Editors’ Letter Welcome to the November/December issue of Chiltern View (Villages). It is always a challenge to write this editorial in the middle of October, with Christmas on the distant horizon, but we also have a busy Autumn ahead and important dates such as Remembrance Sunday (Sunday 8th November) and Bonfire Night. We do our very best here at Chiltern View to share any information about seasonal local events and we hope you will find what you are looking for in our Community pages of the magazine. If you have an event to share but have left it too late to be included in the magazine then just send it on an email to villageview@live.co.uk or give us a call on 07712816336 and we will do our best to spread to word via social media. We have a very active Facebook page and many Twitter followers so why not ‘like’ us and ‘follow’ us for up to date community information. As we approach our 10th Birthday at Chiltern View Villages (January issue) we would like to wish all of our readers and advertisers a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy 2016. Once again we will not be sending Christmas cards but this year we will be making a donation to Lane End Support Group - an amazing local organisation which supports parents and carers of children with special needs and disabilities. Until next time….

Wycombe Swan
Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to Wycombe Swan from Tuesday 1st Saturday 5th December Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971 – stunning audiences and changing the face of musical theatre forever. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through an extraordinary, groundbreaking score. As compelling today as it was at its inception over 40 years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs from I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar. Leading performer Glenn Carter returns as Jesus, a role he has played in the West End, on Broadway and on film. Musical theatre star Tim Rogers, whose theatre credits include Carousel, Whistle Down the Wind and the title role in Jekyll & Hyde at the Union Theatre plays Judas Iscariot, while X Factor finalist Rachel Adedeji stars as Mary Magdalene direct from the UK and European tour of Thriller Live. Produced by Bill Kenwright and the creative team behind numerous blockbuster musicals, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the world’s oldest story with the superb theatricality they have PAGE 8

Drinking Responsibly As we head towards the festive season there’s a renewed emphasis on the dangers of drink driving. In England and Wales, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath or 107 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of urine. The punishment for being over the legal alcohol limit when driving is a ban for at least 12 months, and a fine of up to £5,000. Offenders may also be given between three and eleven penalty points. There is also a possibility of imprisonment for up to six months. Those caught drink driving more than once in a 10 year period; will get a driving ban of at least three years. It’s not easy to ensure you remain under the limit if PAGE 12
you drink alcohol as a variety of factors such as, weight and metabolism can influence results. Even small amounts of alcohol can influence driving, reactions may be slower, vision blurred and it can be more difficult to process information for example. All of these put you at risk. The advice for avoiding drink driving includes using designated drivers who drink soft drinks or zero alcohol varieties only. Choose nights out that don’t include drinking and use public transport or taxis. By Susan Brookes-Morris www.chilterndirectories.co.uk

CHRISTMAS MARKET FUN the many wonderful places to visit and enjoy all the local traditions of Christmas.
As we fast approach the Christmas season thoughts turn to festivities and presentbuying. What better way to get into the holiday season than visiting one of the many Christmas Markets to be found across Europe. Take a short break to many European cities – Vienna, Salzburg, Bruges, Prague, Lille, Cologne, Brussels, Berlin, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Budapest, Munich, Berlin and Tallin – just a sample of
traditional fayre between 15 November and 4 January. Another favourite is Budapest – their Christmas market takes place in the main shopping street Vaci Utca and Heroes Square and features traditional Hungarian dancing and folk music, carol singing and stalls selling local specialities including hot sausages and warm gluhwein. (open 27 November to 31 December)
At all of these wonderful places you can enjoy the huge expanse of Christmas stalls in market squares selling their wares – whether that be local dining specialities like stollen cake with hot gluhwein, bratwirst, waffles and wine or the fantastic array of local hand-made gifts from local craftsmen.
Many of the Christmas markets are available to visit for a short 2/3 day break – and there are a few that you can take in on a one day visit with flights and transfers included.
In Vienna, the market is open from 15 November until 23 December – famous for it’s amazing Christmas trees elaborately decorated with Christmas lights and trinkets to it’s festive music concerts at Schonbrunn Palace. Munich is a beautiful city which comes to life in the lead up to Christmas with it’s wonderful Christmas market in the Marienplatz from 27 November until 24 December.
If you would like to know more about holidays to any of the Christmas markets why not call our travel experts at Spear Travels – always ready to help.

Famous People of the Chilterns: AGATHA CHRISTIE
Agatha Christie, the world-famous author of 66 detective novels and the world’s longest-running play (The Mousetrap), lived for over 40 years in Wallingford. She grew up in Devon and married her first husband, Archibald Christie, in 1914. Agatha worked as a hospital nurse during the First World War and later in a hospital pharmacy, where she learnt much about poisons. After the war she began writing and publishing novels and raising her only child, a daughter called Rosalind. Her first marriage ended in 1928 and her interest in history led her to meet her second husband, the distinguished archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan. The Queen of Crime and her new husband settled into Winterbrook House in Cholsey near Wallingford in 1934, attracted by the dignified beauty of this Oxfordshire Thames-side town. Their home here provided them with great contentment in a busy and eventful life. It was their main residence for the rest of their lives and Agatha did most of her writing in it. It is here that many of her elaborate plots involving Hercules Poirot, Jane Marple, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford and others came into being. She often accompanied her distinguished husband on Middle Eastern excavations which provided material for some of the 80 books and plays which made her the best selling author of all time. Though she generally kept a low profile in Wallingford, she became president of the amateur dramatic group, the Sinodun Players. Appropriately, the 19th century Corn Exchange Theatre, which is the Players’ home, now St Mary’s Church, Cholsey

features as Causton Theatre in ITV’s Midsomer Murders. Wallingford itself has become a magnet Agatha for fans who come Christie from far and wide to 1925 visit the picture postcard Chiltern towns and villages that are a hallmark of the series. Dame Agatha Christie died at Winterbrook House in January 1976. She is buried in an impressive grave in the churchyard of St Mary’s, at nearby Cholsey, under her married name of Mallowan. In 2010 a Blue Plaque was unveiled on Winterbrook House, still a private home. The exterior of Winterbrook House, and Agatha Christie’s grave, can both be seen on a walk from Wallingford following the Dame Agatha Christie Trail – you can download the leaflet at www.wallingford.co.uk. Explore Wallingford’s Midsomer links on www.visitmidsomer.com. This is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £2.99 from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Remembrance Day Following the end of the First World War, my grandfather travelled to France and spent several months burying the dead. This experience affected him forever. The Great War started in 1914, and after four years of bitter fighting the guns of Europe finally fell silent at 11am on 11th November 1918 – six hours after the armistice was signed in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiegne, France. The following year, King George V sent out a proclamation requesting that a 2 minute silence be held, so “the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead”. Since that first Armistice Day in 1919, a two minute
silence has been observed yearly at war memorials and other public places at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, and on the second Sunday of November. After the end of the Second World War, Armistice Day became known as Remembrance Day, to include those who had fallen in WWII and other conflicts. Twelve thousand British servicemen and women have been killed or injured since 1945. In the words of the poet Robert Binyon: “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.” By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Plant of the Month Japonica A hardy plant enjoying full sun and partial shade, this winter-flowering shrub provides a bold and colourful backdrop to many garden borders. With its richly coloured leaves that grow up to 40cm long, this plant provides bright yellow blooms by spring which smell like Lily of the Valley. The shrub is closely related to berberis but can be defined by its larger, bolder leaves which are glossy and evergreen. This shrub makes an ideal choice for a gardening beginner or one with little time as they are PAGE 30
slow growing and don’t need much further care. They tend to be left alone by pests too because of their glossy leaves. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk

Recipe - Perfect Parkin
A bonfire night treat
Serves 12 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes Ingredients 225g / 8oz Plain flour 2 level tsps Ground ginger 1 level tsp Bicarbonate of Soda ½ level tsp salt 225g /8oz Medium oatmeal 115g / 4oz Black treacle 115g / 4oz Golden syrup 115g / 4oz Soft light-brown sugar 115g /4 oz Unsalted butter 150ml / 5floz Milk 1 Egg - beaten Method Preheat the oven to 180C / Gas mk 4. Grease and line a 30 x 25 x 5 cm (12 x 10 x 2 inch) roasting tin with grease-proof paper. Place the treacle, golden syrup, sugar and butter into a heavy-bottomed saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Remove from the PAGE 32
heat. Allow to cool a little then beat in the milk and the egg. Sift the flour, ginger, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the oatmeal and make a well in the centre. Pour the liquid mixture into the well and beat thoroughly. Pour into the roasting tin and bake in the centre of the oven until firm and springy. Leave to cool in the tin. When cold wrap in greaseproof paper and leave for a couple of days in an airtight tin, because the flavour of Parkin improves with keeping. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Crossroads Veterinary Centre With the weather getting colder you might think that your pet is safe from fleas but unfortunately the central heating that keeps us warm also keeps the fleas thriving. Adult fleas live in the coat of your dog or cat – their bites can cause itching, allergic reactions, anaemia and can also transmit tapeworms. However the adult fleas only account for 5% of the flea population; the other 95% resides in the environment (in your carpets, wooden floors, furniture or garden) as flea eggs, larvae and pupae. This means that as well as treating your pet it is important to use a product that also controls the environmental parasite burden. The wildlife in your garden such as hedgehogs, rabbits and foxes can also carry fleas so your garden can be full of flea eggs just waiting to hatch onto your pet.
CROSSROADS
There are several flea treatments that can be bought from your vets that sterilise the fleas as well as killing them, meaning that all stages of the flea life cycle are taken care of. Regular vacuuming and washing pets bedding at 60°C helps reduce the number of eggs, pupae and larvae in the environment. There are also house hold spray products that can help if you have an infestation. Speak to your vets for advice to control fleas this winter. Remember, fleas can be passed between cats and dogs so it is important to treat all animals in the house.

A Good Read
Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R Tolkien Mention Tolkien and you will undoubtedly think of his epic adventures - The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. But as father to four children Tolkien had a softer more whimsical side. Each December over the course of their childhood he wrote and illustrated detailed letters from Father Christmas; letters populated by a cast of characters which included elves, goblins and a clumsy polar bear. Through these letters, Tolkien entertained his children with stories of high-jinks at the North Pole. It’s true the language can seem a little formal and stilted at times by today’s standards, but they were written in the 1920s and 30s and Tolkien is as much a product of his time as any author. His affection for his children shines through every page regardless. As they were written for real children the reader receives an insight into what the interests of the Tolkien children might have been: prehistoric cave paintings, fireworks, the night sky and animals to name a few. All the letters are lavishly illustrated with fantastical intricate pictures, and these bring the stories to life.
alone in front of a roaring fire with a cup of hot chocolate, or for sharing with your own children. Perfect seasonal fare.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss Long before Jim Carrey took the character to the big screen, this book had captured the hearts of generations of children.
It’s a marvellous story of seasonal redemption in the best tradition. It’s every bit as timeless as Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The lonely Grinch hates Christmas; the noise, the feasting, the singing. His loathing of the festivities is focussed on the merry little Whos, who really know how to throw a Christmas party. He decides that this year he will put a stop to the proceedings and sets about wrecking their big day. Will he succeed? Well it’s no secret to say that happily his plans are thwarted in the nicest way possible, as he discovers that the most important thing about Christmas is love, friendship and sense of belonging to a community. This is Seuss at his best; a riotous rhyming adventure and an adorably grumpy anti-hero. By Sarah Davey
Even non-Tolkien fans should love this charming book. It’s wonderful for reading PAGE 42

Protect yourself… Help us fight Flu in Stokenchurch and surrounding areas! It’s that time of year again when GP practices across the country turn their attention to the National Flu Campaign. At Stokenchurch Medical Centre we have been preparing for this for several weeks to ensure all of our eligible adults and children can receive the flu vaccination as soon as practicable. All those adults and children who are eligible will have received a letter inviting them to attend one of our flu clinics. This year we are doing things differently. We are holding 2 Saturday flu clinics on 10th October and 7th November between 9am and 1pm at Stokenchurch Medical Centre, when eligible patients can come for the vaccination without an appointment. There will be 4 GPs and 4 nurses carrying out the vaccinations and 2 reception staff to help with the administration. We are also visiting Old School Close, St Hugh’s and the day centre to vaccinate those eligible who live at or attend these places. Please note there will be NO flu clinics at the Medical Centre during the normal working week this year, so please ensure you attend one of the Saturday clinics. Please bring your letter with you as NO LETTER NO VACCINATION! The flu vaccine is given free every year to the following groups • Adults over the age of 18 at risk of flu (including everyone aged 65 and pregnant women) and children aged six months to two years at risk of flu. • We also vaccinate children with the nasal vaccine aged 2yrs to 17yrs who are at particular risk of flu, for example those with diabetes or asthma. PAGE 54
• In addition we are offering the nasal vaccine to all children aged 2yrs, 3yrs and 4yrs. Did you know…? • Flu vaccine is the best protection we have against an unpredictable virus that can cause unpleasant illness in children and severe illness (and sometimes death) among at-risk groups, including older people, pregnant women and those with an underlying medical condition. Find out more at: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/ pages/flu-influenza-vaccine.aspx or ask your GP or Practice Nurse. See you Saturday 10th October or Saturday 7th November 9am-1pm Remember NO LETTER NO VACCINATION! Stokenchurch Medical Centre.

Lucy’s Recipe Corner Little mincemeat puffs INGREDIENTS per person 200g puff pastry 100g icing sugar 1 star anise 2 cloves 200g mincemeat Handful of plain flour for rolling If you want something smaller than a mince pie these make a great alternative. Pop the star anise, cloves and icing sugar into a blender or grinder and blitz until the herbs are mixed in with the sugar. Get the oven on to 180°c/160°c fan
PAGE 58
Roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle 30cm x 20cm and spread out the mincemeat over the top. Take each of the longest sides and, one at a time, roll carefully into the middle. Put into the freezer for about 15 minutes until firm. Slice into 1cm thick slices, sprinkle with the spiced sugar and bake for 12-15 minutes.
