PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Members, The Open House & Aquatic Festival held on 21 September 2019 was a resounding success. Close to 1,000 members and their guests participated in the water tele-matches, carnival games, bowling lessons, craft workshops, wine sampling and food tasting. Many were thrilled to meet Singapore’s first mermaid and to be treated to a splendid artistic swimming performance. All this was then followed by the official launch of Swim CSC logo by John Chew, our Club Captain. Members and their families continued into the evening with the Cinema Alfresco by the pool. A “big big” thank you to all members and our friends for your wonderful support! At the 14th Chinese Swimming Club Age Group Badminton (Invitational) Tournament 2019 held during the September School Holidays, the Club hosted nearly 700 Badminton players from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. For the tournament’s Under 13 champions, it was an inspirational experience to play in an exhibition match with top National Shuttlers, Loh Kean Yew, Loh Kean Hean, Yeo Jia Min and Andy Kwek. Thirty four swimmers represented CSC in the 24th SSC Open Invitational Midget Meet 2019 held on 7 & 8 September 2019. CSC came in 1st runner up after the host club, Singapore Swimming Club. Two of our swimmers, Nigel Low and Jayven Teo won the 7 and 8 year-old Most Valuable Swimmer awards respectively. Well done swimmers. At the U Bowling Battle of the Youth held at Orchid Bowl SAFRA Yishun on 8 September 2019, our bowler, Elliot Tan achieved a perfect game with 300 pin falls. He was crowned the Singles Champion with 937 total pin falls from 4 games and with fellow CSC Bowler Jonah Goh; they were the Doubles Champion. What a stellar performance. Congratulations! With Christmas just round the corner, join us for the Christmas Light-up on 29 November 2019 and don’t miss carolling with Santa amidst the Club’s colourful Christmas decoration. If members are looking for an idyllic setting to bring in Christmas and the New Year, join us for the countdown at 3 Bars on Eve of Christmas and New Year. Furthermore, Man Zhu Café has crafted a delightful Christmas Eve buffet dinner and a fabulous brunch for the festive season. More details will be released closer to the event date. As we celebrate the coming of the Christchild, I wish on behalf of the Management Committee and the administrative staff, all members and their families a Joyous Christmas and a Blessed New Year. Shalom and God Bless.

REGISTERING OF GUESTS & ABIDING BY CLUB’S BYE-LAWS AT THREE BARS Dear Sir,

To the General Manager,

I would like to comment on the excellent service of the Man Zhu Café staff. Stanley gave us a very good table with a lot of privacy and cleared the dirty table straightaway. Kenny served us happily and knew what we wanted. He is very prompt in his service and is knowledgeable in his job.

I have been a regular gym member of CSC. I visit the gym very early and notice that the 2 Chinese gym instructors (Mr Shawn and Mr Oh) deserve some recognition for their hardworking attitude and are diligent and friendly. I can see that as soon as they have opened the gym, they will work continuously without disappearing from the scene. Especially in the morning, there are more elderly using the gym.

Mdm Soh Suan Im 009491-10 Dear Sir, Agnes deserves commendation for her attentiveness to members‛ needs and always wearing a smile. She is friendly and works hard. Cheers Agnes! Mdm Jane Lim 60189800

I also notice that the work counters are packed and cleaned up. They will respond to our needs immediately. Hope the Club will continue to notice good workers and treat them well. Mdm Aw Siew Mui 003301-10

Members are required to register their guests and be responsible for their conduct and behavior. Members’ shall accompany their guests at all times.

On 21 September 2019, the Club extended its warm hospitality to approximately 1,000 members and public at the CSC Open House & Aquatic Festival. The Club took this opportunity to showcase our swimming training programmes from Learn to Swim, Pre-Competitive to Competitive Training and our Head Coach & Director of Swimming, Dr Michael Peyrebrune shared the training structure and approach with everyone present. A total of 13 food and retail stalls were setup including a food truck, which created more vibrancy to the event. Complimentary gourmet coffee was served by Lavazza while wine and whisky tasting was available throughout the event for participants’ enjoyment. A series of fun-filled activities were lined up for the young children as they were seen battling out at the water telematch, riding on the paddle boats and playing in the Fun Pool filled with inflatable sea creatures floats. The children also had a great time at the Ocean Park bouncy castle and received balloons in the shape of mermaids, dolphins and seals. Participants enjoyed the craft workshops where they made mini aquarium bottle and seashell necklace as well as carnival games organised by the Sports & Lifestyle department. The volunteers from the Lifestyle group also provided face and hand painting services where children and adults had aquatic-themed creatures painted. Complimentary bowling lessons were conducted by certified coaches from the Bowling Section while golf putting session was offered by the Golf Section to engage and interact with the attendees. Many were enthralled by the live appearance of Syrena, Singapore’s first real-life mermaid and her friends and seized the rare and up-close photo opportunity with them. The highlight of the day was the inauguration of the new CSC swim logo launched by Club Captain, Mr John Chew after the performances by the Artistic Swimming Team from Singapore Swimming Association and the 3 enchanting mermaids. The night ended with the 5th Cinema Alfresco, screening “Moana”, an action-packed voyage musical movie. There was a positive turnout of around 230 members and friends at the movie screening. We will like to express our gratitude to all our generous sponsors for making this event a success: AC Contract Services Pte Ltd, Ajinomoto (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Outshinerz Events Pte Ltd (Aqua+Series), Atos Wellness Pte Ltd, Cocotinos Hotels & Resorts, Far East Hospitality Management (Village Hotel Katong & Village Hotel Changi), Firefly Photography Pte Ltd, Passion Group of Restaurants (Fu Lin Men Cantonese Dining), Greenspade Global Pte Ltd, International Golf Institute, Ironman Cocowater, Kawai Music School, Lavazza, Hertz2 Pte Ltd, Mermaid Me, The DanceSports Academy, The Humble Scoop and HMM Global Pte Ltd (Turbo Swim Asia).

At the Mid-Autumn Celebration on 6 September 2019, around 250 members were engaged with activities such as Wushu performance, mooncake tasting, craft workshops, Wagashi making workshop and shopping at the mini marketplace. The mini marketplace housed brands like Parchmen & Co., Blyss Tea, Zestyleaf and Chang Ho Sek where participants tried their tea and mooncake specialities. The Wushu performers from Wan Wu Sports & Martial Arts Academy had successfully captivated the attention of the crowd with their powerful moves and stunts. The ever-popular craft workshops, DIY Nebula Bottle and DIY lanterns created excellent family bonding sessions. The participants of the Wagashi workshop also had an enjoyable session under the stars as they learnt the kneading and sculpturing of the traditional Japanese sweet into the shapes of leaf and rabbit. We were glad to see happy faces of families playing with the LED lanterns, posing with mascots, Chang’e and Hou Yi and receiving rabbit sweets that night. We look forward to more members joining us next year!

Paired with specially crafted menu to tantalize their taste buds, members learnt the finer details of Torres wines from the guest sommelier.Sign up with us for the next Wine Dinner in November!

PREPARING TO COMPETE Competition preparation and foreign travel have many benefits for developing positive Psychological characteristics. Head Coach Dr. Mike Peyrebrune focuses on the mental aspects of competing and why it is important to put swimmers in difficult environments as well as swimming locally. These messages are written with Swimming in mind, but are relevant to all sports offered at CSC. Dr. Michael Peyrebrune

“Being comfortable with uncomfortable”, “If there is a problem, just deal with it”, “Control the controllable”, “Support others in the Team before yourself”. These were all mantras that we abided by in the British Team in the build-up to the Olympic Games in Rio, 2016. These values were simple and helped us to achieve outstanding results (1 Gold and 5 Silver medals in addition to 7 fourth places) in very difficult circumstances. The Olympic Games is a very difficult environment in which to succeed. Not only were we 6,000 miles away from the UK and travelling across five hours of time difference, but the culture, heat and humidity, food and language were all different. When we arrived, at the Games Village, many apartments were not finished, the sanitary facilities were poor and the accommodation was noisy and uncomfortable. Had we not prepared for these circumstances, these issues would have been distracting, affected mood and ultimately compromised the swimmer’s performances. In Singapore, we are extremely fortunate that our facilities and environment are among the best in the world - clean, tidy, safe and highly developed. On the downside, most of the locations where our swimmers have to compete in within Asia are of a poorer standard and therefore provide challenges to our athletes. Recently our swimmers have competed in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Semarang, Indonesia, Jinan, China - many difficult environments that impose challenges to performing at our best. Towards the end of the year, we will be sending Teams to the Royal Bangkok Swimming Club Invitational and the Queensland State Championships. These trips provide swimmers with the opportunity to test themselves under tough and unfamiliar conditions. The objective is to attempt to compete at optimal levels despite the obstacles put in their way. After all, if they eventually represent Singapore in SEA Age Championships, ASEAN School Games, SEA Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth or ultimately the Olympic Games, they will have to cross these hurdles and deal with them better than their rivals to succeed. What are the Psychological processes and underlying characteristics needed to address these issues? In previous articles, I’ve talked about the multiplicity of factors required to master our sport of Swimming. We often focus on training technique, fitness, speed and power; how often do we attempt to train the mind/Psychology? A number of mental characteristics are critical to success in all sports. These include motivation, goal setting, mental toughness, resilience, handling stress, coping under pressure, positivity and determination. Clearly many of these factors are important day in day out, but it is in the competitive environment that these skills can be developed and tested. Competition with rivals creates focus, concentration, stress and pressure. The environment, travel conditions and performing under adverse conditions all test mental toughness, resilience and determination. It is the swimmers who cope with the pressures and distractions the best that tend to prevail and consistently perform at the highest levels. Only by competing regularly and in challenging environments can we train and develop these characteristics. Difficult conditions have to be overcome by all athletes, but it tends to be the ones who cope better that win. Indeed, many use it as a positive opportunity to gain an advantage through disadvantage.

Take-away thoughts •Embrace competition and race regularly to practice processes (start, turn, pacing etc.) under pressure. •Take opportunities to compete ‘out of your comfort zone’, i.e. different environments, competitive standards, a variety of events etc. •Build up mental toughness and resilience by always taking the difficult option. •Stay calm to perform under pressure is good advice for swimmers. •Take advantage of any foreign trips offered by CSC or SSA.

SWIM CSC SEPTEMBER IN- HOUSE SWIM CAMP 2019 This annual event appears to be getting more and more popular. 24 swimmers took part in the camp at CSC from the 11 to 13 of September, and engaged in a range of classroom activities, bowling, filming and interaction with coaches and friends from the club. The classroom sessions involved viewing and analysing technique clips from some of the world’s best swimmers. Film showed overwater and underwater strokes, starts and turns. Swimmers also participated in group sessions and land exercises specifically aimed at improving aspects of stroke technique. The educational value and camp experiences were definitely invaluable. Tommy Low, our swimming parent and avid photographer, was on hand to record the event and was able to put together a short video for the swimmers which was distributed to parents, coaches, and staff too.

SHORT COURSE FUN CHALLENGE 3 The meet was held at the Water Polo Pool on Saturday, 27 September 2019. A total of 146 swimmers participated in this meet. SWIM CSC STAFF RETREAT 12 staff travelled to Phuket, Thailand for the inaugural swimming department retreat on 22 to 24 September 2019. The event was hailed a great success with a nice balance of educational sessions, team building activities and ‘free and easy’ time. Educational sessions were lead by Head Coach Mike on planning and technique basics, while Coach Ian lead an excellent session on delivering drills and skills to Age Group Swimmers. An external management training company took the group through a number of practical team building exercises which identified issues such as communication, working together, trust and cooperation. Staff felt it was extremely beneficial and relevant to improve the delivery of the swimming programmes back at CSC.

URBAN GARDENING

It’s been a “fruitful” month, as the effort of our gardening interest group finally paid off with their first crop harvest! It was hard to imagine that a barren land just five months ago had bloomed into our Club’s very own nursery garden. Our avid gardeners were also given a tour of the Hort Park by NParks on 7 September 2019 and learnt useful gardening tips and ideas for our Club's nursery! Join our gardening enthusiasts on every Monday, 9.30am at our nursery located outside of Arrival Pavilion! To find out more, email to JickSern_ Lam@chineseswimmingclub.org.sg.
