Editors’ Letter Welcome to the September/October issue of Chiltern View (Villages). Firstly we have an apology to make to any of you who usually tackle our Sudoku!! Despite proof reading many times before we go to print, somehow we managed to include the incorrect solution to the July/August puzzle in the magazine. Thank you to those of you who contacted us (at least we now know that someone out there is not only reading the magazine, but also tackling the puzzles.) If anyone would like the correct solution then please either call us on 07712816336 or send an email to salesvv@live.co.uk. We will do our best to get it right in this issue! We are delighted that, starting with this issue we will be running a new travel article (P 52), kindly supplied by Spear Travel in Thame. I am sure they will whet our appetites for warmer climes and adventure as we move towards winter. We also have an additional competition in this issue, for all our puzzle enthusiasts. Alongside the Cryptic Crossword on Page 8, we have a competition to win a book, written and kindly donated by Personal Crosswords to help unravel the mysteries of cryptic crosswords. Just email your entry to us at villageview@live.co.uk. With all our usual amazing local businesses and extensive Community information we hope that there is something for everyone in this issue.

Lucy’s Recipe Corner Yummy banana bread
INGREDIENTS 2 or 3 ripe, peeled bananas 1/3 cup of melted butter 1 beaten egg 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1 teaspoon of baking soda A pinch of salt 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour ½ a cup of sugar
salt, sugar, beaten egg and vanilla. Mix in the flour.
Get the oven on first so that it heats up to 350°F (175°C) and grease up or line a small oblong loaf tin.
Pour the mixture into your loaf tin and bake for around an hour. You can tell if it’s cooked by sliding a knife or skewer into the middle and if it comes out clean you’re done.
Mash up the bananas in a mixing bowl and stir in the butter once smooth. Mix in the baking soda, PAGE 12

Fifty Years of Flower Arranging at Four Ends Flower Club, Lane End Four Ends Flower Club has been meeting and arranging flowers since the halcyon days of the 1960’s. We have a healthy membership of 36+, and a monthly flower arranging competition for members. This competition is a sight to behold, with up to 12 flower arrangements by members, judged by our demonstrators. Points accrue each month until our AGM, when cups are awarded to members with the most points. This year, we have had visits to “Florimania” at Hampton Court, and a visit to Burford Garden Centre. Our Mini Show entitled “Five Decades of Four Ends” was held in July, and a celebratory lunch was held in August. We are planning a “50th Anniversary Harvest Lunch” on 29th October. The Lunch is for PAGE 14
Flower Club Members and invited guests only. Afterwards at our 1.45pm starting time, the club is open to visitors. We have a talented and innovative demonstrator, Gill McGregor, with her demonstration: “Golden Years” followed by a “Photo Shoot” of members and flower arrangements. Early in December we plan a “Christmas Coffee Morning” , and in mid December, our AGM with a Christmas Demonstration, entitled “Let’s Celebrate”, followed by mince pies and sherry. Visitors are welcome (£5.00 entrance) We are a friendly club, and promise a relaxing afternoon watching the demonstrations, and tea and home made cake for only £1.00, and a chance to win one of the floral raffle prizes. Stokenchurch Medical Centre Did you fail to appear? – (DNA’s). The NHS loses millions of pounds each year through people who fail to appear for their appointments. Sometimes no-one is at fault, which includes emergency situations such as being involved in an accident or sudden illness. The other end of the spectrum is those people who don’t really care. After all they have a right to that service, they’ve paid their taxes etc., and it’s free. NHS dentists have become productive at attempting to prevent DNA’s by charging in advance of treatment, but this still hasn’t fully eradicated the problem. There are many people for whom a thirty or forty pound loss is insignificant, or have a raft of excuses as to why this penalty shouldn’t apply. At the Medical Centre we lose on average 6 hours per week of clinician time through missed appointments. This might not sound a lot but monthly that’s 24 hours or another doctor for half a day a week. Whilst charging a fee is contentious, in an attempt to reduce DNA’s at the surgery we are now writing to ‘repeat offenders’, because that missed appointment is an opportunity for someone else to be treated on the day. Looking at the problem more holistically we recognise that there is an issue with patients who work in a different area to where they live, and not being able to get to their GP appointment, and also some surgeries now unable to provide a routine appointment within six weeks, whereby someone simply
PAGE 18
forgets or recovers. (Most of our routine appointments are now two weeks or less). Recently the NHS has relaxed the rules around patients joining a Practice, which we see as a positive move. We are writing to local businesses offering ‘GP of choice’ to their employees, and so that they can be seen at this Practice during business working hours. We have also been allowed to take onto our Practice list patients from outside our Practice Area where a GP considers it a reasonable request. So for those people we are now the Practice of choice. This includes villages in Oxfordshire, and certain areas of High Wycombe and surround. As we continue to increase in size then we will also look to increase our staffing. Stokenchurch Medical Centre.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Oscar, I’m a 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier type. I am a sweet boy who loves being with people. I don’t mind dogs out & about but I don’t like to share my personal space so I am looking for a home with no other dogs. I would like some more training as I only really know how to sit, but I love treats so training should be fun. I cannot live with another dog but possibly with a cat and would like any children in my new home to be aged 7 years and over. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm. PAGE 22

Book Reviews A Good Read Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney Of course this month children all over the country said goodbye to the long summer holiday and trudged (many of them reluctantly) back to the classroom. So this month we have a ‘back to school’ theme with the first book in the smash hit US book series. Greg Heffley is finding his way through the minefield that is middle school. As he points out at the start of the book this isn’t really a diary. In his own words there is none of this ‘dear diary’ rubbish and he won’t be discussing his ‘feelings’. It’s a journal, and as a journal it takes us through the school year from the all-important decision of where to sit on the first day of class, to the embarrassment of playing a tree in the school production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ (and not even being able to throw apples at annoying Patty who is playing Dorothy!). Along with his best friend, Rowley, he plans a Hallowe’en haunted house to raise some money but unfortunately they only manage one terrified guest before Rowley’s dad brings it to an end. But as we find out, that was not quite the end of the matter and it takes a full school year before the consequences of Hallowe’en night are fully realised. Described as ‘a novel in cartoons’ this is a perfect book for both those who love reading and those who are ‘reluctant readers’. Yes, it’s an American book, but there are no issues with readers relating to the culture: school is school, wherever you are in the world!
Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon This engrossing novel is the first in the ‘Outlander’ series and introduces the reader to Claire Randall. It is 1945 and Claire is on a second honeymoon with her husband after being reunited with him following the end of the war. The Scottish Highlands seems idyllic although she accepts that the real reason for the destination is for her husband, Frank to research his family history. Claire visits a stone circle at Craigh na Dun and faints after hearing a strange buzzing noise. When she comes round she finds herself transported back in time to the 18th Century. Not knowing when or if she will ever return to 1945, Claire sets about surviving in an alien culture. She falls for Jamie Fraser, a young Scottish warrior, who is about as different from Frank as you can possibly imagine. She learns of his life and how it crossed paths with Captain Randall: the ancestor that her husband is researching back in 1945. Her heart and passions are divided between Frank in 1945 and the Scotsman she is forced to marry to save her life. Winner of the Romance Writers of America’s award of ‘Best Romance’ when it was first published, the story has recently been adapted for American television and is shown here on Amazon Prime. Gabaldon has created a rich world for her characters set against the romantic Scottish Highlands. The central characters of Claire and Jamie are complex and they carry the reader through the story. Even the many smaller characters have a voice of their own: from Dougal MacKenzie who leads Jamie’s clan to Geillis Duncan, an unexpected ally for Claire. At 880 pages this may seem like a daunting read, but before you know it, the pages have sped by. By Willow Coby

Tastes so good... Potato & Tomato Herb Galette
This simple recipe is a real crowd pleaser and makes a great lunch in its own right or a delicious side dish. Use fresh herbs if possible but you can substitute with dried if necessary. The galette may be made in a pie dish or individual steel food rings. Ideally floury potatoes should be used for this recipe as they have more starch which holds the galette together better. If you don’t have food rings this can be made in a pie dish in exactly the same way but will take longer to cook. Ingredients for 4 servings 2 large tomatoes 3 or 4 medium sized floury potatoes* Handful of fresh thyme and chives 60g butter Salt & pepper * King Edwards are a good choice Maris Piper work too although they’re not as floury. Equipment: Food processor with slicing disc or mandolin. Sharp knife. Food rings and a baking tray. Oven: Gas Mark 7, 220°c Method: Melt the butter in a pan. Using some of the butter grease the rings and
PAGE 40
the baking tray where the rings will sit. Place rings onto greased area. Wash and chop the herbs, dry on kitchen roll to stop them sticking together. Reserve a small amount for garnish. Thinly slice tomatoes with a sharp knife and leave on a cooling tray to allow excess liquid to drip. Thinly slice the potatoes using the food processor and use immediately. Layer 2 or 3 slices of potato in the rings. Using a pastry brush or the back of a teaspoon, paint the layered potato with the melted butter. Season lightly, sprinkle some herbs and top with tomato. Repeat until you have filled the rings, finishing with a potato layer which should be buttered to brown nicely. Pop in the oven for 30-40 minutes and remove when the crust is golden brown and the potato feels tender with a knife. Scatter with herbs to garnish and serve piping hot.

Famous People of the Chilterns: Roald Dahl
The famous writer Roald Dahl, creator of wonderful tales for children and adults, lived in Great Missenden for 30 years. His life was every bit as eventful as his stories. Born in Wales, to Norwegian parents, his father died when he was three and it was his mother who first fired his imagination, with tales of Norwegian trolls. At 18 he joined an expedition to Newfoundland, then went to work for Shell in Africa. When war broke out he signed up for the RAF, serving in Libya, Greece and Syria. He rose to the rank of Wing Commander in a career in which he crashed, was wounded and shot down. Dahl was then posted to British Intelligence in Washington where, it is said, his success as a ladies’ man outshone James Bond. Fittingly, Dahl wrote the script of the 1970 Bond movie You Only Live Twice and also scripted the film of Ian Fleming’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – for which the windmill scenes were filmed in the Chilterns at Turville, near Hambleden. Roald Dahl’s writing career began in earnest when he met C S Forester, of Captain Hornblower fame, who was to write up Dahl’s war experiences for Washington’s Saturday Evening Post. On receipt of Dahl’s notes about the war, Forester replied: “Did you know you were a writer? I haven’t changed a word.” Dahl began writing for children when he had a family of his own. In 1960 he settled at Gipsy House in Great Missenden. Sitting in his garden hut, in a battered armchair with a board across his knees, he wrote the Angling Spring Wood

stories that made him, at one time, the best-selling children’s author in the world. Roald Dahl Roald Dahl died Photo by: Carl of a rare blood van Vechten disease in 1990, age 74, and was buried in the cemetery of Great Missenden parish church. Some years later, the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre was established in Great Missenden’s village high street to inspire 6 – 12 year olds with a love of writing and to tell the story of Dahl’s life and work. There are self-guided trails from the Museum to see some of the features around Great Missenden which were included in Dahl’s stories. The library is the one frequented by Matilda while her mother played bingo in Aylesbury. Outside the village is Angling Spring Wood where Dahl took many walks and which was the inspiration for Fantastic Mr Fox. There is an audio Talking Trail for the Wood which can be downloaded from www.chiltern. gov.uk/anglingspringwoods This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £2.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. Plant of the Month Aster Looking a lot like a giant daisy, an aster springs forth with a starry shaped head providing colour in late summer and autumn when many of the other blooms may have already faded away. These plants can grow up to 8ft in height depending on the variety chosen so they’re a great choice for many gardens given their flexibility. Make sure that you don’t plant the annual varieties in the same place each year in order to prevent plant disease such as Aster wilt. PAGE 44

Wycombe Swan
The Smallest Show on Earth will be at Wycombe Swan from Monday 19th – Saturday 24th October 2015 The Smallest Show on Earth is a brand new musical comedy inspired by the hilarious 1950’s film starring Peter Sellers, spliced with classic songs by Irving Berlin (Blue Skies, Shakin’ the Blues Away, Steppin’ Out With My Baby), starring Liza Goddard (Bergerac) and Brian Capron (Coronation Street). Stunned to discover they have inherited the Bijou cinema, two innocent newly-weds have their hopes dashed when they discover it is a total flea-pit. To restore it to its former glory and stop the wrecking ball, they need to get the eccentric manageress, Mrs Fazackalee (Goddard) and Mr Quill (Capron), the unreliable projectionist, to help them with their ambitious plans. Music and Lyrics by Irving Berlin and by Special Arrangement with StudioCanal Directed by Thom Southerland

Lovell Fuels are approaching their 2nd year anniversary!
Although the business is young, the heritage goes back a long way – Simon’s grandparents and parents operated from the same premises back in 1972 as H. W. Lovell and Son. Simon was brought up in the family business, but after his father passed away in 1999, and his mum retired a couple of years later, the business was sold. In 2013, Simon decided to start up the family firm again with his wife Suzanne and the two began building the family business back up, with Suzanne manning the office while Simon did the deliveries.

“I didn’t feel ready to take the business on when my mum sold up but I stayed within the oil industry, and one of my ideas was to buy my own little tanker and I started doing pump outs for people and third party deliveries over winter months. Everyone I met spoke fondly of Lovells and how they missed the fast and personal service, and quality of care. “We are sticking to our philosophy of fair pricing, and doing what we say we’re going to do and not letting people down. When someone runs
out of oil and we can help them out, they are genuinely grateful and it’s very satisfying.” Lovell Fuels deliver within a 25 mile radius of Long Crendon, supplying homes, farms and businesses. For domestic heating oil, agricultural diesel, oil tanks or oil tank security, check out the website www.lovellfuels.co.uk or call 01844 202777.

Martin Lewis Childcare This is an important warning for anyone who pays for childcare. There are major changes due to take place to the system this year – and you need to decide rather soon how they affect you. If you leave it too late, you could miss out on thousands of pounds. Are you eligible for childcare tax credits? The most important start point is to check if you’re entitled to what’s technically called the ‘Childcare Element of Working Tax Credit’ – this is NOT the same as Child Tax Credit. You can usually claim it for children up to age 15, provided you pay for approved (Ofsted or equivalent) childcare. Sadly the eligibility criteria are very complex. So I’ve tried to distil it in a simple rule of thumb: ‘if you’re a single parent working 16+ hours a week, or a couple BOTH working 16+ hours a week, and your total household income is under £46,000, you should definitely check out if you’re entitled.’ Please read this carefully – I’m not saying you are entitled, just that it is worth checking, as this is big money. The average pay out is around £60/week. That’s over £3,000/year. If you’re not entitled to tax credits, decide now which other scheme works for you This is where everything is changing. If you’re eligible for tax credits, you’re likely to be better off getting that. If not, there are other schemes to look at. This autumn, the new ‘tax-free childcare’ scheme launches and the current childcare vouchers scheme that lets many pay for childcare from their pre-tax income will close for new applicants. So if you’re eligible for vouchers, but won’t be for the new scheme, get in quick. - New tax-free childcare scheme: If you’re a single parent who works, or a couple where BOTH work, and you each earn under £150,000, for every 80p you put in a new childcare account, the government will add 20p on top which can be used to pay for Ofsted approved (or equivalent) childcare for under-12s. The maximum the Government will contribute is £2,000 per child per year. Most childminders, after-school clubs are Ofsted approved, as are many nannies. - Current childcare voucher scheme. Here you usually trade in your pre-tax salary for vouchers. For example, a basic- rate taxpayer can swap £1,000 of salary, PAGE 56
which after tax and National Insurance is only £700ish in your pay packet, for £1,000 in childcare vouchers. So you’re up £300 per £1,000. The maximum you can get is £55/week per year per parent, which would be a gain of £930 for a basic-rate taxpayer. Any parent can do this, even if their partner doesn’t work, provided your employer offers it (many do, but many don’t). Yet if you’re not signed up to this by the time the new scheme starts, you can’t do it after. So if it’s right for you – sort it soon. - Tax-free childcare vs childcare vouchers. If you’re a couple where only one works, the vouchers win hands down, as you won’t be eligible for the new scheme. Plus, if your childcare costs are low, it’s likely vouchers win due to the tax and National Insurance savings. Yet for the self-employed, those whose firms don’t offer the vouchers, or those with more than one child and high childcare costs, the new scheme wins. This is just the tip of the iceberg – full analysis of which wins at mse.me/childcare. What about free childcare for three and four year-olds? The Government have announced plans to give working parents with three and four-year-olds 30 hours of free childcare per week. If made law, pilot schemes will start in Sep 2016, though there’s scepticism about whether it’s deliverable. Yet already for at least 38 weeks a year (each week of the school year), if you’ve a three or f our-year-old, you’re entitled to 15 hours a week of free childcare. Families with a low income may also get free early education for two- year-olds. Contact your local council to check if your child qualifies at (a good place to start is gov.uk/find-free-early-education). If they do, go to finder.familyandchildcaretrust.org for info on which childcare providers you can use under the scheme. You then liaise directly with the provider to get the free childcare. Is there help for paying for summer schools? If you’ve got older children and work, check whether there are any summer schools in your area that they can go to. Some schools, community centres and youth groups have their own schemes. Most are Ofsted (or equivalent) registered, so if you pay for them, you qualify for childcare tax credit or you can use childcare vouchers to pay for them. Rabbits are often thought of as easy, low maintenance pets but they actually have some very specific requirements for a happy, healthy life. Rabbit teeth are constantly growing so need to be worn down to stop serious dental disease occurring. Grass and hay encourages them to grind on their back teeth; a rabbit should graze constantly - in a 24 hour period they should eat their own body weight in hay! Chewing on fruit tree branches is another great way to keep teeth worn down.
Rabbits are very sociable animals and should never live alone. However they are fiercely territorial so if you have a solo bunny & would like to introduce a friend DO NOT attempt to do so without first consulting a professional. The RSPCA are a fantastic source of help and guidance - why not adopt a companion and the RSPCA will help with the bonding?
Obesity can be a big problem, predisposing them to arthritis and fly-strike. One of the leading causes of obesity in rabbits is overfeeding of pellets/muesli. One egg cup of pellets is plenty for your bunny each day - as a small treat. Other treats could include fresh fruit & vegetables – though not all are appropriate as some are too high in calcium and can lead to urinary stones - talk to your vet for advice.
CROSSROADS
Remember bunnies are very clever, inquisitive animals and need space to run around and explore. Whether they live inside or outside they need daily access to a safe enclosed garden, or large run, or indoor play area to keep them mentally stimulated.
