1855

1940-1960

In Sultanate period, Hajj Jabar Madjati and his followers salling accross traits of Malacca is attracted to the beautiful coast of Java and has beautiful trees.

1887- 1890

The earliest group of dialect in the area is “Teochew” and “Hakka”, Teochew and Hakka people population had increased due to the resources of planting and fishing business. The Teochew developed fishing industry in the area.

1860

In coastal area, Chinese Hokkien people became fishermen and traders and living in Parit Jawa coastal area. They sell fish to farmers and miners. They also make 'dried fish' and sell it to Malacca and Singapore.

1877

The temple of Chwee Bee Keng has built, dedicated to QingShuiZhu, whose was believed to be the godness of the temple to protect the village.

1890

To develop the transpotation system in Muar district and Mainland, Sultan of Johor established the Muar state Railway, Javanese have involved in the construction. The operation of railway had helped with the develop of transportation and business in Parit Jawa.

Muar been attacked by Japanese armies due to the sentimentation of activist and communist for anti-japanese war, The villagers in Parit Jawa became two collective group to defend for safety and security of people in Parit Jawa which redueced the loss of financials and assets, however the peoples have go through hardship in that period.

1960 onwards

Present

Parit Jawa is now populated by its fishing industry, fishing village are named and owned by the Teochew, are believed to protected by the Chwee Bee Temple from the deity. The fishing village soon became a attracted spot for visitors to come by for fresh seafood, Asam Laksa and the landmarks.

The government tender modification of water course and flood gate to avoid floor from flood tide and rasing of water level during raning season, which affect the settlements and arrangement of the village. The modification brought development for the estuary in Parit Jawa.


ON-SITE ACTIVITIES

Grocery stores are places where locals will purchase their daily need products, hardware gears and food stuff.

Bird Watching Tower provides locals and tourist a spot for bird watching as well as scenary enjoyment. The temple is a gathering place for the locals whenever they seek religious advice, conduct prayers, marriage purposes and festival celebrations

Asam Pedas being a local famous delicacy, the food court allocates the locals and visitors with a variety of food, snacks and drinks to choose from. It is a gathering place from day to night for both locals and visitors.stuff.

BIRD WATCHING TOWER

As Pantai Leka is bird sanctuary for some local birds and migratory species, the birdwatching tower has been built as a convinience for fisherman to navigate their boat and fish net location, and also to faciliate the bird watching activities.

FISHERIES SOCIETY

The Fisheries Society established in October, 1968, the earliest fisheries society established in Johor. The society itself had organized many fund rising to help for the development of chinese temple and charities. The place function as bunding the relationship of the villagers.

CHWEE BEE KENG TEMPLE

The temple stand has a very important role in the fishing villagers, as they believe that the god of Qingshuizu had protected hinese people in the village during Chinese Exclusion act in 1945. The land in this fishing village is owned by the temple, which shown the position of power in this village.

MAZU TEMPLE

Mazu temple is founded by the fishermans before, was believed that people founded Mazu from the surface of sea, which believed Mazu come to protect the people. 1895, Teochew people slowly moving in to the village hence developed a temple for Mazu and let people come and pray.

ASAM PEDAS PARIT JAWA Asam Pedas in Parit Jawa especially in Pantai Leka is every famous to people, that is due to the freshness of the food they served, the asam pedas ikan are all made by the fresh fish that just catched from the sea. It also become an attraction for tourist who come by visit the fishing village.


SENSORY The significant experience of both water front site and foodcourt site is having contrast interm of the location of the site. The foodcourt site is facing nearby the junction of the road, hence traffic condition will be heavility affect the living condition of the area. The waterfront site is more peaceful compare to foodcourt site, the water flow of the sea and wind breezing provide a sense of peace to users and vegetation located at the site helps to calm the environment and users, hence users will have a meaningful experience towards the site.

The floodgate located nearby the foodcourt site is built by steel and concrete, the materiality of steel given a sense of contemporary to the contrast of traditional fishing village.

Village consist of lower population density compared to town areas due to town area having better development. higher job opportunity and higher living standards. This causes the younger generation moves towards town/city area for a living, leaving mostly of the elderly staying back at the village, thus causing the village to be less populated.

The locals carries out their daily activities mainly during the day, therefore area of activities and gathering places are more scattered and higher in density.

The comparison of demographic between fishing village and town area, to shows the contrast of development of buidling and economy in the same place. Demographic of Pantai Leka shows that mostly elderly are choose to stay in the village, compare to the age distribution of town area. Also, from the boundary organization, the town area are larger than the villages, it indicate that the development of cities is rapidly growing, hence population of town area are also increasingly adding, The fishing village are needed to be preserved in order to save the historical value in Muar, and save the natural environment from the sea.

Majority of the businesses that can be found at the village are small business, such as grocery shops, markets, hardware shops, restaurants, food stalls and fishing. The diversity of job opportunities are limited, results in lower opportunity and lower income. Therefore, young generations tend to move towards town for more job opportunity and higher income.

Prevailing wind from Northeast and Southwest occurs due to the monsoon seasons. The winds provides cooling effect for the village, as well as bringing in rainfall. Wind direction prevails from Northeast direction due to current monsoon season occuring from October to March. Another monsoon season from May to September blows Southwest wind.

The temperature at site is relatively consistant, ranging from 25°C to 32°C. Rainfall intensity are higher during April and October due to prevailing wind bringing in rain clouds.

PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION Access

Thi significant views from Pantai Leka brings photography enthusiast and visitors to come to the waterfront site, also the restaurants are getting crowded during dinner hour, which support the reason of traffic on weekend will slightly heavy.

Vehicular access that lead towards the main road to town area at the junction, and cars will access to the village due to evening hour (dinner at asam pedas), which causes heavy traffic to the area.

There are no proper pedestrian walkway, locals tends to walk by the side of the roads to access other places. Pedestrians are able to access to and from the village via the primary road; access around the village via the secondary road that circulates within the village.

The traffic pattern of circulation shows that the road leads to town area, due to working hour, peoples drives to home from work, which indicate the main road is highly used from the people from town area.

The traffic condition from the routes indicates there are no main roads leads to the fishing village, the boundary between the main roads and the fishing village from traffic condition have shown that the people living in the area mainly will only travel though the town area.

VEHICULAR CIRCULATION

Primary road is more open to public where people can catch the view of the road from far, usually is used by the people come from the primary road. While the secondary road is lead users who want to go to the playground and birdwatching tower.

People come from the other side of the village or from other village will walk by this road to come to the site, while secondary pedestrian road will used for a convinience to cross by the road from the small street in between the building.


HARDSCAPE The main hardscape feature located in Pantai Leka is the flood gate. The hardscape serves as a transportation convinience, and security funstion towards the site. The floodgate helps to reduce the flooding amount happened from the site, and it acts as a linkage between the malay and chinese village. Buildings are commonly low in height (2-storeys) due to underdevelopment. Building materials are similar, such as concrete, bricks, timber and metal, due to being constructed during pre-modern and modern times. Stree lights focuses mainly around village area, lighting up residential areas and places for night activities.

SERIAL VISION ESSENCE OF PARIT JAWA FISHING VILLAGE An idea came out to inteprete the essence of fishing village, insipired by how a one way road can explain whole historical and human culture of the site. The path that link from the cross road, and the narrow and hidden street from the site, where fisherman will built their own Kelong and doing fishing business from the street. The street is hidden where leads to the significant temple, the views from narrow street to open space is extraordinary different with walking to the main street. The sense of quiet and serene, warm emotion overwhelmed the street experience.


FOODCOURT SITE TO WATER FRONT SITE ROUTE To walk from the front entrance of foodcourt site to waterfront jetty, to embrace the road to the past history, one glace the scene of the village and the fishing boat, from the line of one street.
