RACE PLANNING As we move in to the competition phase and preparation towards the SNAG Championships, Coach Michael describes some of the elements necessary to prepare for race day.
TRAINING AND TAPER
Competition performance or racing is the end result of everything we prepare and train for. Coaches at CSC set annual and then shorter training cycle blocks (typically around 12 weeks, like a school term). During this sort of cycle, swimmers will build up volume (distance) and improve fitness. They will then do a lot of high-quality work specifically targeting race performance. There will then be a short decrease in volume of training (Taper) and then they compete. Usually there is a short recovery (light) week and the cycle repeats itself. This sequence is a standard approach to competitive swimming and understood and practiced throughout the world. Since I have been in Singapore, the better clubs and higher standard of swimmers are comfortable in practicing this type of sequence. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that too many clubs and swimmers tend to follow a short-term approach of not training much ‘in season’ or during the early part of the training cycle and then rushing to get fit and increasing the volume of training closer to the competition. It is almost akin to cramming in revision at the last minute before an exam at school. Whilst this may work to a certain degree in relation to learning and mental exercises, it is a short cut in sporting physical performance that is a recipe for disaster.
• Equipment list – prepare your bag the night before and include ‘spares’ • Eating practices (preferably a healthy balance meal within 45 min of the end of a competition session) • Ensure that land preparation (stretching and mobilisation) are well understood and practiced. • Personal warm-up: know your strokes, pace and technique practices • Decide your race strategy with your coach • Know exactly what you are going to do to recover – swim down, rehydrate and refuel, rest etc. • Preparation is critical – include snacks and drinks bottles in swimmer’s bags
Beginning the New Year in 2020, I would expect swimmers to have done a lot of training during the school holidays (part of November and December) and begin the year in a fit and wellconditioned state. In this case, the coaches can begin to specialise and refine this conditioning during January and February and then begin a short reduction in training at some point during March. I cannot stress enough the importance of hard work during this period and a high level of attendance at training is critical. Any short cuts at this stage ultimately, will compromise competitive performance. As an example of this, Eddie Reese (Joseph Schooling’s coach at The University of Texas and one of the best coaches in the world) said at a recent ASCA (American Swimming Coaches Association) Conference:
All these things can be done and checked well in advance of the competition and whilst swimmers in each squad might have similar plans, everyone should have their own individual variations. I would encourage all swimmers to discuss these with their own coach and prepare a strategy. In this electronic age, these lists and plans can be saved onto notes and prepared on other forms of multi-media and then accessed by swimmers at any time from their smart phones.
In order for your taper to work, you have to do things correctly from the Beginning of the year. If you have done the hard work in the winter months, your spring taper almost can’t go wrong. In Singapore, winter means the months December to February. Attendance should be high and a swimmer’s attention to hard work with excellent technique and technical skills. If this is done well, coaches are then in a position to rest and recover a swimmer as they get close to a main competition (in our case the SNAG Junior or Senior Championships). There are also a number of specific skills and practices that are important and relevant to each swimmer competing in swimming races and will be discussed in the following section.
RACE DAY
When it comes to race day, it is critical that each swimmer has a plan. This plan includes the following: • Timelines for Heats and Finals
The principles I’ve just described reminds me of two valuable quotes from my past (probably originated in the military): • “Time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted.” • “Meticulous Planning Prevents Pretty Poor Performance.”
TAKE-AWAY THOUGHTS • Swimmers should currently be in ‘hard training’ conducting as many sessions as possible and working with maximum effort and focus. • Athletes should see this as the time to establish excellent conditioning and technique. • Once this excellent background has been established, coaches can refine techniques and allow adequate recovery and adaptation to optimise performance. • The benefits of reducing volume and Tapering before competition can only be achieved if hard work has been effective earlier in the training cycle. • Race day timelines and readiness for a swimmer’s race should be well planned and discussed. • Preparing to race includes: Eating and rest/sleep strategies should be understood and planned.
