PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

3

Dear Members I thank members for attending the 103rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) that was held on Sunday, 29th April 2018 at the Activity Suite and I am pleased to welcome Mr Chia T-Jian to the Management Committee. I look forward to work closely with fellow colleagues in the new term in office. The 3rd CSC Super Junior Swimming Invitational 2018 will be held on 30th June and 1st July. During the 2-day meet, we ask for members’ understanding that limited car park lots will be available due to the anticipated number of participants from various local clubs and the region attending the swimming meet. We also apologise that the facilities of Sports Complex will be closed temporarily from 7.00am to 6.30pm on 30th June and 1st July (Please see the ensuing page for more information). This year CSC swimmers did exceedingly well at the 49th Singapore National Age Group (SNAG) Swimming Championships, winning a total of 105 medals, placing CSC first in the overall medal tally. Well done Swimmers! I would also like to extend heartfelt congratulations to Nur Marina Chan and Gan Ching Hwee for respectively meeting the 2018 Asian Games “A” and “B” qualifying mark. Ching Hwee has also successfully met the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific “A” and 2018 Youth Olympics Games “A” qualifying marks. Hard work and perseverance has paid off as she broke the National Under – 17 Record for Women, 1500m Freestyle and meet records for Women 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle. Outstanding performance, Ching Hwee. With effect 1st May 2018, the Club Jackpot Room will implement the self-exclusion scheme initiated by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG). Members will have to sign a consent form (available at the Jackpot room) before entry. This allows the Club to verify with NCPG if the member is subject to the self-exclusion scheme (Please see the ensuing page on the announcement). Members can check out the Sports and Lifestyle programmes that aim to promote quality bonding between parents and children during the May and the June school holidays. For F&B, there will be special and holiday buffets where members can plan to have with family and friends. On the 15th May 2018, there will be a Chinese fusion cuisine as this will be paired with an exquisite Spanish red wine. For Regional Networking, 4 new reciprocal and affiliated clubs have been added as part of our continuous effort to increase the privileges of having a CSC membership. On behalf of the Management Committee and the staff of CSC, I wish all Mummies and Daddies a Blessed Mother’s and Father’s Day, and an enjoyable Vesak holiday. Shalom and God Bless

Edwin Lee . President

CSC Swimmers Making

Big Waves

It’s no surprise that their names have made headlines nationwide. Swimmers Gan Ching Hwee and Nur Marina Chan Shi Min Alif Abullah did CSC proud at the 49th Singapore National Age Group (SNAG) Swimming Championships by meeting the qualifying marks for 2018’s Asian Games. Also known as Asiad, the Asian Games will be held in Indonesia from 18 August to 2 September 2018. This event assembles top athletes from across the region. To make the cut is a huge personal achievement and a testament to what consistent training and self-discipline can accomplish when brought to fruition. GAN CHING HWEE has been training with CSC’s A1 competitive swimming group since January 2015. She started swimming at the tender age of four but only began winning competitions when she was 12. Her coach, Eugene Chia, inspired her to keep working at the sport she loves. Despite being the youngest swimmer at her first major games (the 2017 SEA Games), Ching Hwee won the Bronze Medal in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley. At only 14, this promising athlete is already the fastest long distance swimmer in Singapore, and she shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. The recent SNAG only adds to her list of accolades; she met the 2018 Asian Games “B” qualifying marks in the Women’s 400m Freestyle, 800m Freestyle and 1500m Freestyle. In addition, she also met the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific “A” qualifying mark in the Women’s 1500m Freestyle, and the 2018 Youth Olympics Games “A” qualifying mark in the Women’s 800m Freestyle. Right: Gan Ching Hwee and Coach Eugene Chia

Since picking up the sport in Secondary 1, NUR MARINA CHAN SHI MIN ALIF ABULLAH, 21, has represented Singapore in the FINA World Cup, Southeast Asian Swimming Championships, SEA Games, Commonwealth Games and Summer Youth Olympic Games, among others. The recent years have been challenging for Marina, but an outstanding performance at SNAG 2018 marked the end of this obstacle. She was able to meet the 2018 Asian Games “A” qualifying mark in the Women’s 50m Freestyle. While delighted at the accomplishment, this ambitious youth has since set her sights on even loftier goals: qualifying for the 2020 Olympics.

Nur Marina Chan

CSC would like to congratulate Gan Ching Hwee and Nur Marina Chan for achieving the qualifying times for their respective major games, and wish them the best of luck in May’s final team selection.

Spring Festival

24 Feb

The programme commenced with an 8-piece drum show followed by Lion and Dragon dance performances on 24 February 2018. Kids were fascinated with the Lion Dance and the balloons being given out by the Dog Mascot. The Magic Umbrella performance, Unicorn Drink and Rainbow Cheese Toast booth were highly commended by members as well. Of special mention this year was the grand appearance of Alec Chia, one of Singapore’s most popular Gods of Fortune, who went around to spread prosperity to all members. The festival ended with a Lohei session outside Manzhu CafÊ for Management and Lifestyle Committee members. It was a happy occasion enjoyed by all, providing plenty of photo taking opportunities with the performance troupe, mascot, stilt walkers and God of Fortune.

BOWLING LEARN-TO-PLAY PROGRAMME The CSC Bowling Section was pleased to kick start the new Learn-To-Play Programme on 11 March 2018. There were seven junior members signed up for the trial lesson. Under the guidance of Coach Felix Lee, the kids were given an introduction to the bowling lanes, equipment and some basic etiquette to observe while enjoying the sport in a safe and fun way. The kids were then exposed to some fundamental skills such as finishing position and ball release. Lastly, the kids got to the most anticipated part of the lesson – holding the physical bowling ball and having a go at the alley. Parents were pleased to see their kids being so engaged throughout the lesson. Lessons are held every Sunday from 11.00am to 12.30pm at 12 Lanes bowling alley. The programme provides an excellent platform for beginners aged 6 to 12 years old to experience the thrill of knocking down pins while learning the foundations and developing coordination. Interested parents may email ZhengYi_Hor@chineseswimmingclub.org.sg for more information.

CONTRACT BRIDGE: PREMIER BRIDGE LEAGUE 2018 The inaugural Premier Bridge League will be held from March until July 2018. There are a total of five Clubs participating this year. Overall, the programme offered the young athletes opportunities to exchange tactics and techniques with one another. Parents were also glad to see their child improving in the sport day by day and they are looking forward to more of such programmes in the future. Laughter filled the room when everyone cheered on their teammates who put their chopsticks skills to the test for a gold coins picking game. On this joyous and giving occasion, all dancers got to pick a “sure-win” red packet for good luck. This year’s best-dressed male and female awards were presented to a pair of dance partners dressed in matching traditional red outfits.

3D JELLY FLORAL ART WORKSHOP It was a fun afternoon of floral art decoration on 31 March 2018 as members tried their hands at creating floral designs in jelly. Everyone was given a set of working tools, which they used to create petals and leaves of different shapes, sizes and colours.
