MESSAGE FROM HOUSE & GROUNDS COMMITTEE
3
Dear Members, As part of the Club’s Vision 2030 objectives, the House & Grounds Committee works closely with various Standing Committees and the Club Management to transform the Club into a family-oriented environment. This is to encourage more families including young and old to come and enjoy the facilities in the Club. In this regard, a children playground, an alfresco dining area and a pastry kitchen were installed. We also collaborated with Cocoon Learning Centre to allow our young members to study, rest and train better while they are at the Club. The Committee also carried out surveys and arranged coffee-chats with members. From the feedback received, we noticed that there was a need for the Club to have a collaborative area as some members, who are either self-employed or “digital nomads”, use the Reading cum Study Room more frequently. Hence, there was a change in the use for this room to become a Collaborative Room. This allows members to have some nondisruptive discussions inside the room. As the usage of the TV Room was low, it was combined with the Reading Room and renamed as Reading & TV Room. This allows members to have a place for quiet reading or watching TV programmes based on different time slots. The air-conditioning system replacement project at the Sports Complex was completed in 2018. The new air-conditioning system is now more environmentally-friendly and cost efficient. The replacement of the air-conditioning system at the Arrival Pavilion and rectification of the exhaust system at Man Zhu Café are scheduled in 2019. In 2019, part of the Arrival Pavilion lobby will be transformed to a family-friendly coffee lounge and sitting area to allow members and their families to have an additional area to mingle and network with friends in the Club. In addition, co-working areas will be provided for those who want to stay engage and work at the Club. In a scarce space Club, we are constantly reviewing creative approach to use our sports facilities for other activities during off-peak period. We will be looking into the option of having multiuse sports facilities at the Club. The Committee also continues to give its fullest support to the Club Management to ensure that the upkeep of the Club facilities are managed cost effectively and efficiently, without compromising the quality and standard of Club facilities for members’ enjoyment. Going forward, the Committee will continue to stay focus to improve the Club’s facilities to keep it current and relevant to our members and their families.
Wu Chee Yiun Chairman of House & Grounds Committee

Tips to help you maximise your racing potential at the forthcoming National Age Group Championships
BULLETIN
CLUB NEWS AND UPDATES
By Ian Turner
For some of you, the forthcoming Nationals will be the biggest swim meet that you will have attended. Two sessions a day for up to six days is a long time for you stay focussed on racing. However, evidence suggests that you have to experience the size and intenseness of one National Age Group before you are really focussed to swim fast. Senior swimmers have to experience the enormity of one Olympic Games before doing better in the second. In other words, you have to become familiar with what is going on. Everyone will be nervous. This’s normal and is to be expected, but you have to be able to control the butterflies in your tummy. I have highlighted some tips below that will help you make the most of your ‘big’ meet and hopefully help you quickly adjust to the competition. One of the things you have to do is to remember the mistakes you made the last time you raced and learn from them! I would like to think that you can take home medals from the meet but if this is not possible then try and benefit from the experience so that you are better prepared to get on the medal rostrum next year. • Attending enough training sessions during the lead into the meet is perhaps the most important thing that a swimmer can do to influence the result. Entering the SNAG and only training 2/3 times a week prior to the competition is virtually a waste of time. • A proper warm up is necessary so that each swimmer is mentally and physically loosened up and be ready to compete. Get to the pool early – don’t leave things until the last minute! Check with your Coach exactly what they want you to do. • Always be positive. Never mix with negative swimmers as they will drag you down. If you start having negative thoughts like bad races, then ‘change’ the channel. This simply means try and adjust your thinking to something that is positive – have some good races memorised to replace the bad ones. Don’t let your negative thoughts bring you down.
• Stay hydrated at all times. The pool will be hot throughout the whole competition and this will make you sweat. Bottled water is good, Cola is not! Remember to keep taking small sips of water whilst you are waiting for your race. Don’t drink milk. • Do not race on an empty stomach. Make sure you have breakfast every day before leaving home. Make sure that you also have something to eat in your bag after your race. Eat within 15 minutes of finishing the race. This will help you recover for the final. • Don’t miss out on swimming in the final. Make sure you win all the close finishes. 11th place is perhaps the worst position to finish as you will be 1st reserve for the final. • Always swim down so that you help yourself recover for the next session.
• You cannot perform well at a swim meet if you are messing about prior to your race. • Make sure that the team manager knows where you are at all times. • Always know which CSC team shirt you should be wearing.
• Make sure that you get to bed early on the days leading into the meet. • Try and visualise your race whilst you are sat waiting. Just like watching a film, you see your perfect race. Try and see yourself winning. Break the race down into little parts and mentally rehearse all the parts. There is no harm in dreaming how to win; in fact it will give you great confidence.
Good luck! And remember ‘If you can’t win then get a personal best (PB). If you can’t get a PB, ask yourself why?

BE A CSC JUNIOR TENNIS PLAYER TODAY! Game to take your tennis skill and experience to the next level? Be part of the CSC Junior Tennis team and seize the opportunity to represent the Club in competitions now! Sonia Rae Loke Jia En (11 years old) Sonia picked up her first tennis racquet at the age of 4. When she was 7, she signed up for a tennis holiday programme organised by CSC in June 2015 and this sparked off her love for tennis. From there, her supportive parents after much searching, enrolled her into STA’s Rising Stars programme. To prep for competitions, Sonia, in the lead up to the tournaments, would train more intensively by organising more hitting sessions with her coaches and training mates. She also makes sure that she gets enough rest and nutritious food before the day of the tournament. Being a member of the Club’s Tennis Section, Sonia had participated and won in the Women’s Doubles in the last quarter of 2018. She had also had the opportunity to play against the Korean Team in the Doubles event during their last visit in December 2018. We are pleased to share some of her past achievements- Finalist of the 2018 10U Girls STA 1st Junior Age Group National Tournament held in Kallang - Winner of the 10U Girls (Singles) Mandiri Tournament in Indonesia - Winner of the 10U Girls (Doubles) Tennis Malaysia Tournment in Johor - Winner of the 12U Girls (Doubles) Tennis Malaysia Tournment in Sabah
Sonia Rae Loke Jia En
By representing CSC in competition, Sonia is happy to learn and strives to keep herself competitive amongst the adults. She aims to further strengthen her physique, psyche and spirit, so she can bring her game up another level.
Kyra Yip (14 years old) & Matthew Yip (11 years old) The Yip siblings, Kyra and Matthew, have loved playing tennis since young. Kyra loves the sport as it is not only a game of physical endurance but also one that requires good strategizing. Tennis has allowed Kyra to cultivate values such as hard work, determination, teamwork and gratitude. These values have helped to mould and shape her into who she is today. Matthew enjoys tennis as a competitive sport and loves the mental challenges of having to react quickly and to constantly develop effective game plans to counter the opponent. Through tennis, Matthew also enjoys camaraderie with fellow team mates (and making new friends!) when they participate in league games. Both Kyra and Matthew have enjoyed the training sessions with the CSC Tennis Section Team.
Kyra Yip
To ensure that they are always at their best prior to a competition, the Yips’ preparation include a warm up session with drills and light match play, as well as arming themselves with a positive mindset – to believe, no matter the odds!
Kyra and Matthew have participated in tournaments organized by Singapore Tennis Association (STA) and league matches organised by Smash and JTTL. Kyra has represented her school where they emerged 2nd place (2018, C Division) and 3rd place (2019, B Division) in the Annual National School Games. She was a Semi Finalist for the STA Intermediate (Doubles) last year. Similar to his sister, Matthew is a school team member who represented his school in the National School Games where they clinched 2nd place for the Junior division in 2018 (with the 2019 games still ongoing). Matthew has also won team trophies from the Smash/JTTL league matches ranging from Champion, Runner-Up to 3rd/4th Positions for U10, U12 and U14 categories. These experiences have afforded them great opportunities for match play. In 2019, Kyra and Matthew will be representing CSC in the upcoming STA Inter-Club Singles League. We wish them all the best in their performance!
