Terrier Mix. I am an active & intelligent little boy who will need a home where people have experience of Patterdales or Terriers. I do need some further training but I love treats so I will pick things up quickly. I like to use my brain so will need to be kept occupied.

a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

I would benefit from at least 2 hours exercise a day and would love a good sized garden so that I can play until I learn a recall!! I may be able to live with another dog & maybe even a cat. I would like any children in my new home to be aged 11 years and over. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs

Stokenchurch Medical Centre Norovirus A common viral infection reported to GP Practice is the vomiting bug norovirus, which is difficult to treat. Noroviruses are a group of viruses that can cause infection of the gut, and are types of germs smaller than bacteria. Gastroenteritis usually causes symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea. This is easily spread from an infected person to another by close contact. This is usually because the virus is present on the infected person’s hands after they have been to the toilet. Surfaces or objects touched by the infected person can also allow transmission of the virus. The virus can be passed on if the infected person prepares food or if water is contaminated with norovirus. Outbreaks of norovirus that affect many people can occur. For example; in hospitals, on cruise ships and in schools. It usually takes 24-48 hours after first contact with norovirus before symptoms start and can occur in anyone of any age. You can get a norovirus infection more than once. Feeling sick (nausea) is usually the first symptom. This is followed by diarrhoea which tends to be watery. You may also start being sick around the same time. Sometimes there are other symptoms such as: • A high temperature (fever). • A headache. • Aching muscles in your arms and legs. The symptoms tend to be relatively mild and short-lived, often only lasting one to two days. However, in a few people symptoms can last longer. If symptoms are severe, lack of fluid in the body (dehydration) can occur. You should consult a doctor if you suspect that you or your child/children are becoming dehydrated.

PAGE 34

Mild dehydration is common and is usually easily reversed by drinking lots of fluids. Severe dehydration will require hospital admission for fluids to be given by a “drip”. Symptoms of dehydration in babies, children and old people should be taken very seriously and include: • Passing little urine. • A dry mouth; a dry tongue and lips. • Fewer tears when crying. • Sunken eyes. • Weakness. • Being irritable or lacking in energy (lethargic). • Drowsiness. • Pale or mottled (blotchy) skin. • Cold hands or feet. • Very few wet nappies. • Fast (but often shallow) breathing. If in doubt please make contact with your local GP Practice or Medical Centre, or call NHS 111.

Bank Holidays Many of us will rejoice at the thought of two bank holidays during May. UK bank holidays have been in existence since the 1871 Bank Holidays Act when initially four specific days were created as days off. There have been additions over the years including New Years Day in 1974 and the first Monday in May in 1978. An extra bank holiday was created as a one off event in 2011 for the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on 29th April, and in 2012 for the Queens Diamond Jubilee on 5th June. Bank holidays can be declared by statute or Royal proclamation, the latter is also commonly used to move those holidays that would otherwise fall on a weekend to a week day. There is no automatic right to time off on these days but many employers do pay staff to take the day off or if they PAGE 46

work they pay them additional wages. There are frequent campaigns for further bank holidays to be added, commonly in relation to the main Saints days, St David’s, St Patrick’s, St Andrew’s and St George’s for example. Bank Holidays are now frequently chosen as dates for special events and many will choose to book holiday for the full week that includes a bank holiday in order to spend time with family and friends. Book Reviews A Good Read The Poison Tree by Erin Kelly Finding your way in the world after leaving school can be daunting, and for Karen this is no different. A language student at a college in London she has a chance encounter with Biba, an exotic and bohemian student, and Karen’s life will never be the same again. Biba lives with her brother Rex in a crumbling gothic style townhouse in London, with a lifestyle that could not be further from the suburban humdrum that Karen grew up in. She is drawn to these two siblings and so begins a summer of freedom, cheap wine, experimental drugs and sexual adventures. The lure of Biba’s personality is tremendous and Karen clearly aspires to be like her. Then, one day, their idyllic summer comes crashing to a halt. Karen learns the truth of Biba and Rex’s family life and an unexpected visitor leads to tragedy. A more mature Karen looks back on the events of that summer ten years later as she comes to terms with her role in everything. As a reader, you know from the start that something is going to happen. Like a car crash in slow motion you can see it coming as Karen absorbs more and more of Biba’s exotic nature. Yet, when the author brings things to a climax you are thrown, dazed and shocked, along with Karen, PAGE 54

in a debut novel that will stay with you long after you close it for the final time.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner Post-apocalyptic and dystopian literature seems to be all the rage in the Young Adult fiction market these days. Hot on the heels of the successful Hunger Games and Divergent trilogies comes The Maze Runner. Initially published in 2009 it came to prominence with the release of the film adaptation in 2014. Thomas is a teenager who awakes to find himself in a box in a place called the Glade. He has no memory of who he is or how he came to be here, but he is thrown into this new community, and as a reader so are you. Before long you become familiar with the terminology used by the boys and you feel as if you are a Glader along with them. As Thomas adjusts to his new home he learns about the Maze which surrounds the Glade. Each day the walls open and a select group of runners spend daylight hours exploring and mapping it. It is a race against the clock because at sunset the Grievers – giant robotic creatures – enter the Maze and they are deadly. The walls close to protect the community and overnight the structure of the Maze changers, leaving the runners to start again in the morning. The big mystery is why. Why are Thomas and the other boys there and why do the Grievers come out to get them? Why do the walls in the Maze change and will the runners ever solve it. However, more importantly why has a girl been sent to the Glade and why has all communication with the outside world suddenly stopped? By Willow Coby

Chelsea Flower Show 19th – 23rd May The Chelsea Flower Show is to gardening what the Paris catwalks are to fashion. Paris fashions may seem outlandish, but they push certain trends, which in a watered-down version end up in high-street shops. Likewise, though many of Chelsea’s show gardens are fantasy pieces which demonstrate outrageous ideas, the horticultural trends on display will find their way into our own more modest plots. For example; did you know that bonsai specimens and topiary gardens were introduced at Chelsea in 1913? Rock gardens were introduced in the 1940’s and decking in the eighties. All of these can now be bought in garden centres up and down the land. In 2006 James Dyson even produced a water feature in which the water ran uphill. Actually I’m still waiting for my garden centre to stock one of those! Maybe one day... Chelsea isn’t just about high fashion though; it reflects environmental trends too. In recent years there have been hosepipe bans in the great Pavillion and many of the gardens have showcased drought-tolerant planting schemes. Chelsea draws over 150 000 visitors each year. For the past ten years it’s been held over five days instead of four, such is its popularity.

Chelsea really is window-shopping at its finest. It’s like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world. And if you visit on the last day you don’t have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely a bell rings and the great Chelsea sell-off begins. The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It’s perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize winning garden. So what should you choose? If it were me I’d want something special; a reminder of my visit. I’d go for a species which I know would grow in my garden, but an unusual variety, not available in my local garden centre. In my case it would probably be an unusual lavender or fuchsia. Choose carefully and you could have a little piece of Chelsea gold adorning your plot for many years to come. By Rachel Leverton

The sheer quantity and varieties of plants on display to the general public is breathtaking. PAGE 60
